The article from The Armory Life by Friedrich Seiltgen explores the Vought V-173 Flying Pancake, an innovative American disc-shaped aircraft developed during World War II. Conceived in the 1930s by Charles Zimmerman, the V-173's unique design featured two large counter-rotating propellers and a disc-shaped wing, aiming to eliminate drag and improve flight performance. Despite its unconventional design and potential, the aircraft faced issues like heavy controls, severe vibrations, and difficult landings. While Zimmerman and Vought Aircraft continued to develop the concept into the XF5U Flapjack—a more advanced version intending to serve as a carrier-based fighter—the project was ultimately canceled due to the rise of turbojet engines and changing military priorities post-WWII. The V-173, though never fully realized as a successful military aircraft, remains an important part of aviation history, now restored and displayed at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas, Texas.

We took a very short walk at the Patuxent Research Refuge – South Tract. The trails were closed for hunting. The majority of the trees were bare and perfect for photos. Lake Reddington was frozen which made a nice backdrop for the lonely limb sitting on the ice.
