SUPPORT THE SCENE: PATCHMAKER DANIEL SKALPEL'S CANCER FIGHT
Supporting bands by buying their music and merch is massively important if you want to help them to keep going and do what they do best! And this is something we love to highlight here at TheNwothm. But today I am highlighting something a bit different. Cancer affects many people worldwide and of course many of us in the metal scene will have had family affected by cancer. So today I wanted to…

Heart patch process
Image ID: Four images of an embroidered patch of an anatomical heart at different stages of the sewing process. The patch has a black border, and a black outline with different sections of the heart filled in with shades of red, gold, and off-white. In the first it is finished and sewn onto a plaid shirt, in the second it is finished and just cut out, in the third it is almost finished and still in the embroidery hoop, and in the fourth it is just started and still in the embroidery hoop. End ID

Im an aspiring punk here ive wanting to start making my own stuff maby start a batle jacket or patch pants or somthing but those projects sound a bit intimidating. Do you have any recmondations on a good place to start?
hey ey!
to begin sorry for the late reply, i got a lot going on currently
to begin id advise collecting inspo for what kinda jackets/pants you want first. i use pinterest, tumblr and etsy to find inspo for my diy stuff. i like to sketch out different designs for my projects before making them, so i can try out what fits and what doesnt.
to practice id say starting by making patches and sewing them (use dental floss, its cheap and incredibly strong and durable) on for example a bag is the simplest way to introduce urself to patchmaking and sewing. i advise using the whip stitch to sew them on. when youre a bit more confident in ur skill level one of the easiest projects to start is a battlevest, since its mostly flat and straight fabric its easy to sew on and modify. most people find denim more difficult to sew on cause of its sturdiness but i prefer it for exactly that quality, it prevents the fabric from moving/stretching too much
you dont need expensive supplies, even stuff that might be seen as trash is very useful for punk diys, some old cloths and acrylic/fabric paint will already be enough for patches. i got a tutorial on my blog for stenciling them (let me know if you want me to link it). soda tabs can be used to make buttons/pins, chainmail, chains, and so much more. bottlecaps can also be made into different types of buttons/pins and chains (and more stuff i cant think of rn). you can get chains for cheap from hardware stores, id also keep an eye out for those chain dog collars in yardsales and such, theyre often very good quality (i got 3 all secondhand).
on that note, where can you find ur stuff for projects?? i get almost all my stuff secondhand. ive got at least 4 thriftstores nearby, and there are often fleamarkets around my area, which i always try to go to when i have the chance. fleamarkets are often announced in local newspapers or on posters around town. you might also find em by googling ur towns name and then "fleamarket" or "yardsale". if you live in a remote area where these things just dont exist i advise asking family/friends if they got old stuff they wanna get rid off. or to use online secondhand stores like vinted or depop (altho depop sellers often overprice, keep an eye out for cheap deals) for stuff you really cant get secondhand like spikes etc. i advise etsy. also if youre US based studsandspikes.com has tons of different spikes for cheap.
an important thing to remember is that your stuff wont and doesnt have to look perfect. your stuff will be messy and sometimes a project totally doesnt end up how you want and thats okay. fuck around and find out!

My first one I didn't exactly plan out the whole vest, but I did make all the patches before sewing them on. It was my challenge to myself for pride month to make a patch a day. I wanted to have all the patches done before I started attaching them so I didn't get into a situation where I have a patch that's too big or awkwardly shaped to fit into the remaining available area.
Plus it was fun to watch the stack of patches grow over the course of the month. It was like my dragon hoard :3
I'm low-key scared by people that plan their patch jackets and make all the patches before patching them, yall are like the people that keep their rooms clean constantly. Respect but like, how?
#i'm working on a jacket rn (and by working on i mean the base jacket itself isn't done) and that one i'm not planning out patch-wise#also gonna do that one MUCH slower bc i kinda burned myself out with my june patchmaking insanity

I've been thoroughly overjoyed with myself about practice patchmaking today!!!! I got the wrong ink at the craft store, and it *would* not stick to the brayer so I ended up just hand-painting over really thin prints off the linoblocks ^^"" I'm modge-podge-ing to seal them, rather than heat treating due to using the wrong paint type; we'll see how it goooooes Music exploration day!! Musical Tigers, dodie, Sir Please (all kind of in the general Indie-Sphere, all fun lyrical and driven by guitar rhythym), then Wing and Robin Cavaillês (both beatbox, from extremely different backgrounds and school of technique!!)
#My favourite function (u can call me a math nerd it's okay) is the inverse function 1/x - I love how magical it looks :x#The sea mine y'all've seen before - the binary star sigil has just been a personal symbol for a long time!!#The kanji read 'Daijoubu' or 'Alright' - it's an affirmative filler word (kinda like хорошо - another favourite)#I picked it i don't know how long ago as a name as a stand-in for any generic Corpo Group when writing#patch printing#printmaking#patches#diy punk

Hello! I’ve been trying to find good patches for a while and was wondering if you had any suggestions 👀
(from your store or ppl you know lol)
I mean we have a lot of patches (and I know a lot of cool patchmakers) so it depends on what you consider 'good patches'!
Got a particular theme or idea you're looking for, or a general vibe?

you mentioned making a v2 patch. first of all, i'm super hyped for it! but second of all, as someone else whos dabbled in patchmaking... could i ask about what digitizing software you use? i'm having trouble finding one that isn't hundreds of dollars.
if i understand the question correctly then to digitalize a patch i just take a photo of it and go over it in an art program manually (that's how i digitalized the gabriel one for example, for that one i used firealpaca but anything with layers will do i think)
#ask#the v2 one i ended up making was just a drawing of the plushie though hehe ^^ compared to the gabriel one it's very simple#so i don't think i'll be digitalizing that one

Now to self draft a dress! The patchmaking success has left me feeling charged and confident so I will be making the foolish decision of making a woven sweetheart dress from scratch
Do you think the "greats" of old used mysteriously greasy paper bags, tape, and a mixture of whatever writing implanents they could find to design?
This is V2, V1 didnt come together so I gotta redo my maths

also, perhaps not ideal for patchmaking specifically because it will generally be a bit too thin but - message your local hospital. old hospital bed linen can be a great way of sourcing large pieces of otherwise waste white/off white cloth. if it is mildly stained they are obligued to get rid of it (so they can be certain things are properly clean for hygeine reasons) so they'll often sell bulk old bed linen at very cheap rates. when i worked as an art technician in a local 6th form college this is how they sourced the majority of the fabric the students used for samples / to try out different techniques like dying etc.
I know Amazon isn't very punk–but given its chokehold on everything, kind of unavoidable at this point, especially if you're disabled and/or immunocompromised–and Etsy has its own set of problems, but if you need denim for patches and things or other types of fabric for crafting but you feel squeamish about cutting up perfectly wearable pants and such from the thrift stores, you can get fabric scraps from both sites for fairly cheap, even sometimes on prime. They tend to come from left over factory waste or independent fabric crafters and would otherwise be thrown away, so you're saving dye and sometimes synthetic/plastic fibers from leeching into a landfill and the environment. And Etsy claims carbon neutrality (an iffy claim in general, regardless of who's making it), and some Amazon shops also claim environmentally friendly.
You can also get leather scraps on both sites, which I have done for bookbinding projects. The only problem with that was that it was a grab bag of a pound of randomized embossed upholstery fabric, some in fairly equal sizes but some truly scraps. About two thirds of it was suitable for bookbinding, but out of that only half wasn't ridiculously ugly lol. Shouldn't be too hard to get fairly uniform denim scraps tho, especially if you're embroidering them into patches
