Under the Queen's Umbrella

This is a beautiful series. I smiled, laughed and cried. This is the story of a mother who loves her children and will fight to the teeth to protect them. As a mother myself, I could understand her feelings and her actions. Queen Im Hwa Ryeong is an intelligent woman, street smart, and she has learned to play the politics game to protect her five sons. He eldest, the Crown Prince and his own wife, little boy and his youngest on the way are her pride and joy. He is the model child everyone would want to have. She worries about his health.

When the king decides to look for a substitute for the Crown Prince's assistant, the Queen will have to prepare her other four carefree sons so they can show they are just as worthy as their other half-brothers. But as she tries to do so without alarming them, she runs around inside and outside the palace looking for them.

Her second son, Grand Prince Seong Nam, was taken away from her when he was born. She was able to bring him home after years of living outside like a commoner. He feels like an outsider inside the palace and likes to train outside, but he loves his brothers, and cherishes his relationship with his older brother.

Grand Prince Muan is a young man in love with a woman of low birth. His mother is constantly getting him out of her home and bring him back to the palace.

Grand Prince Kye Seong is a quiet young man who brings peace to his mother but carries a secret that could kill him.

Grand Prince Il Young is in his early teens and too young to care about politics.

As the political intrigues unravel, we see her relationship with her sons strengthen. This a woman who will protect, not only her children, but the king's other sons. . . She is strong and flexible, accepting and a problem solver.

I liked her relationship with her sons. How she interacts with each and gives them the support they need while also giving them wings. I also like her relationship with the King. Out of all his wives, the audience can see a special bond between them. He values her opinion and respects her. She respects him, although there are things she will always keep away from him in order to protect her sons. She is indeed her son's secret keeper and their support.

I really love what the title symbolizes. The umbrella she puts over her boys' heads when it rains and what it all means.

I truly love this story!

Synopsis

This KDrama was aired on October 15 of 2022, going for 16 episodes.This drama is set on a fictional Joseon dynasty, with a strong queen who would give up all protocols as she struggles to make her trouble making sons into princes.

Opinion

This is a very good series, I binge watched it in a few days. I loved the queen! How strong, resourceful, and independent she was. I loved all the characters, especially the queen and prince Seongnam. I also loved how the king was very supportive of her. The series had a lot of different topics, from motherhood to sexuality. It's a drama series. There are no gore or sex scenes. I recommend this series to anyone who likes history dramas.

Saimdang, Episode 1

First off - it’s obviously been a while since I last watched an SBS show, because that little jingle at the start took me by surprise. DANG DA TING DA DANG DANG!

Let’s talk characters:

I can already tell I’m going to hate this man.

And this one. (okay, he sort of takes a first step toward redeeming himself later in the episode when he bothers to leave her some money, but it’s a very tiny step in a very long journey, so I’m not holding my breath.)

Who is this then? She doesn’t like Professor Min, but does that make her a good guy or just a different variety of bad guy? Or is she having an affair with him and being a spy what goes on with her boss, Healer Hacker Ahjumma?

Healer ahjumma is the best, so I’m on her side until given reason to believe otherwise. I want to believe that she’s is on the side of Art and Truth, and not sleazy asshole professorism.

Speaking of which...

While I’m not 100% sold on this show so far, I have to say, I appreciate the take on politics in academia. Anyone who doesn’t work in research or universities doesn’t even think about it, but it’s such a big issue and has major repercussions in the ‘real world’, so to see it getting some limelight is nice.

Alright, back to characters:

If this episode is anything to go by, Kim Hae Sook actually doesn’t have a very large role, which makes me sad, because she’s amazing. I do want to see their relationship develop though, they seem to genuinely like each other in spite of the pressure she seems to put on Ji Yoon and the way Ji Yoon is a bit resentful of her obsession with her son’s studies. 

I imagine the way Ji Yoon’s husband has left them in the lurch will bring these two closer together, especially if she turns to proving Professor Min wrong as a way to get ahead, and her mother in law digs in to help her do it. 

Exactly! I’m so glad our girl is sensible. I did so want to like her.

... or not. I’m sure you’re a great friend, Hye Jung, but that is just terrible advice. What she needs to do right now is whack her deadbeat husband upside the head, which I know she’s damn well capable of, given the short insight we got to their married life.

Although, as far as ridiculous logic in the interests of furthering plot development goes, that really wasn’t the dumbest thing to happen this episode. No, that honor definitely goes to the Italian caretaker man who takes no pride in his job:

NO IT’S NOT FATE IT’S YOU NOT DOING YOUR JOB! You don’t just GIVE THINGS AWAY omg. 

I legitimately was so frustrated by this. I’m getting worked up just recapping it. Holy shit. Ugh. UGH.

Soooo.... basically, what I’ve taken away from the first episode is that Ji Yoon will discover that this painting wasn’t in fact painted by this famous dude everyone is assuming it was painted by, but actually by the lady that the famous dude was making a painting of in his very haunted state in that creepy ass European castle. Which is now manned by a completely incompetent but excessively flirtatious elderly Italian man. And then she’ll use that knowledge to take down a sleazy creep of an Art History professor who’s only interested in getting ahead in the world.

And really, if that’s how the drama had been marketed to me in the first place, I would probably have been just as excited to watch it. So I guess this is me getting ready to watch episode 2!!

The track “Universe” is a rock ballad that talks about how one would go to the ends of the universe to find a lover who’s become their entire world. Imagery of two people who are inescapably tied together echoes throughout the music video, in reference to the song’s lyrics.

The album includes both a Korean and Chinese version of the title track. It also features five other new tracks: “Lights Out,” a pop ballad with lyrics written by Chen; “Good Night,” a retro-sounding pop ballad; “Been Through,” a pop track that draws upon rock influences; “Stay,” a pop-soul track; and “Fall,” an R&B track.

Short

Short is a 4 episode mini series about two members of an ice skating race team. Kang Ho Young is an amateur racer and is encouraged to join a university's team where he joins Maeng Man Bok (his best friend) and the star of the team, Park Eun Ho. It's the tipical sports story where two athletes crash and then become friends and teammates. Since it's a mini series, it has the feeling of a movie - the subplots are not fully developed so it leaves you wishing it had taken its time - and the main plot is resolved easily. It's a feel good story and I enjoyed watching it. I liked the friendships made and how the father-son relationship improves between Eun Ho and Mr. Park.

If you like sport stories, this one is a good one.

I Found this @kdramaxoxo, but I am doing this by myself. I actually rather enjoy thinking about these things (I love having some time off from school for a change).  

1. Favourite couple: 

Han Qi Luo and Chen Ling from Mars (2004)

I’ve seen Mars 5 (?) times now and the chemistry between them never ceases to amaze me. 

2. Favourite Actor:

...This is so difficult. There are so many great talents out there. I still think I have to go with Kimura Takuya.

He’s amazing in, well, everything. I’ve seen him in many dramas and movies, and I’m always so impressed by his skills. He is great at showing different emotions and just putting himself out there. He has also evolved tremendously (I think Long vacation (1996) is the oldest drama I ever saw him in). 

3. Favourite Actress:

Gong Hyo Jin I L-O-V-E her. 

4. Favourite Drama:

Worst possible question. It’s a tie between Mars (2004), It’s okay that’s love (2014) and Heart to heart (2015).

Forced cohabitation.

Love triangles with whiny exes.

I’ll do a top 3, there are so many great ones!

1) Coffee prince (2007) with Yoon Eun Hye and Gong Yoo, making out against the door. I mean, SOME REAL ACTION IN A KDRAMA!

2) Heart to Heart(2015) Choi Kang Hee and Chun Jung Myun, their first kiss in  Ko Yi Seoks apartment. Oh yass, so many emotions flowing there...and the chemistry...Uwaaah.

3) Last Cinderella (2013) with Miura Haruma and Shinohara Ryoko. When Hiroto kisses Sakura when she’s doing the dishes. YAAAY! 

25. A Scene You’ve Rewatched A Million Times

Another scene would be the make-out scene in Another Miss oh (2016) where poor Lee Jin Sang is in the room with the main couple. Cracks me up every time.

Currently it would be Go Back Couple (2017). I feel the story wasn’t elaborate enough for a re-watch, but I still enjoyed it before.

W - two worlds (2016). This drama got me so excited and for the first 5 episodes I was hooked, but then it just turned ridiculously repetitive, boring, unimaginative... I finished it, enjoyed it okay on sheer memories of the first few episodes.

Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo (2016) All the songs are purrrfect for a gloomy day.

Kang Ho Goo from Ho Goo’s love (2015). He’s a saint, looks great, apparently he’s a great artist + kisser, and he loves babies!!! He’s a perfect catch.

I rarely stick to entire OST’s, I prefer to listen to certain songs. I still very often listen to B’z - Konya Tsuki no Mieru oka ni from the drama Beautiful life (2000). The Queen songs from the J-drama Pride (2004) are also on my playlist.
