ballister boldheart
ballister is shown to be gay early on into the film nimona (2023) and his relationship is important throughout the film. although ballister's race is never specified (probably due to the fantasy setting), his appearance resembles his voice actor riz ahmed, who is british pakistani.
#ballister boldheart#ballister blackheart#nimona#extra: this character dates another queer poc#gay#editor note: not tagging ballister as pakistani as this likley doesn't reflect the character

give me muslim james and muslim potters.
indian-muslim monty whose family moved generations ago but still has land and family to visit, who speaks fluent hindi and gives back to his community; who builds a mosque near potter house for wizarding muslims, who is the epitome of kindness.
give me a pakistani effie, who moved to study at hogwarts and falls in love with the only other boy that understands what it’s like to be a brown person in a white room; who wears her hijab and loves her identity, even if she did struggle with this new world. who travels back to pakistan to visit her family and siblings and makes sure that james knows his family outside of england. who is fierce and fights for her rights, who is bold in both muggle and wizarding spaces because she is muslim first and wizard second.
give me a james who understands hindi and urdu fluently, and has more fun memories in pakistan with his cousins than in england as a boy; that goes to the mosque, and learns the pillars of islam, who prays with his father, learns with his mother. who doesn’t drink because a) religion and b) quidditch, but will nurse his hungover friends and watch with joy as they make fools of themselves. who bonds with lily because she doesn’t drink either, and that’s how they become friendly (eventually). who accidentally eats pork in first year and cries about it, so sirius, remus and peter go to the house-elves and ask them specially to ensure that halal meats are separated and labelled, so it doesn’t happen to other students. who teaches the boys how to do wudu and prays five times a day.
give me a james that grapples with his identity as a muslim boy because there is no one like him. who struggles with his bisexuality but remembers that allah loves all, and that his relationship to god is his and no one else’s. a james that might not be the perfect muslim, because who is, but tries his best. a james that marries lily, an atheist girl, and doesn’t expect her to convert because he loves her. and that’s all that matters.
a lily that adores james enough that she’ll learn about the prophets and allah, who is fascinated by religion and prays with james - especially during the war - so he feels less alone, even if it does mean james speaking aloud so she knows what to do. a lily that doesn’t teach harry because she never has the chance, but would if she could, even if she doesn’t expect him to be muslim at all. because the potters are nothing if not tolerable and loving of all.
a james that is buried in the islamic area of godric’s hollow, his body cleaned and prayed upon by remus, who stumbles along the words and can’t quite keep up, but loves james enough that he’s willing to do so. a mary that cleans lily’s body the same way, even if she wasn’t a muslim, just so she can be buried with james.
give me a harry that goes to a mosque after learning about his heritage, and finds solace in islam; a religion that is peaceful, after a life so chaotic. who visits pakistan with ginny, and finds a whole family that he can call his own. a harry that might not call himself a muslim, but respects and learns because his dad did. a harry, who was alone but is not anymore.

Uh guys, in case you aren't all caught up, the graphic novel that started as a little queer comic on Tumblr by ND Stevenson (creator of Shera: Princesses of Power) has been adapted by Netflix into an adorable movie about the contemporary genderqueer experience. Go watch Nimona. RIGHT NOW. (Also read the book!)
The movie also features an API gay couple. Ambrosius Goldenloin is an Asian American descendant of the revered knight, Gloreth, and he dyes his hair blonde to match hers and fit the white saviour image that the public expects from him. He is manipulated golden child of a conservative white woman trying to assert control over the kingdom. Ballister Boldheart is a darker-skinned (desi! muslim!) British Pakistani sweetheart who had to bootstrap his way to the top and still couldn't win model minority status with the head of the institute, and is framed for crimes he didn't commit and condemned by the state. The character designs are both modeled after their voice actors, Eugene Lee Yang and Riz Ahmed. Both actors have done extensive DEI work for the API LGBTQ+ community and visibility!
They are archenemies. They are lovers. They are husbands but also kind of divorced. They will find their way back to each other because they are simply victims of the same system, and they are just so soft for each other and what they want to protect. They are also Nimona's dads. They're slightly different from how they were in the book, but I'm so glad for the changes. And I'm so glad for what remained exactly the same as ND Stevenson envisioned years ago:

Minority in Medicine
So far in medical school, I have never had a patient of my own race. Having done rotations all around Georgia, I'm suspect I'm a lot of people's "first." Their first Muslim. Their first Pakistani. Hell, maybe even the first Queer person they've ever met.
But I have to admit that it has not caused me too much strife. Aside from confused looks accompanied by "but where are you from from?" when I tell patients I'm from Atlanta and that time a nurse asked to call me Aladdin because she kept forgetting my name, I don't have too much to say. This is in contrast with my other peers who, on their rural rotations are denigrated by attendings or mistaken for janitorial staff by patients.
However, one of these same peers also told me of an impactful interaction she had in southwest Georgia where she worked at a facility that historically has only had white providers. She stepped into a patient's room to see his face light up —he had lived there his whole life, and had never had a physician who shared the same skin color as him.
I had a similar interaction when I was in northwest Georgia, with a patient who was gay and HIV positive. It felt like other providers were harsh on him, but I found him to be one of my most pleasant patients! These experiences reminded me how important it is to be comfortable with traversing our diverse identities, especially as physicians.
Since day one of medical school, we're prompted to learn about the injustices that have been committed against minoritized communities throughout America's history and examine our own biases. Patients do better when they can see themselves in their provider. Much of the discussion around improving racial health disparities in healthcare revolves around promoting diversity and equity in our medical education.
This can be reflected in diversifying our incoming medical school classes, and learning from our peers and patients who come from different backgrounds from us.

Anupama Chopra interview with maker of Joyland Saim Sadiq at Cannes
youtube
The point where she pointed out how even the smaller characters in the film are made part of the larger theme of desires and attraction and Saim saying it would be dishonest to the culture if the story was just individual story and whatever you do always has an impact on others so all of them have to be connected...
#joyland#pakistani queer#desi queer#desi lgbt#i watched this#now ill watch the movie#and watch the interview again#Youtube
