oh my god finally back home

very glad to be finally away from MIL who keeps insisting we need to assert dominance over our dog and not listen to the vet about his recent GI issues and just feed him chicken and rice instead of worming him 🙄
we pick Tiber up on Thursday <3 I miss him
#she’s ridiculous about non dog things too I am so tired#she also kept talking about how in the old days they would worm dogs with chewing tobacco#which fine if that’s what you had access to but I am NOT FEEDING MY DOG TOBACCO???#ma’am???#bruh that’s not even the start of it either blesrsagghhg#I am not giving Tiber chaw when I have PANACUR

Add an r to fiendly and change that sword to an oral syringe and this is an accurate picture of me giving Nakajima her deworming medication when I brought her home.

MY TORT HAS WORMS! EMERGENCY COMMS/KO-FI
Hi! My tortoise had a clump of worms in his stool today. He's been legarthic but still eating & pooping so I was confused about if he might be impacted or what. I completely didn't think it might be worms. I need to get him new substrate, a new heating pad, & I need to get him dewormer. I also need to pay my bills in 4 days. I haven't been eating bc I can't buy groceries bc I have no money. I'm very overwhelmed rn & art is my only source of income.
I need $70 by the 20th for my insurance payment. I also need at least $80 for new substrate, about $20 for a new heating pad, & tortoise-safe dewormer is about $40 for panacur & flagyl. Linking my comm info & ko-fi page below.

Guess who HATES THE VET and is still sulking about it
She's in good health! She does have pinworms, which I already knew, so she's on panacur. But otherwise, her blood values are normal and the vet techs all loved her. The vet understood entirely why she was keen on murder.
She was totally fine up until the blood draw. Do NOT poke the baby, she doesn't like it. She didn't try to bite, but she did try to yeet herself off the table, and tail whips were abundant. She had zero interest in a conciliatory freeze dried strawberry.
Anyways after this dose of panacur is over and we are sure there are no more worms , she gets to move into the full setup with actual substrate. As a reminder, she's on towels now to make it easier to monitor her elimination and overall health while she's acclimating.

Arlo had to take one dose of panacur this morning and have his nails trimmed. He only got one bite of banana after, not a whole banana. He would like the number for animal control, because he is clearly abused.

Have you ever wondered what planaria look like?
Planaria are a common freshwater aquarium pest and mine came into my tank hiding in some plants from a new LFS. They don’t pose much of a risk to fish but they will eat shrimp, fish eggs, and—surprisingly— snail eggs. They’ve been keeping my red ramshorn snail population under control, but they’re also taking their toll on my zebra shrimp.
Luckily, they’re pretty easy to get rid of. Believe it or not, I used a dog dewormer called Panacur to treat my tank. Panacur contains fenbendazole, which is fish and shrimp-safe but will kill these guys! My Indian zebra shrimp population has already doubled since treating the tank about 3 weeks ago.

PLEASE HELP ME SAVE MY DOG!!
I’m going to do something I’ve never done before on Tumblr and ask for some financial assistance because my baby boy needs help, and it’s not going to be cheap.
A bit of background… Seven years ago, I started working at a local rescue called Concerned Citizens for Animals. About a year after I started working there, we got in a litter of feral puppies. They were only about eight weeks old, but they had had practically no human contact up to that point and were absolutely terrified. They’d hide under things and growl or try to bite at you when you went to pick them up. The worst was a little red pup with a glassy looking eye (thought he might be blind in it—it later improved as he got healthier, but his vision in it still likely isn’t great).
I think because he couldn’t see well, he was even more afraid of the world than his siblings. The first time I picked him up, he SCREAMED bloody murder, bit me on the arm, and pooped himself because he was so scared. It took a long time of sitting quietly with him, tossing treats in his direction, and showing him my touch wasn’t going to hurt, but once we became friends, there was no turning back. He chose me, and I chose him. I named him Rufio after the leader of the Lost Boys in one of my favorite films, Hook, because like the character, he was a feisty little Lost Boy who put up a tough guy front but really just wanted a family of his own.
This boy became his mama’s absolute best friend in the whole world. He saw me through my first (emotionally abusive) marriage and subsequent divorce and even made an appearance as “Best Dog” in my second wedding.
Now, he’s six years old, and we’ve run into some health issues I never expected to see in him at such a young age.
Over the last month and a half, Rufio has been struggling with GI issues and gone from a healthy slim but muscular 42 lbs to under 35 lbs despite eating well. After trying just about everything imaginable (probiotics, Propectalin, metronidazole, panacur, special diets, etc.) without much success, the vet I now work for decided we needed to see a specialist, and they are starting to suspect GI lymphoma. They are likely going to need to do an endoscope biopsy and possibly also a CT scan. They have given us an estimate with the high end around $7000, and that’s not including any treatment if it does turn out to be cancer. If anyone is able to help, I would really appreciate it. I understand how easily people can make up scams, so rather than asking for money myself, donations can be made directly to Fetch Vet in Greenville, SC, under the pet name “Rufio Frantz.” Vet phone number is 864-900-5888.
Please help me figure out what’s going on and save my baby boy.
EDIT/UPDATE:
Final bill ended up being around $4500. I have already had to put it on the credit card, so you cannot send anything directly to the vet, unfortunately. My PayPal is [email protected]. Here is a copy of the bill for proof.
So far, I have about $525 in donations out of the $4500. The good news is that we now have results back and THANK GOD, it’s NOT cancer!! Unfortunately, that means it’s probably IBD, which means a little more trial and error with getting the exact treatment right, but it’s something he can live with and we shouldn’t need to do any more major tests anytime soon.

In Baltimore City, MD: Two perfectly adorable 5-week-old kittens are seeking rescue placement ASAP - BARCS, Baltimore MD
Chin Chin 1&2- 5 weeks, unaltered, 1M/1F
Chin Chin 1&2 were found by a Good Samaritan over the weekend without their mama. Despite being a little unsure in the shelter environment, these guys are vocal, easily handled, and cute as ever.
Upon examination, our vets noted that the Chin Chin kittens appeared overall pretty healthy, but had some audible congestion and occasional sneezing, so have been started on antibiotics. They also had some diarrhea in their carrier, which was parvo SNAP negative. Both are fortunately eating well at this time and a full medical summary can be provided upon request.
A shelter is no place for such young kittens to stay, so we are seeking immediate rescue placement for them.

Skinny PeeWee has hookworms. I should say "still" has hookworms as she had them when she left That Person's house and seems like she'll need another round of treatment. On the plus side, I haven't *seen* worms in her feces so it's not as bad as that time Sushi shat out a pile of wiggling spagetti 🤢 but it does explain why she lost weight (down to 45lbs from 53) despite having doubled her calorie intake.
Time for another round of panacur I suppose.

Today should have been the day for Lao Wen's and Alpha check-up and Lao Wen's vaccines. I decided to keep the appointment to make sure Alpha was okay. She's doing great for her age but she's having a Panacur treatment for a month to be safe if a parasite was the cause of death and I have to call back the clinic if I notice anything wrong with her (especially neurological)
It also allowed me to speak about what happened with the vet and try to understand.
I was not home last week so it was not my usual vet I saw but an emergency one and not specialized in exotic pet. Not that it would have changed anything in this situation.
I know that if i really wanted to know I could have asked for an autopsy but didn't want to.
Lots of kissies to all your pets 💚

Any1 that manages to give their tortoise an oral medication without hand feeding deserves an award & 10000 dollars. Just finally managed to give Bucky his panacur after like 3 hours. Me wedging his mouth open & my mom trying 2 get the syringe in his mouth. Hoping w everything in my body that he starts to get better.
Took him 2 the vet today, she said he looks happy & healthy (despite the worms). He;s on dewormer now. Have to wait to see what happens. Haven't eaten or slept the past few days bc i'm so sick with worry, & the deworming process is going to take a month. I'm going to die. But also I'm thinking positively, I hope his appetite returns & he starts pooping semi regularly soon. He's in his sterile paper towel storage bin & fucking pissed that he can't dig in his woodchips, also very cross w me bc I took him to a weird new place that smells like dogs & made him eat life saving goop. Sorry Bucky. get well soon

This is a really good question! Here's what will happen after New Girl gets here.
First, I leave her mostly alone for a couple of days. I give her constant access to fresh water, but I don't feed until Day 3. This gives her time to get settled and acclimated; the stress of the move can cause GI distress, so for the first couple of days, nothing in the stomach. The stress from regurgitation would be more detrimental than the stress of being hungry. Day 3, some nice, digestible food: egg. Day 4, we start introducing greens. Day 5, we have our first vet check!
Now hopefully there's some poop on Day 4, because this is a wild-caught animal, and she will have worms; that's just a given. When you eat raw, rotting meat in the wild, you get worms. My trapper doses them all with Panacur when he catches them, but the fecal sample will have more information on what specific parasites are present and what else is needed. If no poop for the vet check, that's ok, just collect some whenever it happens and take it on over and they'll do the fecal when they can.
At the vet check, they'll do a blood draw and a full blood panel. The vet will palpate all over, feeling for lumps and masses, and they may do some imaging. With a Florida feral, one thing you don't have to worry about is metabolic bone disease, so an x-ray might not be necessary. However, an ultrasound is a good idea with females. New Girl is very young and likely didn't have a partner during the last breeding season, but it's worth it to have a look at the reproductive tract to make sure there aren't any red flags or weird masses.
The vet will also do the standard exam stuff- listen to the lungs, check the reflexes, listen to the heart. They will also check tongue flicks and try to do a visual dental exam. That might not happen at the first visit, though! One of the things I had Kaiju trained to do was let me open her mouth. A voluntary open mouth behavior is something I really want to teach New Girl.
After the vet check, she'll still be on a fairly limited diet, variety-wise, until she's eliminating consistently and we've finished the inevitable course of meds. If all goes well, we'll do a course of fecal tests to ensure that any active parasite infection is gone, and then it'll be annual checkups from there on out!

Tiber’s vet called earlier today. Confirmed that he has had giardia, which is unfortunate but I’m glad we at least know what the issue is now and can address it. We’re dropping off a new stool sample tomorrow morning to see if the Panacur he was on last week helped any, or if he needs more robust treatment. In the meantime he’s been vomiting a little less, although still occasionally, and his stools have not consistently firmed up yet but are doing much better than before. Hopefully we can get this cleared up soon!
