CAHILL-KEYES vs MERCATOR
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cahill-Keyes Polyhedral Compromise
Created in 1975 by Gene Keyes as a modification of Cahill's original 1909 butterfly projection, the Cahill-Keyes was laid out in a way more reminiscent of a standard north-up world map than the butterfly in order to improve its general purpose usability, while keeping the very low distortion of the octahedron-based design. Antarctica is also shown combined into a contiguous region in the centre to show its shape better.
Mercator Cylindrical Conformal
Probably the most infamous projection in this tournament, the Mercator projection, created by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, gets a bad rap for its use as a general-purpose world map in atlases and classrooms due to its massive size distortion closer to the poles, however it actually has a specific use case.
Mercator originally billed his map as "A new and augmented description of Earth corrected for the use of sailors", it was very useful for navigation due to the property that loxodromes, lines of constant bearing on a compass, are represented as straight lines on the map. While they aren't the shortest path between two points, it did ensure you could check the angle of a line on a map against your compass heading to make sure got where you wanted to go.
It is one of the projections featured in xkcd 977.

DAY 5: MAP - This is the Dahlia “Mercator”. The Mercator projection is a geographical chart where a spherical globe is flattened into a two dimensional map, presented by geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. The dahlia is a large cactus dahlia with red stripes radiating out of the centre, resembling its namesake.
I should mention that this is the flower that made me realise that I could link plants to each prompt. Thank you to @farmergracy for the inspiration!

I was on a bus, when we (unfortunately) went through Bovec; A town of about 1500 in north-western Slovenia. And I was inspired to make this because it's so funny to me that there's just nothing but a flat valley with a random really tall mountain far away.

The “letting exhibits interact with people at night so they can teach them about history” is all fun and games until Ahkmenrah gets hit with both “Egypt isn’t in Africa” and “Aliens built the pyramids” in one night
