September Challenge– Days 5 & 6
So while Part the Waterveil is a spell pulled from Magic: the Gathering, I wanted to make sure this challenge didn’t focus too much on cards from there (at least at first) so they don’t pop up too frequently. And of course, there’s a bit of Dishonored inspiration in the Outsider’s Fingerbones.

Note
If I have Cast Through Time out and cast a spell that exiles itself as part of its effect like Spelltwine or Temporal Mastery, do I still get to choose to exile it for Rebound or not?
No, it exiles itself before it can rebound.
The part of Rebound’s effect that exiles spells so that you can re-cast them on your next upkeep is a replacement effect that causes a resolving spell to be exiled instead of going to the graveyard as the last step of its resolution. This step happens after all of the spell’s own instructions have happened. Spells that exile themselves do so as an explicit instruction and thus are no longer on the stack when they would normally go to the graveyard. Since they’re not on the stack anymore, rebound’s effect can’t move them anywhere and thus they won’t rebound on your next turn.

14 mana: take as many extra turns as you have lands, also all your lands are 6/6s. if 14 mana is too much for you then just run the original Radiate + Part the Waterveil in a Mizzix deck to make the whole combo cost RRUUU

An interesting card. (2)
Card Name: Magosi, the Waterveil
Set: Zendikar.
Collector Number: 218/249
Oracle Text:
Land
Magosi, the Waterveil enters the battlefield tapped.
{T}: Add {U}.
{U}, {T}: Put an eon counter on Magosi, the Waterveil. Skip your next turn.
{T}, Remove an eon counter from Magosi, the Waterveil and return it to its owner’s hand: Take an extra turn after this one.
Tumblr media
Artist: Eric Deschamps
Pros:
Taps for {U}.
Not a legendary card.
Technically an extra turns card.
Cons:
Enters the battlefield tapped. Kinda bad when all of its activated abilities require you to tap it. Amulet of Vigor?
You have to skip a turn to get an extra turn.
The 4th ability reuires you to return Magosi, the Waterveil to your hand as part of the cost. No untap shenanigans.
Some Commentary:
If you have Solemnity out, the 3rd ability says "skip your next turn."
As of today, March 22, 2019, the market price is about $0.35 for a non-foil copy. The price hasn't really changed since 2012. That is 7 years of no growth. I will confidently say that it will never go up unless WOTC prints some weird new card. Think along the lines of a reverse Ugin's Nexus.
Tumblr media
If you make Magosi, the Waterveil into a creature, then you can move the eon counters onto another creature with Leech Bonder or Fate Transfer.

BFZ Rotation Picks
Okay, rotation’s here. What do we need to pick up for EDH?
We got a main menu, and budget picks, and all our choices are rare and up. Uncommons will be listed in a splurge at the end (they’re good enough to mention), and commons ignored.
Main Menu (everything over a dollar)
(1) Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
Tumblr media
The be-all, end-all planewalkers of friggin years now, who somehow never got banned. He’s fallen from his pedestal of 20 bucks to a more reasonable 6ish now.
He’s used a bit in Modern, and I think like once in Legacy, so he’ll never be a 2 dollar walker, but the rest of us EDH players think this is fine.
(2) Literally Every Rare Land
Tumblr media
From battlelands to part of the creatureland cycle, they’re all phenomenal. Shrine of the Forsaken Gods and Sanctum of Ugin like artifact decks, Ally Encampment is a good tribal pick.
(3) Part the Waterveil
Extra turns are really rare.
Tumblr media
So six mana and self-exile? Worth it, especially with the option to awaken (options make everything better).
(4) Dragonmaster Outcast
My favorite reprint of the BFZ set.
Not like there was a lot of overkill.
Tumblr media
It makes a great addition to the new C17 Dragon decks.
Or really any deck. It eats removal like a champ (cuz pings are super rare in EDH), otherwise it generates great value every turn.
(5) Ob Nixilis Reignited / Kiora, Master of the Depths
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cheaper ‘walkers of the set, Ob and Kiora are decent enough in EDH decks in their colors. Not super powerful, but solid choices.
And they’re relatively cheap, with no play in Modern or other non-rotating formats. Plus, with the legendary planeswalker rule change, they’re like...1% better, for those, like 2 decks that run multiple Kioras or Obs.
Legendaries
Munda - Must-have for Ally tribal
Zada - Combat tricks are viable!
Omnath - Stable at a dollar, a solid fun ramp commander
Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger - Price didn’t drop with rotation, and wasn’t cheap before
Budget Picks
Sire of Stagnation - Fat milling monster
Felidar Sovreign - Solid option for Lifegain decks. If you don’t have it, get it.
Planar Outburst - Another board wipe. It was already a bulk rare, it still is. Extra board wipes are always welcome
Quarantine Field - A big flashy removal spell is always fun in EDH
Ugin’s Insight - Flashy spell, and digging big into you deck when you have a CMC 10+ creature around is amazing.
Ruinous Path - Sorc speed removal is a pain, but the awaken option is nice.
Nissa’s Renewal - Late game ramp and fixing, and a meaningful amount of lifegain
Greenwarden of Musara - It’s no Eternal Witness but it’ll do
Beastcaller Savant - Solid option in creature heavy decks
Aligned Hedron Netwrok - Sometime the field is full of scary creatures. Make them go away with this.
Uncommons
Stasis Snare - Removal at flash is nice!
Zulaport Cutthroat - Alternate backup to Blood Artist
Vampiric Rites - Sac outlet, and draw
Grip of Desolation - Overpriced flashy option, but I like exiling stuff at instant speed, even at that cost
Sylvan Scrying - Great uncommon that fetches
Bane of Bala Ged  - ANNIHILATORRRRRRRR!!! (basically)

Have to make an official list probably tomorrow (later today, since it’s acutally 4 in the morning* and I’ll properly tag folks that asked (I have to hunt down all the names)
But these are all the cards I’m willing to trade, sorted mostly by color. all foils are to the right side. Not sure how clear it is at the moment though.
As for things I’m looking for? Top of my list are things that I’m likely not to get with this pile (unless someone just wanted that many cheap rares and foils). Still, I’m going to put the top items I would love to get, then under a cut, I’ll just list everything in current standard I don’t have a playset of XD In general, just feel free to make an offer. But specific cards that are on my wish list are: Top cards I wish I could have: Ornathopter MP and Foil KLD Mox Opal MP Dark Ritual MP Rings of Brighthearth Crucible of Worlds Sword of Feast and Famine Sword of Light and shadow Sword of Fire and ice Aether Vial Aggravaged assault Worship Wrath of god Conspiriacy The Kaldra artifacts (sword/shield/helmet) Anafenza the Foremost Kolaghan's command Atarka's command

@magicjudge hi judge! I got a few questions for you:
I played with my commander Yidris, and all the spells i casted from my hand gained cascade:
-How does it work with alternative costs like awaken? (i’ve casted Part the Waterveil for its awaken cost and i didn’t know if i have to cascade it for a cmc of 9 or 6)
-How does it interact with Storm? (does the Mind’s desires copies also gain cascade?)
And one more question: if i cast a sorcery with a threshold effect, and as i cast it there are 6 cards in my graveyard, does the sorcery with threshold count on my graveyard as the 7th card? The same question goes for spell mastery.
Thank you for your time! Greetings from Argentina!

Concentrate upon your question, and draw from a deck of 127 mythic rare non-multicolored non-Creature cards...
The Past
Chandra, Pyrogenius
{4}{R}{R}
Planeswalker — Chandra
+2: Chandra, Pyrogenius deals 2 damage to each opponent.
−3: Chandra, Pyrogenius deals 4 damage to target creature.
−10: Chandra, Pyrogenius deals 6 damage to target player and each creature he or she controls.
{5}
The Present
Tamiyo, the Moon Sage
{3}{U}{U}
Planeswalker — Tamiyo
+1: Tap target permanent. It doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step.
−2: Draw a card for each tapped creature target player controls.
−8: You get an emblem with "You have no maximum hand size" and "Whenever a card is put into your graveyard from anywhere, you may return it to your hand."
{4}
The Future
Part the Waterveil
{4}{U}{U}
Sorcery
Take an extra turn after this one. Exile Part the Waterveil.
Awaken 6—{6}{U}{U}{U} (If you cast this spell for {6}{U}{U}{U}, also put six +1/+1 counters on target land you control and it becomes a 0/0 Elemental creature with haste. It's still a land.)

Garbage Fire Generals Article 2: Lu Su, Wu Advisor
Tumblr media
Welcome to the second article for Garbage Fire Generals! In this article, I’ll be analyzing one of the least popular Mono Blue Commanders - Lu Su, Wu Advisor. Check it out under the cut!
Previous articles:
Rashida Scalebane (W)
Tumblr media
Ah, blue. One of the most comforting colors. There's always something about having that security of blue spells in your hand that just says "this is going to be a fun game of EDH for me personally."
Lu Su, Wu Advisor is a very old card with an ability that's not entirely terrible. Sure, most of the time you want much more flexibility as to when you draw a card, but he at least draws you a card, and what more could you want out of blue? And sure, Azami costs the same and lets you not only tap to draw a card at any time but also get value out of ALL your wizards, but is she an Advisor? No, she is not. She's just a boring wizard.
I had a lot of thoughts about this card. Not all of them were cohesive or nice. As soon as I found out he was actually an Advisor, I decided to add a small Advisor tribal theme, which I’ll get to later. For now, let’s focus on Lu Su himself and his specific abilities.
Tumblr media
These are all ways to get lots of card drawing out of Lu Su. Another way is by untapping. Wanna know a color that's good at untapping things? That's right, it's Baby Blue. Everything from a tiny Cerulean Wisps to a repeatable Galvanic Alchemist will work here.
Tumblr media
Artifacts also have plenty of options, from the single target Magewright’s Stone to the full in Paradox Engine (possibly one of my favorite cards from current standard).
Tumblr media
What do we do with all those cards getting drawn? How on earth do we win a game in mono blue with so many cards in our hands? Maybe Laboratory Maniac can help us out. Or Aeon Chronicler. Jushi Apprentice // Tomoya the Revealer can be an interesting win-more (and what is EDH without win mores?). Meishin, the Mind Cage is a great way to calm down your opponent's angriest creatures. Descendant of Soramaro can arrange the cards of our library. Or we can just have our Brine Seer stare at our opponent, scaring them off from even trying to cast spells with his unnerving eyes.
Tumblr media
There's also plenty of blue cards that reward the card draw trigger itself. Archmage Ascension turns card draw into tutoring. Chasm Skulker gets bigger and can explode into little squids. Sphinx's Tutelage is great for those going the mill route (good luck).
Tumblr media
For artifacts, how about Psychosis Crawler? Or Moonring Mirror just in case you run out of good cards in hand?
At this point, we're definitely toeing the line between building a Lu Su deck and building a Mono Blue Goodstuff deck. Maybe more than toeing. Which brings me back to my original idea for a tribal advisor deck.
Tumblr media
Searching up mono blue advisors has taught me a lot of things. It taught me that Civilized Scholar is an Advisor, a fact I never noticed after years of playing the card. It reminded me that you can't technically play Civilized Scholar in this deck because it flips to red, a fact that made me sad. However, all is not lost, and there are plenty of mono-blue advisors that actually work with our already established themes of rewarding and abusing card draw.
Tumblr media
Council of Advisors draws a card upon entering the battlefield. Lady Sun bounces herself and another creature (works with both removing problems and ETB effects (only works on your turn before you attack.). Novijen Sages draws you cards by itself. Trusted Advisor is a cheap way to increase your hand size and bounces blue creatures for repeating ETB effects. Zhuge Jin, Wu Strategist is an odd duck here, since we haven't really dealt with combat in this deck much, but making something unblockable is nothing to sneeze at in any situation. Finally, there's Minister of Inquiries, a fairly recent card with an effect you may or may not want to use, since it a) mills in EDH and b) uses energy in a deck not really dedicated to energy. But hey, he's a one drop.
Tumblr media
For a tribal route, you'll want the right tribal staples. There's the aforementioned Faces of the Past, which untaps things, something this deck likes to keep tapping for value. In the last article I mentioned Riptide Replicator and Volrath's Laboratory, both great cards to help supplement a tiny tribe. Now we're in blue, meaning we have more options, such as Xenograft. Cards like Distant Melody will let us draw more cards for creatures.
Tumblr media
For artifacts, the recently printed Metallic Mimic could be nice, though it would mainly serve the purpose of being another Advisor. Same with Adaptive Automaton.
Tumblr media
Naturally, you'll want a suite of typical blue good stuff, all depending on what first in your budget. Get your Counterspells, your Cryptic Commands, your Cyclonic Rifts, your Brainstorms, your Sphinxes, your Metamorphs. Navigate your way on a Cruise to waste your opponent's Time, if you catch my Drift.
Tumblr media
For this deck in particular, cards I recommend include Inundate (bounces all things except your creatures), Propaganda (let's be honest, advisors are scrawny, we have to defend ourselves from the stompy player somehow), Freed from the Real (another way to untap things), and Morphling (serves as yet another Advisor).
Tumblr media
II’d also recommend cards that make it your turn more often in order to get value out of your various advisors that only work on you turn. It turns out one of the easiest things to do in magic is to find blue cards that give extra turns. Jam Capture of Jingzhou, Expropriate, Part the Waterveil, Temporal Mastery... all of these things and more are great ways to really enjoy a game all by yourself.
Tumblr media
That concludes this article. I hope that my deck analysis helps you build the Lu Su, Wu Advisor deck you’ve always dreamed of. If this deck isn’t your style, there’s plenty more where that came from in the next article of Garbage Fire Generals.

Deck Tech - Revel in Riches
One hot-off-the-presses win-con, coming through!
Tumblr media
Revel in Riches is the latest in a long history of winning by not beating or milling an opponent to death.
There’s a lot of ways to make treasure:
some of the  Grixis cards of Ixalan have treasure making capacity
Killing stuff while Revel is on the field
Artifact replication cards
Optimally, we have an instant kill spell or treasure making option to get us to ten before one of our upkeeps. We have one choice to make first:
(1) A Grixis Deck
(2) Breya
Grixis colors are our best bet, as it allows us to have all the cards from Ixalan that make treasure in the deck.
Adding white lets us have some enchantment play - tutoring, recurring from the GY, and protection, making it easier to work with Revel against removal.
We have several parts here -
Treasure Creation
Instant Speed “kills” (not exiles)
“Destroy” board wipes (not bounce or exile)
Extra Turns
Artifact copying, Synergy
Enchantment Synergy (White additions)
Tumblr media
(1) Treasure Creation
We have the room to include all of the Treasure cards, and they’re actually pretty playable.
Here’s a chart! (abbreviations below)
Tumblr media
OC- overcosted,
CS - counterspell
There’s sixteen in total, and roughly all of them are playable. You may want to cut out some of the weaker effects based on personal design.
(2) Killing Stuff for Fun and Profit
Revels us a treasure every time an opponent’s creature dies. So we need some killing options.
Repeatable options:
Tumblr media
Attrition - A classic for decks that don’t care about their creatures
Avatar of Woe - Probably playable for BB by midgame
Spreading Plague - Let everyone die. A lot.
Slaughter costs 4, but it’s instant and has a buyback for 4 life.
Heat Stroke, Death Pits of Rath, No Mercy, No Quarter - combat and damage based toys that may be interesting
We’ll also want Arcane Lighthouse so we can target anything we want.
Then we have some instant removal.
Unconditional:
Tumblr media
Doom Blade. Always a Classic
Victim of the Night, Vendetta, Ultimate Price, Toxic Stench, Terror, Terminate, Snuff Out, Slaughter Pact, Rend Flesh, Rapid Hybridization, Pongify, Murderous Cut (when you delve), Malicious Affliction, Go For the Throat, Ghastly Demise, Eyeblight’s Ending, Expunge, Doom Blade, Devour in Shadow are all “kill something” with conditions and discounts. Usually have an easy cost of 2C, or 1 or 2 CMC, with the inability to target some colors, creature types, or need life payment.
Unlicensed Disintegration, Reckless Spite, Hero’s Demise, Crosis’s Charm, and strictly better Murder from any given set are all 3 drop removals, which is the most I want to hold up for an end of turn removal.
I’m not including sorceries, as the idea is to use instant speed to take out something to win with Revel next turn.
Tumblr media
Next is board wipes.
Here is where the addition of White helps. Akroma’s Vengeance, Austere Command, Catastrophe, Day of Judgement, Dusk to Dawn, Elspeth Sun’s Champion, End Hostilities, Fated Retribution (Instant), Fumigate, Hour of Reckoning, Kirtar’s Wrath, Mageta the Lion (I), March of Souls, Myojin of Cleansing Fire (I), Phyrexian Rebirth, Planar Outburst, Rout (I), Solar Tide, Sublime Exhalation, Supreme Verdict, Winds of Rath, and the classic, Wrath of God. Instant speed options are especially nice.
Not white wipes killing wipes include Star of Extinction (ixalan newbie!) Blasphemous Act, Damnation, Hellfire, Hour of Devastation, Crux of Fate, Deadly Tempest, Decree of Pain, Devastation, Extinguish All Hope, In Garruk’s Wake, Life’s Finale, Plague Wind, Rain of Daggers. Plus there’s the -X/-X options of Bane of the Living, Languish, Toxic Deluge, and Yahenni’s Expertise.
They’re solid options, and you want a couple to fire off after you get Revel on the field, and a single one should get you enough treasure to win.
Tumblr media
Okay. We have some treasure. We’ve killed some creatures. But maybe we need more treasure. Or Revel in Riches has been chucked in the yard, or is still in your library. You need cards to tutor it. You need mana to cast it. You need treasure to finish. You need time.
Extra turns come in two flavors - blue options, and red’s DO OR DIE options.
Sure, Time Walk is banned in EDH (as it should be!), but there’s plenty of other toys.
Generic: Beacon of Tomorrow is eventually repeatable for 8CMC, Capture of Jingzhou is 5CMC (kinda a standard for vanilla extra turns), Expropriate nets you at least one extra turn if you vote for it at 9CMC, Part the Waterveil has awaken option at 6CMC, Ral Zarek’s ult can net you 5 turns, and averages at least 2, Savor the Moment is the most bare bones option at 3CMC and no untap step, Temporal Manipulation is another generic 5CMC, Temporal Manipulation is a miracle Time Walk, and decent enough for 7CMC, Temporal Trespass can delve to be discounted from 11CMC to UUU, Time Stretch is two extra turns for 10 CMC, Time Warp is a generic 5CMC extra turn, Aeons Walk is 6CMC and has buyback for sac’ing 3 Islands.
Tumblr media
DO OR DIE: Final Fortune is instant speed for RR, and  Last Chance and Warrior’s Oath are sorcery speed for RR. All of them kill you at the next end step, but it’s worth it. Glorious End ends the turn, which nets you an extra turn not dead, but kill you at your next end step (but any end the turn effects help with these, so consider Sundial of the Infinite and Day’s Undoing as part of this package).
Bad Choices: Lighthouse Chronologist isn’t bad but doesn’t work for this deck as we can’t protect it, Magistrate's Scepter is not worth the mana investment, and is visible a mile away, Magosi, the Waterveil doesn’t work without proliferate or some similar option, Noxious Throng and Plea for Power are unreliable here, Sage of Hours doesn’t work in our build, Search the City doesn’t work in EDH, Second Chance and Stitch in Time and Temporal Extortion are unreliable in EDH, Time Sieve would have us kill our treasure for turns
Next up is artifact cloning, resurrection, basically anything else.
Tumblr media
Now conventional Clone creatures (enter the battlefield as X) that copy creatures that ETB and make treasures are solid additions, especially those like Stunt Double. Mechanized Production also helps, and offers a backup alternate win-con (winning at 8 treasure), or working with Breya to copy thopters or something.
Rapid fire for the rest
Mass Blinking
Mass Resurrection
Mass Copying
Enchantment Package - (plus White)
White is great at getting tutoring enchantments, with cards like Enlightened Tutor and Academy Rector supplementing a black tutor package.
Recovery - White
White also protects and recurs Revel really well. Emeria Angel, Profound Journey and Obzedat’s Aid get it back into play, and a bunch of cards (Argivian Find, Auramancer, Dawn to Dusk, etc).
Other options like Greater Auramancy and Fountain Watch protect it from harm. Worst comes to worse, and Revels gets exiled? There’s even Pull from Eternity (though that’s seriously just a tech card. don’t maindeck it)
Whew. That’s a lot to digest.
I don’t think I’ve written a deck tech that long.
Tumblr media
See y’all round the fire, campers.

FNM 3/17/17 - MTG FEVER!!!!
Tumblr media
To be honest tonight I was contemplating whether or not to do Modern tonight with the success of my Goblin deck against my Sphinx’s Tutelage deck but man am I glad I didn’t.  I seriously don’t remember the last time I had this much fun at a FNM since about a year ago when I went to Tradesmart and got my first FNM promo.  When I first walked into the store I felt something different and it wasn’t until later that I realized that for the first time I was actually there for FNM while it was still light out because with the recent time change which was good for me because last week when I drove there the sun was in my eyes almost the whole time and tonight it was a lot better.  What I didn’t know when I walked in was that Modern Masters 2017 came out so there were a TON of people there to pick up boxes (I actually saw a guy in between rounds try to buy a box but his credit card got declined twice forcing him to just buy ten packs).  Instead of getting my usual two packs of the latest set I got a pack of Modern Masters in the hope I would get something good which I didn’t.
For the second week in a row I actually went 3-1!!  I don’t know what it was that did it but whatever it was it helped.  First of all when I signed up I put my name on the top line with the words like “name” and stuff and one of the coordinators almost didn’t see me.  I also bought a Coca Cola instead of my usual Dr. Pepper because they were out and forgot my dice bag at home (due to my deck testing) and had to borrow some so any of those things could have caused me to do better but whatever it was the gods of Theros shined down on me and gave me some serious luck.
First round I lost like I expected but the second round I actually won.  My opponent got off to a bad start in a couple games and in the third one we had this battle of counters where I countered at least three of his spells and triggered Prowess at least four times on my Stormchaser Mage, one of which was a Torrential Gearhulk.  I got him down to one life and then when I drew an Incendiary Flow I immediately showed it to him and he conceded.  Then the third round I won pretty aggressively against a guy I almost always do.  I got his life down with Fevered Visions and then burned him with Fiery Temper.
Between rounds 3 and 4 a couple guys approached me and asked me to trade which I agreed to since I always bring my trade binder with me when I go to FNM.  I made a TON of good trades like for these babies which are going into my Tutelage deck:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also got a couple Dynavolt Towers (my first round I lost to a guy with a deck that revolved around it and I’m considering switching out Fevered Visions with Dynavolt Tower and see how that does), Dictate of Kruphix (for my Tutelage deck), Part the Waterveil, Disciple of the Ring, and Erebos’s Titan.
Then came round four and I was expecting to lose like I always do.  My opponent had a deck that revolved around Artifacts.  I lost the first game with the Marionette Master/Tezzeret combo (which I never thought of before) but then I exchanged my sideboard with cards to help me deal with them like Ceremonious Rejection and Ironwright’s Cleansing.
Tumblr media
Ironwright’s Cleansing was a HUGE lifesaver tonight, especially in my second round when my opponent got a Dynavolt Tower out and I was able to get rid of it before he could kill me with it.  I actually used it to get rid of a Heart of Kiran which might have meant the difference between winning and losing.  I won the second round and we went to the third where I started out with a land deficiency but I came back and got a Fevered Visions out and he had a couple Inspired Statuaries out.  I got him down to less than three and then he enchanged one of them with a Tezzeret’s Touch and I thought I was done but he didn’t attack with it (and he could have to win the game) and I was able to burn him with Fiery Temper for the win.  I also made some more trades after the round with someone else for cards like Narset, Enlightened Master, and Ojutai Exemplars.
Even though I took eighth (for some reason) I still had an AMAZING night and left with my promo to complete my Electrostatic Pummeller deck.  I can’t wait to take it for a spin.  Next week I might even do Standard to test it out even though I alternate between Standard/Modern and Draft.  I’ll test it against my Fevered Visions deck and if it does better than I will.
