Loft Conversion Specialists – Ensuring The Whole Process Is Quick and Easy
A loft conversion is a great idea for those needing more space in their home and makes better use of an existing room in your home before adding more.
You often don’t need planning permission to convert a loft, and a loft conversion is less expensive than moving to a larger house.
Extending into a loft provides extra living space without sacrificing a chunk of your garden. Use a loft conversion specialist for the job and you’ll be able to tap into a wealth of local planning, design and technical knowledge too.
Here are a few things to consider if you’re thinking of extending upwards.
Why hire a loft conversion specialist rather than an architect or general builder?
A specialist can offer end-to-end service, from plans and execution to build. It’s always good to go to a specialist, as it’s their everyday job and there is no disconnect between the design and the actual physical build.
Do loft conversion companies offer different levels of services?
Many companies offer a number of options, depending on how much help you need; like
Architectural only – Here ready drawings are produced for a client to hand to a contractor.
Build only – This service is provided to those clients who already have their own drawings and want someone to build for them.
Design and Build – This option is an all-round service, from concept to completion.
What happens at an initial consultation?
Most people tend to know what they want already, but the key is to add value by making the best possible use of their space.
It’s important to ask and not be prescriptive. A loft surveyor takes a design brief from the client and surveys the property internally and externally. The second briefing takes into account any design opportunities and constraints that have been highlighted by the survey.
Is there a need to take Planning Permission for a loft conversion?
Not always. In most cases, loft conversions tend to be considered Permitted Development, but your design will need to adhere to a number of specified parameters.
If you plan on extending beyond limits and conditions of Planning Permissions. You’ll also need Planning Permission if you are altering the roof height or shape.
Roof lights and dormer can be installed under Permitted Development, but they must not sit forward of the roof plane on the principal elevation, nor must they be higher than the highest part of the existing roof.
Which aspects of Building Regulations are most likely to impact a loft design?
When converting a loft, you’ll need Building Regulations approval. A building control surveyor will inspect your conversion at various stages and will be responsible for issuing a completion certificate upon final inspection.
If your home is semi-detached or terraced, then you’ll need to notify your neighbours of your planned work if it falls under the requirements of the Party Wall Act.
Also, you’ll need to take extra consideration to fire safety, insulation and the like.
How much does a loft conversion cost?
Room in Roof Loft Conversion Prices starts around £15,000 which is the cheapest and most straight forward option.
This will usually involve:
The reinforcement of the floor
A couple of skylights
Added insulation
A staircase to the loft
Electrics, lighting and heating
Fire safety measures to comply with Building Regulations such as fire doors and smokeless alarms
Your roof structure
Existing available space
Whether you need alterations in order to accommodate the staircase
These costs may be included in your quote from your builder, so it’s worth speaking to him in depth at the start of the project.
A standard single space conversion usually comes in somewhere between £22,000 to £35,000, if it’s to have a dormer window, cupboards in the evaes and en-suites bathroom etc.
Choosing a well-qualified company or a loft conversion specialist means you’ll get amazing builders that will ensure the whole process is quick and easy.

All You Need To Know About A Basic Loft Conversion
Thinking of adding more space to your home?
You can easily do that by going for a Basic Loft Conversion, which will not only add more space but is also affordable and adds value to your home.
According to the Federation of Master Builders, a loft conversion can add up to 20% to the total value of the property.
As most of the renovation work is done from outside, loft conversions are simple to carry out and causes very little disturbance.
What will you get with a Basic loft conversion?
Staircase to access the loft conversion.
Single bedroom with one or two Velux windows.
Are Planning Permissions and Building Warrants required?
Basic loft conversion with just Velux windows will not require Planning Permissions unless it’s in a conservation area or a listed building.
The main areas which require a Building Warrant are:
Fire
In the event of a fire, it’s really very important for you and your family to have a safe passage of exit.
Fire regulations are less onerous if the loft conversion is in a bungalow, as it’s not too high and you can exit through a window.
But in a 2 storey house, the level of fire protection for a loft conversion can be surpassed. For this kind of a situation, the stair enclosure is required to offer 30mins fire protection, all the doors require intumescent seals and existing upper floor ceilings will either need an extra layer of plasterboard or will need to be painted with an approved intumescent paint.
Structural
As most of the loft is attic, spaces are not designed to be “Habitable Spaces”, some modifications in the structure are invariably required. This will always require a structural engineer.
Most lofts can be converted with varying degrees of structural modifications.
Insulation
Whether it’s a basic loft conversion or a high-end loft conversion, the level of insulation for either one is the same.
A typical build-up of the sloping roof will be:
* 100 mm Kingspan insulation between the rafters
* 25 mm Kingspan over the rafters
* 30 mm service gap
* 12.5 mm plasterboard finish
Stairs
Again, whether it’s a basic loft conversion or a fancy one, building regulations are the same.
Stairs come in all shapes and sizes so you can easily get one which suits your budget.
For a Basic Loft Conversion, MDF or Redwood is fine.
Noise
The impact of noise can be reduced significantly by building a new floor in such a way that walls that divide your property with the next door will need to be constructed in accordance with the Building Standards, which covers both the airborne and impact noise.
Types of Loft Conversions:
Now that you have gained the basic idea about loft conversion, you should also know which type of conversion suits your space and budget. So here is a glimpse of different types of loft conversions:
Velux Loft Conversion:
It’s a design that uses Velux windows, which are installed into the pitch of the roof, and this allows light into the room.
It’s the most basic and cost-effective way of converting your loft.
Dormer Loft Conversion:
Another popular option for an extension to the existing roof that projects vertically from a sloping roof, creating additional floor space and headroom within the property.
Mansard Loft Conversion:
This loft conversion offers maximum space, the additional space created is tenfold, the required space for larger family rooms, bathrooms etc.
The mansard has a flat roof with the back sloping inwards at 72 degrees.
Hip-To-Glade Loft Conversion:
A popular option for many semi-detacheds or detached properties with a limited existing loft space, making it difficult to create a loft conversion without extending your property.
Now that you know about the requirements and variations in a Loft Conversion, you might have questions about the cost. So let’s find out a little more about it.
How much does a basic loft conversion cost?
Loft conversion costs vary depending on the size, whether you’ll need to alter its structure for staircase access, the type of conversion you’re going for and where you live in the country, but as an average, a loft conversion will usually cost between £ 15000 to £ 30000.
This was a quick and precise insight for a Basic Loft Conversion. Hope this can answer your FAQs as much as possible.
Your Loft Conversion project doesn’t have to be complicated, but it can be challenging in that you are working with the structure that is already there. However, bear in mind that it must meet the 2018 building regulations.
So now you need to be stress-free and enjoy the process. You will soon have some additional space in your house and also increase its worth.

[b] Size
The size of your home will determine the cost too, depending on how large your loft space is.
[c] What do you want your attic space for?

Loft conversion costing and budgets (cost breakdown):-
How much you will pay for the loft conversion depends on the type of project you undertake.
Below is the list of professional fees for your loft conversion which will give you an approximate idea on how much would your loft conversion cost.
[a] Architects fees
A typical £30,000 to £40,000 loft conversion would be in the region of £1,200 to £2,400 for planning drawings.
[b] Building Regulations fees
You need to pay a fee to the person who comes for inspection a few times to inspect whether the build is following the correct regulations and signs the certificate once you are done with the construction work.
Under 40m2 – £385
40m2 to 60m2 – £460

Unforeseen issues may slightly raise the builder’s billing amount, so have a little contingency budget.
[g] Finishing touches
It’s the last but an important part of planning your budget for a loft conversion. Builder fees will only include the things mentioned in the plan; so read your detailed plan carefully and anything which is not mentioned will have to be funded from your budget instead.

How To Style Your Loft Conversions
Styling is not just limited to fashion and clothing, but it can also be done to the roof over one’s head.
A loft conversion can add value to your home, both in terms of adding extra space and by giving it a monetary value.
After building a loft conversion, the next task which comes into the picture is that of styling it.
So here are some tips and ideas which can help you successfully decorate your loft conversion.
Colours to style a loft conversion
The common characteristics of loft conversions are sloping ceilings and awkward corner spaces.
The colours chosen can enhance the area and make it look spacious, light and airy. ‘ABC LOFTS’ can help you complete your loft conversion by decorating and styling it and by making the most out of your structure, including those awkward corners and sloped ceilings.
During summer months when the temperature rises, lofts tend to get warmer due to their location at the top of the house. So, soft colours like warm greys, soft pinks or shades of white can aid a bit with helping the room feel cool, airy and create some light.
That doesn’t mean dark colours can’t be used or they are off the agenda completely. Beautiful and stunning focal points can be created by using your choice of paint or wallpaper on one of the walls. As many loft walls have interesting angles, it will create a beautiful contrast and enable the dark paint or wallpaper design to stand-out even more, producing a contemporary look.
Textures to style a loft conversion
Through the use of flooring and accessories, you can create a snug atmosphere. With any exposed beams in the loft wooden floors or wood-effect flooring can add a touch of colour and texture to the floor.
You can also add lots of cushions to the bed, of different tactile textures, and yes you can even place a chair or a small sofa if there’s room for it.
Lighting
You will have a plenty of natural light flooding into your loft conversion, from roof windows, dormer windows or balcony windows.
By including plenty of lamps and cleverly placed lighting you can add just the right amount of light in your loft room. For example, using roof lights or floor lamps can enhance the darker corners and small table lamps provide the perfect amount of ingenious and subtle light for reading.
Try adding a dimmer switch to your ceiling spotlights, which can help you have more control over light in your room.
Furniture ideas to style a loft conversion
It may not be practical to fit in standard-sized pieces of furniture if your loft conversion has lots of low sloped ceilings and beams. Here is one thing you can try; you can measure the space you have including the ceiling height, and also the room from which the furniture is to be carried upstairs to the loft.
You can also think of having bespoke furniture for a perfect fit. Bespoke pieces offer a more seamless look as they will be designed for your available space.
Storage ideas for a loft conversion
It’s a good idea to incorporate a storage unit to your loft interior and there are plenty of practical ways to do so.
You can build cupboards into sloping eaves roof and if your loft conversion is a relatively smaller space you can utilise hidden storage- such as storage built into the back of a headboard or storage drawers in bedsteads.
Customised storage solutions by ‘ABC LOFTS’ can help you maximize the space you have.
Now that you, have creative ideas and tips to decorate and style your loft conversion, try to make the best use of the space you have, add colours, designs and furniture to suit your individual needs. This will help you give a contemporary look to your loft conversion.

How to Choose a Company For Loft Conversion
Have you been thinking about converting a loft in your home to add more value and space? Perhaps your not sure where to start or how to go about it?
Is your loft space ideal for conversion?
Not all loft spaces are suitable for conversion, but most will convert well if you use your creativity and plan properly. There are three main things to consider:
Internal height:
Measure your loft space from the top of the ceiling joists to under the ridge board in the apex. The optimum length is 2500 mm or thereabouts to optimally convert it.
Roof pitch:
You also need to measure the angle of the roof. As you might know, the higher your pitch angle, the higher the central head height.
Footprint:
As a rule of thumb the internal rules should measure around 5,500 sides including the chimney and 7,500 front to back. This is a general estimate but it is good practice for an ideal execution.
You can implement a loft conversion yourself but it is time and labour intensive. Some things are better left to a specialist. But how do you select a loft conversion company in London, especially with so many vendors?
Since loft conversion is an expensive affair, if you are not cautious the expenses can spiral out of control. Without the right expertise, you may end up compromising the plan or design, defeating the purpose of loft conversion.
If the conversion is not executed thoroughly by a loft conversion specialist, it can actually diminish the value of your property. For most people, a house extension or remodelling is a once-in-a-life-time project. You can’t really do it yourself because it involves a fair bit of complexity with tasks like:
Modification of the existing foundation where necessary to provide extra columns and joists for support:
Electrification and Insulation
Drainage and plumbing
Walls, ceilings and flooring
Painting and finishing
As you can see, each of the above-listed tasks is jobs best left for specialists of the trades as they require specific skills and equipment.
With your work commitments and limited experience in these areas, it is neither practical nor time efficient to find the right contractor for each of these tasks.
Before you start your search, ask yourself the following questions:
Ideally, you should hire a reliable building contractor to manage these specific aspects of your loft conversion in London. Most of these loft conversion specialists already have a working relationship with several tradesmen to expedite the process of converting the loft.
What to bear in mind when hiring a loft conversion specialist in London?
Check their existing portfolio and check for loft conversion projects similar to yours.
Discuss the scope of the project clearly with responsibilities and costs details.
Take the full stock of all the material required and the cost details of each part of the work. This is to ensure the company will not rip you off.
Ask for all the rebuilding estimates in writing with a breakdown and a written agreement. Also, make sure to include a schedule for completion of work.
Ideally, contractors shouldn’t ask you for advance payments and the norm is to pay for the work on a pro-rata basis.
Verify the company’s licenses and online reputation.
Any responsible loft conversion company in London will take full responsibility of your project. This includes planning permissions, design approvals, construction, demolition, clearing up debris, and post-project support where required. Discuss this and get the agreement in writing.
Don’t forget to check the company’s website for credentials, testimonials etc. You can also select a loft conversion company recommended by friends or family.
A reliable loft conversion company will not only deliver great results, but they will also suggest ways to optimise the space and save on unnecessary costs. With a little planning and research, you can convert your loft space beautifully within your budget.

What to Expect When Converting Your Loft
A loft conversion is a great way of adding more space to your home. It’s not only affordable but also adds to the value of your home.
According to Federation of Master Builders, a loft conversion can add up to 20% to the total value of a property.
Recent years have seen loft conversions become a very popular choice for home improvement projects. Loft conversions can serve a variety of purposes, such as- a lounge, an extra bedroom, a home office, a personal gym or even a bathroom.
Loft conversions are simple to carry out and cause very little disturbance as most of the renovation work is done from the outside.
If you are considering a loft conversion for your home, our comprehensive guide will help you get an idea about the expected costs. The overall price of a loft conversion is dependent on various factors, such as:
The size of the loft
The cost of the renovation which depends on your requirements, if you need a bathroom hence plumbing expense
The cost of insulation
The location of the property
Cost of strengthening the floor, if required
Cost of adding roof or dormer windows
Cost of electrical fixtures, lights
Staircase and fire doors that comply with Building Regulations
Different Types of Loft Conversions and Loft Conversion Costs
Velux Loft Conversion
This is the most basic and cost-effective way of converting your loft. The only requirement being the height from the floor to the bottom of the ridge beam being enough. This conversion does not alter the structure of the loft’s roof line.
Velux windows maximize the natural light and are designed to match the roof line, hence very minor outdoor work is needed. Though it is the most cost-effective conversion it does not increase the space in the loft.
Velux Loft Conversion Cost- £29,000 to £33,000 including VAT
Dormer Loft Conversion
Dormer Conversion is another popular option mainly because of the additional space they offer. This conversion is mostly preferred by families when there is a need for an additional bedroom.
The dormer extends either from the side or back of the roof in the shape of a box. The extension projects out vertically and creates additional space. The price of the conversion also depends on the number of dormers you want to add.
Dormer Loft Conversion Cost- £35,000 to £39,000 including VAT
Mansard Loft Conversion
Mansard conversion offers maximum space and it provides the required space for larger family rooms or master bedrooms with an ensuite bathroom. A mansard conversion roof has a slope of 72 degrees, installed with windows.
Planning permission is needed before you carry out this type of conversion. This conversion is more expensive than the others as there is a significant requirement for building and structural work.
Mansard Loft Conversion Cost- £40,000 to £46,000 including VAT
Hip-to-Gable Loft Conversion
In hip-to-gable conversion, the whole sloping side of the roof is replaced with a wall that has the same vertical height as the height of the property. The conversion extends the ridge line of the property and fills the leftover gap with a newly extended loft area. The additional space creates an extra room for a home office, study, additional living room or a staircase.
Check for the suitability of the property before considering this conversion as the additional pressure of the outdoor work requires the roof to be a minimum of 2.2 meters tall.
Since this conversion is also quite costly than the others it would be a good idea to research well and compare quotes.
Hip-to-Gable Loft Conversion Cost- £41,000 to £46,000 including VAT
Consider the following factors before deciding the type of conversion to go for.
Your budget
Is the pitch of the roof correct?
Will the current roof structure allow for conversion?
Will, the overhead water tank need to be moved?
Before you start the project, make sure that you have received the required planning permission. Also, ensure that your plans are completely final before you submit them. Remember, in case there are changes you will have to reapply the plans.
Whether you choose to use the additional space as a luxurious bathroom or an extra bedroom, conduct a thorough evaluation and be sure to work out the exact requirements.

How Much Do Loft Conversions Cost?
You’ve been thinking about it for a long time. Making use of all of the empty space you have above your head, in your loft, to add an extra room – or two – that will afdd form, function and perceived value to your home. You may even already have some ideas about just what you’d like to convert your loft into. The one thing that is holding you back, however, is a concern about just how much loft conversion cost in the UK.
Loft Conversions Cost UK – The Basic Numbers
On average, a standard loft conversion can cost anywhere from around £20,000 – £40,000 with the cost increasing a little more if yours is a larger or very complicated project.
These are very general figures however, the only way you can actually determine just how much a loft conversion will cost you personally, for your unique home, is to begin asking reputable local loft conversion specialists for quotes. Most loft conversion company London will provide free, no obligation quotes upon request and will be more than happy to break down those costs to ensure that you understand them.
Loft Conversions Cost UK – Complicating Factors
Why do loft conversion costs differ from home to home? There are actually a number of factors that have to be taken into consideration when a contractor is compiling a quote, including all of the following: Type of Loft Conversion – Although ideally you’ll choose a loft conversion specialist who has the skills and experience to create a unique plan for the conversion of your space loft conversions in general fall into several different basic types, and which you chose will obviously affect the cost of the project.
Scope of Work – Depending upon what you actually what to do with your loft there may be a number of different construction elements involved, and the need to bring in different kinds of professionals. Length of Project – The longer a project is likely to take, the higher your costs are likely to be.
It’s Not Just About the Cost
Cost is of course a big consideration when comes to loft conversions, but it should never be used as the only deciding factor when deciding which quote to accept and which loft conversion specialist to work with. As any loft conversion is a project that will actually change the function of your home it’s important that whoever you choose has the experience and knowledge to execute the project successfully. Loft conversions call for dealing with a number of complicating factors, including things that you might not think about like ensuring the correct planning permissions are obtained and adhered to.
A builder who has only ever completed a handful of loft conversion projects is unlikely to be the best choice as while they may be able execute the basics when it comes to that are unique to loft conversions – like determining the best way to add access to the new space from the floor below – those with extensive loft conversion experience are almost sure to be able to get the job done faster, more effectively and at a better price because they have done it all before! You should also ask for references. Any reputable loft conversion specialist will be happy to share both their portfolio of past projects and their references with you as these are experts who are proud of their work. And if you are proud of something it’s only natural that you like to show it off!
Finally, there’s personal fit. A loft conversion specialist and their crew are going to be in and out of your home for at least a few weeks while they complete you project, so it’s very important that you are comfortable with the people are going to be doing that. Effective Ways to Cut the Costs of Your Loft Conversion
Longing for a loft conversion but worried that it will simply be a project that exceeds your current budget? Before you write off the idea altogether it might help to understand that there are ways you can save money on a loft conversion and still get that functional, attractive space you’re dreaming of. Here are just a few money saving suggestions.
Be Realistic About How Much Light and Headroom You Really Need
Two of the things that can add to the cost of your loft conversion considerably are raising the roof and adding new windows. So, if you’ve already got enough standing room in your loft to create a perfectly habitable space you may be able to save money by reigning in any expansion plans and having your loft conversion specialist work within your loft’s current dimensions.
When it comes to the addition of windows you certainly don’t want to be stuck with a dark, depressing space but you could consider making use of more affordable ways to add natural light – like sun tubes – that will often add less to the cost of your loft conversion than installing a set of full dormer windows.
Shop Around and Consider Going Small
Who you use to execute your loft conversion and create the additional room – or rooms – of your dreams is, of course one of the most important parts of the project. Price should never be the only consideration of course – you do want to hire someone who will do a great job – but if you shift your focus away from the larger loft conversion firms you may be able to tap into some real savings.
There are many smaller firms out there that have just as much experience – and just as many satisfied customer testimonials – as their larger counterparts, they just don’t have the same ad budgets to run splashy TV or magazine ads as the big boys. They do however often offer rates that are more reasonable as well as the kind of personal attention and customer service it’s very hard for a larger firm to provide.
Don’t Get Carried Away When It Comes to Extras
We’ve all been guilty of watching the ‘home decor’ pros on TV transform someone’s space from drab to fab, and many of us have lusted after the £50 a roll designer wallpaper and £100 a piece blinds they use while doing so. The fact is that converting a loft does involve more expense than just the construction basics, it has to be decorated and furnished when the bare bones of the loft conversion are completed.
Even if you work with an experienced loft conversion specialist – which you really should – you will have the final say on the decor details and while there is a certain allure to choosing the same things as they used to create that lovely space on the telly you’ll find that by shopping around you can find similar items for less, usually just without the fancy designer labelling, that could save you more than you imagine on the overall cost of your loft conversion project.
Remember, A Loft Conversion is a Good Investment
In addition to making homes more functional, attractive and easier to live in a well executed loft conversion can add value to its financial worth as well. So if you are still wavering, think of it this way. A loft conversion can help you remain in the home you love if its getting just a little bit too small, which will save you the hassle of moving right now, and it will add value to the place when you do come to sell, something that is a real win-win situation.

Is my house suitable for a loft conversion?
It’s a very common question asked by those who are considering expanding the size – and function – of their home; is my home suitable for a loft conversion?
The good news if you are considering such a project is that the majority of homes are indeed suitable for a loft conversion of some kind. However, if you want to be as sure as possible before you excitedly begin making plans for that new bedroom/playroom/home office/media room here is a basic guide to just how to do that:
Will Your Loft Measure Up?
Not all roofs are created the same, but here in the UK they can usually be divided into two different, basic types:
Modern Trussed Roof
Most homes built in the UK since 1965 boast a modern trussed roof. In these homes the trusses form a ‘W’ shape that is in the centre of your loft. For it to be suitable for conversion you’ll need it to measure at least 2.4 metres at the highest point.
Cut Rafter and Purlin Roof
This more traditional roof is usually found in older homes, those built before 1965. They are almost the complete opposite of a modern roof as their rafters for an ‘M’ shape in the middle of the space. You’ll need a clearance of 2.2 metres at the highest point for the most efficient conversions.
It should be noted that because of standardized building regulations almost all homes with a loft will be able to meet these minimum height requirements.
Will There Really Be Enough Space For a Loft Room?
There are two basic things that need to be taken into consideration to answer this question; the amount of floor space available and the pitch of your roof.
In terms of roof pitch the ideal is a pitch of 30 or more degrees, and obviously the higher the pitch the higher the central head height will be. A lower pitch is not necessarily a deal breaker though, as an experienced loft conversion specialist knows that there are a number of ways that this limitation can be successfully overcome.
In terms of floor space the ideal is that the internal walls measure 5.5 metres from one side to the other, and around 7 metres from front to back. However, again, there are design workarounds that can be utilized to make a smaller space work.
‘Stuff’ In the Way
Some people worry that some of the things that might be in place in the loft already might be an impediment to a loft conversion. But they can usually literally be worked around.
Take a obtrusive chimney stack for example. It can’t actually be moved easily – as it is often central to the stability of the home – but there are a lot of ways it can be worked around, or even incorporated, into the design of any loft conversion.
Planning Permission and Building Regulations
One thing many people don’t realise is that in most cases the planning permissions required for a loft conversion are usually pretty minimal. There are some strict limitations you must follow, but when you work with a roof conversion specialist you have the advantage that these experienced professionals will take care of all of that.
In the end, even after going through these basic checks the best way to determine whether or not your loft is suitable for conversion is to invite in a loft conversion specialist to take a look – and a walkthrough of your loft with you. Most reputable companies will do that free of charge and without obligation. So here’s a last question; what are you waiting for? An improved home awaits!

Will A Loft Conversion Add Value To My Home?
Regularly cited among the top ten ways to add value to your home, a loft conversion could be an incredibly cost effective of increasing the square footage and the resale value of your house.
In fact, a loft conversion is often cited in surveys as the best way to add value to your home. Recent research carried out by the Nationwide Building Society, which looked at homes all over the country, found that a loft conversion could add up to 20% to the value of your home. If you’re looking at a house valued at £200,000, that’s an increase of up to £40,000.
So the simple fact is that a loft conversion can actually be one of the best ways to invest in home improvements if you also have an eye towards increasing your property value. And who wouldn’t, even if they have no current plans to sell their home in the near future.
The key to making use of a loft conversion to increase the value of your home however is the quality of that conversion. Homebuyers are actually pickier than ever when shopping for a new home. It’s the reason that, as an industry, home staging has exploded across the UK.
Home shoppers now expect to see near Instagram worthy interiors when touring homes for sale, so a less than perfect loft conversion just isn’t going to get you the kinds of financial gains that you might have been hoping for.
Is a Loft Conversion a Hassle?
Although there are big benefits to be gained from commissioning a loft conversion, both in terms of the enjoyment you get out of living in it now and any possible financial benefits if and when you choose to sell, some people do worry that it is a project that is just too much of a hassle to consider undertaking. But is that really the case?
Although you should be able to remain living in your home throughout the process of your loft conversion, the fact is that there will be builders making changes within the house itself, and so will come with some measure of what could be termed hassle:
There will certainly probably be a bit of a reduction in your privacy; multiple people traipsing up your stairs several times a day or needing to be in the house for work to happen. Most good loft conversion companies, however, are very sensitive to the potential hassle work may cause to their clients and go to a great deal of effort to make sure that their presence is as unobtrusive as possible.
Much of the rest of the potential hassles involved in a loft conversion a good builder will take off your hands anyway. Figuring out if you’ll need planning permission, working those odd angles that lofts have – low eaves, a lack of light – so that the space becomes as beautiful and functional as possible, they will take care of all that. As well as one of the trickiest questions of all when it comes to loft conversions; how will you get up there from downstairs.
In fact, a loft conversion is far less hassle than the two other home improvement projects that are considered to be great for adding monetary value to your home, kitchen and bathroom remodelling.

What’s hot? Loft conversion trends, tips and tricks for 2019
Ring out the old and ring in the new! 2019 brings with it a whole new wave of interior design trends, colours and ideas. If you are after some extra space in your home and looking at loft conversion, then we bring you the 2019 guide to local loft conversion.
But first, a few reasons why you should consider converting your loft space. It provides the much-needed extra space. You can convert it to an extra living room, a home office, a bedroom or a bathroom. Apart from the functional benefits of loft conversion, your property valuation goes up, if you ever consider selling it. Take a look at some crafty loft conversion trips and tricks, based on the design trends for 2019:
Colour palette
2019 is going to be all about mindful living spaces and a life-style based approach to the new colors. Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year is Living Coral. The other popular shades are forest green, honeyed spice, cool aquas and soft terracottas. Paint companies have mapped the modern consumers’ choices to lifestyle, mental demands and digital trends that have inspired the palette for this year.
Rose gold is another popular shade used in interiors, be it accessorizing or emphasizing your loft space.
Make a rose gold statement in your loft conversion by using rose gold in lighting, furniture, lamps or artefacts.
Prints and Fabric
A mix of patterns is in Be bold with your fabric choices mixing florals and geometrics. Abstracts, animal skins ,and foliage prints are trending. As far as fabric choices go, velvet is still popular. And with such a wide colour palette and application, velvet is here to stay. From crushed velvet pillows to upholstered walls, even velvet beds and sofas are quite the phenomenon.
Windows and natural light
There is great emphasis on window design and natural light in loft conversion designs.
Velux windows are a clever way of lighting up a small space. The benefit is two-fold, because they make your small loft space appear larger. If your loft has old, dark windows, then you should consider redoing them when you undertake the loft conversion process. Windows help to add perspective, depth and dimension to your living spaces and just by changing the window style, you can add space and make more room. You can also create the perfect reading nook from a large window ledge.
Taking into consideration the conversion type and use of the room, plan for natural light that is available and the types of windows that will work best.
You can open up a small room by using a glass panel, that is frameless that can also add to the view.
If you use vaulted ceilings and conversions to make the most of your roof’s character; these can be enhanced with casement windows or balconied window spaces.
If you have the budget then do consider dormer windows. These can be set into the roof slope and situated well in from the eaves. Not only are they large, but they allow a lot of natural light into the room.
LED lights
Be creative in your use of lighting and add that X factor to your living space. Light fittings have a greater purpose to serve than simply lighting up the room. The right lighting can set the mood for your room and add an element of innovation:
Use uplighters and dimmer switches to create that softer look, if you are converting your loft to a bedroom. If your loft is repurposed into a study, go for spotlights and large, contemporary standing lamps that can brighten up your study.
You can also use pendant and chandelier lights to add a touch of drama to the room. It can not only be a conversation point but also add a feeling of opulence and sophistication. Fortunately, LED light fitting choices are quite versatile and there is something available for every loft.
Jazz it up with green
Let’s face it. Indoor gardens are not going out of fashion anytime soon. It all started with various cacti, and then the succulent craze took over and now indoor plants with large leafage are just as popular.
Not only do these plants bring visual and sometimes health benefits to your room, they are often a great talking point. Tiny plants and succulents are ideal during loft conversions because they fit right just in, whether it is an extra bedroom, a study or bathroom that you are converting to.

Loft Extension London Ideas: The Loft Playroom
There are lots of projects a loft extension in London can help you execute, and lots of ways a loft extension in London can improve the enjoyment you and your family get out of your home. One popular option is to make use of a converted loft as a playroom/play area for the kids.
Planning The Loft Playroom of Your Kids Dreams
If you have younger children, creating a dedicated space they can call their own in the form of a loft playroom is a win-win situation for everyone. The kids get their own area to be as rowdy and creative as they want (within reason) and the rest of your home (hopefully) remains adult friendly and presentable to the world at large.
A child’s playroom, above all, else, needs to be a safe and secure place to play. That is where a loft conversion specialist comes in. They will be able to execute the structural work that needs to be done to ensure that it is. Once their work is done it will be up to you to decorate it and you’ll need to be ready to add your input while they are still working as well, about things like flooring choices and lighting.
With all of this in mind here are a few great tips for creating – via loft extension in London – a playroom your kids can enjoy for years:
The Walls
Fads come and go in a kid’s world, and at a frequent rate. Sometimes it can seem like one month they are crazy about one thing and the next they have forgotten all about it and moved onto something new. Therefore keeping up with a “theme” for their playroom walls can be tough.
Removable wall decals are one way of doing so easily though. A few decals featuring their current favorite cartoon characters or interests can be purchased for just a few dollars from you local home store. They affix in seconds (literally) and can be removed and replaced just as easily, when they become “old” and the kids have moved onto a new interest.
The Floors
Carpet is OK for a playroom but gets messy and dirty very easily when there are active children around and lugging a vacuum cleaner up to the loft every two days to try to make sure it stays clean may not be something you want to do.
Cork flooring is one popular new alternative and for a couple of good reasons. Cork’s spongy properties will cushion a kid’s fall far better than even the deepest carpet pile can. It is also a material that possesses natural anti bacterial properties and will resist dust and dirt far better than other flooring options and, perhaps best of all, as the space will be above your head it muffles sound brilliantly, so whoever is watching telly, or trying to sleep, a floor down won’t be disturbed by the noise of kids at play.
Storage
A good playroom has lots of storage space, and lofts can usually provide that, especially in the eaves, but to be most effective it needs to be kid friendly storage space. Shelves set high on the walls and liable to fall at any minute tallboys are not the best options.
Adding a number of brightly colored plastic storage boxes is a better idea. They are tough and durable and because they are located at “kid height” even young toddlers can be taught to put away their toys neatly at the end of the day.
Child Safety Tips
A loft playroom for young kids should be one of the safest rooms in the home. Asking your loft conversion specialist to put child proof covers on plug sockets and keep trailing wires to a minimum are musts. Opting for furniture without sharp edges can help make that the case as well.
Add Flexible Furniture
Tiny tables and chairs are cute for toddlers but they have a very limited useful life. A low table and lots of kid friendly options like floor cushions and beanbags are a better idea as they will be as suited to use by a teen – when the loft playroom becomes a loft hangout – as they are for a tot.
