How to make the walk through the Samaria gorge *

"Found poem", all the text lifted from a tourist pamphlet picked up in Crete, only very slightly edited.

There are daily buses starting from Chania to the head of the gorge, which is called Xyloskalo. Buses say on the front "Omalos" and depart from the central bus station. By taking any of the morning buses you get to Xyloskalo after one and a half hours. At Xyloskalo there is a tourist pavilion where you can get meals, drinks, and which has only seven beds for staying overnight. For those wishing to spend the night on the Omalos plateau there is another possibility, that of staying at Omalos village itself, five kilometres before Xyloskalo, where are two cafés providing several beds. From there you get any of the morning buses starting from Chania to the head of the gorge. The length of the gorge is sixteen kilometres, and you need five to six hours to walk through it. There is plenty of drinking water all along the gorge. Tennis shoes or walking boots are recommended. Camping, overnight staying, smoking, hunting, cutting and uprooting plants are forbidden. At the mouth of the gorge is Aghia Rouméli village, which provides restaurants and accommodation. From there you take boats either to Sfakía (duration: one hour) or to Soughia and Paleochora. Remember that the last boat to Sfakía is at 17 hours, which connects with the last bus to Chania at 18 hours. Duration of the bus trip: two hours.

beim täglichen blick in den spiegel fallen zwei dinge auf: die anspannung weicht und der bart wächst. die agenda des heutigen freitags wird also ein wenig um einen barbershopbesuch herum geplant und auch wenn die auswahl in der provinz eher bescheiden ist, so soll es in palechora wohl gleich zwei optionen geben. also nichts wie hin.

unweit von elos verlassen wir bekanntes terrain. die straßen im hinterland sind kaum befahren und werden gefühlt immer schmaler. nur selten begegnet uns ein auto. eines davon erkenne ich aber sofort wieder. es ist das des ersten bäckers, der uns am ankunftstag in perivolia so herzlich versorgt hat. kurzer hand mache ich kehrt. die hysterische vorfreude auf ein leckeres olivenbrot erhält jedoch einen jähen dämpfer. er versteht mich nicht. also wirklich überhaupt gar nicht. trotz aller pantomimischen bemühungen und der einbindung fremder kann ich bloß ein ganz normales brot erwerben. dieses ist zwar auch sehr lecker, entfesselt aber keinen hype.

als wir nach rund einer stunde gänzlich entschleunigt an der südküste ankommen und sich das libysche meer weit vor uns auf tut, werden die straßen schlagartig besser. an den stränden stehen schirme und auch sonst gibt es viele anzeichen für ein gewisses treiben. wir haben eine der am schnellsten wachsenden touristischen regionen griechenlands erreicht, die es ganz offensichtlich auf angenehme art und weise schafft ihren scharm zu bewahren – stand heute.

palechora, ein kleines hafenstädtchen im äußersten südwesten kretas, ist das westliche pendant zu chora sfakion. über dieses drehkreuz gelangen viele wanderer per fähre zur samaria-schlucht. außerdem gibt es zahlreiche bootstouren zum strand von elafonisi. wegen seiner besonderen geografischen lage, am rande des hohen gebirges, ist paleochora obendrein der sonnenreichste punkt der gesamten insel. die häuser des charmanten örtchen reihen sich, einstmals geschützt von einem fort, entlang einer schmalen landzunge dichtgedrängt auf. es gibt keine hotelbunker oder andere größere gebäude und es wird auch kaum ein zimmer mit halbpension angeboten. folglich können sich einheimischen wie besuchern über eine lebendige restaurant und tavernenszene freuen. die gasen laden zum flanieren ein ... und es gibt einen herrenfriseure, der obendrein zeit hat.

chico, der barber meines vertrauens, hat mir besorgt ein paar kniffe mit auf den weg geben, woran ich einen fähigen dienstleister erkenne. allen voran soll ich auf das werkzeug achten. da nicht bloß ein gerät der firma wahl im betrieb ist, scheine ich mich vertrauensvoll in fremde hände begeben zu können. ich muss ein wenig warten, aber da ich sarah und leni auf der anderen straßenseite in einem café gut versorgt weis, stört mich diese zwangspause überhaupt nicht. mein kreter mit den scherenhänden strahlt eine große ruhe aus, die durch seine rauchige, dunkle stimme abrundend untermalt wird. routiniert fegt er mir über den kopf und durch meinen bart. binnen ein paar minuten verliere ich, rein optisch, mal wieder ein paar jahre. eυχαριστώ πάρα πολύ!

frisch frisiert, freue ich mich nun auf eine ausgiebige erkundungstour. zu allererst flanieren wir zum keinen fähranleger, dann weiter die promenade entlang, vor zum kap und hinauf auf den festungshügel. für die alten gemäuer interessieren wir uns am heutigen nachmittag, angesichts der vorherrschenden temperaturen, nicht. lediglich für das panorama über das städtchen, mit den bergen im hintergrund, gehen wir die höhenmeter an. auf dem weg zurück ins zentrum kommen wir dann bei 'castro restaurant & cafe bar', einer schicken rooftopbar, vorbei und auch wenn vieles dagegensprechen müsst, verspüre ich den drang mich hier niederzulassen. die sitzecken sind einfach zu verlockend und auch die dezente musik zieht uns in ihren bann. der ausblick ist phantastisch ... und ich habe tierische lust auf einen gin tonic. halb drei eben.
