Parasola plicatilis
-Commonly known as the "Pleated Inkcap" or "Japanese Parasol"-
Where: Worldwide, widespread in Europe and North America
Usually appears in clusters within short grass lawns, garden beds, parks, and meadows.
When: May-November
I took this picture back in May, where a cluster of them were growing in my squash and pumpkin vegetable bed.
These mushrooms are not really considered edible. While nonpoisonous, there is no distinct flavor nor known culinary usage. They have been growing all over my backyard . . . which is actually a sign of healthy soil!
----------
Appearance:
As you can probably tell, the Pleated Inkcap looks quite delicate. It has a plicate cap that becomes flat, and it is never larger than 3 cm (just over 1 inch). There is an "eye" in the center of the cap that is tawny brown. It almost looks like a miniature daisy.
This mushroom is white or creamy in color with a slightly browned base. The gills are grey but become black as the Inkcap dies.
Taste:
There is no particularly flavor of the Parasola plicatilis, and it is too small to determine anyways. There is not enough "flesh" on the mushroom. Luckily, it is nonpoisonous, but I do not recommend trying to eat it regardless. In any case, it will likely shrivel and crumble at your fingertips.
On the bright side, the Pleated Inkcap is wonderfully healthy for your garden. When these mushrooms grow, it is a sign that the soil is efficiently moisturized and full of nutrients.
In any case, you should ALWAYS cook wild mushrooms for the safest outcome, even if they are known to be edible.
Medicinal Uses:
There is no known medicinal usage of this mushroom. However, inkcap mushrooms in general can be used to gather or produce ink. The inkcap mushroom drips a black, inky liquid containing its spores.
With the small size of the Pleated Inkcap, you may be better off gathering other inky cap mushrooms like the Shaggy Mane. They will naturally liquify on their own, and by dipping a utensil in the black liquid, one can begin writing or drawing with its ink!
----------
**Pleated Inkcaps have incredibly short lifespans, ranging from several hours to a full 24 hour period. They quickly shrivel under the sun and collapse under their own weight!
**The Pleated Inkcap looks pretty much identical to the Goldenhaired Inkcap (Parasola auricoma) and the Bald Inkcap (Parasola leiocephala).
Do not worry if you confuse them: they are all small, inedible, have similar life cycles and grow in generally the same areas. Goldenhaired Inkcaps are a bit larger, more uncommon, and tend to grow on woodchip mulch.
Bald Inkcaps have smaller spores than the Pleated Inkcaps, and its gills are not attached to the collar around the stem. The differences are very miniscule.
----------
For fun, here is an image of a mycorrhizal network. Inkcaps are considered "saprotrophic," meaning they break down leaf litter, animal waste, and other decaying matter.

Personality
Sola is a fairly calm and collected individual, but she's insanely easy to rile up and provoke. If the perceived nuisance isn't someone she cares about, Sola tends to simply blow up on them then and there, but with her family and friends she at least makes an attempt to not attack them on the spot and usually instead channels her anger into loud, complex riffs on her guitar.
Background
Sola is the second oldest Leech-Velour child, and, as far as her siblings are concerned, Jade's unspoken favorite. From a young age it was clear she shared his love of mushrooms, so they share a bond as the two 'weirdest' in their already weird family. Medley and Lucen live in fear of the days she's allowed to help their father cook dinner, despite Mar's assurances that Jade's days of 'experimental' cooking are over. Sola's are not, and the twins swear they'll live in fear until they are. As not-the-eldest, Sola has no pressing familial responsibilities, and drifts wherever her hobbies take her - that mostly being bad garage bands and pick-up games of magift with full-contact rules.
Unique Magic
Sola's unique magic is called "Heart of The Forest". When activated, it creates magical mushroom spores that induce a hallucinogenic state in anyone who breathes them in. Whether she uses this power for good or evil is heavily debated, but, like any true Leech, it's most often employed in collecting their favorite currency: information.
Trivia
Sola likes to accessorize her typically punky outfits with cute, mushroom-themed items, as well as bits of the typical 'mori girl' style.
Her name comes from the Parasola plicatilis mushroom, which is the smallest currently recognized species of inkcap.
She learned everything she knows about guitar from her Aunt Yvette, and they meet up often to play together.

Flower Friday
Thank you to @a-noble-dragon for the tag. (Did you see the nice bird post?)
I believe this is a New England aster and a moth mullein.
Something pink and dangly. Maybe a cape fuchsia?
My dad's amaranth (I put together that playhouse all on my own; please clap) and Jerusalem artichoke.
Hibiscus and flying thing that left before I got a good look at it.
And, are fungi allowed?
Some kind of parasola and a turkey-tail, which grows on the side of things (like trees) like little stair-step shelves, but someone (not me) must have broken it off, as I found it on the sidewalk by a school.
The flowers are getting fewer and farther between around here. I might have nothing but mushrooms and slugs next week.
I'm not caught up, so I don't know if there are other flower posts out there, but I'll tag @jamilas-pen @mostlyinthemorning @flowertrigger @filet-o-feelings and @stargazer56 and anyone who wants to jump in.

i obviously love big showy flowers as much as the next person but the best kind of flower is the kind that’s so small it’s in people’s yards and they don’t even notice it to eradicate it, like dayflowers and bridalveil and dogshade and field madder
87% of these pictures are from squatting in someone’s yard and that’s so fine with me
also good morning!!!!!

There haven't been any bug updates for a bit because 1) I didn't see many bugs, 2) I didn't have the energy to look for bugs. Or go outside, really. But today I found a bunch of little mushrooms so I will share those. I don't know a lot about mushrooms but I think the first two may be field mushrooms while the rest could be some type of parasola.
There were a lot of crane flies in the grass, which I was able to photograph too.
You can tell the difference between male and female crane flies because the males have a broad, sort of flat-ended abdomen while females have a pointed tail shape that looks like a stinger, which is an ovipositor (they use it to lay eggs). Crane flies are very harmless since they neither sting nor bite - most of them don't actually have mouths either - but they're very sort of 'flail-y' and can be quite annoying. Especially flying around your bedroom at 3am and refusing to get in the jar so you can throw them outside.
