Not only is he a self-taught designer, but he is now also the successful Creative Director of the lighting company “Tom Dixon” and continues to create new art pieces each year that guides the evolution of interior design.
Tom Dixon: a short introduction
Born in 1959 in Tunisia, Tom Dixon followed his parents and moved to England at the age of 4. He taught himself the art of welding to then start creating furniture from old salvaged furniture. He rose to recognition with this initial style of welded furniture and by the late 1980s, he found himself working for Cappellini, a renown Italian furniture company for whom he designed the iconic ‘S’ chair. In 1998, he was appointed Head of Design by Habitat (the owner of IKEA) then became Creative Director. During his stay in Habitat, Dixon got the opportunity to work alongside young designers and legends in the designing world such as Verner Panton.
Tom Dixon was awarded OBE by the Queen of England for his outstanding contributions to the arts. Till this day,  his works are displayed and sold across the world. Tom Dixon shops are open across the world in major cities such as London, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Los Angeles, and New York. Each year, the company releases new collections ranging from lighting to home accessories.
Tom Dixon’s Beat collection
One of Dixon’s earlier collection, the Beat Collection of ceiling lights is arguably his most well known. Inspired by the water vessels used in Northern India, Tom re-created them into various shapes of ceiling lights to create the perfect symmetrical pendants.
