Digimon and Fairy Tales - an ongoing thought experiment

This will just be a draft, because @jamesthedigidestined and I have been discussing the idea that... Digimon's creators may or may not have been inspired by Fairy Tales a LOT while writing their plot and characters.

(As mentioned, this will be an ongoing analysis, because I am pretty sure I haven't even grasped all of it yet.)

Let's begin with the most obvious ones:

Kizuna / Peter Pan

This one is pretty on the nose, because the term "Neverland" is quite literally used within the movie - and the analogy makes perfect sense. Peter Pan is described as a "free-spirited and mischievous young boy who can fly and never grows up, Peter Pan spends his never-ending childhood having adventures on the mythical island of Neverland as the leader of the Lost Boys, interacting with fairies, pirates, mermaids, and occasionally ordinary children from the world outside Neverland".

Menoa's plan is to lure all Chosen Children to Neverland, righteously convinced to fulfill their dream of never wanting to become adults and spend the rest of eternity with their Digimon partners... To her, this is an ideal world, an island of bliss and without pain - when in reality, it's nothing but escapism, unable to face reality and pain, forgetting about everything else and thus dooming them all to be lost in a world without change forever... Which is a fate almost as cruel as "death" itself.

On a different note, the Digital World itself - or at least File Island - may be compared to Neverland as well, as it allows the Chosen Children (= Lost Boys) to interact with all sorts of outlandish creatures as well.

Also, it may not be a coincidence that Menoa and Disney's depiction of Peter Pan share red hair...

Ken Ichijouji / The Snow Queen

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the screenshot of Ken getting "hit" by the Dark Spore, but... For the purpose of this comparison, this shall still do. In the fairytale "The Snow Queen" it is said that "the devil, in the form of a troll, has made a magic mirror that distorts the appearance of everything that it reflects. The mirror does not reflect the good and beautiful aspects of people and things but magnifies their bad and ugly aspects. The troll's minions take the mirror all over the world to distort everything, then carry it up to heaven to mock God and the angels. As they approach heaven, the mirror trembles and falls, shattering into billions of pieces. Some become windowpanes, some spectacles, and some get stuck in people's hearts and eyes, giving them a cold and bitter disposition."

A boy named Kai gets one of these shards stuck in his eye and turns, as mentioned, cold and bitter - and only his childhood friend, Gerda, after going out on a journey to find and bring him back from The Snow Queen, is capable of thawing the cold that has engulfed him.

"Ken" is already pretty close to "Kai" - and while he is somewhat becoming the Snow Queen himself by turning into the Digimon Kaiser, there are higher forces that influence him into taking on a completely different personality; namely, the Dark Spore (= the mirror shards) in his body that turns him vile and cruel in opposition to his naturally kind attitude. (One might also call Daisuke his personal Gerda in this context.)

Koushirou Izumi / The Little Mermaid

If you know my blog, you know I've been having fun with this comparison before, but let's start with the story. I'll try to summarize just the most important points:

"The Little Mermaid lives in a Utopian underwater kingdom with her widowed father, the Sea King, her paternal grandmother, and her five older sisters (...). The Little Mermaid is fascinated by the world above the sea, and human beings (...). Lonely and feeling isolated from her family, she yearns to explore the world above, and constantly asks her grandmother to tell her stories of humans. (...) The Little Mermaid, longing for the prince and an eternal soul, visits the Sea Witch who lives in a dangerous part of the ocean, surrounded by a forest of polyps, mud, and whirlpools. Although the witch warns the Little Mermaid that her attempts to win the love of the prince are doomed, she willingly helps her by selling her a potion that gives her legs in exchange for her voice (her tongue)."

Thus, we have a young, curious soul that not only feels isolated from their family, but also longs to learn more about another world... This already does sound familiar, doesn't it? In episode 24 of Adventure, Koushirou is caught by Vademon and told that his "desire" will lead him straight to hell - similarly to how the Sea With tells The Little Mermaid that her own desire is doomed. Granted, Koushirou's desire mainly refers to his endless curiosity, his "inquisite heart"... However, he IS also searching for a person (and depending on your interpretation of his urgency, him looking for Gennai indirectly also means that he's looking for Taichi, who had gone lost). In the Digimon Adventure novels, Koushirou isn't just throwing away his inquisite heart for the sake of achieving blissful ignorance and not getting drawn into hell - he loses the alphabet and thus, the ability to talk. The similarities are pretty striking there...

Additionally (similarly to Menoa), most people might be familiar with Disney's redheaded version of The Little Mermaid anyway, so I feel like the comparison fits even better.

The Seven Chosen Children (Plus One) / The Seven Ravens

While trying to research whether or not "Jack and the Beanstalk" has comparable elements to The Beginning, I stumbled over this one by chance - and was absolutely flabbergasted at the fact that it actually kinda works:

"A peasant has seven sons and no daughter. Finally a daughter is born, but is sickly. The father sends his sons to fetch water for her to be baptized. In their haste, they drop the jug in the well. When they do not return, their father thinks that they have gone off to play and curses them and so they turn into ravens.

When the sister is grown, she sets out in search of her brothers. She attempts to get help first from the sun, which is too hot, then the moon, which craves human flesh, and then the morning star. The star helps her by giving her a chicken bone and tells her she will need it to save her brothers. She finds them on the Glass Mountain but has lost the bone, and chops off a finger to use as a key. She goes into the mountain, where a dwarf tells her that her brothers will return. She takes some of their food and drink and leaves, in the last cup, a ring from home.

When her brothers return, she hides. They turn back into human form and ask who has been at their food. The youngest brother finds the ring, and hopes it is their sister, in which case they are saved. She emerges, and they return home."

Granted, we are talking about Seven Sons and not Seven Children in general - but the fact that the eighth sibling is a daughter and sickly already stuck out to me. Then of course there is the fact that the seven brothers disappear - and get turned into ravens, the equivalent of getting sent into another world, a MOUNTAIN (Infinity Mountain? Spiral Mountain???) of all places... And instead of them looking for the eighth child, the sister - our resident Hikari - is the one looking for them, with a ring being a key to finding them. (Also, the youngest brother HOPING to be found by the sister? Takeru? Is that you???)

The Beginning / Jack and the Beanstalk

I initally came up with this idea even before the movie came out - simply by looking at the poster and the giant golden tentacles that kinda reminded me of a beanstalk... Especially because eggs seemed to play a role again. The story itself doesn't share that many similarities, however, one could loosely relate them to one another:

Both Jack and Rui come from a - assumably - poor family and gain the chagrin of their respective mothers. Some magic beans that Jack received turned into a giant beanstalk - similar to how Rui's wish towards Ukkomon caused it to turn into a giant version of itself, containing thousands if not millions of digieggs.

Jack climbing up the beanstalk and turning towards an unfriendly giant's wife to wish for food is also reminiscent of the wish fulfillment aspect - his continuous wishing does get him in trouble with the unfriendly giant though, ending in a fight... But eventually, he gets a golden egg (!!!), gets out of trouble thanks to his wits, defeats the giant and will live happily ever after.

... Like I said, it's very loose, but I couldn't help but think about this.

Mimi Tachikawa / The Princess and the Pea

This one is also very loose in comparison to the previous ones - but the theme still fits: "The story tells of a prince who wants to marry a princess but is having difficulty finding a suitable wife. He meets many princesses, but is never sure that they are real princesses—until one stormy night, when a mysterious young woman drenched with rain seeks shelter in the prince's castle. She claims to be a princess, but the prince's mother, the queen, has doubts. She decides to test their unexpected guest by placing a hard uncooked pea in the bed she is offered for the night, covered by twenty mattresses and twenty featherbeds. In the morning, the mysterious woman tells her hosts that she endured a rather restless night, kept awake by something in the bed that made her feel uncomfortable. The prince's family realizes that she is a princess after all, since only a true princess could be so delicate."

Episode 25 of Adventure tells the story of Mimi getting welcomed into ShogunGekomon's castle, getting treated "like a princess" by the Gekomon and Otamamon, as they hope that her singing will wake their lord from his slumber. However, all the luxury is getting to Mimi's head, so she actually acts like a spoilt princess to the point of even throwing her friends into jail - until Sora reminds her of what's right and that she's actually a good, pure and delicate girl. Realizing her wrongdoings, Mimi's Crest of Sincerity (!) finally starts to glow. However, instead of marrying a prince, Mimi has to fight against ShogunGekkomon alongside Taichi and Jyou in the end...

Jing Yuan really does love his children, both you and Yanqing...but you two never seem to give him a break do you? From your brother always buying swords to you deciding to dramatically gasp about the future, causing them to be scared when all that happened was that they trip over a pebble the next day...

On a day where he wished he could be sleeping having done all his paperwork (or...most of them) Fu Xuan comes barging in dragging you behind her, glaring at the man. And although making people scared of their future is rather bad when you're a diviner...he can't help but chuckle sometimes Fu Xuan tries to make him lecture you.

Fu Xuan: General Jing Yuan, your kid started laughing when they saw someone's future. Jing Yuan: Is that so? What did they laugh at? Fu Xuan: A poor guy who got jump scared by a ca- Jing Yuan: Wheeze Ah ahem I mean, they did?

When you and Yanqing are hanging out together. It's either Yanqing being the responsible one and leading you out of trouble, or the other way around. Not one time have you two shared a brain cell and thought logically. At rare times, both of you would have no brain cells and Jing Yuan would have a Cloud Knight knocking at his office and bringing the two rascals who scared the trainee knights.

When Mimi first grew up and the family realised she was in fact a lion, you climbed on her back and began riding her around like a horse.

Honestly you give Fu Xuan a headache too sometimes. We already said you laugh at a divination you give that scares the other person but you also tend to act disgusted, concerned or any negative emotion when reading future moments...this can either lead to you telling them what happened which is usually such a small thing or you not telling them, simply stating "Can't say, ruins the future"

You probably stole a bunch of things from his room, it worked out for a bit as he wasn't sure where everything was going but you revealed yourself as the lil thief when you tried to steal his heavy sword. (It's a sword right? Or smt??)

You made Jing Yuan wear a powerpuff girls outfit once for Halloween. If he was a powerpuff girl or Dr whatever his name was I forgot, is up to you.

Jing Yuan seems like the type of guy to give kids the big chocolate bars for Halloween, so he needs to hide them from you and Yanqing before Halloween is here or else the kids won't have any as you snatched them with your lil brother.

I see that when you and Yanqing were younger, you tried dressing up as each other, wearing wigs and each other's clothing to try and trick Jing Yuan...however, your clothes were too big on Yanqing, and his clothes were too small on you.

Yanqing tried to jump scare you once when you were using the hose for something, needless to say. Yanqing came back in the house absolutely soaked.

Perhaps one day, the two of you dressed up as Jing Yuan, he found it so adorable!! He took so many pictures of the 'Mini Generals'...he may or may not have attempted to take a day off, gesturing to the 'Mini Generals' and how they would do the work.

Fu Xuan: General…they're kids, they're not ready for your job Jing Yuan: Kids! That want to be me, why not train them? Fu Xuan: General Jing Yuan: Ah, no fun Madam Fu, I'm going I'll do my work, I'll do my work.

He questioned if you were a dog in disguise when you were like 5 tbh. Cuz you bit a lot of things, heck he once came into a meeting with you hanging off his arm...by biting him...doesn't hurt him but he did question where you learnt that.

Yanqing was adopted as a kid, when Jing Yuan first came home with the lil guy, and introduced him to you as your younger brother...you tried to make him fly by throwing him off the kitchen counter, to which THANKFULLY Jing Yuan has the quick reflexes to save Yanqing, he scolded you of course. And hey, good thing Jing Yuan did save your brother as you wouldn't have your partner in crime otherwise.

Idk if I made the reader chaotic or not but hopefully this was alrightwfiof.

10. Justin x the Beetroots MC (headcanon)

Listen, I do NOT condone the whole “if they’re bullying you, that means they like you” bullshit. That being said, years and years later, after both of them have grown as people, I think they could have a really sweet relationship, at least after they work through everything.

9. André Beetroot x Xavier (canon, somehow)

I kind of ship this in a joking way, but also kind of not? They make sense together in a really weird, fucked-up way, and I’m so here for it. (I cannot believe that they’ve canonically hooked up. Multiple times. I love AJ so much for giving us this.)

It’s so toxic. It’s so toxic, and I know that, and it would never be okay in real life, but some dark part of me is really fascinated by the possibilities. (I cannot emphasise enough how much I am intrigued by this in FICTION ONLY.)

Complete turnaround from the last two, but these two are genuinely so sweet. I honestly don’t even have much to say about them, but I love them. So much.

They are so toxic. They’re horrible people, and they only make each other worse. And I love it. (You know, making this list did make me worry about my mental health slightly. Just slightly.)

5. Toby x the meth wife (canon)

First of all, this is the gayest straight-presenting relationship I’ve ever seen, and I love it. (I totally headcanon them both as bi/pan/queer/etc., but that’s not the point of this post.) And honestly, they’re so supportive of each other. They’re, like, genuinely a healthy couple (in a SFTH play? Can you imagine?). They have so much love for each other, and I could talk about them all day, but I’m fairly sure no one needs that, so I’ll stop.

4. Andrews x Betruva (headcanon)

Listen, I might be a little biased because they’re new, but they kind of have everything I look for in a ship. They have millennia of history, which is always a good start. They’re ancient nemeses. They founded a church named after them both???? Honestly how much more gay can you get?

3. Esmerelda x the vampire slayer (canon)

I like to imagine that Esmeralda survived, and they fall in love, and they have to work through the trauma of the slayer (I think I saw the fanon name Samantha? But I’m not sure) trying to kill Esmeralda. There’s just so much angst potential, and oh, now I want to write a fanfic.

2. Bubba x Jeramiah (canon)

They’re a fucking classic, okay, and they’re a classic for a reason. They are the best gay cowboys, and I love them so much. I know I should have more to say, but I feel like it would just be incoherent screaming.

Listen, who else could it be? They are so fundamentally amazing. It’s a classic case of “he fell first, he fell harder” (even if we don’t get to see a lot of the “he fell harder” part, I believe it with all my heart). I love Titch working though his issues and learning to open up, and I love Derek being so helplessly in love with him. I love them so much, and they deserve the top spot.

COOK WITH ME, YEAH? || ep.1 my ride or die, my other half

uploaded on january 15, 2024 to the bangtantv youtube channel and weverse. dialogue in italics are spoken in english

content warning: mentions tannies’ enlistments and separation anxiety (please tell me if i missed something)

miya: “hi everyone! welcome to my new series: cook with me, yeah?”

she started clapping, even cheering a little bit before reality hit her

she sighed and looked off camera

miya: “you know, you could cheer for me”

jungkook: “you said you’d do the intro before introducing me!”

she got the folded cloth from next to her on her kitchen counter and threw it towards the direction of the voice

there was a yelp, laughter, then cut back to a smiling yoonmi

miya: “i’m very open about my friends, and armys like to see that, so i decided to start this series and introduce some of my friends to you guys while cooking with them! while cooking, we’ll be answering first few set questions i’m always asked on weverse or instagram when i post with my friends, then a few questions more specific to us as friends that i found on twitter by lurking”

while she was talking, a few pictures of her with her various friends were shown on screen

she held up her phone when mentioning the set questions

she lifted a small fish bowl with slips of paper holding questions when mentioning the more specific ones

miya: “this friend, well, i’ve known him since i was eleven. nine? we use international age now��� anyway!”

she trailed off a little before laughing and waving her hand

miya: “we met as preteens, now we’re in our twenties. i literally can’t imagine life without him, he became my ride or die, and, because of how we were raised, he practically became my big emo-punk-looking soft boy other half. the oppas think we could have been twins in another life”

there’s soft thumps sounding from off camera

she looks over and starts laughing

miya: “he’s cringing and punching a pillow right now. everyone, welcome the person i’m sure you are all missing by the time this releases, jungkookie oppa!”

jungkook jogs in in his pastel pink apron cheering for himself while yoonmi clapped for him

jungkook did a little slide then a spin before bowing

yoonmi laughed at him, shoving him to the side

jungkook shoves her back then the video cuts to them standing together relatively calmly

jungkook: “i brought you chardonnay. i thought it would pair well with carbonara”

miya: “this looks good!”

jungkook passed her a two bottles of chardonnay, which she gratefully accepted

she pulled up two wine glasses and poured them some

they clinked their glasses together and finished their first glasses then she refilled them, setting them to a corner of the counter

miya: “like kookie oppa said, we’re making carbonara. want to explain why?”

jungkook: “namjoon hyung. he always talked about enjoying the carbonara in italy. mimi and i were talking about it when she was conceptializing these videos, so we decided to try”

miya: “shall we start, oppa?”

jungkook: “let’s go!”

the video cut to a clip of her filling a pot with water

there’s a clip of jungkook cutting up a slab of guanciale into cubes

when did you meet and what were your first impressions of each other?

miya: “contrary to popular belief, kookie oppa was very straightforward and blunt with me”

jungkook: “why? we became friends because of me”

miya: “i know! but people think we didn’t start talking until like weeks later”

jungkook snorted and looked at her while she added oil and salt into the pot over a flame

she looked at him

then she poked him with one of the uncooked noodles, which he swatted away

he turned on the other side of the stove and placed a pan on it, waiting for it to heat up

jungkook: “you were the only girl in the boys classes at the time. i thought you would be a vocal, but namjoon hyung said you were a rapper, so i was surprised. then i heard your satoori and got curious to find another busan kid in the company”

miya: “and you went straight up to me when you entered the training room. i was a little scared of you, but not really? i just didn’t know what to expect”

she brought out eggs and a bowl of pecorino romano cheese

jungkook started frying the guanciale

what are your names for each other in your cellphones?

miya: “kookie oppa? i have him saved as ‘ride or die’ with, like, the praise hands emoji”

jungkook: “i have mimi as ‘princess crazy’ with a crown”

she gave him a look, and he just gave her a smile

there’s then a clip of her cracking the last of the eggs into the cheese, adding pepper, then starting to whisk everything together

jungkook: “yoonmi is music”

miya: “what?”

jungkook: “you literally live and breathe music. you're in your studio all the time, you always look for music to add to your playlists, and it seems like everything you do is very musical. the way you move in general has a rhythm, and the way you speak has a melody"

miya: "... you're nice to me today"

jungkook: "so i deserve a nice answer"

he took the pan off the heat and took the bowl and whisk from her

he gave her an expectant look while whisking while she just thought while fixing the pasta into the now boiling water

miya: "i think you're excellence. everything you do, you do it very well and to the best of your abilities. when you find something you struggle with, you work your hardest to become good at it. you're practically excellence as a person"

they met eyes then cringed before laughing

jungkook exaggerated his aggression with whisking the contents of the bowl while yoonmi walked off to the side

the video cuts to them clinking glasses and drinking their glasses of wine, now just waiting for the pasta to cook

what’s your favorite memory together?

jungkook: "that's hard to answer, mimi"

miya: "true, we've been friends for so long and together almost daily, so there's way too much to choose from"

jungkook sipped at his wine again

jungkook: “maybe when we wrote ‘stay’? do you remember that?”

miya: "when we slept in my studio for like three days?"

jungkook: "we cried, made jokes, watched movies, didn't namjoon hyung physically drag us to eat food that wasn't instant ramen?”

they laughed at the memory

yoonmi lit up at a thought

miya: "oppa, vegas!"

jungkook: "oh yeah! you weren't legal in america yet, so you couldn't go to the ptd parties in the bars"

miya: "but you took me around vegas for food and to look at all the different light and water shows! it may sound boring, but we had a lot of fun there"

there's a clip of yoonmi gently stirring the pasta then of jungkook pouring more wine for them

how often do you two have sleepovers?

jungkook hummed while thinking

jungkook: “a lot, actually. i slept over at mimi's a lot for a while to help her take care of yoonseollie and the puppies back before she graduated. nowadays, we sleepover in each other's house just whenever we feel like it"

miya: "yeah, but we still see each other almost everyday even without the sleepovers. oppa, the pan?"

what was it like working on jungkook’s solo album together?

jungkook: "oh, yoonmi wrote ‘yes or no’ back in 2018, if you all know what was going on then"

he wiggled his eyebrows at the camera, making shove him to the side

he pulled her into a noogie while she squeaked in surprise and started to hit his arm

jungkook: "she was falling in love! this kid! look at her, falling in love so young!"

miya: "oppa, let go!"

jungkook: "i still remember the first time you admitted you might have been in love"

miya: "oppa!"

she stomped on his foot, making him let go

she was fixing her hair while he laughed at her

miya: “in all seriousness, oppa told me right away when he started pulling golden together that he wanted to use ‘yes or no’ and to have me feature on a track he’d promote, so i edited ‘yes or no’ just a bit then i listened to ‘seven’ to start writing my verse.”

jungkook: "it was comfortable, you know? a sense of familiarity. then i wanted to make a song for army, and mimi actually translates my thoughts best, so we wrote please don't change together in a music style similar to one we've been listening to a lot. you know songs used for dancehall?"

miya: "I've been listening to a lot of latin and afro beat music"

she looked at him then threw a noodle at his face, which he ate

jungkook bent to pet the dogs

jungkook: "you don't see her, but nala is here, too"

miya: "our pets are siblings. they all go to stay with my brother or kookie oppa's brother when both of us are busy, so they bond a lot"

she turned the stove off then opened the freezer jungkook looked up and pointed at something yoonmi pulled out a small tray with frozen treats

they gave them to the dogs who all scattered away after receiving treats then they washed their hands

miya: "this next part needs extreme focus, so excuse us for being silent for a moment"

jungkook: "mimi, i think the pan is the right temperature"

there's a clip of jungkook pouring the sauce and adding the guanciale into the noodles while yoonmi mixed it

jungkook placed the bowl down

yoonmi looked at him, so he got a bit of the pasta water and added it into the pan

jungkook: "hyung, let go!"

they're all speaking through laughs

yoonmi speaks up

miya: "jimin oppa is here to try our pasta, and he has the special honor of reading us the last question! but first, have a bite, oppa”

yoonmi handed him the third plate while jungkook handed him a fork

jimin twirls a bit of the pasta onto the fork, laughing a little about how awkward it was to do that while the two were watching him

he takes a bite, tilting his head before humming in approval

he swallowed and looked at the two

jimin: "this tastes really good, babies! i think it's a 100 out of 100!"

she grinned while jungkook handed him his glass of wine

yoonmi held up the fishbowl of questions for him while placing the plate back on the table

miya: "now the last question, oppa"

jimin stuck his hand into the bowl, swirling it around while giggling at the two maknaes

he pulls one out and reads it to himself first before chuckling and taking another sip of wine

jimin: "I'm curious, too, actually"

jungkook: "then read the question, hyung”

how does it feel knowing jungkook is about to enlist?

yoonmi visibly tensed while jungkook’s head snapped to the side to look at her

jimin put his free arm around her and rubbed her arm comfortingly

miya: “i’ve been seeing my therapist about this, and she said it would be a challenge for me. the oppas and i always talk and hangout, especially me and ggukoo oppa who talk to each other daily and see each other almost everyday. i’m honestly scared, but i’ll have to push through. i can do it. i think i can”

jungkook: “i’m honestly very sad about this. mimi and i are used to going to each other for almost any and everything we can think of, and we have gotten used to each other a lot. while i am worried about her given her separation anxiety, i’m also a little scared for myself, especially for the five weeks of basic training where i won't be able to talk to or be updated with her at all”

jimin: “don’t worry, babies. i have people to watch over our princess, i’ll be watching over jungkookie, and this will all pass by very quickly. just you wait”

jimin leaned his head on jungkook’s then turned to kiss the top of yoonmi’s head

the video cuts to them with finished plates and empty glasses, all smiling towards the camera

yoonmi, now seated in the middle, spoke

miya: “that brings an end to this first episode of cook with me, yeah? thank you to kookie oppa and jiminie oppa for coming to spend the day with me! if any one of you would like to try what we made at home, the recipe will be in the description! see you next episode!”

the three of them wave to the camera, then the video cuts to black

after a few seconds, jimin appears sitting in what looks like yoonmi’s home office with a question along the bottom of the screen

what do you think of miya and jungkook’s friendship?

jimin: “it’s a treasure. you don’t see friendships like theirs often where they’re raised together by the same group of people while experiencing the same things. our maknae and makdungie developed a connection over the years that us hyungs and oppas ourselves can’t understand, but they understand each other, they have fun, they keep each other in line, and they do love each other. i’m pretty sure they were twins in another life. but, yes, their friendship is like a rare treasure”
