Sketchbook pages of record studies

I took photos of my collection of records and began to study the grooves.

I first did a study in oil pastels and scraped the radiating grooves into the pastels. I then just began to draw the rings themselves, overlapping them. I may use this design for a print. And then I trued pointilism. I don't feel pointilism captured the grooves as it is quite a loose technique.

I then tried spiral drawings. I first tried it free-hand and then using a compass. I like the looseness of the freehand more but I feel the compass drawn lines made a more cleaner image. I then tried this technique for a portrait and found it quite difficult. I feel like the lines should be MORE close to eachother in order for it to work properly.

I drew the influencer/ YouTuber, 'Mayo Japan.' As I also love Indian cinema and dancing, it's always a delight to watch her creative videos online! What makes her contents so lovable is how she shows respect towards Indian cultures and collaborates with other creators across borders, I think. This is my attempt to capture her radiant energy.

We used to have this plaster stucco wall in my old house with a similar visual texture to those impasto flowers. Plaster is very hard & kinda rough, & Mom hated that wall because it collected dust something fierce. I had always assumed those Thicc Paint Sworl paintings would have a similar feel to the stucco, but oil paint's probably softer & smoother than plaster now that I think about it. 🤔

Is oil paint very different from oil pastels? I did a pointillism oil pastel for an art class once & it never really "dried"; the piece kept smearing if anything touched it.

I’m very excited for my latest craft experiment, where I rhythmically slap sale rank oil paint onto a canvas and I see how long it takes to dry so that I can finally touch the paint textures I stare at so longingly in museums. 12 hours in, still wet. I am beginning to think this might take longer than I thought which you can imagine is quite a burden, as I am absolutely horned up to rub this paint.

Workshop

experiment more with how my video can be more visual , i watched lots of music videos and did some water colour swatches using different colours and shapes. I think it would be interesting to see the contrast of the lightness of the watercolor to the texture of oil pastel. i personally like the swirls , splashes , pointillism and brush strokes. I think these would be interesting to incorporate into the photography and some abstract frames too. It would also be interesting to see these as overlays. These swatches communicate different beats within the music and the senses. I feel with these being more soft they won't make the video too overwhelming but would add more.

moving on i further decided to test pastels and watercolour together

these were interesting tests but I didn’t Decide to include them in the final piece as i didnt think they fit very well and also due to time restraints. i also think that it was too much portraiture /figurative

As i was incorporating oil paints and photographs in my work. I needed to find a way to overlay these patterns as the watercolour may not work as well being on shiny paper and it would not show on oil paints.

so to develop this i traced over the patterns on procreate and then transformed it into a stencil that i could 3d print. I did this with my 3 favourite designs. These all turned out really well but i had to model them thinner than as this one as the paint would end up tunneling in the plastic rather than going through. This in the end worked well in 2mm but unfortunately as the design is so intricate some spirals snapped when lifting them off the bed. I still used these though as it created a different image and pattern. This developed my skills in blender but also testing spray paint. I had colours such as black, purple and blue but i chose black in the first scene as this i think shows the texture and the smoke of the underground tube coming through. it made some square imprints around the outside of the stencil which is a bit frustrating but this was also down to how far away i sprayed the stencil. As i was painting the oil and spray paint on plastic sheet so i could wipe and edit better , it created some fun ghost prints where it had dried a little which

'Self Portrait' as pastel crayoned by Henri Sudaner. Sidaner (1862-1939) was a contemporary of the Post-impressionists, but was called 'an intimist painter'. His paintings of domestic interiors and quiet street scenes were intimist, but also pointed towards Pointilism. Sidaner favoured subdued colours, nuanced greys and opals applied with uneven, dappled brushstrokes to create atmosphere and mysticism.
