Then maybe if we have a slow talk with my parents, they will understand. I don't want to run away because I still love my parents. But then papa... he really prioritizes his business. Perhaps there is no other option but to run away...
*Cherry sits at the edge of the bed with a sad face*
Kenshin: unless⌠I show my worth to your father by building a business, one that is bound to be much more successful than motonariâs. As long as I crush his business, I might stand a chance.

My Pirate Lord and Our Life Ch. 63
Warning: Childbirth and some strong language.
Chapter 63
Ava had been hit by her labor pains and so they had begun heading inside. As they were almost to the entrance, she let out another gasp. "AhâŚ"
"You alright, flower girl?" Motonari asked, worry tightening his chest.
"Ava?" Misa asked from her place at Ava's other side.
"I thinkâŚI think my water just broke." Ava answered.
"For real this time?" Misa asked.
"Do you see any reason for me to fake this right now?" Ava replied. She then grit her teeth as another labor pain struck her.
"Right." Misa replied. "Let's get you inside."
Without hesitation, Motonari reached down and scooped Ava up into his arms. She looked up at him, her face strained with the pain. "Don't worry, I got ya, flower girl. Ya just hang on tight." He told her.
Her arms came to wrap around his neck and she clung onto him. Motonari quickened his pace to get into the castle that much faster.
He was only vaguely aware of the others following them. His focus was on his girl and the obvious pain and exhaustion she was feeling. It felt like an eternity to get to the room that had been set up for the birth. He set her down on the futon and knelt down beside her. Misa was shutting the door behind them before coming over and kneeling down in front of Ava.
"I'm going to check and see where you are." Misa said. Ava nodded. Her hand reaching for Motonari's.
He responded lacing their fingers together and giving a gentle squeeze, letting her know he was there for her. He wasn't about to leave her side.
"I hate to tell you this, Ava, but you've still got a while to go. You're about four centimeters dilated." Misa told her. "You've got six more to go."
Ava let out a groan. "What can we do?" Motonari asked, wanting to do anything to try and ease her pain. He hated seeing that look on her face.
"Try getting up and moving." Misa answered. "Try going around the room. Then as things progress, we can try just being in different supported positions."
"You're reallyâŚsuggesting a walk?" Ava asked, looking at Misa.
"I know, but given that we are five hundred years away from you know an epidural, we have to work with what we've got." Misa replied. "Besides, moving around can help with speeding things along."
Ava shot Misa a glare but nodded. "AlrightâŚI'll tryâŚanything." Motonari was helping Ava to stand up and was then wrapping an arm around her waist to support her. She clung onto him and slowly they began to walk around the room.
"I'm going to step out and get a few things." Misa said. "I'll be right backâŚand Ava I know you said you don't want to be a show, but I am going to need some assistanceâŚ"
"Get Kimi and Asuna." Ava replied.
"Right." Misa said before exiting the room.
"You just hang onto me." Motonari assured Ava, kissing the top of her head.
Ava looked at him. She was about to say something, when her face contorted in pain and her grip on him tightened.
They paused in their walk. "I got ya, AvaâŚlet it out if ya need to." He told her. He was quickly removing one of his gloves and then taking her hand in his, wanting her to feel his touch, hoping it would bring her even the tiniest bit of comfort. "Ya squeeze any time it hurts. Squeeze as hard as ya can."
"I'mâŚah!âŚI'mâŚ" She then let out a cry before her muscles were relaxing.
"Ya alright?" Motonari asked.
Ava nodded. "YeahâŚthey'reâŚgetting stronger."
"Ya wanna keep getting walkin'?" He asked.
"I think so." Ava answered. She was then looking up at him as they resumed their walk around the room. "WhenâŚwhen they get backâŚdoâŚdo you want to goâŚget cleaned up? I knowâŚI know you've got to beâŚuncomfortable."
Motonari shook his head. Only my girl could be thinkin' 'bout me and my comfort when she's clearly in pain. He thought. "Don't ya worry ' bout me. I'll be just fine."
"But I knowâŚ"
"Ava, yer all that matters." He assured her, kissing the top of her head. "I'll be alright."
Ava leaned into him. "I love you."
The door was sliding open then, Misa was coming in followed by Asuna and Kimi. They were all carrying different items. One of them was a large ball Motonari had recognized as being made out of rubber from their time in the future.
"Oh, so the labor must not be too bad if we're still at the stage of you saying you still love him." Misa remarked.
"Well, pretty sure Ava is just a different breed there." Asuna remarked.
"Nah, just wait till the baby is crowning." Kimi replied.
Ava glared at them. "What'sâŚ.what's all that stuff for?"
"For you." Kimi answered. "We brought several things with us."
"I canâŚsee that." Ava replied.
Kimi was putting down the large ball and then Asuna was folding up some fabric and putting it next to the ball. "Come on, let's try what we can to make you more comfortable." Misa said.
"Come on, flower girl." Motonari encouraged.
Ava nodded. They started walking towards where the ball was, when another contraction hit and Ava was gripping onto him again. Motonari held her as her knees threatened to buckle it seemed. "I got ya. I'm right here with ya." He whispered to her.
The contraction ended and her grip slackened up again. She was breathing hard, gasping as she had been holding her breath during the contraction.
"Ava, you really need to breath during your contractions." Misa told her. "Now come on, let's get you over here."
Motonari was helping Ava over to the ball. Misa instructed her to kneel down on the folded fabric and then lean forward and hug the ball.
"Come back here and I'll show you something you can do to help her." Kimi said.
"You showingâŚhim that thing I did for you when you had Kotoro?" Ava asked, turning her head back to look at them.
"Yup." Kimi answered. She was then directing Motonari on a massage technique to help ease some of Ava's pain. "Put one hand right here and then the other right hereâŚand apply slight pressureâŚmassageâŚjust like that yup."
"Is that helpin' any, Ava?" Motonari asked.
"A little." Ava answered. She was then gasping as another contraction hit. She was gritting her teeth.
"Come on Ava, breath." Misa encouraged as she knelt down in front of her. "Come on, hee hee hooâŚhee hee hoo."
Ava met Misa's eyes and followed the breathing. "Hee hee hooâŚhee hee hoooooo! Dammit! Ah!"
Motonari rubbed his hands gently up and down Ava's back, trying to provide any measure of comfort he could. He hated seeing her in pain. He hated even more that there was really nothing he could do. Slowly the contraction eased and Ava was panting and crying.
Motonari felt his heart tearing in two at her pain and her tears. "OhâŚKimiâŚwhy didn't you warn me it was going to be this bad?"
"You were there." Kimi reminded her. "But nothing can truly prepare you."
The contractions seemed to be getting stronger and closer together as Ava's labor progressed. Under the guidance of her friends, Motonari helped Ava as she changed positions several times, trying to find some comfort. The night was dragging on, Ava's cries of pain getting longer and louder as her labor progressed.
Motonari couldn't keep the frown from his face. He wished in that moment that he could take the pain for her. She didn't deserve this. It had already been a stressful night with the attack on the castle, but now this.
They moved positions again. Ava sat on the ball, Motonari was kneeling in front of her and she was leaning forward, holding onto him. He was rubbing his hands up and down her back. He kissed her forehead. "Yer doin' great, flower girl." He told her.
"I don'tâŚfeel so great." She replied. Kimi was behind Ava, a towel wetted with warm water in her hands. She placed it on Ava's lower back and began running a smaller and harder ball up and down Ava's back, pressing firmly on the towel.
"AhâŚthatâŚahâŚ"
"Feels good?" Kimi asked.
Ava nodded. "As good as anything canâŚright now."
The hours continued on. Ava's pain growing more intense. It had been several hours since her water had broke and several more position changes before Misa was checking her again. "You're fully dilated now." She announced.
"What's that mean?" Motonari asked.
"Time to start pushing." Misa answered.
They had already changed Ava out of her kimono and she was just wearing a white shift she had made to sleep in. They were all moving, Motonari going around behind Ava and helping her get into a squatting position. Her hands held onto his.
Misa was kneeling in front of her. "Alright, Ava, when your next contraction hits, I need you to bear down. Push, okay."
Ava nodded, breathing hard. Her body was coated in sweat. Kimi and Asuna were slightly off to the side, holding towels and blankets and other items at the ready.
The contraction hit. Ava cried out, her grip on Motonari's hands tightening as she screamed and cried out. "Ah! FUCK!"
It wasn't the first time he's heard her curse, but he knew she was in terrible pain if she were saying that one. He could feel how tense every muscle in her body was as she pushed with all of her strength.
"Come on, breath through it Ava." Misa encouraged her.
"OhâŚthat breathingâŚis bullshit!" Ava shouted. Slowly the contraction subsided and she fell back slightly into Motonari's arms, resting a moment against his chest.
"Yer doin' great Ava." He told her again, kissing her temple.
She was panting. "EasyâŚfor youâŚto sayâŚyou got the fun part ofâŚthis."
"Pretty sure you enjoyed that fun part, too." He reminded her.
She glared at him. "NotâŚfunny."
Before Motonari could respond, Ava was tensing up with another contraction. She leaned forward slightly and pushed. "AH! DAMMIT!"
The contraction ended and she was falling back against him once more. "I'd do anything to take this pain from ya, if I could." Motonari told her as she rested against him. "Ya really are doin' great though."
Ava squeezed his hands. She had tears coming down her cheeks, mixing with the sweat that coated her flesh. She opened her mouth to speak, but another contraction hit her and she was leaning forward once again, screaming incoherently as the pain wracked her body.
Over and over again, the contractions wracked Ava's body. She would push, crying out before falling back and taking the smallest moments of respite against Motonari's chest. He would give her a kiss to the temple each time she fell back and whisper words of encouragement to her. "Yer a tough one, m'lady."
"Have to beâŚto beâŚmarried toâŚyou." She replied, her voice tired, but the teasing lilt coming through.
"I'll let that one slide, since I know yer in pain." He replied, kissing her temple once again.
Ava was being hit by another contraction and pushing once again. It had felt like it had been several hours since this stage started, but it couldn't have been much more than one or two. Though it had been several since the start of her labor.
"I can see the head!" Misa declared, just as the sky outside began to lighten, signaling the first rays of the sun. "Just a couple more pushes and your baby will be here, Ava!"
Ava nodded. She was leaning forward once again as another contraction hit and was pushing. "AHHHH!" She cried out. She was falling back against Motonari once again.
"Alright, one more big push ought to do it, Ava." Misa said, encouraging. "You're doing great."
"Ya got this flower girl." Motonari said. "Yer almost there."
Ava nodded once again. She was soon leaning forward, bearing down and gripping tightly to Motonari's hands as she cried out. All of her strength and effort going into this last push.
Motonari kept his eyes on her face, terrified for her, but also looking at her with so much love. Her cry began to slow down as another cry joined hers. "Your baby is here!" Misa declared.
Motonari looked down and saw the tiny infant in Misa's arms, still covered in the mess of blood and goo from Ava's womb. Misa was soon placing the child on Ava's chest as she fell back against Motonari. Tears of joy and relief came to Ava's face as she cradled their baby to her.
Kimi was coming over with a towel and laying it over them. There was a flurry of activity from the other women as they finished getting things cleaned up and organized. Motonari's eyes stayed locked on Ava and their baby.
Ava was looking down at the baby. "She's beautiful." She said, her voice choked up with emotion.
Motonari kissed Ava's temple once again. "She certainly isâŚcourse with you as her ma, how could she not be?"
Ava looked up at him smiling. "WellâŚI guess I finally managed to figure out a birthday present for you, my love."
Motonari chuckled. "She's the perfect one." He agreed. "YerâŚyer really somethin' else, flower girl."
"Happy birthday, Motonari." She told him. "Don't think I'll ever be able to top this gift."
"Thank you, AvaâŚI love youâŚboth of youâŚmy girls."

You know who I'm gonna ask for in the foster dad ask game lol. If I can only have one, Motonari please. If I cab be greedy can I have Motonari, Shingen...and Yukimura (I feel like there's potential for comedy woth Yuki and Moto haha)
@writingwhimsey, haha, I donât blame you!
How Motonari, Shingen, and Yukimura would be as foster dads:
Motonari:
It happened so fast that it made his head spin.
Motonari was docked at the port of Sakai, handling some shipments when suddenly, a cloaked woman handed him a baby in a hurry, dashing off.
It took a few seconds for the pirate captain to register what had just happened, but when he did, he tensed up immediately, breaking into a cold sweat as he quickly handed the baby to the person nearest to him, which was Hiroyoshi.
âG-Go and find the woman who just handed me a damn baby! Quickly!â He urged, as the older gentleman nodded, looking down at the quiet baby and going to do what his lord asked of him.
He just touched someone elseâŚ
Even if he was wearing gloves, he felt slightly nauseous.Â
Despite Hiroyoshiâs best efforts, it appeared that the mysterious woman was gone without a trace.
Which meant Motonari, the head honcho, was now stuck with some ladyâs baby.
â...If I may, my lord⌠This baby is quite the quiet one. You should take it in. It would be cruel to abandon it.â Hiroyoshi told him, as Motonari sucked in his teeth in annoyance.
âTell that to the lady who just dumped it in my arms!â He barked, his sharp red eyes going to look down at the baby. He didnât want to hold that thing, it had the capabilities of doing everything he despised in human beings.
However, when the babyâs eyes opened and went to look at Motonari, Motonari felt as if he was looking back at his younger self, defenseless, with nowhere to go and no one to care for him.
As much as he hated the idea of taking a little one in, he hated the idea of inflicting the same fate he was subjected to in his youth to the baby⌠So he took the baby in.
Unlike other babies, this one never let out a peep, not even a small cry. When the baby was awake, their eyes would just stare at Motonari. Most of the time, however, the baby just slept, to the point it even concerned Motonari.
âHiroyoshi, what the hell is wrong with this baby? It isnât being annoying at all like I heard babies are supposed to be!â Motonari confided in his loyal vassal, who merely chuckled. âOh, my lord, consider it a blessing that you have been given such a good baby!â
Over time, the cold pirate warmed up to the baby, even more than he had warmed up to his pet Wallaby Kajisuke. Since the baby was a girl, he decided to give her a name befitting her more-than-bizarre circumstances of âjoining his crewâ: Umiko.
She very quickly became a part of the crew, their treasure that they would do absolutely anything to protect. Though Motonari didnât like to admit this out loud, Umiko really brought out the best of him,. She reminded him of the humanity he still had deep down, of the heart he thought he had long abandoned.
Much to everyoneâs surprise, Motonari would very quickly be her primary caretaker. He would feed her, clothe her, and even braid her hair when she had it long enough. He would teach her everything he knew about how to live life at sea, and even the basics of being a merchant. He taught her so much about his profession, that her first word would have been âstockâ before she even called Motonari papa.
The older she got, the more Motonari would teach her, especially on self defense and speaking multiple languages. She would have spoken for a period a combination of Japanese and Portuguese before learning to separate the two languages, which meant that only he and a select few would even understand what she was saying for a while.
Motonari made sure that Umiko would grow up to be one of the greatest merchants ever, and that she wouldnât be a pushover. She would be steadfast and confident in her many abilities he had taught her, and would always do it with the neatest of braided hairstyles. Umiko particularly favored the fishtail because of her namesake.
He was such a proud foster dad⌠Though he would only admit it to Umiko, and no one else.
Shingen:
Shingen was on his way to his favorite teahouse to indulge in some sweets when he found himself halting as his ears picked up on a certain sound.
It was in a backalley where he found a baby⌠And another unsettling sight that made him sick to his stomach.
In these tumultuous times, anything could happen, including the very sudden loss of life, a reality he himself knew very well.
â...You poor thingâŚâ Shingen frowned as he crouched beside the bundle, and went to pick it up.
For once, sweets could wait. This poor baby needed to see a doctor immediately.
After many hours, and many of the Kasugayama Castle Residents questioning him, Shingen was able to get the baby back to full health.
Despite finding the baby boy in a dark backalley, Shingen thought to name him Kousei. After all, just because his start in life was rough, didnât mean the rest of his life had to be.
While the baby boy got some well needed rest, Shingen decided to take to building a special area of his room for the little one, taking after him like a doting father.
Shingen decided to make a toy for the little boy, so whenever he would cry, he would cease upon seeing the toy.
âDonât cry, Kousei. Look!â Shingen smiled as he then took the spinning top he made, and spun it in front of the baby boy, who looked at the toy in awe, tilting his head like a curious puppy, which made Shingen laugh.
The rest of the residents, besides Yukimura, found Shingenâs fatherly love towards Kousei to be quite⌠Excessive. Shingen even made a basket to wear where Kousei would be in while he walked around town. It caught womenâs attention, which was something Shingen had no complaints about.
In Kousei, Shingen saw that brilliant fire of life. The way he looked at the world, the way he was always so excited to see something new. It was something that furthered his resolve to get his homeland back, to not surrender until he had fulfilled his own wishes and the wishes of his people.
As Kousei got older, Shingen would teach him many things, such as carpentry, horseback riding, and the most important skill of all⌠How to pick up girls.
âSo, how did it go with Asana today, Kousei?â Shingen would ask as he was working on some new furniture, only to see the now adolescent Kousei fold his arms and pout. âNot good at all. She said I was being weird today, but I did everything you told me to do!â He stomped his foot, as Shingen raised a brow. âOh? Show me what you did.â He turned to him, only to fight an incoming snicker as he saw Kousei strike the cheesiest pose ever.
âSo, Asana, how would you like to go to the teahouse and have some dumplings as sweet as you?â He then winked in an equally comedic way, which had Shingen laughing, not being able to hold it back any longer.
âO-OI! That is what you told me to do to impress her!â Kousei glared at him, as Shingen shook his head. âO-Oh, Kousei⌠You are just like your Uncle Yuki. It seems to me that you are going to need a lot of practice to impress Asana.â His laughter died down, as Kousei sighed.
No matter what obstacles Kousei would have to endure, Shingen knew he would persevere.
Yukimura:
Today was supposed to be another simple reconnaissance mission in Azuchi with SasukeâŚ
âSupposed toâ being the key words.
Some ragged man was running through the bustling market of Azuchi town, when he spotted Yukimuraâs stall, and ran to him.
âPlease, take care of him!â The man begged him, handling him a baby, before running off, as Yukimura paused to process the fact that he was now holding onto a baby.
â...Huh?!â Yukimura gawked, it finally sinking into him as the baby looked up at him with just as much confusion.
âI-I canât take care of this thing! I am supposed to be undercover!â Yukimura started to panic, before he noticed his panic was just scaring the poor baby boy, who started to cry.
âO-Oh, no no, donât cry! UhâŚâ He then looked over his stall, before handing the baby some fancy handkerchief to play with, that only made the baby stare dubiously at the item, and then at him.
âD-Donât look at me like that! I never took care of a baby before! Hell, I never even had a lover before!â Yukimura averted his gaze with a stammer. What was he supposed to do in this very strange predicament?! He couldnât just abandon the baby, and by the look of the old man, trying to return the baby didnât seem like a good idea, either.
So, when his bff came back from his spying, he gave him plenty of suggestions on how to deal with his predicament, all suggestions he barely could make heads or tails with.
âUh⌠Nevermind. I will figure out somethingâŚâ Yukimura sweated nervously, as he looked down at the baby.
With many, many, trials and errors, Yukimura eventually found a way of parenting the baby that worked best for him. It wasnât perfect, but hey, the baby got all of its necessities fulfilled, right?
Since he needed to come up with a name, he came up with the first name that popped into his head.
âOkay, baby, your name is gonna be⌠HaruâŚâ Yukimura stared firmly at the baby boy, who blinked up at him, before smiling. Seems like Haru was the winner.
As the baby boy grew older, Yukimura decided to train him in the ways of hunting and basic first aid, so he could survive anything life throws at him. This resulted in many incidents, including Haru and Yukimura franctically running away from many angry boars.
âI-I think⌠I prefer the boar⌠from the castleâŚâ Yukimura panted, as Haru looked up at him with a cheeky smile. âThe boar?... You mean the princess of Azuchi you are madly in love with?â He smirked, as Yukimura tensed up. âW-Who told you that?! I donât love that wild lady!â
âYes you do! Papa loves the boar lady! Papa loves the boar lady!â Haru chanted with a haughty laugh, as Yukimura sighed. If this was any indicator, it was that Haru was going to be a handful. When it counted, at least, Haru cared for those in his life, including Yukimura who he saw as his papa.
This was a very strange turn of events for Yukimura. Everyone teased him over it, but he now didnât mind this role. Haru gave some normalcy to his very chaotic life. Every time he looked at Haru, it motivated Yukimura to work harder to reclaim his homeland.

Middle Ground
A Mitsuhide Akechi fanfic - approx. 2200 words. This scene occurs well after the events of the romantic epilogue. Fluff.
First: Mitsuhide and the Maiden
Previous: Bonding
âSo . . . separate beds?â Mitsuhideâs wry smile was only a little bitter.
âYes. I know itâs silly. Iâd . . . Iâd rather be in there with you.â The chatelaine, soon to be Lady Akechi, looked down, her expression a mixture of shame and defiance.
âItâs fine. I will have you all to myself soon enough. What is a night or two apart?â
She looked up without raising her head, trying to gauge his emotions.
Mitsuhide wasnât having any of that. He took her chin between his finger and thumb and gently lifted until her gaze met his. âIt is fine.â Then he leaned forward to brush a kiss across her cheek. With his lips almost close enough to touch her skin, he added. âAre you so eager to be in my arms again? Do you want to . . . test out the guest room? Or your childhood bed?â
He had the intended effect. She shivered and licked her lips. âYou are so bad!â
âYou are the one protesting our brief separation.â Mitsuhide pressed another kiss to her cheek and leaned back.
She crossed her arms. âYouâre right. Itâs just a few nights. But when we get back to the city -â a wicked smile turned her lips up at the corners, promising all sorts of fun.
âSo forward, my little mouse. So eager. You make me wish we were home already.â
âThatâs the idea.â She turned and threw him a saucy look. âSomething to dream about.â
Mitsuhide chuckled. âGood night, little one.â Something to dream about indeed. He watched her hips as she walked down the hall, until she turned into her room and shut the door. She really had no idea what impact she had on him. He wondered if it was his practiced art of hiding his true emotion, or simply that she couldnât see how beautiful she was. How desirable.
He went into the room and shut the door. It was so strange. The electronic hum of household devices. The cold fluorescent light from the street lamps in his window. Distant traffic sounds blending with barking dogs and strains of music. Mitsuhide felt suddenly very alone and very out of place.
Despite his refusal, the thought of spending one night, much less three, without his little one, felt impossible. A burden too heavy for him to bear. He needed to feel her in his arms, to fall asleep to the sound of her breathing, the beat of her heart. Her warmth grounded him in this strange place.
Mitsuhide gave a dry, soundless laugh. Who was the little mouse now?
Slowly, meditatively, he dressed for bed and lay down. He would embrace this world, different as it was from his own. He had to, because it was the one that gave birth to his beloved. And so, listening to the heartbeat of this small town, the viscous thrum of modern life, he drifted into an uneasy sleep.
Miyake and Sasuke arrived the following day at lunch. They met up at a local restaurant. Youko was friends with the owner and able to borrow a few tables in the back for privacy.
Minoru, the chatelaineâs often grumpy father, seemed to be on his best behavior. Not smiling, but distantly polite to the two newcomers. He thawed a little when his daughter threw her arms around each of the men in greeting.
No one said much as they ate. Youko and Minoru sat beside their daughter on one side of the table, glancing up at her strange friends. Sasuke, Mitsuhide and Miyake sat across from them, looking nervous.
It was Sasuke who finally broke the silence. He cleared his throat. âI understand your daughter told you about our time in the Sengoku. Understandably, you want proof. You have questions. We are here to give you what evidence we can.â
Minoru snorted. âWhat do you get out of this charade?â He gestured to Mitsuhide. âIs he paying you?â
Miyake looked as if he wanted to speak up, but Sasuke beat him to it. âNo. I am here because your daughter is my friend.â He reached into his bag. âI know it isnât much, but I brought my ninja kit as proof. These - these are smoke pellets. And that is a kunai. This is a sleeping poison, and this -â he went through the items, explaining what they were and how he made them. Detailed descriptions of the tools and materials he had available.
When Sasuke finished, Minoru looked thoughtful.
Youko smiled across as Sasuke. âYou seem a very resourceful young man. And you are also the one that discovered these wormholes?â
âYes maâam.â Sasuke dipped his head, embarrassed by the compliment.
âIt could just be you have a - a fascination with this stuff. Read a lot. Saw some movies,â Minoru said. His gruff voice held more than a hint of doubt. Even he didnât buy his own explanation.
Sasuke nodded. âI could have. But even that would not yield the encyclopedic knowledge Iâve developed. I would go into greater detail, but I imagine you donât have the underlying historical education to make use of most of the information I could provide. Unless . . . Are you a history buff?â His voice sounded different at the end, as if this question was important. Light glinted off his glasses, hiding his eyes. The air around him was charged, almost crackling with a sudden and unexpected energy.
âNo. I canât say I am,â Minoru replied.
âHm, too bad.â The strange tension in the ninja disappeared as suddenly as it came.
Mitsuhide nudged Miyake. The warrior muttered something under his breath and then rolled his shoulders. âAlright, old man. I donât blame you for doubting us. Iâd think I was crazy too, or lying. But what Lady Akechi told you is true. Sheâs been living with my lord for the last few months. And itâs a good thing too. He smiles a lot more now. Eats too, and sleeps almost like a human.â
âMiyake,â Mitsuhide growled. âThatâs not the kind of evidence they need to hear.â
âSorry, but itâs the truth. And if you donât mind me saying, well, even if you do, your daughter makes for one hell of a princess. She makes the servants happy to do a good job because she notices the little things. And the guards . . . theyâd all die for her, and not just because Lord Akechi demands it. Sheâs kind and good to all of us. I donât get to spend time at the castle, but I hear how she remembers birthdays and congratulates newlyweds and -â
Youko laughed, a sound Mitsuhide recognized. Much like his own little one, but matured. More elegance with just the same amount of joy. âIt sounds like you have a following,â she smiled at her daughter.
The chatelaine blushed. âI really donât. Heâs exaggerating, mom. Really.â
âHe is not,â Mitsuhide chided. âThough I donât think thatâs the kind of proof her father -â
Minoru interrupted, his gruff voice quieting the table. âItâs clear youâve gotten to know her. My little girl.â He gave her a brief smile. âI am still . . . itâs a lot to take in. This wild story. But she stands by it and there is clearly - something true in it.â
His daughter hugged him. âI knew youâd come around, papa.â
He dislodged himself from her unexpected embrace. âI didnât say Iâm buying the whole story. Just,â he waved his hand, âsome of it rings true.â
The tension at their table eased, and conversation began to flow more naturally. Youko and Minoru had a lot of questions, and were finally ready to hear the answers.
***
Kyubei followed Ranmaru through the thick forest undergrowth, barely able to make out the dirt path he led them down. This was supposed to lead to a safe house, one that Kennyo agreed to meet him in. He wished the demon-abbot had a taste for teahouses instead of abandoned forest shacks, but it could be worse.
He could be with Hideyoshi, hunting Motonari across the ports. Kyubei wasnât afraid of pirates, but being on a boat . . . the constant roll of the ocean waves made him sick as a dog. No matter how many trips he made, he never gained any kind of tolerance for the motion. So this, the dirt and the bugs and the thick air under the trees, was a better deal all around.
âThis is it.â Ranmaru stopped just before the path opened on a small clearing. There was a half-rotted shack ahead, once a shrine to some local deity, now fallen into disrepair.
Kyubei was surprised to see he wasn'tâ the only one here to speak to the monk. Another familiar figure sat on the wooden steps outside the shrine. âShingen?â
Takeda grinned up at him, pushing a lock of sweaty hair out of his face. âIf it isnât Mitsuhideâs maid!â He laughed. âKidding, kidding! I just expected to see the kitsune out here himself.â
âHe is otherwise engaged.â
âIs he?â Shingenâs smile was dangerous now. âThis wouldnât have anything to do with our missing ninja, would it?â
âIf it does, Iâll send him your head,â Yukimura spoke up from somewhere to Kyubeiâs left.
Ranmaru put his hands up, laughing as if this were all so silly. âItâs too early for threats. Come on! Letâs make some tea and relax. The abbot will be here shortly.â
Kyubei turned his head a fraction, just enough to see Yukimura lower his spear. âTea would be good.â He ignored the younger warriorâs scowl as he followed Ranmaru to the shrine.
He didnât sit, but stood near Takeda, resting his back against a tree.
Shingen, for his part, pretended to be fully relaxed. It wasnât quite effective though. His brow held a waxy sheen, his eyes looked sunken and fevered. Worse, his breathing was labored. A rasp, harsh as a winter cough.
Kyubei watched him carefully. This was a bad situation. A dying man had fewer qualms than one that had to live with his decisions. He hadnât realized Takeda was so bad off though, despite the reports heâd received. The Tiger of the Kai was legend. Not a man to be taken down by sickness. And yet.
âDonât get any ideas,â Yukimura snapped, coming to stand beside his lord.
Shingen chuckled. âSo protective, Yuki.â His laugh turned into a thick, unproductive cough. When he finally got control of himself, he directed his attention to Kyubei. âSo. Where did your lord and my ninja go off to? And donât tell me you donât know. Thereâs too much tying their disappearance together. Iâd rather not have to kill you today for lying to me.â
Another situation he wished he had his lordâs guidance. What information was safe to pass along, and what plans would the ripples of this conversation affect? Kyubei swallowed. âI suspect they have gone to visit the chatelaineâs home. 500 years in the future.â
Shingen nodded as if this was the answer he expected. âSasuke asked me if Iâd like to visit his hometown. He said - he said they could cure me.â
âAnd then he left without you.â Yukimura punched the shrine wall, causing the whole building to tremble.
Ranmaru poked his head out. âHey! Careful or youâll bring the whole thing down on my head!â
âSorry,â Yukimura growled.
âIf it is any consolation, I donât believe Lord Akechi or Sarutobi left when they did intentionally. The information my lord left indicates the trip was meant to take place later. He was still . . . putting things in place for his extended absence.â
âThatâs bull,â Yukimura grumbled, but he relaxed his grip on the spear.
They had no more time to talk it over as Kennyoâs shadow fell across the clearing. He came out of the trees like a spirit, the rings on his staff clinking. âIt appears you found me. Again.â
Shingen grinned. âWell, old friend, I did have to hunt through every abandoned shrine in the province to get to this one.â
Kennyo snorted in disbelief.
âRanmaru brought me,â Kyubei bowed. âIt is a pleasure to see you again.â
âI have little time or patience for guests. Tell me what you want.â Kennyo crossed his arms.
âYour help with the false emperor.â Kyubei didnât look up from his bow. âWe both know Ashikaga is dead. The scribe we set up in his place, or the men around him, have gone astray.â
âI could care less. Let the exiled shogun harass the devil-king. Nobunaga and his pawns can go to hell.â Kennyoâs eyes were dark and full of anger. It radiated from him like heat from a fire.
Shingen shrugged. âYeah, sure. I hate him too. But itâs not just him getting hit. These idiot daimyos in his retinue are conscripting farmers. Villagers. Innocent folk that should be left out of a power grab.â
The demon abbotâs eyes fell on his old friend. âAnd you believe this is a worse fate than what the Oda have in store for them?â
âI do.â Shingenâs gaze didnât waver.
Kennyoâs shoulders shook and it took Kyubei a moment to realize the abbot was laughing. He shook his head. âYou always were a fool, Shingen. But fine. I will tell you what I know. I donât think you can stop what has been set in motion.â

@greencaped
Thereâs sound of small footfalls echoing through the Greenleaf palace at an unforgivable hour of the morning. Motonari had just fallen asleep at his desk, Takamoto noted as he passed. Papa really needed to learn that his desk was not a bed.
But he would let papa sleep for now. He had a different target this morning.
Another turn down another hall and he was at the room he wanted. The door slid open slowly, a mess of hair peaking in through the opening.
Uncle Oki was still asleep.
Goooooooood.
He tiptoed in, sliding the door shut behind him softly. Holding a small basket over his head, the boy slid his feet across the floor, cautious of any noise his feet would make if he took proper steps.Â
Finally at the warlordâs bed, Takamoto set his flower basket down and sat on the floor, taking whatever pieces of hair wasnât trapped under Okiâs head gently in his hands.Â
And then he started to braid, weaving flowers into the mess of green.Â

A Mermaid Princess and A Pirate King
Separated and Face to Face with the Enemy
The next morning, I awoke to utter chaos. The sound of cannons blasting and the acrid smell of smoke and gun power filled the air. Screams were sounding from the citizens of Aki as everyone ran for cover.
I opened my window to look outside and saw that it looked just as bad as it sounded. It was this moment that Hideyoshi and Mitsunari were coming into my room. "Thank goodness you're alright, Ava." Hideyoshi said.
"Do we have any idea what's going on?" I asked, closing the window.
"We aren't sure who is in charge of the attack, but we'll be finding out." Hideyoshi replied.
"But first I'll be escorting you to some place safe to hide until this is over." Mitsunari said.
"I can't hide." I countered. "Not when I know people are suffering."
"AvaâŚ" Hideyoshi began to protest.
Before I could retort, Shojumaru was running into the room just then. "My lordâŚand princess I am sorry, but I had to come in here."
"What is it, Shojumaru?" Hideyoshi asked.
"I've just received word from my contacts, this attackâŚit's being led by that scoundrel, Motonari Mouri!" Shojumaru declared. "Please, you have to help my city?"
"Of course we will." Hideyoshi answered. "I was just getting ready to head a team to suppress the chaos."
"And I am to be taking Lady Ava some place safe." Mitsunari replied.
"Please, my lord, with Motonari leading this attackâŚI fear we will need both of you." Shojumaru replied.
"See, Hideyoshi, you are BOTH needed." I said. "And as I already said, I am not hiding. I'll take a few guards and help with the evaciation of citizens. Set up a medical relief tent outside of the city to treat the wounded."
Hideyoshi seemed to debate with himself a moment before letting out a sigh. "You're not backing down from this, are you?" He asked.
"Hell no." I answered. "I want to HELP people, remember?"
"Alright, you win." Hideyoshi replied. He directed some guards to escort me before turning to Shojumaru. "Alright, we'll be helping you."
Shojumaru bowed deeply. "Thank you so much my lords." He replied. He then turned to me as he came up. "And especially thank you, Princess. When this is over, I plan to make finding those herbs for you a top priority."
"Let's just all get through this, shall we?" I replied, giving him a smile. Hideyoshi, Mitsunari, and Shojumaru were departing. I was grabbing a few things and heading out with my handful of guards. As I exited the merchant house, I began to summon what remained of my powers, calling forth a storm. The city was on fire, burning badly.
People were hurt and they needed a healing rain. I would use what I had to help them. The rain soon began to fall as we made our way through the city.
We gathered as many civilians as we could, promising to lead them to safety.. As we were running past an alley, I heard a small child crying.
I turned around and headed to the alley, kneeling down beside a small boy. "Hey, where's your mama or your papa?" I asked him.
"IâŚI don'tâŚIâŚdon'tâŚknow." The boy answered. "WeâŚwe got separated."
The tears were falling hard from his eyes. I reached for him and scooped him up. "Let's get you somewhere safe and then we'll work on finding them." I told him.
He nodded and held onto me as we ran. Two of my guards caught up to us as we came out of the alley. "There you are, PrincessâŚ"
"Sorry, I heard this boy and knew he needed help." I replied.
They nodded and we were then taking off. As we joined the group of civilians we had gathered, a woman was coming up to me, her arms open wide. "Daikichi!" She exclaimed.
The boy in my arms turned. "Mama!" He exclaimed, reaching for her. I passed him off to her and the hugged. She looked at me. "Thank you, my lady."
"Think nothing of it. Besides, there's no time for that. We have to keep moving." I replied.
The woman nodded and then we were all running off. We were almost to the outskirts of the city when shots rang out. The guards began to fall to the ground with a thud. I turned and gasped as I saw a group of pirates mounted on horses.
"Grab the princess and kill the rest!" One of the men ordered.
"Princess you have to run!" One of the guards told me.
"Like hell I am!" I replied back. Clearly from the pirates' words they had come for me. I could use myself as a bargaining chip. Get the safety of the innocents and my guards then escape once I was far enough away with the pirates. If they took me out to seaâŚthat would be all the better for me.
I turned to the pirates. "Hey, you big uglies!"
They looked at me grinning. "Looks like the Cap'n was right."
"If I come with you without a fight, will you let everyone else here go?"
"We'd hate ta waste the bullets and time to kill all o' these people." The lead pirate said. "Sure, we'll spare 'em if ya come with us."
I nodded. "Fine. I'm your prisoner." I then turned to the guards. "Get these people out of here."
"But PrincessâŚ"
"That's an order!" I shouted. Though I wasn't really a princess to them, but Nobunaga had given me some authority. Not to mention, they had come to respect me on my own merits.
"AlrightâŚ" My guards replied reluctantly.
The pirates grinned as they came up to me. "Just ta make sure ya come quietlyâŚ"
I was expecting to be bound and probably gagged, nothing I couldn't get out of, but that wasn't what happened. Instead I felt a jab in my side. DIdâŚdid they just fucking drug me?! I thought as my vision began to blur.
"Can't believe the cap'n was so right 'bout this one." I heard the pirate say.
I managed to stay conscious long enough before a cloth bag was placed over my head. This was not at all what I had been expecting, My original escape plan would not work out now.
When I came to, the bag was pulled off of my head and I was blinded by a bright light. I could feel something hevy around my neck, heavy binding at my wrists, and binding at my ankles. I blinked as my eyes adjusted to the bright lighting. I realized I was standing on some kind of platform in the middle of a large open room.
The floor felt unsteady and the room seemed like it moved. There was also a pull I felt, one I would recognize anywhere. I was on a ship. Looks like a large foreign ship. It was then that I noticed everyone else in the room. Well dressed people some Japanese and some foreigners were all around. They were lifting hands and shouting out numbers in all different languages.
There were people that were clearly translators coming from the crowds and carrying up pieces of paper to a podium that was next to the platform I was stood on. Holy shit! I'm BEING SOLD!
Being on a shipâŚat sea should have been an advantage for me. It should have helped me, but I'd already used a lot of my power in the last few days. Not to mention the heavy weight that I had feltâŚthe binding were FUCKING IRON CHAINS! Iron chains were a weakness for me.
I looked around the room, trying to figure out who I hoped would buy me. Who might I be able to charm into letting me out of my chains? Who might I be able to fight and escape into the sea? It was then that I caught sight of a familiar figure.
I'd recognize that white hair and sun-kissed skin anywhere! I thought as my eyes came to lock with a blood red gaze. Shojumaru! He gave me a friendly smile and wave. Then he lifted up and called out a bid that shocked the room. My eyes widened, but no one even tried to contest or outbid him.
Afterwards, I was led off the platform and to a lavish and private room elsewhere on the ship. Moments later, Shojumaru was coming in, carrying a key. "Thank goodness I was able to find you, Princess." He said, undoing the chains that bound my wrists and ankles, freeing them.
I rubbed at my wrists. "Yes, thank you so much." I said, breathing a sigh of relief. "How did you even know where to find me?"
"I've heard some nasty rumors about business Motonari Mouri trades in." Shojumaru answered. "I was afraid that if he had youâŚthat this is what he would have done."
I looked at Shojumaru then. "You sure know a lot about Motonari."
"When you do business in his home land of Aki, you tend to learn what you can so you know to stay away." Shojumaru replied. "But I couldn't stay away when I learned you had been taken, my lady. I knew I had to help in any way I could."
"Well, thank you for helping me. I really am grateful." I replied. Though I couldn't deny that something felt off about what he was saying. Sure they were natural responses, butâŚthe also felt rather perfectly crafted.
Shojumaru's eyes were sharp as he looked at me. "Something troubles you, my lady?" He asked.
"Just wondering why a merchant would be so willing to help the Oda forcesâŚso willing to help the Oda princess." I replied. "Hideyoshi said that you acted as a go-between for the Oda forces and the Mouri in negotiating the peace treaty."
"Aye, I just wanted to help bring peace." He replied. "Peace to Aki would make my business much easier."
"I see the logic in that." I replied. Though I couldn't deny that it felt too convenient. It also felt too convenient that Shojumaru seemed to know exactly where and how to find me.
"You still seem troubled, my lady." Shojumaru probed further.
"I justâŚthis seem awfully convenient." I replied. I wasn't entirely sure of what I was hinting atâŚall I knew was something felt off. "You suspect something, Princess?" He asked.
"YesâŚyes I do." I answered. "You're hiding something Shojumaru."
Something flashed in Shojumaru's ruby eyes. He flashed me a wicked grin and grabbed the chain that was still around my neck. "Heh, yer smarter than ya look, m'lady." He replied, as he yanked me closer by my chain. "Ya got one thing wrong, though."
My eyes widened as they met his. It was then that a historical tidbit came back to my mind. Motonari's name as a child before his coming of age ceremony. "YouâŚyou're Motonari!"
He laughed. "Didn't think ya'd be able ta put it together there, Princess. Nor did I think ya'd be able ta do it so fast."
I glared hard at him. "You bastard. You planned this."
"Course, I did." Motonari replied. "Ya might wanna watch what ya call me though. Don't wanna go pissin' yer master off now do ya?"
"I have no master."
He grinned at me and let go of the heavy chain, it dropping and causing me to lurch forward ever so slightly. "Yer still pretty fiery fer someone in your position."
"I've been through worse." I replied. "Yer betrothal mark, ya mean." Motonari said, inclining his head toward my left wrist.
"Excuse me?" I asked, my eyes wide.
"Don't think I didn't notice, Princess." Motonari replied. "I been at sea a long time. You ain't the first fish girl I run into."

My Pirate Lord and Our Life Ch. 59
Chapter 59
The next day, it was still relatively early in the morning. I was sitting on the veranda with Motonari, leaning against him and his arm was wrapped around me. We were still in our night robes, having just finished breakfast and just relaxing together. Well, relaxing as much as I could anyways. I was fidgeting a bit and restless.
"Ya alright?" Motonari asked me, his hand going to rub my back.
"Yeah, I just can't really get comfortable." I answered.
Motonari kissed the top of my head. "Anything I can do to help?"
I shook my head. "I think this is just how it is till the baby is born." I adjusted my position once again, stretching my legs out in front of me and continuing to lean against Motonari.
He turned so that I was between his outstretched legs and resting back against his chest. He then wrapped both arms around me, hugging me close. He rested a hand on my belly. As if in response, the baby started kicking right under his hand.
"Can't tell if he's tellin' me ta get off or not." Motonari said with a laugh.
"I think the baby is just saying hi papa." I replied, smiling.
"Not like they can tell it's me." Motonari replied.
"Hmm, they can hear you though." I spoke. "By the time they get here, they can already know the sounds of the voices of their parents...and anyone else who is around regularly."
âThatâs interestinâ.â Motonari mused.
It was then that our peaceful morning was disturbed. There was the sound of clatter coming from somewhere inside and then Kenshin was surprisingly bursting from ne of the rooms next to ours. Yukimura was close behind him, as well as Kanetsugu.
âYukimura told me there was likely to be a battle here in just a couple of days. You dared try to keep me from it.â Kenshin said, glaring at Motonari.
âA battle? Here?â I asked, starting to feel panicked.
Motonari glared at Kenshin.
âLord Kenshin will you please calm down?â Yukimura asked. âAnd clearly, youâve upset Ava. Jeez, how does Sasuke do this?â
âClearly someone was trying to keep my lord from battle.â Kanetsugu said. âSomething that shouldnât be ignored.â
I turned in Motonariâs arms to face him. âWhatâs going on?â
He lifted a hand to my cheek. âI was planninâ on tellinâ yaâŚjust a little later.â He replied, shooting a glare at Kenshin. âAnd I wasnât tryinâ ta keep ya outta it. Just tryinâ to keep some peace in my damn castle for mâlady.â
âTell me when and where and Iâll be there. Iâve grown bored with all of this peace.â Kenshin replied before striding off.
Hiroyoshi showed up to take them all to rooms they could be staying in. Motonari was sighing before turning back to me, his crimson-eyed gaze gentle. âThis wasnât at all how I planned on ya findinâ out.â He said, gently stroking my cheek with his thumb.
I could see the worry and concern in his eyes as he looked at me. âWhatâs going on?â
He let out a sigh before kissing me on the forehead. âYou remember how I said I didnât trust Akari and didnât like that she was still hanginâ around town?â
I nodded. Bristling a bit at her name. Though I knew I had no reason to be jealous and Motonari had very thoroughly assured me I was the only one he wanted, I still couldnât help but to feel jealous.
âTurns out sheâs workinâ with someone else I used to know.â Motonari said. âReal nasty sort of guyâŚthey got a plan. Not sure exactly what they wantâŚâ
âBut what?â I asked.
Motonari sighed as he leaned his forehead against mine. âI swear, Iâll keep ya both safe.â He said.
I could see the frown on his face. The concern, but also determination in his eyes. âMotonari, what is it?â
âThey plan on tryinâ to sneak in and take youâŚuse ya to force my handâŚta do what I donât know, but I ainât lettinâ âem take ya.â He answered. âI ainât ever lettinâ anyone do what that bastard Yoshiaki did again.â
âWhat? When?â
Motonari stroked my cheek in a reassuring manner. âTheir plan is to sneak in durinâ the partyâŚbut we got a plan ta stop âem tomorrow night.â
âWhyâŚwhy didnât you tell me sooner?â I asked.
âCoz ya got enough ta worry about.â Motonari answered. âAnd I didnât want ta stress ya outâŚdidnât want ya worryinâ coz Iâm gonna take care of it. Iâm gonna keep ya safe.â
I could see that he really was concerned. He really was just trying to keep my stress levels down. He was worried about my health. I reached both of my hands up to hold his face. âI know youâll keep us safe.â I assured him. âI never doubt thatâŚI never doubt you.â
Motonari lifted his hand and gently grabbed one of my wrists, turning his head to kiss the palm of my hand. âYa give me more than I deserve.â He said.
I smiled at him. âYouâve not given me any reason to doubt you so far, so why should I start now?â
Motonari smiled at me. "I'm sorry I didn't tell ya sooner...I just...I'm worried 'bout ya." He admitted.
"I know." I replied. "Just...tell me sooner if this ever happens again. I'm not as fragile as you think."
"Oh, I know better than anyone ya ain't some fragile little princess." He replied, a playful smirk on his face.
"So...is that the real reason everyone is here early?" I asked.
Motonari nodded. "Yeah...I could handle the threat on my own...but it don't hurt ta have backup...'specially when it comes to protectin' my family...if nothin' else I know that mother o' yers will fight tooth and nail ta keep ya safe."
I laughed. "Brother." I corrected. "Though he did definitely about cry over me last night like a mother."
Motonari laughed and gently kissed me lips. "Come on, we'd better be gettin' ready. Pretty sure that crazy God o' War woke up the rest of the castle."
"Probably." I Agreed.
Motonari stood up and then reached both if his hands out to me, helping me up. We went into our room and changed for the day. I went to go tell Misa and the others about what was going on while Motonari headed to the council room to discuss further details of the plan with the Oda forces and fill Kenshin in on the plan.
The girls and I gathered in Misa's room. Kotoro was running about the castle playing with the maids' children. "So, what in the hell is going on, Ava?" Misa asked.
I sighed. "Apparently...there's a plan to sneak into the castle and kidnap me and use me to force Motonari's hand." I explained.
"What?!" They all exclaimed together.
"You know, this shit wouldn't happen if you wouldn't have decided to marry a pirate warlord, right?" Misa remarked.
I shot her a glare. "Don't worry everything will be fine. Motonari and everyone has a plan to keep us all safe."
"And what is this plan?" Misa asked.
"I don't know." I answered. "But I trust that the plan will work. I've seen all of these guys in battle. I've seen their plans in action. I know they work. I've already been kidnapped enough and I know Motonari wants to make sure that never happens again. Having to shoot me once was more than enough for him."
"MOTONARI SHOT YOU?!" They all three exclaimed.
I sighed. "Dammit, I really gotta stop letting stuff slip." I then went on to explain the situation we had been put in my the Shogun and Kicho.
"So...basically your original sewing case was used as a bullet proof vest?" Kimi asked.
I nodded. "Basically."
Misa was shaking her head. "I knew I should have insisted harder for you to get your head examined when we were home." She then let out a sigh. "But I can clearly see that the man loves you...and honestly I kinda don't feel surprised at this point anymore."
"Yeah, the more I find out the less shocking it all becomes...but then I also question your taste in men." Asuna remarked.
"Trust me I questioned myself in the beginning too...but you know the heart wants what it wants." I replied.
Motonari...
After explaining the plan to Kenshin, Motonari was turning to Nobunaga. "I got one request for ya." He said.
"What is it?" Nobunaga asked, carnelian eyes looking sharply at Motonari.
"Have Hideyoshi be in charge o' the portion of our joint forces that's stayin' behind." Motonari replied.
"What? How can you make that kind of request?" Hideyoshi asked. "I should be at Lord Nobunaga's side to be sure to protect him!"
"Hideyoshi." Nobunaga commanded.
Hideyoshi instantly clammed up. "Yes, my lord?"
"Motonari is right. You are best fit to stay behind." Nobunaga declared. "You and Mitsunari shall stay."
Hideyoshi looked ready to argue, but held his tongue. "If that is your command my lord." He said with a bow.
They finished dealing out everyone's orders, dividing up who would be going where. Then the council was ending. As Motonari was exiting, Hideyoshi caught up to him. "Why?" Hideyoshi asked.
Motonari turned to him. He knew exactly what Hideyoshi was asking. "Why what?" He asked anyway.
"Why are you wanting me to stay behind?"
"Ain't it obvious?" Motonari asked.
"No. Unless you're planning to betray us and take Lord Nobunaga's life."
Motonari sighed. "This whole damn thing is 'bout protectin' Ava and the baby. 'Bout protectin' my family...keepin' 'em safe. Since I'm the naval battle expert, I gotta lead that fight. Which means I gotta leave the castle. I gotta have the only other person who loves Ava as much as I do here ta protect her."
Hideyoshi looked at Motonari a moment.
Motonari looked rather disgruntled as he rubbed the back of his neck in an annoyed manner. "Yer the only one I know I can trust ta protect her and keep her safe when I can't. Yer the one I trust to do that. Coz I know ya'd give up yer sword arm to protect her."
"Well...that...makes sense." Hideyoshi replied. "And don't worry, I will keep her safe."
"I know. That's why it's gotta be you since it can't be me."
The pair shared a look. Though they fought...a lot, Ava was important to them both. They were allies now and they would work together. They would keep Ava safe.
