We hit two zero deduction routines and blew away the crowd! We're taking home 2nd place out of 6 teams and the drive to work even harder in these upcoming practices leading up to cheersport! So so happy with these girls and cannot wait to see where we go from here! It was a panther party in Atlantic City 💕🐾😍#smallteambigdream #pantherparty (at Atlantic City Convention Center)

Bobby Seale
When it comes to the importance of the Black Panther Party, Bobby Seale is almost synonymous with the political party. Born Robert “Bobby” Seale on October 22nd, 1936, Seale endured a lot in his upbringing. Growing up dirt poor in Dallas, Texas, Seale and his family decided to move to Oakland, California to find more success together.
After dropping out of high school in 1955, Seale decided to enlist in the U.S. in 1955 (biography.com). However, after four years, Seale, who was known to be hot-headed and temperamental, was discharged after getting in an altercation with a higher-ranking official (biography.com).
After, Seale found himself working towards his high school diploma in night school, while he worked during the day. Seale decided to attend Merritt College in Oakland, and majored in engineering (shmoop.com). This is where Seale received his “political awakening”, by being heavily influenced by the local political rallies around campus. He met future co-founder of the Black Panther Party, Huey Newton, and together, they decided to form the Party. Their main influences were Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speeches and activism of non-violence, and Malcom X’s “by any means necessary” approach.
After Malcom X’s death in 1965, Seale and Newton decided to put their plan in action, by officially forming the Black Panther Party in 1966 (shmoop.com). Also, their approach to systemic racism, police brutality, and other issues plaguing the African-American communities also enabled them to look more into “Marxist revolutionary theory” (historyinanhour.com).
In 1968, Seale and seven others (initially referred to as the “Chicago Eight”, and later was called the “Chicago Seven”) were arrested for inciting a riot in protest of the 1968 Democratic Convention in Chicago, Illinois (aarp.org). While there were a lot of rallies and protests during that era, a lot that had to do with President Nixon, and their protests of the Vietnam War. However, while Seale did disagree with the war, he was also fed up with the negative treatment of African-Americans. Seale was also the only Black Panther in the group of eight.
During the trials in 1969, Seale was viewed as a menace in the courtroom, as he consistently talked over the judge. He called the judge, Julius Hoffman, “a racist, a fascist, and a pig” (aarp.org). At one point, Seale had to be “gagged and chained to his chair” (aarp.org), prompting the judge to separate Seale from the seven other defendants and to put him on trial alone. In 1970, Seale was charged with 16 counts of contempt and was sentenced to a four-year prison sentence for his actions. He also was under trial for the death of another Black Panther, as Seale was accused of killing the man for being a police informant. “The trial ended with a hung jury” (aarp.org) and Seale’s contempt charges were dropped, and he only served a two-year sentence (aarp.org).
Seale’s attempts to resume Black Panther Party operations were unsuccessful, mainly because of the original members were either dead or in jail. This caused Seale to focus his efforts in helping the community, which he still does to this day.
Growing up, I received a lot of my information about the Black Panther Party from my grandmother. While she wasn’t a member and didn’t participate in any of their rallies or protests, she respected their efforts from afar. She spoke mainly about Newton because in her words, he seemed to be the “most radical out of all of the Panthers”. This enabled me to learn more about Seale’s work and what he has done.
The one thing that tends to bother me about people’s interpretations of the Black Panther Party is that they were violent and all they cared about was hurting people, which isn’t the case. The reason why people view the Panthers as violent people is because of how they were perceived in the media at times. I feel like the Panthers didn’t receive nearly the same amount of attention for their good in the community. Their community meetings were about self-defense, and they were only provoked if pain or physical punishment was handed down to them.
Their meetings were also about how to uplift communities, by finding housing, obtaining sustainable income, and securing jobs. The Panthers also invested in getting more young African-Americans to become more educated, helped them with healthcare and to completely remove African-American men for the selection of war. These actions and more were the founding the principles of the “10-point program,” with the tagline, “What We Want Now!”
Now that I’m older, I become more entrenched in the Black Panthers’ message. I’ve noticed that today, African-Americans need Panther-like voice. Black Lives Matter has been the main force of empowerment, and they do great work. However, a lot more work has to be done in the community and with police relations in order to feel the true impact of what the Black Panther Program implemented.
