CHRISTMAS MIRACLE!

Early Christmas Eve morning in 2003, two squads US Army Soldiers in Iraq were assigned to sweep and clear two adjacent homes where Iraq terrorists were holed-up.

A Army Sgt. was leading one of those assault squads. The other squad hit their target first.

The Sgt. heard a lot of small arms fire and yelling, so the Sgt thought he would round the corner and size up the situation before advancing his team.

Unfortunately, as the Sgt turned the corner, he found himself staring directly into the barrel of a 9mm automatic pistol.

The Sgt never had time to be scared, he just knew he was dead.

The terrorist pulled the trigger and, miraculously, the Sgt found himself still standing.

The Sgt figured the bullet had missed. He advanced on the Iraqi, who immediately surrendered.

After the enemy was rounded up, the Sgt started to feel light headed and one of his Soldiers insisted that he proceed to the hospital.

The Sgt realized at this time that he had lost his front tooth in the gun fight. He figured the ballistic shock from the weapon's blast had knocked it loose.

He was wrong!

When he reported to the Army hospital early that morning Major Kimberly Perkins, an oral surgeon, took a panograph and discovered the incredible truth.

The 9mm bullet did NOT miss the Sgt!

The Sgt was hit directly in the face!

The bullet entered just below his nose where it impacted the apex of #8. The energy from the bullet was transferred to the tooth, literally ejecting the tooth from its socket, and stopping the bullet in its track. Other than the missing tooth, the majority of the Sgt injuries were confined to soft tissue.

In Southeastern Ohio is a wonderful Ohio state park – Hocking Hills – see grid coordinates below. There are approximately 8 well know waterfalls in the Hocking Hills State Park and surrounding areas and dozens more after a good rain. The best time to visit is Spring when we have had some rain and the water is running. Everyone has a favorite they like to visit and it would be difficult to see all of them in a day or two.

I’ve had a chance to visit 2 at opposite ends of the area.  Rockbridge State Nature Preserve is just off Rt 33 about 10 minutes north of Logan, OH. and Cedar Falls is in Hocking Hills just north of Rt 56 on SR 374 – this is the southern end of Hocking Hills.

The hike to Cedar Falls is fairly easy and a little steep in some areas. The falls area is great, open, places to sit and get lost in the sound of the waterfall. There are hikes from there to Ash Cave south and Old Man’s Cave north.

Rockbridge on the other hand is a HIKE! It is a mile and 3/4 loop to the rock bridge and back and it is very steep in some areas, lots of tree roots to navigate and a bit slippery after a good rain. I would say it’s not a hike for someone with knee or hip problems. Also it’s not for the faint of heart or afraid of heights. That said it was a great hike for me, my Fitbit clocked about 10,000 steps and over 65 floors – 2/3’s of a high-rise in NYC! You will get your heart rate up…

Rockbridge is very unique for Ohio. It is the longest natural rock bridge in Ohio out of 12 in the state. 100 feet long, 10 to 20 feet wide and approximately 3 foot thick, plus it arches 50 feet across a ravine. This is where the faint of heart and height issue comes in. There are NO hand rails over the rock bridge! Don’t slip. But as I said earlier, it’s a fun walk and great sights along the way. I read someone’s comment about seeing 20 different kinds of birds in the area. Lastly the walk to and from the hills is nice.

Golden hour, cherry blossoms, and a rainbow - who could ask for anything more? :) I was actually on my way to the local college last night hoping to still catch the cherry blossoms at golden hour. Alas, I was running a little bit late only because the buildings behind the camera were already shadowing most of the trees. But as we got near to the site, the rainbow kept growing from one end to the other. So God worked out the timing just perfect! It's hard to see, but there's even actually a double rainbow (look on the left). This is a Brenizer method stitched panograph as the width of the rainbow was too much for my lens and the space I had. That is, multiple pictures taken and then merged together for one big one. Adobe Lightroom does a great job of stitching these together. . Mar 2022 .
