My favourite genre of fanfic are ones set in London written by someone who has obviously never ever set foot in London. They write a utopia where the main characters all have cars which they park right outside their central London houses. They simply hop in and drive to their destination and are there in no time. Travel Destination Posts - December - Disneyland Paris

Unusually, I'm going to start this post categorically saying that this wasn't top of the my list of places to visit in the world, and if you've read my other posts you'll see this is a little out of character. So, why go and why Christmas?

Well, the answer to the first question is "kids" and the second bit is more to do with family politics and deciding years ago to vacation at Christmas to avoid the whole uncomfortable situation.... but that's a whole other story.

I'm sure I'm not far from the truth when I say that most adults visit any Disney resort because they have kids, especially Paris. Before ours, it wouldn't have been anywhere near somewhere we'd contemplate - after-all why go to Disneyland when you have the delights of Paris on the doorstep.

I’m sure you’ve probably sussed already that I’m not a fan of Disneyland Paris – I much preferred Disneyland in California mainly because it was a day accommodated into a wider, varied holiday. We had a stressful holiday full of problems, so this will be unlike any of my other reviews; instead of a guide of highlights and extolling the virtues of the place, this is more of a guide to what not to do and hopefully ensure people don’t make the same mistakes we did.

Anyway, you’ve decided to do a Disney theme park. It doesn’t matter whether that be Paris, Florida or California, the same main piece of advice is applicable to all – research, plan, research, plan, research and plan, and repeat x 100. You really do need to do a lot of research and planning to make sure you get the right holiday for you. Which one you choose is down to personal preference but one thing I will say is that there is a reason why most UK families choose Disney in Florida – the weather, the space and the fact that you can have a full holiday and take in other attractions such as Universal Studios as well. Similarly, with Disneyland California, it’s an easy to fit into a family holiday especially for older children or diverse age groups. You can do an awful lot more than just go to Disneyland. But maybe you prefer somewhere more local – you don’t like long haul, or you only have a short break in mind - then if you live in the UK, you’ve decided Disneyland Paris is your only option.  

Aside from the “Research & Plan” advice on repeat, the first piece of advice I would give is to book with Disney direct. Now I know this goes against a lot of advice out there when booking holidays, but I do believe that NO-ONE will give you the service or the expertise that Disney themselves do. The issue I have is that so many of the “Disneyland Paris experts” out there are the sort of independent travel agents that are just two-man bands; and whilst they may have been 20 times themselves, they will have been on “their” holiday which will not necessarily be the holiday you want. Sadly, they only know their holiday so if your requirements are very different, that may not be fully appreciated, and they may well think they know best and advise or book accordingly. Now given their often very very limited travel experience, they will not know everything even about somewhere as small as the Disneyland Paris resort.  I know there are exceptions to this and your local one maybe that exception but if you do decide to use them and not Disney, ask a lot of questions of when they have been, how they went and what they did and stayed. Just so you get a feel of what they have experienced and what they can offer. We booked with supposedly one of the best (message me direct and I’ll let you know who to avoid) and this advice comes from having an awful holiday because of their limited experience. Why did they fail? Well they failed abysmally mainly due to the complete lack of advice on what “extras” we needed to book, what we should expect regarding meals and what is the best way to “do” Disney. All advice that should have been available to us when booking and before we went; so I am hoping with this post, I can give some of the advice that we think would be useful.

The second piece of advice is to ask yourself, “Do we need to stay onsite at Disneyland Paris?” Would you actually prefer to stay in Paris and commute in? The reason for asking is that, in our opinion, there is better food and better hotels in Paris. If you’re Disney mad and want the full Disney experience, then stay onsite – there are some good deals to be had with fast passes for rides, breakfast or other bits included. However, we found both the main Disney hotel (at the entrance to the park) and Newport Bay hotel to be tired and dated. They need a revamp. We stayed at Newport Bay Hotel and we had a Compass Club family room. It was supposedly one of the best rooms aside from a suite but I can honestly sum it up as tired, dated, and above all else small – it just fitted 2 double beds in it. We’ve stayed at bigger family rooms in a Premier Inn. So bear this in mind. Also, the food in the hotels wasn’t great quality but exceptionally expensive. We ended up eating in the park or Disney village – better quality and less pricey.

Which brings us onto the third main piece of advice, and that is to think hard about meals and your plans for each day. Meal Plans are a good option because they do give you discounted meals, but you need to ensure the restaurants have menus you want to eat and that they are open when you want to eat. If you do go down this route, make sure you book the number of meals you want for the time you are there. Sounds obvious but you may be there on days where lunch isn’t available (its not available in the hotel buffet at lunchtimes, for instance) or even dinner (especially during the Christmas/New Year Holiday period). Also, look at your travel times – you may arrive after lunch on your first day or need to leave before lunch on your departure day. Don’t be caught out – instead of listening to experts, do your own research and ask the questions.

The final piece of advice, and probably one of the most important, is to look at when you are going. There is an urban myth that a lot of the “experts” like to put out around about the Christmas/New Year holiday period. They will tell you that the local French people who have annual passes are busy at home with their families from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day, making this the quietest time of the year to go. This is a LIE. I still recall the shocked laugh and look of disbelief from the Compass Club concierge when I told them what we had been told (enough for them to want to make a note of the so called “DLP experts” who had sold us this lie). As she calmly corrected, Christmas Eve to Boxing Day are some of their 3 busiest days of the year as is New Year’s Eve and New Year’s day. They had the stats to show me. When I say busy, I mean 45-minute queues minimum for any ride. Not great for adults; a complete torture for kids of any age. Their quiet time during the holiday period, if you do want to go at this time? 27th – 29th December, or whenever there is no general holiday for everyone as bank holidays do move depending on when Christmas falls. Similarly, for the rest of the year – if you want the best experience, go out of season or out of French school holidays.

This leads nicely back to “do you need to stay onsite?”. Quite obviously the majority of those in DLP are French, and they don’t stay onsite. Instead they commute in which is remarkably easy from Paris and the train stop is so close to the entrance to the park. It’s a 10-minute walk closer than any of the hotels unless you’re at the Disney hotel which is above the noisy entrance to the park. There is a supposed magic to staying onsite – you can arrange for character meet and greets at the hotels – but they are a 15-minute walk (with kids) through the Disney village to the park. Just bear this in mind when you are planning.

What else do you need to know?

1.       Its quieter if you’re in the Park from 7pm onwards – especially the rides for smaller kids such as Dumbo or the Teacups. Not great for their bedtime routine but if you do find it busy, it’s worth the sacrifice.

2.       Use the Disney staff for advice whilst you’re there too– they saved our holiday and understandably are the real experts.

3.       Book your meals before you go, and research all your options. The restaurants do get booked up.

4.       If you are travelling with a child with ASD, however minor, again talk to Disney. They understand ASD and the issues you may have and will have suggestions as to help. We wish we’d done this, but the lack of awareness we’d experienced at other tourist sites meant we didn’t think there would be measures in place. We were so wrong and wish we’d flagged it earlier rather than trying to manage the situation ourselves as we usually do. Thankfully Disney came to the rescue when we were struggling whilst we were there and for that we will always be eternally grateful (see pt 2)

5.       Look into the experiences that you pay extra for and work out whether it’s something you’d want to do. They get booked up well in advance and its important you do your research depending on what you want.

6.       Parades. For the 5pm parade, we found the best place was as you first walk into Market Street, by the Disney train. At that time, most people are in the main body of the park and so those bits of the parade route get easily clogged up. If you’re by the exit/entrance, there are less people there and you can get a front row spot easily just 15 minutes before it starts. Also, stand on a bend – they have to slow down for bends for you get a longer view.

7.       Work our whether you need to stay up for the Fireworks. You’ll see better displays on the TV at NYE, and its mainly just a light projection of a mashup of Disney films with the songs – sung in French mainly. Decide if it’s worth a crotchety kid the next day for staying up so late.

8.       We found the rides closed at 9pm – an hour before the fireworks at 10pm. It may have just been they did this during the winter but just something to be aware of.

9.       If you want a meal in your Disney hotel on Christmas Eve dinner or Christmas Day lunch, be prepared to pay for it. There are no meal plans for these 2 meals and the price for a family of 2 adults and 1 child was 452Euros per meal. Disney will push this option but there are other restaurants open during this period that you can use if you’d prefer – the set meals at the hotels are not the only option.

10.   Disneyland Paris site is quite small. Whilst you will spend a lot of time queuing, actually walking around the site won’t take you very long – we did a recce in about an hour with our 5-year-old. Take this into account when planning how long to spend there. We had 3 full days there (and we stayed onsite) and it was far too long. Two days would be enough and actually we’d have been happy having a day trip from Paris, although it would be a long day.

So I’ll end the advice as I started…..Plan, Plan, Plan, Plan, Plan, Plan. DO YOUR RESEARCH and be honest on what you want from the holiday. Go into detail - what rides you want to do, where you are going to eat; plan to take snacks with you and bottle of drink (one bottle of cordial and one bottle for water is a good idea as there are good water fountains to refil around the site); take varied clothing and layers for your time in the park especially if you’ll be there all day (and foldaway rainy gear if needed). It may all seem like an awfully lot of hard work but you will benefit and you’re less likely to feel like you’ve faced an endurance test.

Regardless of which Denver parking lot you choose to park with, it should always be noted that you are not allowed to park for more than 72 hours in one spot. Denver has a street parking rule that prohibits any parking at a single spot for a maximum duration of 72 hours. You can only park at a place (restricted or unrestricted) for 72 hours, even if there is no signboard stating a limit for parking. If you fail to follow this rule, you can get expensive Denver parking tickets or even get your car towed away without warning.

Denver also has a color-coded parking system in effect with different restrictions marked by different colored curbs. Red Curbs: Red curbs are no parking zones where you are not legally allowed to park under most circumstances. In most scenarios, red curbs indicate that there’s a fire hydrant or bus stop nearby, and you are not allowed to park over there.  

Denver Parking Tickets are Expensive  

If you plan to travel across Denver on budget, it is essential that you do not end up at the receiving end of a Denver parking ticket. Street parking in Denver is probably your cheapest bet, but it is not always the cheapest option at hand. You can always access plenty of alternative Denver parking spaces on websites like Way.com that lets you park for rates as low as $5 per hour. However, street parking Denver spaces offer even cheaper deals. Still, if you end up running out the meter, you can be ticketed with an expensive Denver parking ticket and end up losing more money than you save by going for street parking over Denver parking garages

While these are some of the leading general rules to keep in mind for Denver parking, there are also many other rules and regulations that need to be followed if you don’t want to end up with an expensive Denver parking ticket. For instance, you are not allowed to park in a crosswalk, intersection, sidewalk, or in a way that blocks a sidewalk or driveway. You are also not allowed to go for Denver parking within 10 – 15 feet of a fire hydrant. When going for on-street parking, you are supposed to leave a distance of at least 2 feet between your vehicle and the closest parked vehicle. You are also supposed to maintain a minimum distance of at least 18 inches from the curb.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, A Very Special Place. Kanab Utah

       Anyone who has been to Kanab in southern Utah can tell you this is a special place. But there is a special place within this special place I want to tell you about.

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

This is the largest no-kill animal sanctuary in the country. They have other locations throughout the USA in New York, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, Houston, and Atlanta, but Kanab is their headquarters. Not only is it huge, over 3,700 acres and they have over 1500 animals to care for each day, but, they can change your life as well. Volunteering at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary is a bucket list item for many of our guests.

Everyday folks from all over the country (and the world) volunteer at Best Friends. And you can too. There are two shifts every day of the year, shift times are 8:15-11:30 a.m. and 1:15-4:00 p.m. You need to sign up early though as each animal area has a maximum number of volunteers it can accommodate during each shift. 

Wanna Come? 

The website for Best Friends   https://bestfriends.org    is super streamlined and very easy to navigate. You can set up your own volunteer schedule there. That gives you the flexibility to volunteer at the sanctuary and still have time to visit our beautiful National Parks. During the high Spring Break, summer season and holidays it gets super busy. So signing up as early as possible is important. Some slots book out months in advance. But if you are just passing through for a couple of days, don't despair even if the shifts are all full, you can contact the Volunteer Center and ask about other opportunities such as helping out in their gift shop or Angels Rest and other special service projects like landscaping and maintenance.

What Will I Find There?

Two shifts every day in seven different animal areas; Cat World, Bunny House, Parrot Garden, Dogtown, Piggy Paradise, Horse Haven, and Wild Friends. Opportunities in each of these categories are limited so it is highly recommended that you sign up and schedule your shifts as far in advance as possible!

A nice bonus is the two places to eat at the sanctuary. The Canyon Grill it is open during the summer months but their $5 vegetarian buffet it is served year-round daily from 11:30 AM to 1 PM.

When you arrive at the sanctuary you will have a 10-minute check-in at their Welcome Center. You will be provided with a name badge, your schedule and anything else you need to know to make your volunteer time the best that it can be!

What To Wear

They do ask that all volunteers wear closed toed shoes, even slip-on clog type shoes must have a heel strap. You could be climbing a ladder or walking animals and they are concerned about everyone's safety. They also strongly recommend long pants when working with the horses or pigs (but please, not the same ones you have worn around horses and sheep at home).

Shall I Bring My Own Pet?

Many of our favorite guests at My Star Vacation Rentals are Best Friend volunteers! Of course, these animal lovers all have their own pets at home. As our home is pet-friendly many want to bring their own pet with them to Kanab. Just a couple of things to be aware of though, your own pets are not allowed in any of the animal areas at the sanctuary. Pets are also not allowed in the National Parks. Both are a couple of good reasons to consider leaving your own pet at home.

Sleepovers

But probably the best reason to leave your own pet relaxing at home is that some of the dogs, cats, and bunnies at the sanctuary are approved to go home with the volunteers for an overnight visit! If you have volunteered at least one shift in that specific animal area you can bring a pet home for the night. How fun is that? We have hosted many sleepover pets at The Western Star and hear nothing but amazing responses from our guests about that great experience.

Can I Bring My Kids?

While you may not want to bring your own pet to Best Friends you will definitely want to bring your kids that are six years old and over!  They must be accompanied by an adult but one adult can supervise up to three minors. For safety considerations, each animal area has its own minimum age requirements:

Cat World = 6+ Bunny House = 6+ Parrot Garden = 8+ Dogtown = 10+ Piggy Paradise = 12+ Horse Haven = 12+ Wild Friends = 18+ Please keep in mind that these age restrictions apply to sleepovers as well. So for instance, You cannot come and volunteer with the doggies and the take home a sleepover if your kids are less than 10 yrs old, but they could get a cat or a bunny.

I have a couple of friends come with their daughters and love sharing that experience. One comes every year as a special mom and daughter project. One came with her daughter and even adopted a bird to take home!

This is Christian, we call her "The Bird Whisperer".  She puts doll clothes on her chickens and she LOVES her bird they brought home from Best Friends.

I talked with several employees in prepping for this post and they did stress that this is a working sanctuary, not a Petting Zoo for tiny kids!

Huntington Hartford Theater is Where My Life Changed

They were credited with changing the methods of creating animation. The most famous was “The Flintstones”. So many successful producers attended shows at the Greek that I could go on forever.

My time at the Greek was an incredible learning experience but nothing compared to my experiences at the Huntington Hartford Theater. It was where I learned everything that changed my life. The Huntington Hartford only did plays and had an incredible season every year. First, the woman who was in charge of season ticket holders was Countess Florencia Falzone. She was an incredible woman, who had 6 children, probably from several different men (with the likely exception of the Count). She had many admirers and was always receiving gifts from them of incredible value. One of the largest diamond rings I ever saw was given to her as a friendship ring with no strings attached. I mention all this because she was considered royalty in Beverly Hills and managed to bring in many very prominent season ticket holders for the theatre. I got to know her quite well, I remember when I couldn’t afford to get a television. She told me she had a couple of large televisions in her garage and I was welcome to them. I thanked her and rushed to go get one which worked beautifully. Another thing she did for me was hiring my wife as her assistant in the Season Ticket Department at the theatre. Of course, this was with the blessings of Mr. Doolittle. The hiring of my wife helped us meet our living expenses. Our life at this point was making many massive changes for the good. It started when one of my fellow classmates at the Pasadena Playhouse, Sally Struthers, got a recurring role on the Smothers Brothers show and she ultimately started dating Tommy Smothers.

The reason this helped my wife and I was the fact that Tommy Smothers decided to produce the musical “Hair” at the Aquarius Theatre in Hollywood. I can’t remember what the deal was, but my wife got loaned to the theatre to work with their opening night and celebrity ticket sales. This was all possible because of my on-again / off-again relationship with Sally. Also, we got to meet Tommy Smothers several times, as well as Jim Rado & Gerome Ragni who wrote the music and the show. We also got to spend some time with the cast. My wife moved over to the theatre and worked directly with Harry Blackstone who was, at the time, the General Manager of the Aquarius. But the thing I remember the most was the after-party, which we attended with Josie Pollack, the booking agent for the Greek Theatre. I got to know Josie quite well and we became fast friends. Josie knew everybody who was anybody in Hollywood and was close friends with them. I have many other stories of the time I spent in her company. The party was phenomenal!

The producers had put up a massive tent in what was originally the parking lot. It was what I saw that night that gave me a sense of what a themed event could be, and the memory of the event set me up for what I wanted to do later in my life. Everybody who was anybody in Hollywood was there. The list of celebrities was endless. I remember the night to this day. The food and beverages were first class, the seafood, the specialty food stations were numerous, caviar, fillets and just about everything you could want. It also had at least 12 open bars and a staff of 24 minimum passing hors d’ oeuvres. They must also have poured 1000 bottles of champagne.

That night, my wife and I within the company of Josie Pollack, met many stars and producers. The one I remember the most was Liberace. I spent most of the time being chased around the event by him and no matter how much I tried to explain that was not into that kind of behavior, he just wouldn’t give up. He finally did, however, give up. Other than that, he was really quite nice to my wife and I. I later found out that he went to Josie Pollack and got my wife and I’s birthdays, Anniversary and address. With this information, he would always send my wife and I a present on our birthdays, anniversaries and at Christmas time. He also would send me five first row tickets to his performances in Las Vegas. We got these presents every year until he passed away. I was told that he literally did this for almost 1000 people he had met over the years.

Once we had attended the show and went back to the Greek and Huntington Hartford my wife did stay on, however, in the ticket department at the Aquarius as the Countess left the theatre and hired a new woman to run the Season Sales Department. She turned out to be great, and we got to know her and her husband quite well. As I mentioned before, my wife would suffer from depression and the new woman was a Christian Scientist and did her best to convert her to the faith, which seemed to help her a lot. It didn’t necessarily help me, as I never endorsed the faith, but we didn’t have any children so I didn’t object to her involvement.

Things really started happening for me at the Greek & Hartford (mostly the Hartford). I was getting some incredible opportunities there. First, I had the opportunity to meet Gregory Peck and his wife and one night at the theatre he invited me to join him and his wife for dinner across the street at the Brown Derby. There was another couple invited as well but I don’t remember their names. I do remember them as being quite nice. The evening was as memorable as I was star struck and he was one of my favorite actors of all time. Also, back then if my wife drank wine it would be fortified and cost a couple of dollars a gallon, This night, however, will remain in my mind forever as Mr. Peck ordered two bottles of wine that cost almost $1,500.00 a bottle. They had a Sommelier come to the table and decant the wine and serve it to us. I must admit I absolutely hated it, it tasted moldy to me. Of course, we just had no pallet for the wine of that vintage and quality. It took years for me to develop a taste for good vintages and, for that matter, spend more than $10.00 for a bottle of wine. Today, however, it’s a bit different. But I will always remember that evening,

Another evening I will never forget was when Josie Pollack decided to go out for a couple of drinks after a show and ended up at Daisies (which was a bar that a lot of celebrities went to after they did their live shows). We came into the place and got a high top table and settled in as Josie went off to say hello to some of her friends. At some point, she came back and we were just sitting there talking when Sammy Davis Jr. Came to the table to say hello to Josie and took a seat. I have to say he was a lot shorter than I could imagine. Josie introduced me and we all engaged in conversation. We had been talking for about 15 minutes when all of a sudden, up comes Johnny Carson to say hello to Josie and Sammy Davis. We sat around talking about our day when Johnny Carson asked if anybody was hungry. We all agreed that we could have a bite, so Johnny he could get a limo from the studio and we could head over to Chasen’s (famous for its Chili) for dinner. The limo arrived and off we went to the restaurant. When we got there, we were refused admission as we did not have a coat and tie. I couldn’t believe it, it was Johnny Carson and Sammy Davis Jr. and they wouldn’t admit us without a coat and tie. We started to leave when Johnny Carson held back and he said let’s all get back in the limo. He had a suite at the Sheraton so we all went to his suite and he then distributed ties, and sports jackets to me and Sammy Davis which was hilarious. When he got into one of Johnny’s jackets (wasn’t all that bad as Johnny was a very short man as well). I, however, looked ridiculous. Johnny removed his shirt as the restaurant hadn’t said anything about having to have a shirt. Back we went and the restaurant had to let us in as we were wearing coats and ties. That was a hoot.

Had another interesting evening of fun when my wife and I went to the Beverly Wilshure Hotel for dinner and were sitting in the lobby waiting for some friends to join us. A Frairs Club Dinner was going on in one of the ballrooms at the time. At some point, Don Rickles and Redd Fox came out of the ballroom and into the lobby and Rickles started doing his act with all of us in the lobby. Fortunately for us, Sydney Poitier came into the lobby and Rickles started in on him. It was hilarious. Sydney could not stop laughing. Rickles told him that if he hadn’t become an actor he would have ended up as a naked druggist from the Bronx. You had to be there. It was an evening that no one in that lobby will ever forget.

My grandmother is 70 years of age, drives a 2004 (54) 1.2l Vauxhall Corsa for personal reasons only - no commuting, work etc. Tesco car insurance have quoted 350 for fully comprehensive cover for 12 months. This seems a little steep as my father's 2004 RX8 which is classed as a 2.3l, or thereabouts, costs less than 300 & he's considerably younger. Each have full no claims bonuses. Please don't refer me to comparison sites because I'm sick of entering the necessary details only to receive ridiculously high quotes from them all. Thanks!""

Happy Presidents’ Day! Or is it President’s Day? Or Presidents Day? What you call the national holiday depends on where you are, who you’re honoring, and how you think we’re celebrating.

Saying “President’s Day” infers that the day belongs to a singular president, such as George Washington or Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays are the basis for the holiday. On the other hand, referring to it as “Presidents’ Day” means that the day belongs to all of the presidents—that it’s their day collectively. Finally, calling the day “Presidents Day”—plural with no apostrophe—would indicate that we’re honoring all POTUSes past and present (yes, even Andrew Johnson), but that no one president actually owns the day.

You would think that in the nearly 140 years since “Washington’s Birthday” was declared a holiday in 1879, someone would have officially declared a way to spell the day. But in fact, even the White House itself hasn’t chosen a single variation for its style guide. They spelled it “President’s Day” here and “Presidents’ Day” here.

Maybe that indecision comes from the fact that Presidents Day isn’t even a federal holiday. The federal holiday is technically still called “Washington’s Birthday,” and states can choose to call it whatever they want. Some states, like Iowa, don’t officially acknowledge the day at all. And the location of the punctuation mark is a moot point when individual states choose to call it something else entirely, like “George Washington’s Birthday and Daisy Gatson Bates Day” in Arkansas, or “Birthdays of George Washington/Thomas Jefferson” in Alabama. (Alabama loves to split birthday celebrations, by the way; the third Monday in January celebrates both Martin Luther King, Jr., and Robert E. Lee.)

You can look to official grammar sources to declare the right way, but even they don’t agree. The AP Stylebook prefers “Presidents Day,” while Chicago Style uses “Presidents’ Day.”

The bottom line: There’s no rhyme or reason to any of it. Go with what feels right. And even then, if you’re in one of those states that has chosen to spell it “President’s Day”—Washington, for example—and you use one of the grammar book stylings instead, you’re still technically wrong.

Given that the skiers can fly up to 60 feet in the air and come down on a 37-degree grade, it seems like just going out and trying a new trick would be a good way to break your neck. That’s why you’ll need one unexpected piece of equipment if you want to start training for aerials: a towel.

Instead of perfecting their flips and twists over the snow, aerial skiers try out their new maneuvers on ramps that launch them over huge swimming pools. The U.S. national team has facilities in Park City, Utah and Lake Placid, New York that include specially designed pools to help competitors perfect their next big moves. Still, it’s this very sort of risk-taking that has brought her to the top of her game, and caused friction with more than one of her past coaches.

“Why win with less when you can win with more?” Caldwell said of her competition mentality. “I don’t want to go out there and show the world my easiest trick. I want to show the world my best trick, me putting everything on the line to be the best.”

So, for example, you don’t consciously know how to control your muscles in order to walk —in all likelihood, you wouldn’t know where to begin—but your zombie agents do, and they’ll take you wherever you want to go, dodging curbs and puppies, and “waking you” when appropriate to decide which babies to stop and kiss.

Zombie agents can be rather startling things. When you suddenly become aware that you’ve driven halfway across town in the direction of the office instead of going to the shoe store Saturday morning, you have zombie agents to thank. You “wake” as if from slumber, and with the frightening realization that you’ve been flying down the highway at prodigious speed while your mind was on other things. You feel as if you’ve been asleep, and in a way you have—but a very funny kind of sleep in which it is only the uppermost layer of abstract reason that is disassociated from the rest of conscious experience. Your zombie agents have been driving to work, responding to traffic, adjusting the radio, noting the check engine light, all the things you think of as “you, driving the car,” except the big one: deciding where to go. That part was on automatic pilot (which is another good way to think of this).

This is at the advanced end of the spectrum. Typing your friend’s phone number using “muscle memory” is at the other, but it’s the same phenomenon.

We didn’t evolve to remember phone numbers, so we aren’t very good at it. In fact, we are so bad at it, we invent all sorts of mnemonic devices (memory aids) to help us [in] relating numbers to words or spacial memory, either of which are closer to the hunting and gathering we are evolved for. The illusion of “muscle memory” arises because we are supremely well adapted to manual manipulation and tool-making. We don’t need to invent a memory aid to help us remember what we do with our hands, we only have to practice.

So the conscious mind says “dial Tabby’s number,” and our fingers—or more correctly, the zombie agent which learned that task—do it. Similarly, after sufficient training, we can do the same thing with tasks like “play a major fifth,” “drive to work,” or “pull an Airbus A380 up for a go-around.”

It feels like muscle memory because the conscious mind—the part you experience as being you—is acting like a coach driver, steering the efforts of a team of zombie agents, all harnesses to collective action. But it isn’t muscle memory, it’s just memory—though it may be stored (or at least some of it) in the deeper, motor cortex parts of the brain.
