Mobile App Tips for Adventure Hiking Trails
Adventure Hiking Trails may parallel roads in some cases. The Adventure Trail Paths are shown in ORANGE.
“This map and directions are intended for general reference use only.  Always check local road and weather conditions. Stay on designated roads.  Dirt roads are impassable when wet. Please respect Private Property. Be prepared for a wilderness experience: Always bring extra water, food, sunscreen, and supplies. Do not remove artifacts or deface the ‘rock art’.  Leave no trace of your visit so others may enjoy.”
Cell phone service is non-existent in most areas.  Essential information is available offline for the Adventure Trails and Outdoor Recreational Opportunities on this app. In areas without cellular service map tiles may not be displayed.  You can go to "Settings" and toggle on topographic maps to assist with navigation.
Safety:  Enjoy your trip –by being prepared.  Due to cell phone battery limitations, we always advise visitors to bring charging cords or battery packs and have access to hard copy maps as a backup.
About Adventure Trail Featured Paths & Content:   The Kane County Commission invites you to use the Kanab Trails App.  You can plan your excursions and follow the route on your mobile device while on location.
These trails are meant to serve as guides for your Kane County Adventure with both map and satellite view options.  Each Adventure Trail is its own category that lists the trail path(s) its trailhead and destination. Some Trails show highway access points.   If you have downloaded the app to your device and then enter an area with no cell coverage, the essential paths, and points of interest are still available offline.
Adventure Hiking Trail Experience:  Many of the Adventure Trails follow roads for a portion of the way.  You will see which type of road is running alongside, and when the road ends the hiking routes begins.

Stopping for a break in southern Utah at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. If I haven’t bragged on #nationalparks lately, allow me to do so now. I mean, wow. These are the most beautiful and rare places on earth, and they’re preserved just for you and I to enjoy. Old #WesternRuins still dot the #SouthwestUtah landscape from the days of the #WildWest and I know some of these locations that I take visitors to on my Area 51 Wild West tours out to Southern Nevada. Most of what’s left of the #19thcentury is no longer with us because the old ghost towns have been vandalized and plundered by treasure hunters. Even the federal government is guilty of leveling some of this western heritage. It’s a sad state of affairs. There are still some remnants the past though! We did a lot of work to our Tacoma to get it ready for 400 miles off road. We want to thank everyone who helped us get ready. #valleyhybrids for installing the rear Harrop E-Locker from Terrain Tamer and 4.88 @nitrogearaxle @4x4spod for rewiring all our accessories. #flexpointoffroad for installing and our @allterrainconcepts lights. @budbuilt for getting our skid plates sent out in time. @treadwright tires for keeping us rolling. @stealth_custom_series for shipping us a last minute wheel lock key that we lost... and @billstayner for helping finish the manual hub conversion. The truck did great but does have a few new noises lol #whatisthatnoise #overlanding #overlandingaf #slickrock #drift #ondirt #southwestutah #subscribe #4wdtoyotaowner #1stgen http://ift.tt/2q3w9fC http://ift.tt/2pdgPJc

Hiking through Kanarra Canyon in southwest Utah. It was a goal of our trip to hike a slot canyon, and we were all SO excited with how beautiful this one is. The water was freezing cold (there were snow drifts in parts of the canyon) but frozen feet were very worth it for the adventure.

A Must-Do Excursion in Kanab, Utah
Tumblr media
A Must-Do tour in Kanab. Cutler Point and The Great Chamber
Wowzers! Photo Op extraordinaire.
Awesome jeep tour with my favorite photo spot yet! You will love this tour just a little North-East of Kanab.
Cutler Point and The Great Chamber
There are so many cool places around Kanab and I haven’t even heard of a lot of them. Cutler Point is one of those. Jeff and Julie Jensen from Coral Cliff Tours took us out for a quick morning Jeep tour to this easy attraction. Cutler Point is a large promontory in the White Cliffs level of The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. #HiddenGem  So dramatic and impressive! but wait….
Tumblr media
Cutler point near Kanab Utah
We parked at the base of this giant, then just a short, full sun, quarter-mile walk from the Jeep (kinda steep, sandy, rocky, near the end), and we were at the Great Chamber in Cutler Point. I just couldn’t say “Wow” enough times. This huge alcove has one GIANT sand dune in the middle. By standing in the back of the alcove and shooting up to the top of the dune, you will get amazing photos. Our self made “Petroglyph people” were my favorites.
Tumblr media
Great photos inside and out
Tumblr media
From the base of Cutler Point looking West
The Great Chamber is amazing, but it is not the only thing. A great view of the valley kept me mesmerized as the clouds rolled by and made the panorama below us constantly evolve. Sunbeams spotlighted the Red Butte to the West and Johnson Canyon to the East. The scale of this landscape is simply remarkable. Making it a true gem and a challenge for photographers. Don’t forget your wide-angle lens if ya got em’.
Tumblr media
I call this a Must-do excursion for a couple of reasons - - Fairly quick and easy, we were out and back within 2 hours. - Instagram Envy worthy photos - The scope of the landscape! - And it certainly didn’t hurt that we did this tour on a beautiful spring morning when the wildflowers were out.
Beware
Tumblr media
Don’t EVEN think about doing this in your own vehicle! Deep sand and way too many side roads to keep track of. Getting stuck in this outback area could turn dangerous quickly. Plus Jeff and Julie know how to take just the right photos of your group. So don't think twice, get a guide on this one guys.
Also - Do not plan on doing this in the middle of a hot summer day. Temps can be brutal and you will not enjoy this so much. But don’t forget the Southern Utah mantra - no matter when you go - plenty of Water and Sunscreen folks!
You can reach Coral Cliff Tours here: https://cctoursandtownhomes.com/
These folks are also my recommendation for Peekaboo Slot canyon. See my blog post on Peekaboo #CoolTour #Cutler Point #GreatChamber

Book Direct Education Day
Tumblr media
Travelers take notice -
I have written quite a bit about #Bookdirect because I am passionate about it! I love a good deal and I love sharing with other travelers how to get a good deal! Booking Direct is a good deal all the way around.
What is #BookDirect?
Book Direct is simply cutting out the middlemen fees when booking accommodations for your business trip or vacation. No Vrbo/Homeaway, Airbnb, Booking.com, etc. Just book direct with the owner or manager. Simple.
You, the guest, save money when you Book Direct
The Hospitality Owner saves money
You get better, local (not overseas) customer service
The Owner gets better information
You get personalized ideas and help with your vacation, plus support local businesses.
The Owners get to share their pride in their community with visitors
Tumblr media
Help me find a “Book Direct” property.
Look for LOCAL area rental sites. Search for “whatever my destination is”, “vacation rentals” or “Book direct”. Scroll down past the OTA paid ads.
Search on fee-free sites such as VacationSoup.com or Houfy.com
Find a place you like on an OTA, then search the name of the property or owner in search engines and social media. Do an image search. Savvy owners can leave you clues, but direct info is banned from the listing sites. (I had a guest recently follow my breadcrumbs to my website and saved $500 on her family’s stay!)
Search Local area Tourist information sites
Search for Facebook groups dedicated to vacation rentals by owners, fee-free or VRBO/Airbnb alternatives. There are quite a few.
I have a small list of other trusted great owners from around the world. Might spark your next great adventure! https://mystarvr.com/stays-around-the-world/and the #BookDirect Map

Fascinating Dinosaur Country
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Who doesn't love Dinosaurs!? Utah has plenty of Dinosaur history sites to explore but don't miss this great little museum just off Highway 89A on your way to Lake Powell. 57 miles from Kanab and just 13 miles from Lake Powell. The Big Water visitor center is one of four visitor centers in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. Each visitor center has a different theme, and Big Water is all about the Big Guys!
Paleontology and Geology explained
Tumblr media
You will see:
Vibrant 30' mural depicting Late Cretaceous Period
Real dinosaur fossils on display
Topography relief model of the Monument
Plus get current weather reports, road conditions, and trail updates
Tumblr media
You will not need a lot of time here, but worth the stop. The Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument is a big place but we found this little gem fascinating. Their book/gift store has a good collection of field guides and souvenirs. Check out the official GSENM website here: https://www.blm.gov/visit/big-water-visitor-center
Tumblr media
Utah's Dinosaur History
With fossil records of more dinosaur species than any other state and the most complete record of prehistoric life than any other geographic area on the planet, Utah offers one of the world's largest collections of mounted dinosaur skeletons at over a dozen different museums and actual discovery sites. Dinosaurs should be our state animal.....
Other things to see in the area
You can find other cool (non-dino) recommendations for things to see and do in our Kanab area local guide: https://mystarvr.com/what-to-see-and-do-and-eat-and-where-to-stay-southern-utah-2/
