tuesday again 9/26/2023
six sentences or less, bc having a physical form has been super duper extra fun this past week
listening
i like Chappell Roan very much as an artist/performer/media personality (and have previously featured tuesdaysongs Pink Pony Club and Red Wine Supernova), but i do not like her new album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess very much as an album. it is not very good to listen straight through as a work. very high high and very very low vibes all over the place, three different kinds of club bangers interspersed with torch songs. After Midnight both sonically and like, vocal delivery? reminds me a lot of modern paramore?? chill but danceable, a canonically bisexual song.

what would we fucking do without Riptide Publishing and their batshit insane (lovingly) catalog? The Glamour Thieves by Don Allman is the platonic ideal of a "one last job"-style heist book, in gay urban magic/paranormal wrapping paper. had remarkably good action sequences, buckets of atmosphere, excellent pacing. i read it in one sitting and was up until 3AM. my library doesn't have the other two in the trilogy, so i'm impatiently waiting until there's more fun money in the fun money budget
JT is an orc on the way up. He’s got his own boutique robotics shop, high-end clientele, and deep-pocketed investors. He’s even mentoring an orc teen who reminds him a bit too much of himself back in the day.  Then Austin shows up, and the elf’s got the same hard body and silver tongue as he did two years ago when they used to be friends and might have been more. He’s also got a stolen car to bribe JT to saying yes to one last scheme: stealing the virtual intelligence called Blue Unicorn. Soon JT’s up to his tusks in trouble, and it ain’t just zombies and Chinese triads threatening to tear his new life apart. Austin wants a second chance with JT—this time as more than just a friend—and even the Blue Unicorn is trying to play matchmaker.

the next g/enshin update is rapidly approaching and that's about all i've been doing the entire time i've been sick. toodling around and finishing off stray quests here and there, accidentally discovering i never engaged with a fairly major quest, exploring nooks and crannies for stray chests and puzzles.
i did an extremely tiresome quest chain and rejuvenated this big tree that you can see from three other in-game nations which is pretty cool. i wish it looked slightly less like a nuclear test cloud?

top 3 albums of 2023?
also hiiiii i really like your outfits and your hair. your vibes are so cool 🌌🫣
hi, thank you! and thank you for the ask!
i REALLY have trouble defining my favorite albums every year. Usually it's made easier if one of my favorite artists release, but now it's hard. My favorite of the year though is easy:
Tumblr media
Gag Order by Kesha. I always, always ride for Kesha, probably more than I do for anyone else sans Carly Rae Jepsen. It's a very weird album and, historically, I don't do well with those, but this one is really good, probably because I get her. Like, me and Kesha are in it for life. I even love the interludes that have little to no singing in them which is a testament to how well they're done and how well they fit in the album. I have multiple favorites, some include Living In My Head, All I Need Is You (which started hitting EXTRA hard after my cat died), Too Far Gone, and, of course, Happy which feels like a more grounded and grown up version of Spaceship. No skips, amazing, love her forever.
I'd usually put Carly Rae Jepsen's release as my #2 if both have released in the same year and Kesha beat her for the first spot but sadly I'll have to break the tradition this year.
Tumblr media
As my #2 I have Diamonds & Dancefloors by Ava Max, I'm personally a big fan of her, both her albums are very fun and dancey, I like her songwriting, I like her vocals, they're not like super meaningful but I like to have fun. No skips although she gets a bit corny on a few tracks (Weapons, Cold As Ice). Love it.
The whole reason I'm having trouble with this...ranking is that these two are the only albums I can say are more or less 10/10, start to finish. Now let's go over the contenders for the #3 spot:
Tumblr media
Starfucker by Slayyyter is probably the strongest contender for #3 cause its highs are high, I love the soundscape and the aesthetics, and it really only has... one weak track (Tear Me Open) and like... two meh tracks (Memories Of You and Rhinestone Heart). The rest is either amazing or good.
Tumblr media
Then we got the elephant in the room, The Loveliest Time by Carly Rae Jepsen. This is a shining example of an excellent 2/3rds of an album getting DESTROYED by the absolutely horrifying other third. Carly loves to experiment on B-sides, and she usually pulls it off, but the tracks Anything To Be With You, After Last Night (horrible), Stadium Love, Weekend Love and Aeroplanes completely sour the experience for me. See, I actually kinda like Aeroplanes, Weekend Love, and, hell, even Anything To Be With You, which the whole fanbase unanimously loathes, but, frankly, those tracks are very meh for her standards and especially for the standards set by the other tracks on the album which are AMAZING (I play the Shy Boy - Put It To Rest + Kamikaze sequence daily.). It kinda reminds me of Dedicated Side B, which had a lot of killer tracks, and a few... less good ones (This Love Isn't Crazy, Window, Heartbeat, Comeback, NIDHCAA), but frankly, DSB's "worse" tracks are more or less decent. You know it's bad when I've streamed her album from last year more this year
Tumblr media
We also got Miley and Lana's albums, both of which have like... five or six good tracks each for me and the rest is unlistenable so I can't put them at #3. We got Paramore's album, which is honestly....... good but their lyricism has really..... taken a plunge towards the toilet, the last two tracks are tragic, the News and Big Man Little Dignity are catchy but corny and..... idk if i'd place it above Starfucker and The Loveliest Time. Rebecca Black's Let Her Burn has a few standouts but the rest of the tracks are just okay and Performer is the worst song of her career. (Doe Eyed is like #4 on my year end chart so far though).
Yeah, I'd give #3 to both STARFUCKER and The Loveliest Time, for old times' sake.

Last year I started a project to listen to all 3800 songs I had on my phone at least once because I found I was mostly just listening to the same 500 over and over
In the middle of the project, I added Herbie Hancock's and Paramore's discography to the list and had to backtrack to catch up.
Now that I'm through with the project, here's what I've taken away:
My taste in music is immaculate. You are all jealous.
I have faded on some bands that used to be my very favorites. TV on the radio doesn't really do much for me anymore outside of one or two songs. Their spot was basically fully usurped by Radiohead. By the way the Radiohead is in my top 10 bands now.
On the subject of favorites, I want to talk about some Rising Stars. L'imperatrice has blown me away with how much I've fallen in love with their last album. I am so excited to see more work from them even though they are french. It might be a bit misguided to call Bleed from Within rising stars because they've been putting out albums for a decent little while now but they haven't gotten as much recognition in the US since they are from Glasgow. Their album Fracture is pretty close to being a 10 out of 10. I do have to leave it with a nine though. Tei Shi blew me away when I saw her live and her music is pretty good, she has a lot of potential and I want to see how she goes from here
Chevelle, Gojira, Deftones: these are three bands that have absolutely earned their spot as being among the greats. I love so many of their songs but not as a full listening experience. They are best served in a playlist of other bands so every now and then you get a shot of Excellence.
Ye and Lorde - ADHD struck. Over the course of four fucking months I always forgot to go into my phone and delete these albums I don't actually want to listen to donda. Also this is no hate to Lorde I just don't really like her style.
Red hot silly fellers - these guys are basically ingrained in my brain folds. I will always come back to them but I never really listened to their early work before. I understand now why Blood Sugar Sex Magik was such a big deal now that I've listened to the albums that came before it. Don't get me wrong, one hot minute was really good but it has the unfortunate positioning of being between Blood Sugar Sex Magik and the rest of their early work. Some of the early stuff is rough.
Where is Janelle Monae?? I was obsessed with her music 5 years ago how have I not put any on my phone. that's another thing that I will have to fix just like removing Ye from my device
The Deep resounding Joy that filled my spirits whenever machine girl popped up on the mix was unmatched. Machine girl still reigns supreme
At some point I will upload a few screenshots of fun little coincidences that appeared in my full set list playlist. There are a lot of titles that songs have
Go listen to the full album Dis Is Da Drum by Herbie Hancock

So here it is my Top 10 list of what I consider to be the best Songs released in the Year 2023
1. bad idea right?
This song just rocks. It’s got a real 90s alt feel catchy chorus and it’s just a great song overall.
Olivia Rodrigo once again proves she has staying power in the music industry with her latest album and this particular song.
2. Houdini and 3. Dance the Night away
Dua Lipa takes the next two spots I was absolutely obsessed with her last album and it’s disco type feel and on her next record she seems to be continuing that trend and building on it which I’m really looking forward too.
Dance the Night away should be nominated for an Oscar for best song after Disneys outputting was very weak this year and if your gonna nominate a song for Best Song you can’t go wrong by including two tracks from the Barbie Album which is coincidentally the next song on my list.
4. What Was I made for.
I’ve heard so many movie themes this year and this by far is the best one.
Billy Eilish once again I think has a shoe in for best song at the Oscar’s after already winning one already.
This song is just relaxing fits in with the movies theme perfectly and just has a good message overall about finding purpose in life when you have lost your purpose.
5.All By Myself and 6.Easy Lover
Ellie Goulding had a new album come out this year but you wouldn’t know it considering it didn’t chart none of the singles hit the top ten.
Sadly it was the year of bro country and her new album was overlooked but it’s just as good as her others and the Songs All by Myself which samples Enjoy the Silence by Depeche Mode in a great way and the Dance Track Easy Lover should have charted but they didn’t and that’s partly why I’m also putting them on my list they are not just my some of my favorites but deserve a wider listening audience as well.
7. This is Why
After almost 20 years Paramore is still making excellent music. There last album was fantastic and this builds on that Alt feel the last record had. It has a great bass line it’s just a good groove filled song.
8.High in Brighton
Fizz is an indie pop super group consisting of Dodie, Orla Gartland, Greta Issac, and Martin Luke Brown. Allmake great music on their own but together they weave infectiously delightful indie pop that is just amazing to listen too.
I first discovered them by coming across High in Brighton on YouTube and being a fan of of some of the members solo work decided to give it a listen and it was amazing gave me real Queen Night at the Opera Vibes with all the different musical styles and instruments
9. HOT TO GO!
Once again another song I discovered on YouTube and made me an instant fan of Chappel Roan she has some great songs from her newest album but HOT To Go! Is the most catchy and singable
10. Welcome to my Island
A song and Artist I discovered listening to New York City Public Radio. Caroline Polchek has excellent vocal range and Welcome to my Island is just one of three new songs of hers I absolutely adored this year from her new album. This one is the most catchy though even though I really enjoy her other song Sunset.
So that’s my list
Hope you enjoyed my first writing post and the songs I chose. There were so many good songs just this year alone but those are the ones I spent the most time listening to. SZA, Ice Spice, and other artists had amazing songs as well so check them out.

Haha, sorry!! I won’t look so hard next time, and then you can keep your secrets :)
I wanted to ask, how many albums do you think Minor Inconvenience have released? Are they all studio albums? Names of them? And, do you think all of the boys have their own favorite album?
That’s a lot of questions, but fun to answer still, I hope!! — Band Boys Anon
This took a while for me to answer bc M! is only half mine!! I had to get Mars' (the bestie @holocrypticdreamer if you're new around here :P) opinion too, gave us an EXCELLENT reason to talk about albums kdjhgkfjgh This might get long so I'm gonna put it under the cut, but before I do: thank you SO much for asking about them, band boys make my brain go brrrrr kxjhfgkfdjgh have a little kissaroo from me to you:
Tumblr media
all of their albums and the type of albums they are in chronological order are as follows:
You Should Have Seen the Caution Signs - EP
This is their fist EP, probably unpolished but clearly showing potential! Blake and Fallon are the main songwriters when we start and will remain that way for the next few albums
Minor Inconvenience - debut studio album
Their first album! Mars describes it as "likely the most juvenile sounding, leaning into more pop punk/pop rock" and I have to agree. They're leaning to be a "real" band, you know? Not a garage band or one played out of a friend's basement, a band with gigs and shows and fans :)
Lethal Injection - second studio album
Leans more punk rock than the first did, maturing a bit, getting closer to the sound that will ultimately be seen as theirs
Fatal Flaw - third studio album
This album puts them on the MAP babey, top of their game, peak form M! here. Songwriting shifts heavily to being spearheaded by Icarus and Blake. You know how every band has an iconic album everyone knows? This is M!'s
Call of the Void - live album
Recorded during an international tour, this album captures the very last of Icarus' performances as a member of M! and he leaves the band the night it is recorded. You too can relive the last night Icarus Nikolau was the lead guitarist!
Majorly Convenient - compilation album
This album is released during what is known to fans as The Drought - a long hiatus in the wake of Icarus' departure as the band recuperates, finds a new lead guitarist, and settles into existing without the man who named them.
Angel Wings and Broken Things - fourth studio album
A comeback album! This one is written during The Drought and captures a similar feel to Lethal, but with a much more mature sound - and it's Kip's first album! Though the grief and anger expressed in this album, the songs actually written for it, feel more like something written for everyone in the band BUT Kip
Making a Name - fifth studio album
Finally, everyone has a bit of creative control here, Fallon has let go of it almost completely, and it results in a blooming of their creativity. This album really, truly belongs to all of M! and everyone gets at least one solo, at least one time to shine.
You and Me, Makes Us, Makes We ft. Flightless - sixth studio album
Affectionately called the reunion album. This is the end of the rift between M! and Icarus, he works with them on this album, performs with them, and it feels like they are whole
❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🖤
WHEW, that was a lot huh!! we talked a lot about the music that inspires what we think of when we imagine M!'s music (old p!atd, fob, mcr, paramore, set it off) and I'll be the first to say Mars has such good music opinions, imo, he is so correct so often skjdfhskjg
as for their favorites, I think my boys' opinions would look like this:
Kip: Making a Name (he finally felt in the band, like a real part of it, this was finally his band too, like he belonged there with them, like he wasn't just the guy standing in for Icarus. It wasn't just their band anymore, it was his too.)
Yasha: You and Me, Makes Us, Makes We (finally finally FINALLY, all of his friends, together and making their art, their whole family in one piece again, Yasha is thriving and nothing will bring them down ever fucking again)
Sterling: Fatal Flaw (he will always hold it so close to his heart, they found the sound they were looking for here and it felt like the greatest achievement in the world for them all. Yes, they've gotten even better since then in his opinion, but nothing will make him change his mind that that album truly is their core essence)
---
Icarus: You Should Have Seen the Caution Signs (Icarus will never shy from telling you all the other albums are better than their very first, that he was so sloppy in Caution and he can tell you everything wrong with it, give you an itemized fucking list, but his favorite is that damn EP. It brought them all together in the first place after all)

hi hanna! many congrats on 100, lovely ! <3
this celebration is so cute and creative it took me so long to decide

- lilacprentiss
neveah <33333 i finally finished it!
it took me an eternity but here we are 💞
first up your lil mood board 🍫 it’s my first :)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
you can find the playlist to it here: 🥞
(i added ten more songs since you waited so long :) and put them in an order that i thought had a nice flow)
here’s my thought process while choosing the tracks:
paradise, beautiful, gold, iridescent, heaven, easy to love & all this and heaven too describe your blog, content and you perfectly 💛
the last unicorn because you’re a silver lining in dark times & your grace is unmatched - to a point where some might get jealous and try to hunt you down
too shy & noticed because i’m so glad we’re mutuals and your tags under my posts always make me smile, i’d love to talk more but i’m shy haha
daffodils, magnolias & black water lilies elegant flowers for an elegant lady 🌺
daydreaming & so close to magic because your blog is simply enchanting
white flag & heart of gold because you seem peaceful and kind 🤍
god is a woman and she has your name
aber ohne dich (but without you), i know alone, if i ever lose your love, let your good heart lead you home, herz (heart) & heart-shaped box because you may feel lonely sometimes, but your heart will go on, you deserve a happy-end
stay awake & your moon hello fellow nighthawk 🌚
salt, honey & stars and butterflies just random things i love and associate with you 🦋
every cloud, cloudy shoes & lila wolken (lilac clouds) because i loooved your cloud theme and you often bear the ☁️ emoji
trust & devotion because i’d always trust your eye for aesthetics and you’re devoted to your creations <3
flower of the desert flowers again, mixed with the enduring thing - one drop of water will keep you going
stardust & moonstone are you sure you’re human? you seem ethereal to me ✨
wisdom cries & when i was older because i think you’re wise for your age
i could cry just thinkin about you need i explain?
your 🧁 <3
since you probably can’t speak german: the song is about the ephemerality of perfect moments, about everything moving so fast that it’s nice to slow down sometimes, about falling into your lovers‘ arms and disregarding everything else for a short eternity
Kannst du mich noch einmal in den Arm nehm'?
can you wrap your arms around me one more time?
Noch einmal in den Arm nehm'
wrap me in your arms again
Zieh‘ mich so nah wie's geht zu dir
pull me as close as possible
Und dann dreh’n wir uns langsam
and then we’ll spin slowly
Gegen die Uhr der Zeit
against the hands of time
Langsam
slowly
they were my favorite german band for the longest time :)
as for your 🍦, here are my top 5:
enchanted
sparks fly
haunted
better than revenge
mine
excellent choice btw! and usually i’d tell you my all time favorite songs now as well, since i know taylor swift of course, but i fear i would simply be listing her whole discography lmao
and lastly, your 🍓:
magnolias are my favorite flower, i have two trees in my mother’s garden that i adore with my whole heart
the last unicorn was my favorite movie as a child, although i did get quite a few nightmares from it
clueso (the guy who sings aber ohne dich and herz) is from the capital of my state/region. maybe that’s why his music feels like coming home
lena (who is featured here with stardust) was my idol from 4th grade on for some years. her first album was the first cd i bought for myself
since there were so many songs i couldn’t decide haha
i really hope you enjoy(ed) this, it took so long and was made with love 💜
i would appreciate it so much if you would let me know about your experience here <3
thanks for visiting!

so, i talked about album openers, and if you have me, i’d love to talk album closers now. because, there’s nothing better than a album closer that makes you feel like you absolutely have to press repeat. here’s my favorite 10 in alphabetical order by band.
THE END. - AS IT IS / THE GREAT DEPRESSION.
Tumblr media
what a good way to start this list, and what a perfect ending to this album. The Great Depression in its whole is incredible-- dare i say a masterpiece-- but this song stands out to me because it manages to be angry and defeated and almost uncomfortable. i mean, that bridge? come on! i can’t wait to listen to new music from As It Is, such a talented group of people i’ll miss Ben and Foley tho :(
GOODBYE - BILLIE EILISH / WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP WHERE DO WE GO?
Tumblr media
what can i say? i’m a sucker for a good reprise. one of my favorite things about this album is that it’s a very cohesive piece of artwork even though all the tracks seemed to be stand-alone singles. this last track is the perfect example of that as it is the sum up of the greatest hits of each song. i just love it. i think it’s a pretty clever way to finish an album.
THE LITTLE THINGS GIVE YOU AWAY - LINKIN PARK / MINUTES TO MIDNIGHT
Tumblr media
i mean, this song ends so epically, please. and i only put this one because it’s my favorite one, but “Powerless” and “Sharp Edges” are also strong album closers. i mean, i still can’t listen to “Sharp Edges” without breaking down in tears. i miss you, Chester :(
PLAY THIS WHEN I’M GONE - MACHINE GUN KELLY / TICKETS TO MY DOWNFALL
Tumblr media
ah, this fucking song. he went and wrote a suicide letter to his kid. i mean, are you trying to break my heart into a million little pieces or you just happened to do it by chance? this song is so brutally honest, if you’re not in tears by the end of it, are you even capable of crying anymore?
FAMOUS LAST WORDS - MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE / THE BLACK PARADE
Tumblr media
i mean, no shit, right? this is one of my ultimate most favorite MCR songs. i still get goosebumps whenever i listen to it (it’s been 15 years for fucks sake). hell, i cried my eyes out when i listened to it live. i just love this band so damn much.
THE BETRAYAL (ACT I) - NICKELBACK / FEED THE MACHINE
Tumblr media
say whatever you fucking want about Nickelback, but it’s a good band. and this song is so fucking good. Ryan Peake, i fucking love you. Incredible guitar player.
DYING IN L.A. - PANIC! AT THE DISCO / PRAY FOR THE WICKED
Tumblr media
so, to be honest this is one of my favorite things Brendon’s ever written. the pauses, the belting, the melody, the fact that’s just piano and strings-- ugh! i can’t even... still, much like Linkin Park, let us not forget about “Build God, Then We’ll Talk” and “Nearly Witches (Ever Since We Met)”, because those two are incredible album closers. fuck, i miss Ryan Ross, just take him back, Brendon!
UNDERWARE - SUGARCULT / START STATIC
Tumblr media
ok, technically a hidden track BUT it’s still the song that closes the album. and if you don’t like it then we can totally talk about “I Changed My Name” because it’s my favorite fucking song in the whole world, so--
TWENTY ØNE PILØTS
Tumblr media
bare with me here, because all-- and i mean every single fucking one of them-- of  twenty øne piløts’ album closers are fire. quiet fire, but fire nonetheless. from “Isle Of Flightless Birds” to “Leave The City”, look me in the eye and tell me none of them have you in tears by the end. i love how Tyler excels at ending an album on a bittersweet and sad yet hopeful tone consistently. ahh, i love this band so fucking much, so much talent.
I FELT YOUNGER WHEN WE MET - WATERPARKS / FANDOM
Tumblr media
and we’re back at closing the post with a Waterparks song. and from the same album, no less! such a strong song to end Fandom with, for fucks sake! the abrupt ending, the looping back to “Cherry Red”... boi, yas. love it. i think the fact that this song loops back to the very beginning of the album is one of the most clever things Awsten has ever done (yet).
HONORABLE MENTIONS!
“Men Are All The Same” by The Used from their album Artwork. speaking of reprises... aahh... so good. this album is so fucking flawless through and through, man... i love the whole thing so much. i feel like The Used is such a huge band but we still not talk about them enough.
“exist” by Bleak Soul (aka: Ben Langford-Biss, ex-As It Is) from album existential meditation. is it an EP? technically? idk, no one cares. speaking of me crying to a song. my favorite thing about this song being the closing track is that at first listen it seems to be very happy and makes you think, ‘oh, great! so the album isn’t that depressing after all!’ and then you pay attention to the lyrics and you realize it’s probably the most depressing song on the album, EP, whatever. i fucking love it.
speaking of EPs... “Burned Out” by dodie, Human EP. listen, i’m serious about this girl. she’s so fucking talented. she deserves more attention!!! ugh, can’t wait for her debut album to drop in March. but back to the song, it’s the perfect contrast to “Arms Unfolding”, that starts all hopeful and bright; “Burned Out” ends out on a very sour note. but the lyrics are something that needed to be said, not only for dodie’s own personal story but also to portray a view from the artist’s perspective of what meet&greets and just what being a public figure in general feels like.
“Starting Over” by Evan Taubenfeld from unreleased album Just Sign Here... i mean. this man just gets me, but aside from that. stunning album closer.
“Born For This”, Paramore, Riot! talk about getting hyped by the end of an album, amirite? love that they used to open shows with this track. and speaking of Paramore: “Tell Me How“ from After Laughter. again, perfect contrast to the beginning of the album. love that.
and last but not least... “How Did I Fall In Love With You?” by Backstreet Boys from album Black & Blue. Howie D. belting, need i say more? didn’t think so. but given i’m here... the harmonies, the fact that it’s just piano and strings (my weakness in case you haven’t noticed). also, the song is about falling in love with your best friend and i’m a fucking sucker for a good love story.

yeah i count that as rock i'm not gatekeeping. i wanted to know if you listened to the emo trinity but i didnt want to straight up ask lol. do you still listen to them? do you have a favorite album from the trinity? what do you think about pretty odd? i've heard it be described as beatlesque at least 3 times but i don't what people mean by that half the time (like softer rock???). if it's true then makes sense i'd like the beatles bc i like that album
Lmao anon that's valid ❤️
Honestly, I wasn't good until like the beginning of last year at really getting into people's entire discog so I wouldn't say I know them especially well actually. I'm not sure I've ever listened to a single Panic! album in full djdkdksmsk. I do still listen to them, but irregularly and I actually know zero about FOB's post American Beauty/American Psycho releases.
I think the reason Pretty Odd is called beatlesque is cause of how many genres it covers though or something, I've seen that description too. Anyways Nearly Witches is >>>>> as a song. Also the Ballad of Mona Lisa and House of Memories and I have legit no clue why anyone thinks High Hopes is bad or a sellout it's like.... a genuinely really fun song. The prechorus is so cool!! I feel like the only valid answer for MCR is Black Parade, which I definitely have listened to in full, and it's excellent!! For FOB my answer's Save Rock And Roll cause that album plus Paramore's self-titled really defined 2013 for me. It's more pop rock than emo but it's just so fun, I don't think it has any skips... Might have to relisten later today actually.

‘got tagged by @wancestroll to share some albums I’ve been listening to lately (thank u angel). some musings under the cut.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This album came out at the end of last year but I stumbled upon it towards the beginning of this year. It has gotten me through some Bad moments and I have had it on repeat variously throughout the year. It’s a really coherent and beautiful neo soul/blues album with excellent production.
Michael Kiwanuka is so bloody talented it’s almost not fair! It opens up with a BANGER (You Ain’t the Problem), which never fails to make me want to dance and I just put it on repeat when I’m having a bad day. It’s a really beautiful journey through some highs and lows, other personal favourites include Piano Joint (this kind of love) - which always makes me cry and yearn because it’s beautiful - and Hero.
It’s the perfect album to blast on sunny days driving around with the windows down because it’s too hot, but it’s also the perfect album to blast when you’re feeling down and want to capture the feeling of a summers day. In short it is gorgeous and I have been obsessed.
SAWAYAMA - Rina Sawayama
Goshhh this album is just so perfect as a debut album. You would actually be forgiven for thinking this was her second or third full album release, I haven’t been this impressed with a debut album since Tei Shi’s Crawl Space. It honestly sparkles with so much passion and personality.
She manages to blend so many of my favourite genres into incredible songs that just create such a unique sound, that still sounds incredibly like Rina Sawayama. She draws from such a wide array of influences and experiences - from heartbreaking songs touching on her family to tongue in cheek evaluations of societies obsession with celebrities and wealth.
It’s fun, it’s heartbreaking, it bangs from start to finish and truly cements Rina as one of the more exciting pop acts at the moment. Highlights for me include: Comme des Garçons (like the boys), Love Me 4 Me and Who’s Gonna Save U Now?.
It was the perfect soundtrack to a weird, weird year, I could go on for years about this but it would just end up being me screaming and squealing and pointing at every little detail she added (like the concert sounds of who’s gonna save u now?!!!!)
Petals for Armor - Hayley Williams
This album was probably the one I was anticipating the most this year, from the moment she started dropping hints about PFA I was hooked. As many of y’all will know I am a MAJOR Paramore and Hayley Williams fan, I love the way they have evolved as they have grown up and how it’s weirdly evolved with my own tastes.
I truly love this album so much, it’s not massively coherent but sometimes albums don’t need to be. Hayley tries out so many different vibes and sounds it makes total sense why she released it as three EPs, giving each of the songs the space they all need in the world before we scrambled to listen to all of them at once.
It’s also a hugely personal album and as someone who has felt similar feelings of depression and loneliness and grappling with loss and heartbreak I really love how some of the lyrics just really summed up stuff I didn’t even realise I was feeling.
It starts out very moody and atmospheric and carries us on a journey from anger through to love in such a nice way. There are some duds (I am not a massive fan of My Friend for example) but she delivers them all in such a way I rarely skip songs I don’t love.
Highlights for me are: Leave it Alone (very atmospheric, very autumnal, very late night walk in the woods, love the imagery and it kills me), Cinnamon (didn’t love this when I first heard it but I was WRONG, it’s really fun and makes you wanna dance and is an ode to loving yourself which we all need a bit more of), Dead Horse (my favourite fuck u song about an ex, it’s cutting where it needs to be and it’s a banger, and it makes me feel like summer and also smashing someone’s car with a baseball bat, and srsly Fuck You Chad), Why We Ever (another one I didn’t vibe with butttt actually now loveeeee so much, it’s so peaceful and full of love and sadness and makes me feel like I’m floating and also like I wanna cry? as someone who has a predilection to self sabotage something good I felt it), Sugar on the Rim (honestly I just wanna dance to this song, preferably in a gay club with pals, it’s so fun and 80s I adore it) and finally Crystal Clear (it makes me feel like I’m floating on a pool of water and serene and peaceful and loved and I’m so happy for her that she can write songs like that, it’s about embracing fear in love and just a really gorgeous song, also the sample of her Grandad’s song is adorable).
All in all I adore the album and had it on repeat A LOT since it came out, hopefully I will be able to see her perform it live at some point but at this point I am just thrilled that we have been able to experience an album from Hayley Williams like this.
Flip Phone Fantasy - Ocean Grove
Finally, Flip Phone Fantasy is an album I was introduced to not so long ago (thank u Allie) and I love it. It slaps, it fucks, it is the perfect mad modern nu-metal esque album.
Again I love the way it blends lots of different genres and sounds and vibes to create something very unique, fun and energetic. I have had this on repeat for about 2 weeks now, so you could say I’m a little obsessed.
Highlights on the album include: SUPERSTAR (just like a real hot song, love the imagery, wanna dance in a club to it, instead end up just dancing around the house and shower to it instead), GUYS FROM THE GORD (very trance/drum and bass kinda vibes, which I loveeee, reminds me of shady clubs at Uni and going on hikes up Constitution Hill high to watch the sunrise, 10/10 vibes) and ASK FOR THE ANTHEM (another v hot song but in a different way from Superstar, the lyrics are immaculate and the vocal effects are killer, again would party to this song).
Their first album is also a banger but honestly at the moment this is the kind of vibe I’m going for. Something a little sexy, quite summery, makes you want to dance and also rage at the same time - which is honestly an Eternal Mood.
also some honourable shout outs to: Chromatica - Lady Gaga, Fumbling Towards Ecstasy - Sarah McLahan, Fetch the Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple, What’s the 411? - Mary J. Blige, Crisis - Alexisonfire and Die 4 Ur Love - Tei Shi for getting me through this year.
I am tagging @danielthicciardo, @reynobody, @efe-uno, @alonsista, @j-button and @josefnewgarden1, @laptimedeleted, @mushroom-callum, @stones-and-water, @formulaelectrified.

Top 5 albums!
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh my 'lit music' playlist is 56 hours long and I'm supposed to pick 5 albums?? *screaming*
um #1 is something Sleeping At Last, though I'm torn between Atlas: I and Yearbook because on one hand saturn north and light but on the other hand emphasis snow and pacific blues?
#2 is either My Head is an Animal or Fever Dream by Of Monsters and Men and if I have to pick between the two I will scream
#3 Cove by A Weather. have you ever tried searching for a band that stopped existing ten years ago and didn't get much attention in that time and also includes as common of a noun as 'weather'? not easy. the album is incredible. the drop up into major at the end of Small Potatoes? the entirety of It's Good to Know? just the way they write these wonderfully conversational lyrics about small things yet somehow you know exactly what they mean? if you only listen to one thing off this list make it this
#4 Strange Desire by Bleachers. slapping vibes. thicc synth bass. excellent driving music. what's not to like? (answer: that one song with Grimes is what's not to like) Gone Now is also very very good but I play synth so I have to pick SD and the two songs he just released? chinatown and 45? fucking garbage. maybe I'll grow to like them but for now they stray much too close to incomprehensible gen x caterwauling for me
#5 Far by Regina Spektor, with the exception of Laughing With, because she does this thing on every album where it's just banger after banger, absolute bop following absolute bop, the hits keep coming and they don't stop coming, and then in the middle just for fun she throws in something that absolutely sucks for no reason. Soviet Kitsch is a very close second
honorable mentions in no particular order: after laughter paramore danger days mcr silver & gold sufjan stevens transatlanticism death cab for cutie ocean eyes owl city heretic pride the mountain goats a constant state of ohio lincoln winter wheat john k samson untitled album sigur rós oh wonder oh wonder 5am amber run the entire discography of the oh hellos just to name a few??

Are you tired? Are you taking this survey because you can’t sleep? No. I had 11 hours of sleep last night so I’ve felt awake for most of today haha. It’s only 7 PM, I don’t have to go to bed yet; plus if I couldn’t sleep, I’d rather have a show playing in the background.
Do you have something important to do? Graduate. The virtual university-wide grad is on the 26th while the virtual graduation for my college is happening in early August (holy shit it’s going to be August?!). After that I’m pretty much thrust into the ~real world~
Do you like Jalapeno Cheetos? They’re okay, but I don’t like Cheetos to begin with. I’ve had a few flavors though and if I had to eat a whole bag I’d want it to be the jalapeño one because I like it the best.
Do you wish you had a new phone? Sure, but just because I always want to have the latest Apple phone. I love my iPhone 8, though.
Name one thing you ate today? Spicy instant noodles. It didn’t feel spicy enough for me after I had a few bites, so I added a lot of sriracha sauce. Not only was it a lot spicier, it tasted a whole lot better too so there’s no regrets there.
Do you like 80’s music? 60’s music? 90’s music? I don’t really like older music so I honestly don’t enjoy any of these decades when it comes to songs. I suppose there are several punk rock albums I like that were released in the 80s and 90s, but that’s all for me.
Do you find rap music annoying? If the rap style is already bordering on spoken word or if the artist is just simply reciting the verses, I can find it annoying. There has to be a certain speed or rhythm for me to enjoy it, like how Eminem or Jay-Z raps.
What song is stuck in your head? Heaven Is A Place on Earth by Belinda Carlisle thanks to the 80s music question. Always a good song to get stuck in my head.
Have you ever been to Germany? I haven’t.
Do you drink coffee in the mornings? No, just water. I prefer my coffees in the afternoon or evening; I’d hate feeling jumpy and palpitate-y in the morning.
Do you become a fan of lots of things on Facebook? I used to be a fan of so many pages, even of those that I only remotely liked, so my feed was clogged for a bit. That was like eight years ago though, and now my list is just down to brands or people I genuinely enjoy and want to support.
What time do you go to bed on school/work nights? For the most part I made sure I’m in bed by 9 or 9:30, but for more hectic and work-heavy weeks, I’d give myself until midnight.
Have you ever seen a therapist? I haven’t. I know I need to, but there are other more pressing things I’d rather spend my money on.
Do you get in trouble at school often? Not at all, and if I did it’s only because I was talking in class. In my old school they would hunt down girls suspected of being in a same-sex relationship, and our guidance office would even employ secret spies within each batch to spy on each of us and relay to our counselors the names of those who were probably bi or gay. The guidance office keeps a list of names for each batch, and each name would be called throughout the year so that they can confront the student and pressure them to come out. It’s the culture here and it’s fucking revolting.
I hated the system so much that I deliberately showed off my relationship with Gabie so that they’d put me on their list and so that I could act like a smartass once I got called to the guidance office. That’s how done I was with the school. But idk. Gab and I were excelling academically and each of us took on certain leadership roles within the school, and we were generally seen as responsible students. I guess that was enough for them to just let us go.
Do you watch videos on YouTube? A lot of them, lol.
Name a song that makes you happy. Still Into You - Paramore
Name a song that makes you want to dance. Formation - Beyoncé
Name a song that brings back memories. Sparks - Coldplay
Does the song above bring back good or bad memories? Definitely good. It’s a romantic song, so.
What decade do you think is the best musically? I dunno. I feel like each decade had their own specialty, like disco for the 70s, pop for the 80s, etc. so it’d be hard to judge which decade was the best for music across the board.
Do you take a long time to get ready in the mornings? Not at all. I wait till the last minute for me to get out of bed, so when I’m up I only have like 10, 15 minutes to prepare.
Do you wear a lot of makeup? No, I never wear makeup unless I’m headed to a party or a formal occasion.
Have you ever written poetry or fiction? I’ve written poems only for class. I tried my hand in fanfiction when I was around 14, but I was horrible, I didn’t like it, and I quit after the first chapter.
Do you know how to read music? Nope.
Do you regularly use a blow dryer? Nah, only for special occasions where my mom prefers to fix and style up my hair.
When was the last time you went to church? First week of March, before the lockdown.
Would you date someone who was a different religion than you? No. I’d rather be with someone who was atheist/agnostic, but still open to talk about and maybe even debate on religion.
What is your best subject in school? History, English, English grammar, statistics.
Name something you do nearly everyday. Take a survey, at least during the quarantine.
Do you take surveys a lot? Yeah but my enthusiasm wavers. Some days I’ll take one and other days I’ll take four or five.
Have you ever had sushi? Yeah. I make it a point to have it a few times a month. Loooove sushi.

My Top 10 Albums of 2018
In March of 2018, Spotify released the “Smirnoff Equalizer,” a web app that analyzed the percentage of Spotify listens by non-male artists. My results were embarrassingly dude, so I decided that I needed to devote more of my ear-hours to female artists. Thanks, Smirnoff!
The results of this initiative aren’t perfectly reflected in my top 10 list because I devoted a lot of spins to albums that didn’t come out in 2018 (in an attempt to correct my blind spot). Key new-to-me non-2018 albums:
Phoebe Bridgers - "Stranger in the Alps" (2017) (My Jam: Motion Sickness)
Waxahatchee - "Ivy Trip" (2015) and "Out in the Storm" (2017) (My Jam: Recite Remorse)
Carly Rae Jepsen - "E•MO•TION" (2015) (My Jam: When I Needed You) and "Cut To The Feeling" (2017) (on repeat, forever)
Charli XCX - "Pop 2" (2017) (My Jam: Out of My Head)
Paramore - "Riot!" (2007) (My Jam: Misery Business, duh)
But, time keeps on ticking, ticking, ticking, into the future, so I have to talk about how I did with last year's list, and move on to this year's releases.
So, what's still in my current rotation from my 2017 top 10? More than half of them: Sleep Well Beast, Turn Out the Lights, Flower Boy, Ctrl, Melodrama, and DAMN. And, of couse, the Frank Ocean singles.
Runners up:
Kendrick Lamar et al. - "Black Panther: The Album" (so, so close to cracking my top 10. Sets a new standard for pop/hip-hop soundtracks. This decade's O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack? Does that make any sense at all?)
BROCKHAMPTON - "Iridescence" (I had BROCKHAMPTON's "Saturation" trilogy on repeat this year, but their new one didn't quite do it for me. I think they're still trying to figure out how to be their best musical selves post-Ameer Vann. Oh, but: 1999 Wildfire is THE BUSINESS so I'm not worried)
Pusha T - "DAYTONA" (Good, mean. Classic Pusha)
Nils Frahm - "All Melody" (Saw him live this year; he's going to be one of those artists that I see as many times as possible, a la Andrew Bird)
Other highlights: Drake released another bloated album. I blocked Kanye on twitter and didn't listen to ye. Had frequent fits of emo obsession, like getting into American Football many years late. Listened to Frank Ocean's "Moon River" and Spotify's POLLEN playlist a bunch.
Mistakes I'm probably making: underrating Mitski. Not mentioning Soccer Mommy in this post. Sleeping on Vince Staples's FM!
10. Cardi B – Invasion of Privacy
Many people wrote many things about Cardi B this year. I have nothing original to add: she is charismatic, unique, and good at rapping. She made good rap songs and put them on a good rap album that I listened to a bunch.
9. Mac Miller – Swimming
This is the first Mac Miller album I've latched onto. It's partly because of his tragic death, but even before that, I was impressed by his effortless flow and the way the entire album meshes together. In a year where rap underwhelmed me, it was nice to see real growth from a guy that I mostly only liked before because he gave beats to Vince Staples when no one else would. Ugh. Rest in peace, Mac.
8. Arctic Monkeys – Tranquility Base Hotel + Casino
I finally realized that the reason Arctic Monkeys have such staying power (for me and for the world in general, I guess) is that their lyrics are consistently delightful:
Take it easy for a little while Come and stay with us It's such an easy flight Cute new places keep on popping up since the exodus It's all getting gentrified I put a tacqueria on the roof It was well reviewed Four stars out of five And that's unheard of
7. Mitski – Be the Cowboy
"You know how you all loved Puberty 2? What if I did that but literally every part of it was better?" – Mitski, probably.
6. Big Red Machine – Big Red Machine
It's the folktronica The National and Bon Iver mashup that I've been waiting for. This album didn't have to be good. It could've ended up more like EL VY's Return To The Moon which was fun and listenable, but ultimately a B side. But nope: these songs are excellent, and wouldn't be out of place on a The National or Bon Iver record.
(I don't mean to outright diss the EL VY record. I love that the whole Eaux Claire bunch are playing around with projects like that, and like Big Red Machine. It seems like a pragmatic way to keep the mother bands from getting stale. But, like, pragmatic in a fun way, not in a robotic, soulless way.)
5. SABA – Care for Me
Saba's a kind of parallel universe Chance the Rapper where everything is sad. I know that's not fair - Saba isn't characteristically sad; it's just a sad album (and, weirdly, it's easier for me to love overly sad albums than overly happy albums). The album is good enough that I can forgive the cloying "Logout." And I can finally forgive the occasionally tasteless skits on Bucket List Project.
4. Beach House – 7
I was out on Beach House. I saw them live when they were touring for Bloom and I was underwhelmed by their live performance. It was fine but it wasn't for me. Not only did The Fox's acoustics muddle everything, the band didn't seem to have much energy for the set. I get it. It's Beach House. There's not going to be a mosh pit.
I still listen to every new Beach House album, though, mostly because Teen Dream was an important touch point in my indie rock awakening. And I'm glad that I do, but otherwise I would have missed 7, Beach House's best album. It's like they took Teen Dream and turned the "sleepy" dial down a notch or two. *chef's kiss*
3. boygenius – boygenius
Julien shredding on "Stay Down" is probably enough to warrant a spot on this list. It's fun to see these three women -- who are generally all about the introspective/sad vibes -- rock out. I feel lucky to have seen them perform these songs, and I'm crossing my fingers for a full-length in the future.
This entry also serves as a proxy for Phoebe's "Stranger in the Alps" which (boo) came out in 2017.
2. Lucy Dacus – Historian
It's not just that the songs are expertly crafted emotional indie music; Lucy's voice is stunning, and it's even more stunning live. Seeing her perform live bumped this album up a few spots for me for sure. I know this isn't supposed to be a "good stuff I saw live" list, but seeing these songs live helped to contextualize the lyrics and helped me understand Lucy as an artist (I hadn't heard of her before they announced the boygenius tour).
1. Tierra Whack – Whack World
I haven't been as excited during a first listen of a non-Frank/Kanye/Kendrick/Vampire Weekend album as I was for Tierra Whack's brilliant debut. It's got everything you need: fun beats, memorable hooks, and creative verses. It's only fifteen minutes long, so I naturally listened to it over and over again that first day, excitedly Slacking my co-workers in the #jams channel. Like the rest of the known universe (i.e., indie rap twitter) I wish that these songs were longer, but the silver lining is I don't ever listen to any of these songs without listening to all of these songs, which is a treat. Man. Just thinking about this album makes me smile. You could've listened to the album instead of reading this post! Go!
Next year is going to be the tenth year of compiling my top ten albums! I'll definitely do something to celebrate – maybe a top ten of the decade? Maybe a retrospective of all hundred albums that made my lists? Maybe some fresh charts and graphs? Will tumblr even still exist next year? Will the United States? Stay tuned!

hello hello! many thoughts for you today. first of all, school is starting in a week (wah wah), but im almost done with all the work i need to do, and i'm going to my friends beach house for the weekend as a last summer hurrah (woo hoo!)...what else, let me think. my boy drama persists, which is never fun, but alas. im currently really upset because i thought i'd be able to make it to a svt concert, but all the dates that they'll be playing in my area won't work for my schedule...i really wish i could see them, they've been one of the only things keeping me sane this past year. maybe the sadness is just amplified by the fact that one of my best friends moved away today? idk, there have been a lot of ups and downs lately.
but enough about my first world problems, how are you doing? how is school? i feel like a proud mom to hear that you're applying to grad school, thats amazing! good luck with all of your applications~
tonight i'm listening to and highly enjoying the song the only exception by paramore! i've been trying to find new songs to sing for my voice recital, and i think its a strong contender. do you have any new songs you've been loving lately?
have a wonderful day or night!
i think i answered this in my dreams, so i apologize for the belated response
ending your summer at a beach house sounds lovely. i hope everyone had a great time, and you made some sweet memories!
shit, three rough things in a row. i’m sincerely sorry about all of them. idk what’s going on with this boy drama, but i hope it’s not taking up too much of your energy. having a friend move away is never easy. will they be too far away to make regular visits? and not being able to see seventeen when they’ve been keeping you sane 😩 have you seen them before? fingers crossed they’ll be back in a year or so…
i’m alright. i’m still not loving my first 8 week course of the semester, but i’m pushing through. it’s the only option lol. thank you! i’m trying to push away all my pessimism, but it’s definitely nerve wracking to pursue something i really want and risk rejection.
excellent pick! ooo and you sing too!! when’s your recital? let me know if that’s the song you end up going with. i’ve been listening to villain and ain’t gonna dance off key’s new album. i’ve also been listening to arcade by nct dream a lot recently. it always makes me feel good >.<
