In 900 million years these rocks won’t be part of the same land mass. They will move around the planet and will form many different worlds. They will host an infinite number of environments, with life forms so strange, that trying to imagine them now, through the consciousness of a microscopic life form, is impossible. Oxygen is just appearing, and as its amount in the atmosphere increases, life will most likely thrive, and will find new ways to produce it, expanding the diversity of beings, intelligences and of perceptions on the planet. Feelings will also develop, they will evolve and change, and one day, there will be a word to describe the impossibility of being away from someone, and one to describe the disappearance of life. I will long for the next time that separated continents will come together again. I want to trust the endless cycle of leaving.

Raine sat down on the bench with an audible sigh, reaching inside their pocket for a cigarette and paying only attention to their own hands for a while before being pulled back to reality by the sound of shrill voices. They looked up, watching a band of kids parade in the grassy field opposite of the bench, one of them was waving a flag of Nova Pangea around and yelling words that were unfamiliar to Raine, which must either mean they were bullshit or a different language. Another kid, who was wearing a cap of fake fur and clear ears, pounced upon the flag barrier. The attack made Raine raise an eyebrow. It seemed like a recital of sorts, but nobody was in charge of it. 

They looked to the side, another person had occupied the same space. They pointed a finger at the display as they caught the eyes of the stranger. “Ye’re seeing that too, right?” they asked.

Time and Place: Between 231 and 227 million years ago, in the Carnian of the Late Triassic

Hyperodapedon is known from a variety of locations across Pangea, from the Ischigualsto Formation of Argentina, to the Wolfville Formation of Nova Scotia, to the Maleri Formation of India, the Lossiemouth Sandstone of Scotland, and the Pebbly Arkose Formation of Zimbabwe. In many ways, it safer to assume that Hyperodapedon was present in an environment in the late Carnian, than it is to assume it wasn’t.

Physical Description: Hyperodapedon was a typical rhynchosaur, stockily-built and low to the ground. The clade Rhynchosauria means “beaked reptiles”, because the front of their skulls had toothless prongs, or “beaks”. The back of the skull was very wide, but the beaked front region were very narrow. Hyperodapedon had an overbite; the front beak overhung the lower beak. Although traditionally restored exposed, this beak was likely covered up at least partially by lips when the mouth was closed. Also interestingly, the nares were conjoined and facing the front of the skull. Although this is very rare in reptiles, this is the condition in mammal skulls

Rhynchosaurs like Hyperodapedon did have teeth, but they were smaller and modified into broad, continuous chewing plates located at the back of skull. Said back of the skull had large openings indicative of powerful chewing muscles. The neck and tail were relatively short, and the spine was overall rather flexible. The limbs were short, semi-splayed, and powerful. Each foot had five digits. The entire body could grow up to 1.3 meters (4.2 feet) long.

Diet: Hyperodapedon was an herbivore; its diet likely consisted of tough but not hard plants such as seed ferms, ginkgos, cycads, and conifers. It would have also used its snout and powerful limbs to dig for roots and tubers.

Behavior: The amount of Hyperodapedon remains found gives us a look into its senses, musculature, and mobility. There’s a lot to go into; if you’re interested, Michael Benton wrote a huge monograph on it. Its large nares and eyes indicate it was diurnal and had a good sense of smell. Like modern snakes, it lacked tympanic ears, but could hear vibrations picked up through the ground. It had a powerful tongue and a shearing bite, that would have helped it cut up tough plant material.

Ecosystem: Hyperodapedon was an incredibly common small herbivore. As above, it’s safer to assume that Hyperodapedon was present in a Carnian environment than to assume it wasn’t. Across the globe Hyperodapedon would have regularly encountered early dinosaurs, pseudosuchians ranging from herbivorous aetosaurs to large predators like rauisuchians, early pterosaurs, other weird archosauromorphs, early lepidosaurs, dicynodonts, cynodonts, mammaliaforms, temnospondyls, and the occasional marine reptile that hauled itself onto land. This sounds like a quick overview of terrestrial Triassic fauna, but if a Hyperodapedon traveled from one end of Pangaea to the other, it wouldn’t have thought much of how the dinosaurs were slightly chunkier and differently-colored in this region. Its main concern would have been finding more chewy plants to eat.

Other: Rhynchosaurs were a super abundant group. In some places, they could make up to 60% of the vertebrate fauna! Then they went extinct before the end of the Triassic.

Hanna Rousseau was born to Sara Rousseau and was part of her mother and grandmother’s small coven. She never knew her father, but her mother said he was also a witch who was living in their town at the time before he up and left. 

Hanna was made aware of her witch abilities from a young age and taught how to use her powers as soon as they appeared. She had an exceptional affinity for witchcraft and caught on quickly with learning the craft. 

When Hanna was young, her mother and grandmother struggled with money as their store didn’t always do well. In their store, they often collected supernatural artifacts and either kept them or returned them to their rightful owners. 

In order to make ends meet, her mother and grandmother would sometimes do special magical favors for people. They would use their abilities to enchant items, create potions, create new identities for people, and even find ways to get winning lottery tickets for people. 

Once Hanna grew up, she chose to go to college far away from home, wanting to learn more about the world and experience it. She went to college and then traveled the world after getting her degree. After that, she realized that she wanted to be a museum curator and find artifacts for exhibits. 

She eventually went to Nova Pangea and landed herself in Astoria while looking for items for an exhibit. It was there that she met Alex Hazelton, a professor at the university nearby. Immediately, they hit it off and Hanna ended up staying in Astoria where they eventually married. 

A few years later, she gave birth to her daughter, Mira. Her mother and grandmother liked Alex, but were never particularly thrilled that he wasn’t a witch and Mira would only ever have abstract powers. Still, they loved Mira and stayed in touch with Hanna. 

About two years ago, Hanna’s mother contacted her to let her know that her grandmother died under possibly suspicious circumstances. However, there was never enough evidence for a case to be opened. Hanna mourned her grandmother but also never saw any reason to believe that her grandmother died under any other circumstances other than old age. 

It wasn’t until Hanna was attacked by an old enemy that she realized that there was probably some truth to what her mother said. She disappeared that night, returning home to Winnipeg to protect her mother and the rest of her coven from the enemies that surrounded them. 

She never told Alex about her former life, although he knew she was a witch. She also chose not to tell him about the enemies that were attacking her. This way, he’d stay safe in Astoria with their daughter and her enemies would never find them. 

But, the longer she stayed with her coven, the less she told Alex and eventually, she decided that there was no way she could be with a mortal human. So, she called him to tell him to stop looking for her and to sign the divorce papers she sent over. 

Fast forward to present day, Hanna has returned to Astoria to get her daughter, Mira, back into her life. She wants to take her daughter back home to Winnipeg to raise her with the rest of her coven just as she was raised so she could learn about being a witch and how to use her abilities.

BIOGRAPHY

Maximilian was born Maxi Theodoru, the son of a Pakistani mother in service of a rich landowner in the small town of Wotton in the United Kingdoms. He grew up in a small house on the estate of the family, side by side with the two children of the landowner. Two years older than the eldest daughter, Maxi was often in charge of their little adventures. It wasn’t long before he fell head over heels in love with Rose, all the while knowing that outside of the estate, they were worlds apart. His mother placed him in a boarding school to ensure he wouldn’t get any ideas. 

At age fourteen, Maxi had been playing hide and seek with Rose and Marian when suddenly a blinding pain shot through his body. He screamed and screamed until the pain stopped. Ros found him, hands turned to paws. She dried his tears, kept his secret, and helped him figure it out and control it. The pain became less, but the ability widened the difference between himself and Rose even more. For Rose it felt like the opposite, taking his willingness to trust her with his secret as a sign of his love for her. 

Rose’s father found out not much later. In realising his daughter’s affection, his attention was sparked, and he soon found his attention drawn to the ability of the servant’s son. Ambitious at heart, the father knew he could use it to his own advantage. At first he just brought Maxi along to meetings, introducing him as Maximilian. At first it was as if Maximilian was the most likely candidate to be his son-in-law. But soon it became clear that he was merely used, a show-pony, a monkey that knew a few tricks. Rose was promised, but he did not know whether she was worth it. He cheated, spied; he lied, and he manipulated. He did what the father wanted him to do, using his ability to bring to light secrets. He grew wary and distant, learning things he had never wished to know. 

It went on for a decade. Maximilian took the lessons to heart, presented himself like the son of a posh lord, the husband to a beautiful posh lady. But he knew better, he was not considered human. Those who knew, looked at him as if he was a filthy creature. Those who didn’t, told lies about him behind his back. The father merely smiled. He was twenty-five when Rose broke it off, done with how distant he was, saying she no longer saw the boy in the man before her. 

He was free. 

Using the contacts he had acquired through the father, Maximilian started to spin his own lies. He manipulated who he wanted to, took jobs that he knew he could change to chaos. He started dreaming bigger. Maximilian Ganymede Tirmizi was born, a rich gentleman with a lot of money, and who could solve all your problems. Fucking over the rich was his main goal however, living in the houses of those who asked for his services, creating chaos, destroying lives and fortunes.

Hey there, guys! I've been looking at your RP for a few days now and I absolutely love all the work you've put into it. I love all the backstory of Nova Pangea and all the work you've put into literally creating a society from scratch. I really want to apply, but I have a few questions before doing so (just for plot-purposes): are education and healthcare in Nova Pangea universal and free like England/Brazil or is it like the US?

Thank you for the compliment, it really warms our heart whenever we read something like that, and we hope you don't mind we'll post this question on our main blog, it's just so others can have access to this information as well! 

In answer to your question, yes. Nova Pangaea provides free education and free healthcare for all. Granted, that are private educational institutions that are more specialized in one field of education or another, but these also offer scholarships and financial student aid (that will not make you spend your whole life paying your student debt either)!
