I like this little moment between TK and Owen in Flashback Fic and wanted to share.
By 8 p.m., TK is alone in his bedroom with only the desk lamp shining. He’s over on his bed, back turned on a half-hearted effort at homework. American History. Colonies schmolonies. Blah blah snooze.
He leans with folded arms against his windowsill, chin nested in the crook of his left elbow while he watches the snow clatter and puff against the glass. It’s coming down thick. Busy days and nights await Owen. He'll be cutting open cars to extract people freezing to death inside, and coordinating ice rescues, and inevitably putting out fires started by electric heaters. TK wishes he could be with his dad on those missions – in the teeth of it, doing something practical and useful. He’s no good in school but for that weird string of As in Biology - which is mainly down to Mr. Patel for being great at his job. It’s a drain on society that he has not dropped out. Yet, he can’t bear to suggest it to his parents, who are having an amicable conversation at the kitchen table right now. They can agree on their love for him, and their disappointment in him.
The muffled sound of their voices stops abruptly. He hears footsteps tread the floorboards, heading towards his door.
A single knock. Owen opens up without being invited. “Hey – I’ve got to head off now. I need to be at the firehouse bright and early. You're sitting in the dark?”
“You don’t want to stay on the pull-out?” TK sniffs. They’ve made the spare bed up for him a few times before. “It’s a mess out there, Dad.”
“I don’t want to be caught here tomorrow. It’ll take me too long to get across town.”
TK glances at his wet window, at the snow splattering on impact. “It’s the longest night,” he says, and it does seem unusually dark beyond the white drift.
Owen wanders over to squeeze TK’s shoulders through his purple American Apparel hoodie. “You feel cold. You need to eat – there’s a plate for you in the oven. It’s still warm.”
"I'm just not hungry."
"TK."
"I'll barf."
"You won't."
"I feel nauseous.”
“Because you haven’t eaten. Come on.” Owen tugs lightly at the white drawstring of TK’s hood and then harder at the hood itself. “I’m not going to stop doing this until you come into the kitchen.”
TK tries to brush Owen’s hand away, but Owen only strengthens. “Fine,” TK grunts. He’s in enough trouble as it is.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a sudden rise in demand from rural and urban infrastructural developments across the world and mostly in undeveloped countries. Initiatives such as the Smart City project by India will see a long-term demand for cement products which will see huge technological upgradation of existing cement plants for cost and energy optimization.
The cement industry is one of the most intensive energy consumers in the industrial sectors. Energy consumption represents 40% to 60% of production costs. Additionally, the cement industry contributes around 5% to 8% of all man-made CO2 emissions. Due to increasing demand efficiency and optimization will be the key criteria for today’s cement plant operators which will largely depend on the accurate and repeatable measurement of various process parameters such as Temperature, Pressure, Flow Rate & Level, etc.
In the cement industry generally pressures, temperatures are used for calculating process gas flows in correlation with Fan/Blowers’s speed & power consumption, however, this is an assumption that generates high uncertainties against the actual gas flow rate and energy consumption of prime mover such as Fan/Blowers.
There is an urgent need for optimum control of Air and process gas flow measurement for improving the overall quality of cement, efficiency, and cost optimization for many process requirements as below:
1. PREHEATER PROCESS EXHAUST GAS FLOW RATE MEASUREMENT
Cyclone Preheaters are used before rotary kilns of cement production plants to heat the raw mix and drive off carbon dioxide and water before it is fed into the kiln. The quality of the preheater in a cement plant directly affects the stability of calcining temperature and cement clinker quality in the kiln. Measuring the exhaust gas flow rate in the down comer can help in fine control of the ID Fan downstream for optimum control of the O2 content of the kiln off gas.
Exhaust gas flow measurement generally is challenging due to the large diameter of the duct, high dust concentration, and high temperatures around 350⁰C-400⁰C. Generally, velocity is measured temporarily by Pitot tube with high uncertainties for cross-checking which doesn’t help in the efficient control of the process.
2. CLINKER COOLER AIR FAN FLOW RATE MEASUREMENT
The clinker cooler is a key device in the clinker production line which helps in quenching and transports the hot clinkers discharged from the rotary kiln and supplies hot air for the rotary kiln and preheater system. As the first equipment where high-temperature clinker releases heat, it plays an indispensable role in reducing coal and power consumption, increasing secondary and tertiary air temperature, and improving heat recovery rate.
A good clinker cooler can help cement plants reduce energy consumption from two aspects: one is to improve the cooling efficiency and reduce the power consumption of the clinker cooler itself; the other is to reduce the coal consumption of rotary kiln and preheating systems by improving the heat recovery rate. Clinker cooler grate air fan efficient control is vital in achieving cooling efficiency and energy saving with a higher cooling rate concerning feed rate adjustment. Continuous cooling air flow rate measurement plays an important role in optimizing the operation of a clinker cooler.
Measurement of a cooler air fan is a challenging task due to the high concentration of clinker dust with a high abrasion rate where flow sensors need to be robust and immune to high abrasion resistance. Currently, this application has a limited flow solution and less life expectancy about 1-6 months.
3. AQC BOILER & PHP PROCESS GAS OUTLET FLOW MEASUREMENT
Modern cement plants are equipped with Waste heat recovery (WHR) power plants installed in cement plants, using the heat generated through rotary kiln preheater (PH) and AQC exhaust hot gases for power generation. Waste heat recovery systems (WHRS) wherein hot waste gas heat from rotary kiln preheater & clinker cooler is fed to Preheater (PH) Boiler & After quenching chambers (AQC) boilers to recover heat energy for running boilers for electricity/power generation with the help of steam turbines. Typically, the 20 to 30 percent power requirement of the cement plant can be fulfilled using this waste heat for power generation applications, which is a substantial savings/reduction in the overall cost of production.
Efficient control of PH & AQC Boiler needs an accurate and reliable inlet or outlet gas flow rate which demands a flow measurement device suitable for high temperature and abrasion resistance design.
4. PRIMARY AIR FAN FLOW MEASUREMENT IN POWER GENERATION BOILERS
Cement Plant is installed with Captive Coal Power Plant for fulfilling additional needs of electricity apart from AQC & PH Waste heat recovery Boilers. Primary airflow into the boiler is important to monitor for maintaining optimum stoichiometric air-to-fuel ratio for achieving efficient combustion efficiency. A reliable and accurate primary air flow measurement is needed which has low-pressure drop and works well at low static pressure and low maintenance.
5. PROCESS & FLUE GAS FLOW MEASUREMENT IN EXHAUST STACK
Exhaust process flue gas from clinker cooler and boiler needs to be monitored by the pollution control authority for keeping control on emission guidelines is a must. This needs accurate and reliable flow measurement solutions which will help in achieving high thermal efficiency and improve ESP performance & help to regulate harmful pollutants emission controls & provides useful information on optimizing mass balance.
6. COMPRESSED AIR MEASUREMENT FOR UTILITY CONTROL AND CONSERVATION
Compressed air is used as a utility in cement plants for the efficient operation of pneumatic equipment used in packing plants and other miscellaneous use needs to be monitored as it is invisible energy as for producing 4 scfm compressed air one horsepower (HP) electrical energy is consumed.

Look at Me, Elijah.
Part of Fifty-Eight Days. Ties into this ask from the other day.
Consider this the precursor to the Day 58 chapter, coming next.
WARNINGS: Captivity whump, implied/referenced past noncon, PTSD, flashbacks/panic attacks, attempted consensual sex gone wrong. Elijah is doing like– really bad.
“Elijah.” Dr. Patel’s voice barely broke through his wall of panic, muffled from the other side of the palms pressed to his ears. “You’re having a panic attack. Can you open your eyes?”
He could. Couldn’t he? If Elijah opened his eyes, he would see the green-gray fabric of the pillows squeezed between his knuckles, the plush rug beneath his… his socks, right, because he always takes his shoes off before he comes to Dr. Patel’s office and– and that was where he was.
He was in his therapist’s office, thousands of miles from the scene that played over and over behind his eyelids. He would see that if he only opened his eyes.
But he couldn’t, and he didn’t, because some frightened, animal part of him was convinced that if he opened his eyes, he would see Myles Voss’s twisted smile leering down at him.
Elijah shook his head. His fingers curled tighter into the hair at his temples.
“That’s okay,” Dr. Patel said. “Just listen to my voice, then. Do you know where you are?”
Back there. He was back there. There would always be a part of him trapped inside the walls of Myles Voss’s compound, in his basement, in his bed. Even when he could feel the draft of warm air from the heater above the office window, smell the familiar waft of Dr. Patel’s coffee, he couldn’t convince his body that he was safe.
“I’m… I’m in your off-... your office,” he told himself.
“You are. You’re here, and you’re safe,” she said. “Do you want to talk about where your head is at right now?”
No. No.
“Elijah, your mother called me because these attacks are getting worse. Did something happen to trigger this downswing?”
Happen. Did something happen. He almost wants to laugh, because “did something happen” implies a certain passiveness in the event. Things happened to people, or because of them.
Myles Voss happened to Elijah because he couldn’t follow a simple directive of staying within the bounds of camp. Bad things happened to Grayson because he was a good enough person to try and follow him. This… This fucking shitstorm of a “downswing” happened because–
“I did something stupid.”
Dr. Patel waited a beat for him to continue, then asked, “Do you want to tell me about it?”
Not particularly.
“When was this?” She prompted at his continued silence.
“Three nights ago.”
“Saturday,” she confirmed. Elijah nodded. “Did you hurt yourself?”
This time, a strangled laugh did make its way out, bracketed by shallow breaths. “You could say that.”
“Elijah,” Her voice took on a more careful edge. “If you’re self-harming–”
“It wasn’t like that,” he said.
He could practically see her patient nod without having to open his eyes. “What was it like, then?”
A ping on his phone. Two words: I’m here.
A knock on the door. Socked feet shuffling across the carpet. A foil square visible through the pocket of his jeans.
“Elijah? Wow, you’re… Hi. I’m Seth.”
Elijah worked his jaw, scraping his fingernails over his scalp hard enough to sting. “I just wanted to prove something to myself. That I could– That he didn’t…” He swallowed. “That he didn’t ruin me.”
“Ruin you,” she repeated. “What do you mean by that?”
A noise of frustration broke in his throat. “I…. I wanted…”
The four-dollar wine from the corner store buzzes through his system, making the room impossibly warm around him.
“How do you want to do this?” the man asks.
Elijah keeps his eyes on the man’s hands. Tanned and calloused and, and nothing at all like–
“I needed to know that I still could,” he said. “I needed to feel something that wasn’t…” Him.
“Are we talking about sex, Elijah?” Dr. Patel asked bluntly.
Elijah’s fingers curled into fists in his hair. There was no point in running from it now.
“Yes.”
“You seem nervous. Are you sure you’re okay?”
“I’m fine.”
The man–Seth–presses another glass into his hand. “We don’t have to do this, you know.”
“I said I’m fine.”
“Is this… your first time with a guy or something?”
Elijah wonders what it would feel like to crush the glass in his palm.
“Hardly.”
“It’s normal to experiment with intimacy again after sexual trauma,” Dr. Patel offered evenly. “You’re not wrong for wanting that. It’s a matter of taking care of yourself in these situations. Did you know the person you connected with?”
“No. He was…” A flush crept up through his neck. Of all the things Elijah has expelled inside this room, this felt like a stupid detail to be embarrassed about. “I met him on an app.”
“So you met up with him in person,” she stated. Elijah nodded again. “What was he like?”
He thought about it. “He was nice. Attractive. Under normal circumstances…” He let that thought trail off, not wanting to think about just how far a distance existed between this and normal circumstances. “He didn’t do anything wrong,” he felt the need to clarify. “He didn’t hurt me or… or push me into anything like that.”
“That’s good,” she said. “But, it sounds like the encounter didn’t go exactly how you wanted. Am I understanding that right?”
You could fucking say that again.
His skin is clammy against the motel bedding as he’s lowered onto his back. The tacky floral stitching scratches against his bare skin. It was his idea to bottom, his idea to lay down face-to-face, but now he’s wondering if he should flip them over.
He doesn’t have time to think before warm body weight is pressed down onto him.
“I don’t want to kiss.” Elijah’s voice trembles out of him.
“Okay,” Seth says easily.
“And don’t touch my neck.”
“Okay.”
This is fine. This is going to be fine.
“It was going okay at first,” he told her. “I was… I was anxious, but the wine was helping. He could still feel me shaking, though.”
“Did he say something about it?”
Elijah swallowed. “Yeah,” he said. “That was why things went bad.”
Seth’s hand doesn’t even make it below the waist before shit hits the fan.
Elijah doesn’t realize he has his eyes pinched shut until a warm palm cradles his cheek. He flinches so violently it makes the man on top of him jump, too.
“Whoa,” he says, all gentleness and pity and everything Elijah doesn’t want to hear right now. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” Elijah bites back.
“It doesn’t seem like nothing.”
“It’s fine,” he insists, averting his eyes to the ceiling just over his shoulder. “Keep going.”
“‘Keep–’ Hey. Wait, just… look at me for a second.”
That’s all it takes to knock the Earth from its axis.
Look at me.
Look at me.
‘Look at me, Elijah.’
It’s not Seth’s voice anymore. Seth isn’t here.
It’s just him and… and….
“No,” he cries, pushing up against the weight on his chest. “Stop, stop, stop. Get off– Get off me. Get off!”
“Okay! Okay. I’m off. It’s okay.”
It’s okay.
‘It’s okay.’
‘It’s okay. It’s me. It’s just me, Elijah.’
No. Please, he can’t– He needs–
“Don’t,” he breathes as Seth takes a step toward him. Elijah doesn’t know when he scrambled to his feet, but he’s standing now, his back against the wall like a trapped animal.
Seth tries to say something else, but Elijah doesn’t hear it. It’s other voices in his head now, one voice in particular, that drowns out all other noise in the room as he sinks down the wall and onto the shitty motel carpet. It suddenly feels like concrete and dirt under his legs.
When he looks up, minutes or hours later, he is alone in the room.
“So you stopped things before they could go further.” Dr. Patel drew him back to the room with her steady voice.
“Yeah,” he said, tears pouring openly down his face now.
“Because your mind took you back to Myles.”
This time, he didn’t nod. He didn’t say anything for a minute. Then, for the first time since he sank down onto her couch at the beginning of the session, Elijah forced himself to lift his head and open his eyes.
She was watching him expectantly, patiently, and he could feel the words twisting into a spring, compressed inside his body from the months of pressure it took to force them down. The secret he refused to speak out loud.
Until now.
“No,” he admitted finally, the confession darkening over the brightness of the room like an oil spill. “It took me back to Grayson.”

And this is what the “raid” looked like most of the time: The “attacking” faction chatted their rivals up, helped themselves to their leftovers and danced to their stereo (until I broke it, but then they just turned to chat more). It was the most polite raid ever.
Robert: “It’s a party, guys! A raiding party, haha!”
Godefrey: “Hahaha! But don’t worry, Andersons. We’ll have eaten up and be on our way back to Detroit right in time for you to report to work tomorrow. Don’t want to get in the way of your rehabilitation!"
Daniel: “I can’t believe you take the loss so easy. That treasure destroyed Hank’s career and your whole future, Gavin! Returning it to the japanese government would have redeemed you all! But now... now we’ve got nothing...”
Gavin: *snore snore*
Daniel: “And how can play you SimClinch as if nothing had happened, Tina?!”
Tina: “Two words: thermostat assassination.”
In the common room one by one the Fowler enforcers felt nauseated. At first they didn’t think anything of it. Partying hard did that to a man, right? But then first Alexander and then Antony keeled over on the spot. The only one immune to the sudden breath impediment was Rika, the Fowlers’ android. But without anybody to give orders, she just went outside to play basketball:
Rika also took a bubble bath, she really enjoyed herself at this trip, as if it was a workplace outing instead of an attack. Most innocent soul in any parallel universe!
When the police arrived twenty-five minutes later, officer Patel could only stare in disbelief at the mobsters rendered helpless without any sign of physical violence.
Hank: “It was a gamble, really. We put stinkbugs into the room heaters. When the Fowler firm switched them on, the green bastards got stressed from too much heat. And when a stinkbug gets stressed, well, nomen est omen.”
Carlos: “Eww... How come you were immune?”
Hank: “Weren’t. We counted on us being able to hold up a couple of minutes longer from previous exposure to the little shitters.”
Gavin: “We’ve learned to be creative with trash, just like the landfill owners wanted us to, haha!”
