hey tumblr this is a fairly niche topic but its been pressing on my mind recently so:
back in late march i went to the sackler gallery in DC and they had an exhibit for korean artist Park Chan-Kyong, centered on his film Gathering. My friend and I found the darkness and relatively empty area of the film Fukushima: Autoradiography and Child Soldier to be really nice so we ended up there for around 2 hours, during which the film(s) looped at least three times. At some point in the runtime of Child Soldier a song came on, which I found to be good and wanted to know what it's called. Unfortunately I did not get a recording of the song nor am I able to find ANY information about this one specific film outside of the website for the sackler gallery, which only lists it alongside the others and does no more. There are no online recordings of it, no audio clips, no wikipedia page, NOTHING. If any of you by chance are familiar with Park Chan-Kyong's work, please help me find the song. please. it was so good
#since the film is about a north korean child soldier i started by looking for north korean folk songs and there is. nothing that I can find#park chan kyong#park chankyong#sackler gallery#smithsonian institution#park chan-kyong#park chan-wook#park chan wook#park chanwoom#PARKing CHANce films#filmography#korean art#istg im going insane because this film does not seem to exist outside of the sackler gallery i literally cant find anything mentioning it#at least under the name “child soldier”#entirely possible they just. misnamed it but the smithsonian is such a reputable institution it seems unlikely

South Korean Horn Prepares Her Nuclear Weapons: Daniel 7
Park Chan-kyong Published: 8:00am, 17 Oct 2024 South Korea’s pursuit of US approval to reprocess spent nuclear fuel is gaining traction, in a move experts say could set the stage for potential nuclear armament. Ambassador Cho Hyun-dong, Seoul’s top envoy to Washington, raised eyebrows last week when he said his country would persuade the United States to allow South Korea to build and operate…

still from Citizen's Forest by Park Chan Kyong (b.1956)
3-channel black and white video, directional sound, 2016
It is said that a ghost only appears on Earth when there is an unresolved conflict. In Park Chan Kyong’s three-channel film Citizen’s Forest (2016), viewers slip in and out of a comatose state of collective amnesia as they see ghouls from Korea’s past: young students in uniform, resembling those who died in the Sewol Ferry tragedy; men bearing glossy, skull-like helmets, presumably victims of the Gwangju massacre.

Who is your favorite artist/painter and how does their work inspire you?
"Hello! It's your girl Astrid," Soyoun sings into the camera. "I'll be answering some of your frequently asked questions!" She claps at the cameras. "Let's get it! Skrrrt!" After reading the first question, Soyoun hums and tilts her head to the side. She is aware she can go on all day when talking about her artistic inspirations. Then again, that's only one question and there's more to answer.
"Among the most popular painters, I'd have to go with Leonardo da Vinci, Michaelangelo, Frida Kahlo, and Claude Monet," she says with a nod. "Da Vinci, of course, is on some other level with how he experimented with different mediums and pushed for some of the things artists do now that were considered illegal back then. Of course, as an art student, he was one of the first artists I've ever heard of. As for Michaelangelo, I think his work speaks for itself. The attention to detail and the effort he put into everything he did is something worth emulating, in and out of art. As most of the painters I have first of were men, learning of someone like Frida Kahlo inspires more female artists like myself that this isn't just some male-dominated field anymore. I love how incorporated hidden meanings and messages in her paintings." Soyoun pauses to take a sip of water before continuing. “I’m a fan of impressionist paintings, so obviously the man who made the impressionist movement famous also inspires me. A small fact: his painting “The Water Lily Pond” was one of the first I successfully copied as a kid.”
Soyoun isn’t done just yet. There’s a lot more she wants to tackle on this topic. “As for Korean artists, I love Park Chan-kyong’s work because he isn’t afraid to depict what needs to be said. I also admire Lee Bul’s, Il Lee’s, and Jeongmoon Choi’s works. Lee Bul, to me, has sculptures that are both disturbing and beautiful at the same time. There’s something about them I can’t stop looking at, no matter how disturbing to me some of them can get. As for Il Lee, I find it so cool that he uses ballpoint pens to form his abstract art. Jeongmoon Choi, I love how her work is nothing like anything I’ve seen before.”
Realizing she hadn’t completely answered the question after waxing lyrical about some of her favorite artists, she lets out a soft laugh. “As for how they all inspire me, I guess they inspire me to want to be better and to get out of my comfort zones. A lot of the artists I mentioned are, or were, risk-takers who dare to do what isn’t taught in art classes. I would also love to be able to leave a lasting impression on someone, the way these artists left an impression on me!”

Expanding on film form and “Night Fishing”
The experimental piece “Night Fishing” by Park Chan-Wook and Park Chan-Kyong is interesting to me for numerous reasons, its a short film that merges aspects of standard film, with the music video and even documentary based cinema. Along with this it often borders on the absurdist natures of surrealism, which is intertwined the beautiful aesthetics of Korean paganism and shamanism, this style appeals to me directly as I feel it strikes a confident balance between the more avant-garde films I have discussed with that of films that would be considered more typical of the main stream preconceptions of cinema.
The film being shot entirely on the Iphone 4 is also greatly interesting as although it would have the budget for sufficient and effective lighting, the film is still beautiful computationally and inspires me to implement such great use of Mise - en scene and shot composition to create a picturesque and striking film.

36 Couples – many left the FFWPU / Unification Church
Updated December 16, 2018
▲ In Seoul, after the final ceremony for the 36 couples, there was a public procession of the couples in cars. Moon always sought maximum publicity from the mass marriages he held.
This list should be an accurate list of the original 36 couples who were married by Moon. During 1960-1961 he held three ceremonies. He then put all the couples together as one group which became known as ‘the 36 couples’. When some defected they were replaced by couples from the 72 couples group or others. For example Mr. Moon said: “No one knows, if Seuk Joon-ho [Dr. Seuk, the son of Mrs. Choi Won-pok] enters the 36 couples…” January 2, 1997, São Paulo, Brazil.

Some of the replacement couples:

33. Lee Chin-tae wife unknown defected from UC
34. Han In-ju wife unknown defected from UC
35. Lee Chun-yong wife unknown defected from UC
36. Hong Kwang-chul [wife may be Choi Myung-Ja]
This list was compiled in the early 1990s. Others will have died or defected since then.
▲ Here are 12 of the Ewha Womans University students who were expelled because of the“scandalous rites” of the Unification Church. After their expulsion, the students managed to meet President Kim Hwallan on May 23, 1955. She stood by her decision. This picture was taken on campus after the meeting.
(Top from left) Seo Myung-jin, Lee Gye-soon*, Sa Gil-ja, Chi Saeng-ryeon**, Park Young-sook, Kang Jung-won and Chung Dae-hwa (who was later married to Kim Young-whi)
(Bottom from left) Choi Soon-wha (the mother of Sam Park), Yim Seung-hee***, Kim Jung-eun, Shin Mi-shik (later known as Mamasan Choi) and Park Seung-kyu.
* Lee Gye-soon entered Kyunghee University in 1957. She left the Unification Church over 50 years ago and had a successful career as a professor.
** Before Chi Saeng-ryeon joined she was known as Chi Mal-sook, and after she moved to the US in 1973 she was known as Mal-sook Lee.
*** Her name may be 朴承姫 Park Seung-hee and not 林 Yim or Lim Seung-hee.
Kim Yun-rye was also expelled but later made a pledge to give up the Unification Church, and Ewha Womans University allowed her to return to her studies.
Eight of the expelled students entered other universities in 1956.
Ewha in the list of 36 couples = Ewha Woman’s University students.
These ten women joined as students during the Ewha University Sex Scandal of 1955. There were other students who joined, but they were not included in the 36 couples marriage, which took place in stages during 1960-1961.
The Hongs (couple 16) left in the 1990s. They are the parents of Nansook Hong. Her brother, Jin-whi Hong, was married to Ye Jin Moon. He left before Nansook – and he helped Nansook to escape the East Garden compound.
Moon bought a house for each of the 36 couples. Apparently, because Korea is a “low-trust” nation, this was one way of trying to ensure their loyalty. Moon: “In Korea I bought houses for many early members of our Church and in the future I would like to take the responsibility of buying houses for all the black, white and yellow people. I am the only one in history who is doing this, but it isn’t easy.”
October 3, 1976 Belvedere, New York. Translator: Bo Hi Pak.
The 36 couples were the first of two or three “Royal Blessings”. They definitely included the 36 and 72 couples and probably included the 124 couples. The wives from the “Royal Blessings” were all “purified” by Mr. Moon. The “Royal Couples” were also known as Mr. Moon’s “Tribe”. More is explained in this Shukan Post October 15, 1993 magazine article, published at the same time as Mr. Chong-hwa Pak’s book.
Some of the 36 couples became quite wealthy and lived in expensive properties. Some had Japanese members helping in their homes.
Moon kept many of the 36 couples separated from their spouses for years and years. This caused some couples great heartache – for example Kim Won-pil was one who longed to be with his wife. It caused complications in other couples.
It is a fact that the 36 couples all had “womb cleansing” pikareum sex rituals with Mr. Moon. The theology was explained to Japanese members in the early 1990s by Mr. Yoshiaki Hiro, Mr. Kunio Sano and Mr. Yasutomo Shirai. (Mr Takeru Kamiyama was to be the main lecturer, but he was in hospital with stomach problems.) There had also been lectures given in Japan about pikareum in the 1980s by a lecturer called Ota.
Here are some further quotes from Moon about the 36 couples:
“I have received many such certificates from Satan. One of the most dramatic was during the Blessing of the 36 couples. Incredible controversy erupted at that time; people were praying to God, “Please don’t let Reverend Moon take my son away. Let him die tonight instead.” … At the time of the 36 couple Blessing, the entire nation of Korea opposed me. I was a villain in the eyes of the country.”
December 27, 1981, Belvedere, New York.
“This is the first group of people I blessed. These cover every facet of our society every group of society so for everyone who accepts the principle there is room to go to heaven. They have their own ladder to climb up. They have their own channel. Do you understand? I want you to understand that I opened 36 doors so that every person here on earth has one door to get into. No opportunity is lost, there is always a door open for everyone out there, once they accept and repent they can go through one door which is the mercy of God.”
May 20, 1978, London.
“All women’s love should unite with me. The 36 couples should not think about their own family, but how to save the nation.”
July 14, 2002, East Garden, New York.
Taught at a Family Federation for World Peace and Unification workshop:
“The Purpose of God’s Providence of Salvation is to end the journey of God's sperm.”
