Matera (Basilicata). Piazzetta Pascoli. In front of the Lanfranchi palace is positioned the contemporary work of art "The drop" (la goccia) by Kenjiro Azuma (1926-2016), a famous Japanese sculptor and painter. The work is in bronze and is over three meters high, purchased by the Basilicata region in 2010. In reality the title of the work is "MU 765 G". It was chosen because it testifies to the perennial cycle of human life, which like the cycle of water, the first drop that bathes the earth, then evaporates in the sky and then returns to earth. It also represents the difficulties of Matera to have water and to live in evident difficulties undaunted over time, in the difficult conditions experienced over the millennia in the Sassi caves. Matera (Basilicata). Palazzo Lanfranchi (1668). At the end of the first stretch of via Ridola, where the square in front takes the name of Piazzetta Pascoli, is the palace designed by friar Francesco Da Copertino and commissioned by the archbishop Vincenzo Lanfranchi to host the seminary, also incorporating the pre-existing convent of the Carmine. After the military occupation of the Savoys, in 1864, the palace was used as a high school, where Pascoli taught. In the eighties of the twentieth century the building housed the Superintendency for the Artistic and Historical Heritage of Basilicata and since 2003 it has been the home of the National Museum of Medieval and Modern Art of Basilicata, divided into the sections: Sacred Art, Collectibles (with paintings), Contemporary Art and Ethno-anthropological. A barbaric cemetery has been found inside. On the ground floor, on the right, there is access to a chapel, now used for conferences, concerts, projections and exhibitions.
