Matera (Basilicata). Piazzetta Pascoli. In front of the Lanfranchi palace is positioned the contemporary work of art "The drop" (la goccia) by Kenjiro Azuma (1926-2016), a famous Japanese sculptor and painter. The work is in bronze and is over three meters high, purchased by the Basilicata region in 2010. In reality the title of the work is "MU 765 G". It was chosen because it testifies to the perennial cycle of human life, which like the cycle of water, the first drop that bathes the earth, then evaporates in the sky and then returns to earth. It also represents the difficulties of Matera to have water and to live in evident difficulties undaunted over time, in the difficult conditions experienced over the millennia in the Sassi caves. Petersham Nurseries Covent Garden More than a decade after opening in Richmond, the family behind the wonderfully bucolic ‘Petersham Nurseries' are planning another garden-related opening. This time, they're opening their second venture in Covent Garden. It'll focus around a central courtyard with access from King Street and Floral Street. ‘Petersham Nurseries Covent Garden’ will feature two restaurants ‘La Goccia’ and ‘The Petersham’ a lifestyle home and garden shop and a delicatessen with a wine cellar and florist. ‘Petersham Nurseries’ a garden centre in Richmond, was developed out of the Petersham House grounds in the 1970s. In the late 1990s, the business was bought by Gael and Francesco Boglione who have, with their family, lived in the adjoining ‘Petersham House’ in Richmond since 1997. After extensive restoration works, the nurseries reopened in 2004 and included the glasshouse restaurant — ‘Petersham Nurseries Café’. The garden centre café famously won a Michelin star under chef Skye Gyngell (who is now the chef-patron of ‘Spring’ in ‘Somerset House’) in 2011. Olive trees and olive oil where brought to Sicily by the Greeks and the Phoenicians in the centuries before the Common Era. Today, the island region is one of Italy's most prolific producers of this liquid gold that has many health benefits and uses--from cooking to soap to moisturizer. Feudotto, imported in the US by Gelsomino Imports, LLC, is an artisinal producer of olive oil based in Menfi, Agrigento and Castelvetrano, Trapani. They create three varietals of extra virgin olive oil--each with a distinct taste one more earthy and spicy, with tomato and artichoke overtones, while the others are fruity, citrus-y, almond-y, and peppery... Just like wine, olive oil takes on the flavors of the air and earth around the trees. Feudotto harvests the olives by hand (no machines here!) at the beginning of veraison, or when the olives begin to change color before they ripen too much.
