Subtle Fantasy Colors from Overtone!

I normally don’t cover haircare products on TAB mainly because I’m natural and the natural hair blogging community is fairly well saturated. However, today’s feature is about color and actually goes well with the Pantone Color of the Year Ultra Violet, that I’ve been highlighting. Now when it comes to color, I’m no novice. I’ve been coloring my hair (or extensions) since about 2007/2008. I’ve done standard drug store/beauty supply box dyes, I’ve done Wella, BAQ henna rinses on my natural hair and my preferred ones which I’ve been doing since about 2013 are actually color rinses rather than dyes. I’ll dig deeper on that in a bit (yes, this will be a bit of a long post) but let’s just say although I’m not a licensed beautician or anything, I understand the mechanics of dying hair. And long before fantasy colors were trending, I was dabbling in that world with navy, teal, dark green, fuchsia, and purple thanks to process friendly rinse (NOT dye) brands like Manic Panic and Creative Image Adore.

In the past two to three years, fantasy hair colors (i.e. pastels, gray, rainbow hair, etc) have trended across Instagram and in the mainstream beauty space. If you’re unfamiliar with dying hair and especially what it means to “lift” hair, here’s the crash course. It’s very easy and literally a one step process (typically) to go darker than your natural hair shade because you’re only depositing color - just add the dye or rinse to your hair and you’re done. It takes more work and processing to go lighter. If you want a clearly visible lighter hair color (i.e. pastels or vibrant bold hues) on your current dark hair, you need to bleach first (developer + bleach powder) to at least a strawberry or honey blonde shade and then deposit color. And depending on how much lighter you’re trying to go from your natural hair shade, you may need to use some pretty strong developer which comes ranging from 10 to 40 with 40 being the most intense lifting power. If you just want something subtle, you can deposit a dye or rinse and depending on your starting color you may end up with something visible under low light or under sunlight (depending on the strength of the rinse/dye).

As a general rule, aside from when I used to apply BAQ henna to my hair and scalp when I was newly natural, I DO NOT color or do any kind of chemical processing to my natural hair. When I want to wear a new hair color, I turn to extensions and full lace wigs. And because I love to do an ombre from a natural-ish dark brown/brown-black shade into some form of fantasy color, it means that when rocking colorful wigs/extensions, I always have to first bleach using 20 developer to the ends and then deposit the color. I use a 20 developer because it lifts enough in one application for me to see visible results but I don’t have to be concerned about over processing. Why? Because if you’re buying extensions they’ve already been processed somehow unless you buy truly virgin hair - which tends not to be in typical African American textures. So, when I buy an Italian Yaki or Coarse Yaki unit in natural brown, there’s at least one texturizing process that’s already been applied. Bleaching it means at least a 2nd process and actual dye rather than a rinse would be a 3rd process. The more you process hair, the more you damage it and reduce the life of a unit. And if you’re doing a home color job, it’s best to be as gentle as possible to prevent over processing and damaging the hair (especially if it’s the hair growing out of your scalp).

I say all this to say, Overtone offered to send me samples of their hair color and after doing a bit of researching and learning that it was a rinse and not a dye, I was hyped to check them out. They sent me their Extreme Purple deep treatment and the Extreme Purple daily conditioner as well. The deep treatment is the rinse which will deposit the initial color and the daily conditioner basically acts as a touch up to condition while maintaining the color of the hair. They also sent me a tester amount of their rose gold deep treatment but I currently don’t have any units light enough for the color to even appear and I didn’t feel like bleaching anything. So, I’ve tabled that experiment for the moment. I actually did this color project right before NYE for NYE and my baby shower. But if you follow my on Tales of a Mommy 2 Be, or either of my IG accounts, you know that I’ve been rocking my natural hair almost exclusively for the last 2 months. So, this weekend I washed and conditioned the unit I colored using Overtone’s conditioner - and am now rocking the new look as you see above.

Now, one thing I really loved about Overtone’s FAQs is that they were very honest about what results you could expect to achieve. For instance, they make it clear that if you apply their rinse over previously colored hair (especially a fantasy color), you may not end up with the shade you purchased from them (i.e. adding red rinse over previously colored blue hair can get you purple). And they specifically noted that because it’s a depositing rinse and not a dye, if you’re brunette or darker, unless you bleach your hair prior to applying their colors, you may be left with a more subtle color. The reason I bring this up is because one, it’s important to manage expectations especially for hair color newbies. And two, there are other brands out here lying to people saying they can lift brunette and dark hair to super light fantasy colors without the use of bleach - and this just isn’t chemically possible. Looking at you Lime Crime with your Dark Unicorn dye.

Anywho, back to my experience. So, I have lots of wigs lying around and I opted to pull out an oldie but goodie to test the Overtone color. I chose an Italian Yaki wig I’ve had for about 3 years now and one where I originally bleached & dyed the ends using a teal shade from the Adore rinse line but that ended up depositing as this awesome forest green shade (see collage). I loved this color because I bought this wig for my trip to Seoul and Tokyo years ago and it was just an awesome unit! I even touched it up many times to keep that awesome green shade. But it was time for a change as the unit was now faded to bleach blonde ends, a sad looking greenish middle and the untouched natural brown roots. Now, because I was going to use a unit that had been previously colored, I already knew a few things:

Rich fantasy colors from Adore don’t fully rinse out no matter how hard you wash - even after washing the hair twice with Dawn dish soap (a beauty hack to strip color!).

Because they don’t fully rinse out, as vibrant as that purple hue from Overtone was, the likelihood that the end result would be that Extreme Purple was 50-50.

So, knowing these things, I was really open to seeing what would come of this project and I wasn’t going to be angry if the color wasn’t awesome. I applied color from the ends up to a little bit higher than where the green had been placed to ensure that the green would be completely covered. However, to hedge my bets, I did put the wig in a plastic bag and then left it in my cap blow dryer on high for about 20 - 30 minutes to help the color penetrate better. (Note: the blow dryer trick can work on anyone. If you’re dying your real hair, you can just cover with a plastic cap or bag and the heat off your head will help to make the color penetrate better).

What I Love About Overtone:

The Deep Treatment is actually really thick like a slightly goopy paste, making it easy to apply. The color sticks to where it needs to be and it’s not messy like when I usually use my Adore rinses which are very runny. I recommend using a tinting/color brush versus your hands so that you can be more precise.

The smell is divine, it’s minty fresh. Now, I don’t mind Adore rinses either because it’s not funky. But Overtone knocked it out of the park with that scent. I was able to apply this while my husband was home without him complaining about the smell.

Although I’m not vegan, it is a vegan friendly product which is also sulfate free.

Rinsing out with Overtone was WAY easier than when I use Adore. Adore rinses (for as long lasting as they are) never fully rinse out. You’ll stand there for 30 minutes trying to wash that rinse out of the hair. And every time you wash your hair afterwards...yup you’ll see color in the water. Overtone clearly deposited color, but didn’t stain my sink (I used the stainless steel kitchen sink just to be safe because I’ve definitely accidentally dyed my bathtub a time or two!).

Even though I didn’t get that Extreme Purple hue, I did get an obvious color change, which lets me know that this product is a strong color depositing rinse. That makes it a very good alternative to traditional hair dyes.

After washing and using their Extreme Purple Daily Conditioner, very little color rinsed out and my navy hue still looked very vibrant.

What Could Be Better:

Honestly, nothing. I like that they’re truthful on their website about potential results. I liked how easy this was to apply and that it wasn’t stinky. And most importantly I liked that even though I didn’t end up with a purple color, I still had a clear color change.

The Results:

As you can see in the opening post pic and in the one immediately above, it’s not really purple, except for at the very ends of my hair which were faded to a true blonde. However, the color I got, I LOVE because it’s everyday wearable. As much as I love bright fantasy shades, the reality is that I do have corporate clients I consult with - it’s not okay to go into meetings with bright pink or purple hair. I’ve been trying to do brown into navy ombre for a while but truth be told, Adore’s Royal Navy rinse would always deposit as teal on dyed blonde hair. For whatever reason, the previous Adore teal rinse mixed perfectly with Overtone’s Extreme Purple to create this beautiful subtle navy which is slightly visible, but isn’t shockingly bright. So, I give Overtone two thumbs up as they gave my beloved Italian Yaki unit new life!

Choose or invent colors that intensify your writing.

What is so special about Living Coral, Pantone 2019 color of the year?

Pantone color of the year is a peachy orange shade with a golden undertone, called living coral. (PANTONE 16–1546 TPX). It definitely feels more positive when compared to last year’s ‘Somber Ultraviolet’ or the 2016 ‘Rose Quartz’ and ‘Serenity’ that today looks so dated. It is also closer to the 2012 ‘Tangerine Tango’ color that today feels too bight and popular ‘Rose Gold’ color. The vibrant ‘Gen Z yellow’ was would have been another contender for this spot, but was overlooked in favor of this color. Living Coral will certainly inspire trendsetters and early adopter designers. It will influence product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, industrial design, digital product design, packaging, and graphic design. Dulux also launched its 2019 color of the year recently and opted for a versatile and warm shade called ‘Spiced Honey’. This is also an indication that there is a trend to return to raw, natural and earthy shades.

So what makes this color so special?

There is a trend to lean towards social and environmental concerns, particularly in GenZ. Fresh tones create harmony between humans, nature, and technology. Generally, a color with a gender-neutral appeal feels contemporary and helps point to higher human aspirations greater than oneself. This is an age of intense reaction and response due to social media. Unheard, unseen issues and topics can be easily brought to the forefront. Living Coral is likely to do its part to draw attention to environmental issues corals are facing today.

There is more to this color that Pantone has not articulated. It is beyond the connections with coral reefs in nature and the concept of fusing technology with nature. This logic seems too stretched but if it brings environmental awareness and starts conversations, it will be worth it. Any nod to nature, environmental concerns, and climate change is a contemporary point of view welcomed everywhere in the world. Frankly, shades of green are closer to nature compared to shades of orange or reds. Living coral does feel cheerful and warm but so are other shades of red and orange. There is energy in such shades that make any design vibrant. This color does bring to mind feelings of recreation, leisure, and celebration.

Colors are a reflection of our culture and contemporary point of views. Selection of a color is also not done in isolation but there is always a design language. There is always a context to the color and a combination of the colors to express in a design.

With great color, comes great responsibility

Designers carry a much larger responsibility as influencers when it comes to colors. Many designers around the world will be using this color extensively this year to create a trend in fashion, retail, packaging and other areas of design. It will be interesting to see how designers would express this color in a relationship with other colors in their cultures. It is generally a race where everyone simply follows when influencers set the trend with their color choices, schemes, and combinations. Ever

This color makes a statement

Nature is the source of energy. With so much digital noise around us, a color that seems authentic and helps establish human emotional connections of warmth, optimism, nourishment, comfort, lightheartedness, and buoyancy is a refreshing change.

Good brand identity systems carry a bright, interesting accent color for a designer to judiciously use it in the design and make it come to life. Majority of the times, brand identity color schemes are neutral, timeless, and safe color schemes. Clients are unwilling to take a big risk and use a bold color. This color generally looks good in small doses. It makes for a good accent color and is a contrasting color. It gives a boost of energy to an otherwise serious, cold and isolating color palette. It contrasts and balances very well with cooler tones of green and blue. Living coral and cactus green is an interesting contrast even we visualize a cactus plant against a wall of living coral color. Living coral color can also work for outdoor furniture placed between a green dominated natural environment. Tiffany blue and living coral also make a good combination. Another good combination is when it is paired with 2013’s Color of the Year Emerald,

Prints and accents are a great way to break up the color. Outfits in this color will be vibrant. Whites in the primary palette will help tone it down if needed. Neutrals on the other hand help contrast its brightness in outfits. Designers will have to compliment this color with very strong neutrals as well as primary shades. When used with mid-tones and happy pastels, it will be influencing color systems to go warmer and lighter.

This color complements all skin tones across all ages, genders, and ethnicity and thus works well in fashion and accessories. The delightful applications of this color will be beyond fashion, social media influencer posts and consumer packaging. Some areas of product design still need a fresh infusion of delight and energy. Many machines and tools are still produced in the traditional machine green or grey colors and it is time for a change. Medical devices too could use some of this color.

This color is spiritual

It is said that our mind does not really need colors. It can do with black, white and greys. They are enough to understand contrast and variations in our thought process. However, our heart or the emotional being needs colors to have rich life experiences. Specific colors relate to specific emotions and aspects of our senses. Women have a better sense of colors because their heart chakra is more elevated than men and thus we find women taking an extra time and effort in choosing their clothes with best color combinations or wearing makeup. An emotionally rich color like living coral will find more customers in women compared to men.

Pantone Living Coral contains a mix of red, yellow and white that signifies positive emotional energy. It is friendly and soothing to the heart. Meditating on this color increases harmony and sense of fulfillment in us.

We perceive colors based on what is reflected from an object instead of what it holds back. So essentially color of an object is what it gives away and not what it actually is. This is also the nature of life and we are known for what we give to others. If a color evokes emotions of joy and warmth, it is holding back everything else. Joy and optimism do come through from this color also because of its spiritual connections.

According to Yoga, our body has chakras. During meditation when a yogi transcends from the heart chakra towards the third eye chakra, he may experience a shift in the colors. From the most vibrant red color to the color of enlightenment, saffron. Monks typically wear shades of this color. This shade of orange carries the energy of red in a subtle form but combined with wisdom, vision and a sense of detachment. This means the warmth and love this color expresses has transformed itself into a love without expectations and is universal. This is also the key to real happiness when we conduct our worldly affairs without attachments. This color is also a symbol of maturity in life. Adding white in this color makes a tint that communicates feelings of all-inclusiveness, comfort, and peace. Designers should use these properties of colors to exploit their healing energies and evoke certain emotions in users. Colors that we reflect are added to our aura. Some people wear white so that they do not add anything else on themselves and keep it clean.

The future is transparent

Online interactions are increasingly driven by technology and becoming cold. There is a need to humanize the interactions using authentic storytelling and conversational interfaces. We’re already moving from one-size-fits-all experiences towards individually tailored experiences where technology is adapted to individual user’s needs. There is no right or wrong colors in these experiences. Right or wrong can change based on the qualitative data from the user.

The future of color in UX is where experiences will no longer be forced on the users, but highly customized through AI and machine learning. Instead of the yearly color predictions, the AI of the digital product will figure out color preferences of a user and serve the experience in those color schemes. This would require brands to become more flexible and versatile in their design language. Maybe the color for the year 2021 is going to be a ‘transparent’ color. The pigment of personalization will transform it as per the user’s profile.

The one-dimensional color trends are also likely to cease in the future and trends will look into context, user and channel as key considerations for its selection. We may see more complex color combinations and color systems being released each year. The sophistication of color usage will lead to better visual experiences in the future for users.

Some questions still remain

The first question that comes to the mind is why is it announced before the start of the year? Should it not be announced at the end of the year, to sum up, the trends in colors seen globally? By announcing at the beginning of the year, is Pantone setting the yearly trend based on a pre-assigned color?

Can this color stand firm in both summer and winter weathers? It definitely seems to hold the fort in the spring season due to its energy.

While this color makes me want to go and have an island vacation this summer, I am Looking forward to seeing all the ways living coral will be used in 2019.

Heather loved the idea of her wedding arch also being used for their grand entrance out of the french doors of the farmhouse. However, the doors were a bit bigger than any arch available to rent so Michael built his bride an arch that fit the farmhouse door dimensions perfectly and also looked stunning for their ceremony! There wasn’t a dry eye in the crowd during their beautiful ceremony.

Michael and I met 10 years ago on the first day of our sophomore year in college and have been inseparable ever since. When Michael and I began planning our trip to Europe little did I know it would change my life forever! While visiting Paris Michael got down on one knee and asked me to spend forever with him, it was the best moment of my life! It was so great to get engaged while traveling as we were able to have that time together and just enjoyed being in the moment.

Shortly after we returned home we started touring up and down the coast of California looking at venues. We fell in love with Triunfo Creek Vineyards, it has an effortless charm to it that was simply undeniable and we couldn`t imagine a better setting for our special day.

Having dreamed of this day for so long I had a distinct view of what I wanted but I knew I was going to need some help to make it a reality. Sarah of Little Grey Events truly turned our special day into a fairy-tale. Sarah was not only our amazing planner but she was also the creator of our perfect bouquets and floral arrangements. She was so amazing to work with throughout the entire process and the day would not have been the same without her!

Everyone always tells you how fast the day will fly by and all you want when it’s done is to be able to relive it over and over again. Our photographer Brooke, from HoneyGem Creative, took the time to get to know us and our style, she became an extension of us, capturing all of the special moments of our day just the way we imagined them.

What was your wedding day theme?

Our theme was rustic elegance with a soft muted color pallet of lavender, aqua and white. We had fun with our last name, Wolff, and incorporated it into many aspects of our day from the invitations to the cake toppers.

Looking back, what are some of your favorite wedding day moments?

There were so many incredible parts to the day… among my favorites were our first look, hearing Michael say the vows he wrote (and when he closed the vow book and just spoke straight from the heart), and the drive after our exit where we reminisced on the most perfect night!
