Aspen Meet & Greet

We had such a great time meeting past, present, and prospective members at our summer Meet and Greet! As new editors, it is so great to connect with new and old friends alike. 

Koch Park was the perfect outdoor setting for this rustic chic event. Go West Events provided authentic and unique decor, including an antique canoe, playful swings, a teepee bathroom (!), airy lounge, and bar.

Once the torrential downpour passed, our bartender happily poured Pink Paloma cocktails, Entourage Rosé, and Aspen Brewing Company beers. Go West Events converted an old horse trailer into this mobile watering hole. From barn to bar - genius!

Guests had the chance to peruse dozens of TSG city guides at our Book Bar, as well as vote for our next cover color. With three choices, there was one clear winner! But you’ll all just have to wait until December, when Volume 6 launches, to see which one took home the most votes.

Abundance - A Spiritual Story

Just the thought of abundance makes you want to sing and dance. It’s a truly happy word that creates joyful visions of plenty. There are many stories to tell and yet this next one comes up for me and it’s filled with subtle psychic properties that thrill me. So, here goes……..

One day a young woman came highly recommended to my healing center in Southern California. My mum was working there too and she came for a Reflexology class. She was living in New Mexico and was staying with a friend who was attending the class.

I loved these little intimate classes, and this one was only filled with 6 students and my mum to help us. She loved it and visions often came up with the questions and the pressure point therapy being taught. We were all cozy during these classes.

Adriana from New Mexico brought salt glow lamps that I fell in love with. I bought 4 or 5 of them, some for the center and a couple for home. She spoke of her amazing life in a round adobe home in New Mexico and mum and I swooned, both admitting we’d never been there and would love to come visit.

Adriana mentioned that her man friend who owned the home, was riddled with cancer and would I consider coming up to do a healing session with him. I jumped at the chance asking if I could bring mum with. We left with a tentative date booked and time flew and the date came quickly.

It was late spring when mum and I sat on a plane, with a rental car booked and sessions planned. All was agreed to be paid, so the trip was basically free and we were going to see a new part of the country. We were excited. We rented a car with a navigation system as I have trouble finding my way out of a paper bag.

We met Adriana at the shop she worked at, and I honked at a random woman more that 300 feet away, my mum asked me what I was doing, and I simply nodded at her. I knew it was Adriana. That’s how the weekend was going to be, filled with abundant magic.

We followed her to the adobe home which wasn’t on our maps. It was rural and it was a true Southwestern round home. We walked in to the smell of marijuana permeating a gorgeous home. The fire was lit in the main room off the round gourmet kitchen, and when we removed shoes, the radiant floor was like looking deeply into the cosmos.

That home was abundant around each corner, with a round meditation room decorated in all cream with large cream cushions and beautiful floor mats that you could fall asleep in. There was green lush landscape all around the home and teepees outside that their native American Indian friends stayed in. One of them was there to greet me, looking curiously at me. His eyes followed me the whole time I was there, especially after the most extraordinary gourmet dinner was complete.

I felt my hands burning and my mum invited everyone to leave the dining room, to move into the round meditation room, to lay the owner with the cancerous issue, at front and center of the large comfy mat for me to work. Everyone stood and held space, including the Native American, who was quietly chanting a haunting and beautiful song.

I worked in his ribs and held space. Tears flowed and my hands were like oven mitts. The burning hot sensation didn’t leave even when I was complete. The man wept with me. He held my hand in his and we both knew we had just bought him more time. The rest of our time was spent with me helping Adriana with a dinner party she was hosting professionally making paella.

My mum was staying in the home where they were throwing a drum party with a few friends. She said it was lovely when we lay in bed later discussing our very different evenings. Hers was celebratory in the abundant home and she let me know everyone except her were pretty stoned. I laughed out loud at her descriptions, as the only sober one in the house, she relayed the activities and they were truly funny from her point of view. She was laughing too.

The next day Adriana created a “tea blessing ceremony” where we sat and drank tea while meditating and viewing our tea cups for any messages, which she was adept at reading. It was a lovely experience. We all felt close and connected. She was a real gift to mum and I.

When we left there we had experienced a deeply abundant time with all the elements of healing, fun, good food, and great company. We sat on the plane talking and smiling into our own abundant experience with New Mexico and all that had come with it. We felt really lucky and our good fortune was our abundance. We traveled home with more joy than we had left with and all the excitement of the trip ahead was met with the reality of a great time.

Taco ‘Bout a Good Time: A Colorful Cinco de Mayo Wedding at Brookview Ranch

Megan + Phillip have quite the love story—their proposal involved the two of them jumping out of a plane together and then a ring was presented at the end. I mean, what?! Well, a year after that epic proposal, M+P said their vows at Brookview Ranch on May 5th. Their photographer, Brooke Borough, shares: Since they were having their wedding on Cinco de Mayo, they knew they wanted to incorporate it into their wedding décor. And they totally did just that—looking through the photos you will see a TON of color and culture, from both Phillip’s side, as well as Megan’s.

Megan is a model for Show Me Your Mumu, so they worked with her to create a custom color, exclusive for her wedding. How fun is that? Brimming with brilliant mustard yellows, tons of bright pink bougainvillea, and rounded out by gorgeous blue hues, we have a feeling you might just fall head over heels for their big day, planned by Karen Marie Events.

The Wedding Party

Isn’t that mustard yellow hue STUNNING?! We dig that Show Me Your Mumu has so many different style options, so your ladies can choose their fave, while still creating a cohesive look.

Note: You might recognize one of the bridesmaids—Bri—from the latest season of the Bachelor (she was the gal with the fake Australian accent).

Megan rocked not one, but TWO gorgeous gowns. The first was this lacy Berta gown from Mon Amie Bridal Salon, and the second (you’ll see later on) was a custom gown from Katie May.

Here at GWS, we have a *thing* for bougainvillea… Naturally, our jaws dropped when we saw this brilliant ceremony space with florals by Wildflowers Floral Design.

I mean would you look at all those vibrant pink hues?! GORGEOUS!

Our Favorite Memory From The Wedding

The most memorable part of the wedding was our vows. I still cry every time I daydream about that moment. It was as if the whole world stood still and all I could hear was Phillip's voice; all I could see were his quivering lips and all I could feel was the pride and confidence in his voice as he put his heart on his sleeve. As we walked away as husband and wife, everyone I made eye contact with was crying and everyone’s energy was radiating with such love and joy. It wasn’t just the most memorable moment from the wedding, it was the most memorable moment of my entire life.

Megan tells us: I found my inspiration from the colors and prints at Show Me Your Mumu and spun the vibe and theme off the day of the wedding: Cinco de Mayo. Phillip asked me to be his girlfriend on the 5th, his wife on the 5th, and wore the number 5 on his back his entire career as an athlete. When we realized we would be getting married on the 5th of May, I just ran with it and knew my neutral color wedding palette was going out the door. It wasn’t us anyway. Phillip and I are bright and colorful and we wanted our décor to reflect that.

Taco ‘Bout a Good Time—how cute is this acrylic seating chart?!

Phillip’s uncles crafted the teepee and his step-dad made all the other décor: the fruit stand, the seating chart, the table numbers, any and every wood piece he whittled in his little garage shop.

All of the napkins and pillow for the day were made from leftover fabric from the bridesmaids’ dresses. Such a good way to make sure everything goes to good use + to keep the palette cohesive!

Oh, and those darling soap favors? Megan’s aunt, Jenny, crafted them!

Phillip being an athlete and our love story revolving around distance and Phillip’s soccer journey—we had to run though a banner for our reception as husband and wife, naturally. ;)

Airbnb is using what3words to list stays with Mongolian nomads

Putting a new spin on the term “digital nomad,” U.K. addressing platform what3words has partnered with Airbnb to list stays with Mongolian nomads.

The startup’s simplified addressing system is being applied to help adventurous travelers “home share” with Dukha reindeer herders at their mountain camp where there aren’t any street names to anchor a trip. 

The partnership is slated as supporting sustainable tourism by helping the tribe tap into a new revenue stream to support its traditional way of life.

Earlier this year, Airbnb signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia to use home sharing as a route for economic empowerment and community development. “The MOU will see both parties provide hospitality training for current hosts, as well as potential hosts in rural and remote areas, to encourage the adoption of new digital technology for tourism,” they note in a press release today.

The Airbnb listing with the Dukha reindeer herders offers the chance to stay in a teepee in the Taiga forest in Northern Mongolia, with guests getting “two wooden beds, sleeping bags and an open-fire stove for heating and cooking, as well as full access to the reindeer tribe’s backyard.”

So definitely not the usual Airbnb fare.

what3word comes into play as a neat tool because guests are asked to meet the nomadic tribe at a previously communicated three-word address at the edge of the forest.

what3word’s platform chunks the world into 57 trillion 3-by-3 meter squares — each of which has been assigned three words to act as its easier-to-share pinpoint. Using unique combinations of words for geolocation reduces the risk of confusing two similar-sounding street names, for example, and means a location can easily be shared verbally or read at a glance. 

After meeting their hosts at the forest edge, guests ascend with them to the mountain to the camp — located at ///evaluate.video.nails — either on reindeer or by horse.

Travelers can then expect to be “immersed in the day-to-day life of the tribe, from herding and milking reindeer to cooking traditional Mongolian dishes and making handicrafts,” they add.

The tribe uses a co-host in an urban location to manage the process of updating their Airbnb listing with a new three-word address, as needed (i.e. when they shift the location of their camp).

Commenting on the partnership in a statement, Cameron Sinclair, social innovation lead at Airbnb, said:  “Airbnb is excited to partner with what3words and the Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Mongolia to drive sustainable tourism and economic empowerment, while promoting the unique hospitality and culture so intrinsic to the country.

“In Mongolia, a lack of traditional street addressing and nomadic way of life have prevented locals from welcoming Airbnb guests into their homes. Our partnership delivers an innovative way to provide hosts with an accurate and reliable address while constantly on the move, and creates new livelihood opportunities for nomadic and rural communities in Mongolia and around the world.”

A spokeswoman for what3words confirmed the partnership is limited to Mongolia for now — but added it’s “exploring next steps with Airbnb” in the hopes of expanding the collaboration.

There’s no financial component to the arrangement as yet because what3words is free for individuals to use (so in this case the Dukha reindeer herders). 

But the startup does sell b2b licenses for other products, including its API and SDKs — offering optional extras like very large-scale batch conversion of three-word addresses to GPS coordinates or vice versa.

So if Airbnb sees enough value in ramping up offers of alternative tourist experiences on its platform — and in what3words’ three-word address system as the easiest way to grease and thus scale that pipe — it could end up sending something more than a bit of publicity the startup’s way.

That’s clearly what3words’ hope.

“what3words is incredibly useful for guests trying to find their Airbnb — be it in the centre of Madrid, or the on the Mongolian Steppe,” the spokeswoman told us. “We’re already seeing many hosts provide guests with their 3 word address, and we’d love to make the process as seamless as possible.”

One growth headwind for Airbnb’s business could work in what3words’ favor because the home-sharing platform may well need to invest in finding innovative and sustainable routes to grow its business, given a growing backlash against overtourism in popular destination cities that have been saddled with the real-world impacts of homes being repurposed as de facto hotels (and travel generally being more affordable).

In recent years residents in cities where Airbnb is popular have been vocal in complaining that such platforms bring problems — from antisocial impacts such as noise and drunken partying to more structural issues as they contribute to driving up rents by removing housing stock, with the risk of undermining local communities if residents get priced out.

And a growing number of cities have responded to these concerns by tightening regulations on home-sharing — throwing up blockers and sometimes hard caps on Airbnb’s growth.

A requirement that hosts register with the city in San Francisco so it can enforce vacation-rental laws to prevent homes being repurposed as year-round tourist lets led to a dramatic decline in Airbnb listings at the start of this year, for example.

But it looks to be the opposite story in Mongolia where politicians are focused on development and keen to attract outside investment. And where tourists are — at least for now — welcome visitors.
