The Truth About Buddhism
Tumblr media
There are a lot of misunderstood messages about Buddhism on Tumblr and the internet generally. There is also some very good information but it is hard for the beginner to separate what is real and what is what back in the old days people called “Bumper Sticker Buddhism” but these days it would be more like “Two Line Blog Post Buddhism”.
You know what I’m talking about. Buddhism quotes taken out of context or made up entirely. Quotes that make the Buddha sound like a monotheist (he wasn’t) or an eternalist (he wasn’t). A mystic (he talks about “direct experience” so maybe). A lot of this comes from Westerners fascination with Zen which though poetic is rife with cryptic quotes like “if you see the Buddha on the road kill him” and “what was your original face before you were born”.
Meaningful to one familiar with core Buddhist principles. Dense as mud to others who think a Zen koan is one of those “magic eye” images that you stare at then it suddenly turns into a recognizable picture. See the picture? Boom. Now you’re enlightened pick up your diploma at the door. No. It doesn't work this way.
Buddhism has grown into this great giant of a cultural octopus with mountains of commentaries and books by wise old sages and Westerners like Watts and Kapeleau.
The Buddha said that he taught this single principle in four parts: Suffering (Dukkha), the Truth of the Arising of Suffering (Samudaya),  the Truth of the Cessation of Suffering (Nirodha) and the Truth of the Way to the Cessation of Suffering (Magga).
He also taught ethics. One must be right with the universe and with other people before we can attain a state of enlightenment.
He outlined how to do it in many of his discourses, his lessons often take the form of “dialogs” between the Buddha and one or more others.
Want to attain enlightenment? Here’s how you do it. The Buddha taught us:
Satipatthana Sutta: The Foundations of Mindfulness translated from the Pali by Nyanasatta Thera.
It’s all there: the Truths, the Way and even instructions on how to meditate. This is what the Buddha taught. It was thought important enough that before writing this was memorized by groups of six monks so nothing would be changed or added.
That sutta is accepted by all branches of Buddhism Theravada, Mahayana and Vajrayana. They all agree on the accuracy of these oldest suttas.

“No,” rispose velocemente Martino, “per carità. No.”
“Dai, mozzarellina. Guarda che ti scotti.”
“Non si può fare. No, no.”
Niccolò sorrise compiaciuto.
“Va bene. Come vuoi.”
“I miei occhiali?”
“Mettiti in posa.”
“Assolutamente no.”

Biography/Headcanons
Keo spent the first thirteen years of her life in Pakse, Laos with her wealthy parents in what was once considered the Champasak Palace, a palace that was built by the former Royal family in the twentieth century. Considered one of the most wealthy families in the city, sometimes even the country, she had an overly comfortable life as she grew up and spent the majority of it in ignorant bliss to the sufferings of the people around her. Spoiled and naïve, Keo couldn’t quite understand why most of her classmates didn’t enjoy having her around very often until she hit adolescence and started to see the major difference between her life and the life of many of her friends, most of whom were stuck in bad situations due to a corrupt Royal family that her father actually worked for.
As a very skilled computer scientist, Keo’s father ran the intelligence division that helped keep the Laotian Royal family safe but somewhere along the way the man ended up with information that he was not supposed to know, information that could help overthrow the Royal family if the word got out. As a result, the Royals decided that his reputation, and his life, must be destroyed in an attempt to discredit anything the man said just in case he decided to talk. This resulted in the loss of his job, the steady decline of the Noy family finances, and the murder of her mother as retaliation for her father fighting back. But after the Royal family was done with him Keo’s father could no longer speak out for himself without most of the country feeling as if he were making up lies as retaliation of his own for his now broken life or feeling that the man deserved it for working to keep such people safe the majority of his long career. The Royals were able to spin the headlines in a way that worked for them and against Keo’s father and a year after her mother’s death the Noy family was living in ruins.
At the suggestion of a family friend, Keo’s father moved them to the small Thai town that now houses the royals by happenstance so that they could escape the cruelties that came with their new reality and as soon as Keo settled into their tiny cottage in the village she made sure to have her father teach her everything he knew about computers and the cyber world. She was determined to find ways to help families like theirs, people who were given no choices in life other than misery and destruction of their character, by finding out and exposing as much information as she could, information that would ultimately work to bring down the Monarchies and their cruel ways of staying in power. But she had to start somewhere before she could figure out the more radical options, learn the security she needed to stay anonymous behind her computer so that she could slip by without the monarchies noticing they were taking any hits. Headlines concerning the secrets of Royals all over the world can be credited to Keo but most only know her by the name _Void_. These days she’s almost impossible to track down which is why she had to send her own invitation to the rebellion’s cyber team to let them know what she could do as soon as she realized through internet sleuthing they were in Thailand. Ever since she was approached by her mentor, only after letting her presence be known, she has been feeding as much information about not only her hometown and the people that could easily be influenced to join the cause but about the royalty she has befriended since they had arrived in town. She was one of the first in Khatanga to be recruited and is in a probationary period as an initiate into the rebellion.
Years in the online world have been good to Keo. At an early age she learned a lot about investing and has made some very informed decisions with money that her mother had smartly put in a trust for her so she was able to become wealthier than the average person around town in a matter of time. She could have moved long ago but her father and the people she loves are all in Thailand so she chose to stay not only for them but because she also knows she can do a lot of good in the town that raised her. The one fun thing she has done with her money is The Lilac. She owns an underground speakeasy for the town that only lets in a select clientele. Keo has been feeding the passwords to get into the establishment to the rebellion so they could have a more private place to discuss their plans, especially between the higher ups. Lately she’s been letting a few of the Royals and their staff in on the establishment and the passwords to get in with hopes that they would feel more comfortable participating in acts that would most likely condemn them in their own countries. When she’s not out and about in town she can be found at the underground bar waitressing and being as friendly as possible with the patrons. Keo is aware that many unsavory things happen in her establishment but she also knows most of these acts are for the good of everyone’s futures. She’s willing to turn a blind eye to most, participate in a few as well, but if anything gets too out of hand she would definitely intervene.
She’s an initiate in the rebellion and therefore desperately willing to prove herself to her leaders in hopes to gain more responsibility in the cause. Keo is willing to put herself in certain situations to achieve her goals and it includes doing almost anything that she can to get closer to the royals. She just wants to be part of a change, to say that she contributed to making the world better, so her morals are far outweighed by her goals. A lot of what she does is working with security and the cyber intelligence that is involved and with her experience she pretty much outranks most of the people in that area of study already in terms of skill level. Unfortunately, she still hasn’t officially made it into the rebellion just yet.
She doesn’t hate most Royals, she just feels that a monarchy isn’t the best way to go about ruling a country and that they are far too easily corrupted when it comes to power. While she might feel bad about giving up information and actively working to destroy these people’s lives she will continue to do so to work towards a bigger goal and a better future for the world they’ll leave behind. She chooses to focus on her background when she starts to feel closer to a Royal so that she can work past the guilt that will start to eat away at her. Remembering her own past, the monarchy that destroyed her life and killed her mother, is the only thing that fuels her desire to abolish the system as a whole.
Since she is more fortunate than most, and she remembers all too well what it’s like to have nothing, she’s been known to help out whenever help is needed. She’s not able to save everyone but if someone is low on their luck, and wages, and has had a pretty bad week she will comp any drinks or food that you’d like at her establishment. She fills people’s kitchens from time to time and lends a hand in replenishing a closet when it’s desperately needed. She’s got a heart of gold and is kind to everyone she meets, which is why it would be shocking if people learned that she was a part of something so sinister that had taken over the town. Despite having money she tries not to flaunt it or make it well known and most of her good deeds are anonymous, especially considering pride is a big deal in the village and most people wouldn’t accept her help otherwise.

Share ten facts about yourself, then send this to your ten favorite followers :) 😘💖👍💞
Fiddlesticks, I don’t even think my personality has enough storage space for 10 things... but I’ll try
1. I am a big ol’ gay. And very trans. Girls=yes.2. I currently attend high school in North Idaho but “fuck “High School’”, I said. This summer. Because high school is Hell. So I started doing this program where basically I go to college and get credit for both a degree and my high school diploma and I don’t even have to step foot on my high school’s campus and it is so amazing.3. I’m doing a paid tech internship this summer and also working for my school and also taking classes so I’m dying but it’s alright because at least I’m keeping myself out of my house for as long as possible.4. My favorite shows are Community and Doctor Who5. I just started taking testosterone blockers because testosterone for trans girls is living Hell so I’m really f***ing psyched for that.6. My bedroom is painted with the bottom third of the walls grey, the rest of the walls purple, and the ceiling grey, and it’s marvelous and makes my room feel twice as big as it is. I also only use LED lights to light it (I have a little remote control thingy that controls a strand that goes all the way around the top of my room)7. I have two pet birdies called Ari and Pali and Ari is a little rebellious teen birb who bites and screams at all hours of the day and Pali is a smol scared little bab who won’t even let you touch him he’ll just fly away and won’t let you be affectionate ever and I love them so much with all my heart 8. I’m a total nerd. I love all things science and math and history and literature. I also enjoy video games a great deal, and am always on my computer for one reason or another.
9. I love to go on walks. Every couple of days I go on like a two hour walk and listen to music and make up stories in my head and daydream (mostly about being the Communist dictator of an imaginary nation I created in my head to satisfy my desire for world domination without actually having to hurt anyone because I could never hurt anyone ever and the very thought of being even the slightest bit threatening in real life haunts me)
10. Apparently I can count to ten, so that’s a plus. Cool.I don’t have ten favorite followers I think I have like three people that actually pay attention to my blog and one of them is Wren and the other two are mice sitting at a keyboard deep in the Australian outback in a tiny shack where no one will ever find them typing randomly, but I’ll do my best.
