spooky tuesday is a (now not so new!) podcast where we’re breaking down all of our favorite slashers, thrillers, monster movies and black comedies on the new scariest day of the week.

The paranormal activity movies are so much more fun once you start seeing Toby as the main character.

My man did not think he was going to be haunting this family for THIS long. He thought he was going to get his sacrifice next generation at WORST. He's so over it.

Also, I love that we keep learning more and more about him and his personality. He doesn’t like to be touched, he doesn’t like being made fun of or talked back to, he's impatient, he's super smart and sets up rube Goldberg type traps.

Also he's weirdly good with kids? Like he'll play tag with them and have tea parties with them and seems to be able to talk to them in a way that they see him as friend.

Like besides Katie he's our only consistent character throughout the movies and at this point every time he's on screen I'm going THAT’S MY BOY :D

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2 (2010) REWATCH

Believe it or not, even less happens in this movie than the first one. It adds some nice information but it also muddies the narrative in some ways. Not the strongest addition to the series, that is for sure.

We meet Kristi who has just given birth to a baby boy and then we find out Kristi is Kate's sister (Kate from the first movie). Flash forward to when the baby is like a toddler or something, old enough to walk around a bit. The family has a break in which leads to them installing cameras in their home to monitor things and deter future burglars. Little do they know they are picking up Paranormal Activity (dun dun dun)! It takes over half an hour into the movie before anything paranormal is big enough to be noticed though, when the ghosts slam the door on the teen girl. There are opportunities for only the audience to see Paranormal Activity like moving shadows and when the planchette moves on its own, but none of this freaks out the family until the door and even then the father is a skeptic. 

There isn’t exactly a plot per se, it is mostly just night's passing and things getting worse and worse very slowly until they finally realize that something spooky is happening. Even when they try to mention it to Kate she just brushes it off and says it is better not to talk about it. Probably the spookiest thing this movie does is having all the cabinets open at once, that was a good scare, but otherwise they copied the dragging scare from the first movie which was good but rather boring. The dog also gets dragged and is hurt but to my understanding she does not die so that is a plus for sure. After Kristi is dragged into the basement though she is different. Ali, the daughter, is scared of her and doesn’t really want the baby, Hunter, around Kristi because Ali did all this research about how demons love a families first born son and Hunter is the first male in their bloodline for decades. WACK. Anyway the dad comes home and he finally believes in the daughter and all of her theories because the mom is all wack so they sort of decide to pass the demon along to Kate… 

You might have already guessed it but this movie’s events take place just before the first movie’s events, which means the reason Kate and Micah were so haunted is because this family pawned their demon off on the fools. WACK. Kate gets the last laugh in the end, or rather whatever is possessing her, because she/it shows up at Kristi’s house to claim the child the night after Micah’s death. She kills both father and mother (good thing Ali was at an overnight school trip) and then takes Hunter away with her, never to be seen again (until the 4th movie). Ali comes home to find her dead guardians which must have been awful. Credits.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 2

SPOILERS BELOW CUT

— The jumpscares carried the whole movie, just like the first one. I appreciate jumpscares, but it can’t just be the whole movie. The brief bit of story was fun, but they could’ve done more.

- Characters : 5/10 - I love Abby, Ali and Martine to death. Kristi’s fine, Hunter is severely undeveloped, what’s his face dad whatever can shit and die, Katie was tolerable and Misha was barely there, which warranted a whole extra star.

- Plot : 1.5/10 - I wanted to say nonexistent, but there sure is one. A .5 to the movie’s general plot, but the 1 star is added to the tie in with the first. I did enjoy it, but it wasn’t good.

Cinematography : .5/10 - I’ve seen well-filmed found footage movies, like Incantation, and this isn’t one of them. They had the idea but the execution was poor.

Script : .5/10 - I don’t even know if this has a script, but if it does, it was terrible.

Acting : 7/10 - Ali’s actor was eating every single scene up. Kristi’s acting in the third act was good, if not, reliant on the events of the story.

Pacing : 1/10 - same as the first, pacing is nonexistent, due to the “documentary style” excuse. I’ve seen better pacing in national geographic.

Music : 0/10 - not applicable. There were so many times in the movie I thought it would benefit from screechy pulsing a la Longlegs, but I get why it wasn’t in this.

Special Effects : .5/10 - they tried… I can tell they tried… there was only one in the movie that freaked me out, but it’s pretty minimal and easy to figure out who they did it.

Advertisement : 3/10 - Didn’t give anything away but it felt like they were sucking the dick of the last movie instead of promoting a new one… the first one wasn’t even that good.

Ending : 4/10

SPOILER THOUGHTS : that basement sequence AHHH I legitimately screamed. I can’t put into words how much it bothered me. Katie killing Kristi was awful… did not feel a thing when she killed the dad. She took Hunter and now I’m sad that as well, but I feel THE WORST about Ali’s hand, she’s just a sweet kid she’s just a girl… I would’ve felt better if they just killed her instead of leaving her all alone in the end :(

Upon release, this broke the record for the biggest midnight gross of an R-rated movie with $6.3 million, and the biggest opening for a horror movie of all time, earning a total of $41,500,000 in its opening weekend (It is no longer even in the top 10).Very early on…

Synopsis from IMDB:

After experiencing what they think are a series of "break-ins", a family sets up security cameras around their home, only to realize that the events unfolding before them are more sinister than they seem.

My synopsis:

Creepy things start happening again to a new mom. Her husband doesn’t believe her. Her stepdaughter and the nanny/housekeeper are the only people that try to help. The results are mixed at best and disastrous for others.

My review

Solid sequel/prequel. Breaks from traditional found footage films by not having unknown actors. Didn’t take me out of it, but it might others. It doesn’t do anything groundbreaking. Follows closely to the formula from the first one, but is still highly enjoyable.

Rating : 8/10

How does it treat…

Women? The dad tries to shut the wife, the daughter, and the housekeeper down multiple times, but they were all right and he wasn’t. Reflects more poorly on him than it does them.

Does it pass the Bechdel test? Yes

How long till a woman speaks? 12 seconds. Impressive.

Minorities? The housekeeper has the answers, but her help is dismissed at first as witch crap because it doesn’t fit with the husband’s suburban middle class lifestyle.

Spoilery thoughts/notes below. You have been warned.

This found footage film already starts off differently. Usually they’re all actors you’ve never heard of before. That’s Sprague Grayden. When this came out, I’d just watched her in ‘Jericho’. I loved her.

The husband takes the baby to give him a tour of the house. He introduces the dog and a fireplace where daddy introduced mommy? Ew.

And the daughter is Mandy from ‘Last Man Standing”. She was my favorite character.

Katie! And the prequel has begun.

That german shepherd is gorgeous.

Katie joking that she’s the evil step aunt and that she won’t let the baby go. Adore the foreshadowing.

Coming home to see the house destroyed would unnerve the hell out of me.

Martine knows something’s up in that house. She’s trying to get rid of the bad spirits. She deserves a raise not ridicule.

“Release the kraken”. No, just, no.

The night shots circulating through really sets up the tension.

The mom is having a personal conversation with Katie. Why would she be filming it and whispering at the same time?

Hunter looking everywhere but at his mom is eerie. It’s like when a cat stares off in a corner in the middle of the night.

That’s right. You stand up for Martine. You are now my favorite member of this family.

I love when it gets to the night footage. I can’t help but scan the scene to see if something’s moving in the background. 

“Let’s check the security camera footage” What a novel idea.

Okay, a teen thinking the haunting is cool, seems rational to me. 

Threw out “what if it’s mom”. DAMN!

The dog is scared, but still protecting that baby. Good dog.

I get he wants things to go back to normal, but pretending nothing’s wrong is a wise option. 

She has her boyfriend come over. And she didn’t lock that back door. Tsk tsk.

And now they’re playing with a ouija board. He spells out pussy. He’s a teenage boy. That makes more sense than Micah playing with the ouija board.

The boyfriend thinks it’s all fun and games till it starts moving and he’s not the one moving it.

The front door is open and it doesn’t phase her? I do love how she tried to look out of the window above it.

I jumped when the door slammed shut.

I love how the dog trotted up to the door like I’ll help you.

The demon pulled the baby out of the crib and then left? What’s scarier to me is that kid had to make it down the steps by itself. And now he’s crawling up them. 

How did the baby get back in the crib?

I appreciate that the step mom was trying to take Ali’s side.

If they’d watch that security footage, they’d see what happened.

She’s closing all the cabinets. I’d leave them open and make the non-believing husband do it.

I appreciate she’s trying to be calm to not scare the teen, but still. 

Whispering “Katie said we can’t talk about it” is not an answer that Ali is going to understand.

Ali did research to show no male children in that family tree for generations. Use that brain girl.

That poor dog was lured into the basement.

No, not the dog.

Well at least the dad acted on that.

The fake out of her getting away only to be pulled back is brilliant.

The noise the demon/door makes when it slams is truly terrifying.

Okay, Christy just casually strolling up from the basement is all kinds of unnerving.

Your daughter is freaking out to be left alone with the baby and a step mom who isn’t doing well. Call Katie. Call literally any other adult.

Okay, the teen’s use of the camera is perfect. I’d want to document weird ass scratches on the inside of the basement door as well.

Were those made by Christy, the dog, or the demon?

The teen begging her dad to come home is heartbreaking. She sounds so scared.

The mom yelling at Ali not to touch the screaming baby, unsettling.

The actress playing the daughter is so talented. Her begging the dad to watch the video before he goes upstairs is heart wrenching. 

I get he needs a minute, but listen to your daughter. Get out of the house.

He called Martine! 

Now he’s arguing with her about what to do. You called her for help. Now shut your pie hole and let her help.

I love the grown adult and the teen arguing about the morality of passing the curse on to Katie.

I knew something was about to happen when he leaned in close, but I still jumped when Christy lunged at him.

They said Christy wouldn’t remember, but starting when? Because Katie asks if the creepy things are still happening and she says no, not what are you talking about?

And it goes into the beginning of the first movie. I do appreciate things like that.

So Micah was killed on the 8th. What was Katie/demon doing for a full day?

She kills the dad. He passed it along to Katie and didn’t say a word. Had Katie in their house, swimming in their pool and didn’t say a word. I’m okay with his death.

Why kill the sister? Because she was holding the baby? Or was it because she was part of that bloodline?

Ali survived! She’ll be traumatized for life with her parents dead and her aunt and little brother missing, but she survived.

Paranormal Activity 2 (2010)

Honestly, just kinda a bigger version of the first one, but without the novelty of being different. The attempts to expand the lore just kinda fall flat, since there's just so little story in each film.

I love Neon Frights Twyla so much. It took me some time to grow properly fond of her, but now she's THE doll. I used to want a few others but the satisfaction her different looks and styling them gives me is so much better than any other doll I have or is/has been manufactured that I've lost interest in them.

I still like my small collection, each doll has a place in my heart and a purpose (or, well, that's the way it was intended - I'm afraid Twyla snatched a few roles for herself now), I contemplated selling them and felt a sharp NO in response, so I'm not willing to part with them. I guess they'll be mostly only displayed now, even though I'm more used to playing with them - restyling, reorganizing the poses and their places on the shelf...

I wanted to take up sewing months ago - for more than a year, actually. But I barely managed just one simple and not very well-done temporary outfit before Twyla appeared. Now though... I've already made 2 outfits for her, and I'm even proud of the latter one! I want to make more though. Her image is just so vibrant and pleasant to my eyes.

I'm not sure what the exact reason is - maybe that she's made in my 2 favorite colours? Or just her overall look? No idea. I'm just happy she exists.

She's so much of a comfort doll for me that I took her on my week long trip to the countryside and was SO GLAD I did. Because everyone was nervous and snappish all the time, so I felt terrible, too, and one family member made me so angry just constantly... Then I looked at Twyla and felt much better. Aesthetic pleasure goes a long way I guess.

She sits to the left of me whenever I need to complete some tedious task that requires concentration - with my ADHD it feels like gearing up for fighting a mountain each time. But whenever I look at her, I feel more encouraged.

She watches over my sleep. My dreams are really interesting when I remember them, and I can recall just one or two really bad ones in months.

She really became my little companion.
