Beneath a Full Moon Sky-A LND Phanfic | Chapter 1: Gustave

My mother just died in front of me. She told me something about my 'true' father, but I'm sure that she was just being delusional.

Her best friend, Meg Giry, just shot Mother in giving up her life to save mine. I am still confused about why she wanted to kill me. Mr. Y walked up to my mother's corpse. He kissed her. I was even more confused than before and before I was very confused.

"Miss Fleck!" he shouted. "Cremate Christine's body. I will deal with the ashes later."

"Yes, sir," Miss Fleck said and took the corpse.

"I am so sorry, please don't tell Mother," Meg said. "Or anyone for that matter."

"Well thankfully Raoul went away, never to return," Mr. Y said. "But your mother is on the other side of the bridge and witnessed the death."

"Never mind," Meg said.

"Father left Mother?" I asked. "Father left me?"

"That man, Gustave," he said. "Is not your father."

"What?!" I shouted. "Then who is?"

"I am," he said.

I was purely shocked. I didn't know what to say. Mother was right and not being delusional. Of course, I don't know how babies were made, but I knew that people who are married have children. But Mr. Y and my mother weren't married. Either way, he removed his mask. I gently touched his face and then hugged him. It took a moment before he hugged me back, and we hugged for quite a bit while sobbing. After that, we released from one another's grasp.

"How?" I asked.

"Well," he said. "Did your mother and Raoul ever talk about an opera house?"

"Yes," I said, slightly confused.

"At the opera house," Mr. Y started. "Your mother was a chorus girl, along with Meg. One day, while rehearsal for an opera called Hannibal was going on, the opera house owner came in with three men. The opera house owner said that he was retiring and running off to Germany. The three men there were named Firmin, Andre, and Raoul, your so-called father. The lead soprano, Carlotta, started singing the aria in Act III. I then had a little fun and dropped the backdrop on her." He chuckled at the memory. "I left a note to say, 'Pay me 20000 francs a month' and they basically said 'No'. Your mother then sang her first aria that night. She sounded like an angel. Then, I acted as her dead father, your grandfather, the man you were named after. I then took her inside her mirror and showed her the basement of the opera house and my shrine dedicated to her. She then saw a realistic mannequin replica of her in a wedding dress and fainted. I carried her to my bed and laid her down. I stayed up the entire night working on an opera. I also wrote about five hundred notes to Firmin, Andre, Raoul, Carlotta, and Madame Giry, saying that Christine needs to be the lead in the opera that they were showing that night, Il Muto. Of course, they didn't listen. Your mother sometime in the middle of the night or in the morning, I didn't know what time it was because we were in the basement. The candles down there were running low, though, so it was late. Anyway, she unmasked me. I got mad at her, damned her, cursed her, called her a little lying Delilah, and a prying Pandora. She gave me back my mask. I told her to leave and to go back to the upper level of the opera house. Upon finding out that Christine was playing Sarafimo instead of the Duchess. I was upset, left my grandmother's recipe for voice remover."

"Your grandmother's recipe for voice remover?" I asked. "Why would she need that?"

Mr. Y ignored me and continued his story. "Carlotta ordered a maid to spray it in her mouth, thinking it was wine. She lost her voice and Christine was going to be the Duchess. I was overjoyed until I found out that a man named Joseph Buquet was spying on me the entire time. I naturally did what I had to do. I hung him. I hung him in front of everyone. The opera stopped. Your mother and Raoul ran to the roof. I had naturally thought that would happen, so I went to the roof before they could. I hid behind a statue. Raoul and your mother started singing a horrible song together. When I looked, they were kissing. I was thoroughly repulsed and looked away. They left, and I cursed the day they did not do all I asked of them.

"Six months later, Firmin and Andre held a masquerade in honor of my disappearance. I appeared to them. I took away your mother's engagement ring, Raoul had proposed some time before that night. I presented them with the opera I was composing, Don Juan Triumphant. Your mother went to the cemetery to visit her father's grave. She denied my existence. I then pretended to be her dead father again. She fell for it, and then of course Raoul had to ruin the fun. We battled. In the snow. I stabbed him in the arm and he was about to stab me in the chest, but your mother saved me. I knew that her love was for me. She and Raoul left. I then declared war on them. When I got back to the opera house, I messed with some cables and chains. That is important for later."

"I know," I said. "You made the chandelier fall."

"Yes," Mr. Y said. "When my opera premiered, I killed a man named Piangi, Carlotta's husband. I came on as the star. Your mother and I had a moment that didn't seem like acting. Raoul noticed. I then realized your mother was acting and she unmasked me. In front of everyone. I made the chandelier fall and your mother and I escaped. I took her to my lair again. Raoul came down there, but I had a plan. First, I attempted to drown him. He escaped, of course. Then, I attempted to hang him. Your mother then kissed me and I released him and your mother. I then shattered a few mirrors and escaped through a secret passage to here in Manhattan. I made a new mask and the rest is history."

"But how does you being my father have to do with the opera house?" I asked.

"Let's just say that on my way to Manhattan," Mr. Y said. "Your mother and I had a little reunion."

I didn't want to hear any more details, so I just said, "Okay."

"Now Gustave," my father said. "I don't want to bring any bad memories about your mother's death so for your sake, an mine I'm going to be burning this bridge to nothing."

"Okay," I said. But there was one more thing that concerned me. "But what will people say if they see me and know that I'm Raoul and Mother's son?"

A tear rolled down Father's face. "We'll have to keep you away from public for now. At least until I can make you a mask to conceal your face. No one can know your true identity except for Meg and Madame Giry and Miss Fleck. They are the only people I trust. Well, my trust level for Meg has decreased due to the thing that just happened!" he said in a dramatic crescendo at the end.

Miss Fleck returned. She handed Father Mother's ashes. "Here you go, brother."

"Thank you, Espen," Father replied. Now I was just as confused as before.

"Wait," I said. "You are brother and sister?"

"Yes," Miss Fleck said. "Erik here is my brother. He told me recently that you are my nephew."

"Espen," Father said. "Should we tell him about our family initiation?"

"We have to wait for the right time," Miss Fleck said.

"What family initiation?" I asked.

"Like Espen said," Father told me. "We have to wait for the right time." He struck a match and burned the bridge.

11. What song makes you cry every time?

Okay, so here’s the thing: I have a deep, semi-irrational hatred of Andrew Lloyd Weber despite having seen more than one touring production in my life and listening to songs from various Phantom productions even though my favorite hobby is making fun of that musical . I hate his face. I hate that I can’t buy a Halloween-themed CD without it having a knockoff version of the riff from The Phantom of the Opera. I hate that I was particularly sleep-deprived once after two days of not sleeping and watched the entirety of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at 2 AM because it was there and the whole experience felt like a confusing fever dream except Donny Osmond was there. I hate literally every character in The Phantom of the Opera except Carlotta. I’m pretty sure Andrew Lloyd Weber made a dark deal sometime in the 70s to have several hit musicals but at a terrible cost. I strongly believe that a lot of his work has misogynistic overtones. I know it’s almost passé at this point to make fun of Cats because it was passé in the 80s, but what even is Cats? What the hell is Cats? Why is it so weirdly horny? Why does the costume design fill me with existential dread? I have never seen Cats because I am terrified of Cats.

And yet sometimes when I have the need to feel an emotion and cry a bit (if I don’t schedule some time every few weeks to cry, my emotions get stuck inside my body and get backed up), I listen to “Memory” from that stupid musical and I hate that it does the trick. Go to hell, Andrew Lloyd Weber.

16. What song do you have on repeat right now?

When I write have a tendency to listen to songs on repeat, sometimes for hours at a time. For awhile, my writing song was the Arctic Monkeys cover of “Red Right Hand,” and then it was “Breathless�� by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. For a bit, it was “Long Way Home” by Tom Waits and then it was the Norah Jones cover. A few chapters of Death Is Not the End were fueled by me listening to “Barrett’s Privateers,” mostly the Stan Rogers version but also Alestorm. I definitely went through a period of listening to one Ramones song but I’m not sure which one because most of their songs are variations on the same three tunes. I listened to “Sympathique” by Pink Martini for awhile and Grace Jones singing “La Vie en rose.”

Lately, I’ve been listening to a live version of “The Bitch Is Back” by Elton John. It makes me want to wear ten inch heels and get into a fight.

32. What’s the oldest song you have?

I like folk music and the blues but I have very few records. A lot of my music listening is through Pandora and Spotify because music’s expensive. I have a record player but the records I own are mostly new wave, so while I do listen to old music, I don’t have old music. I recently bought a CD from my city’s blues society, but it’s modern, local artists doing versions of old blues songs, so I’m not so sure if that counts or not. I haven’t listened to it yet but I will soon.

I have a Johnny Cash album with “Cry! Cry! Cry!” on it, so that’s probably the oldest song that I can think of off hand on physical media that I own and can touch. When it comes to non-physical media, I’ve been listening to a lot of Josephine Baker lately.

THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

Rika: “Sing once again with me, our strange duet.” Rika constantly tries to prove throughout the story that V has some sort of devil inside of him too, since to her that’s the only way V could understand her.

“My power over you grows stronger yet. And though you turn from me to glance behind. The phantom of the opera is there, inside your mind.” Rika’s darkness is darker than yours! And yet despite her devils, despite her atrocious crimes, despite V’s hesitations and regrets, it is his “unconditional“ love for Rika that stops him from acting at the beginning.

V: “Those who have seen your face, draw back in fear. I am the mask you wear.” Rika tells us quite plainly that she uses fear as a manipulative tactic on the believers. V masks all these crimes from the RFA.

Both: “Love me, that’s all I ask of you.” (I think this one is a stretch given the timeline of V’s emotional development, but oh well, I think maybe the feelings were growing even if the words of love and declarations weren’t?)

Bonus if you have sympathy for Rika: the All I Ask of You reprise. Rika: “I gave you [the blank canvas you wanted]. Made your [art] take wing. And now, how you’ve repaid me. Denied me and betrayed me... You will curse the day you did not do! All that [Rika] asked of you!”

RFA member: “Dear, MC what a splendid party!” lmao

WISHING YOU WERE SOMEHOW HERE AGAIN

V’s feelings about his mother...

“Wishing I could hear your voice again, knowing that I never would. Dreaming of you, won’t help me to do, all that you dreamed I could.” V��s dreams of painting are unrealized until the good ending (idk about that musician business).
