May 26th, 5 – 6 pm PDT Pathfinder 2E on Fantasy Grounds Unity Bryce will walk you through the resources available for online virtual tabletop (VTT) play using Fantasy Grounds Unity. He'll introduce the built-in Pathfinder 2E ruleset, available modules, how to build a character, level up, run an adventure, encounters, combat, and as much as he can fit in one hour!
May 28th, 9 – 10 am PDT Digital Map Tools in Fantasy Grounds Unity Joshua will introduce Fantasy Grounds Unity and how it can work with Paizo's Flip-Tiles, Flip-Mats, and map packs to enable online or local virtual tabletop play for Pathfinder and Starfinder. He'll cover using dynamic line of sight, snapping tiles into place, manipulating tiles, adding or modifying lights, adding FX, and using image brushes for advanced effects. Using this in-game allows for preplacement of encounters, linking story entries, hiding and revealing enemies automatically, opening and closing doors and windows, and approval of player movement.

To the Stars and Beyond!
A bunch of interesting things happened at PaizoCon this weekend, the most fascinating for me was something completely internal. Pathfinder wasn't the game I was focused on. Given all of the reveals about War of the Immortals, the announcement of Spore War, and about 9000 other things related to the planes, that may be surprising.
But no, this time the main event was Starfinder.
Tumblr media
While I never got to play as much of 1e as I would've liked, I've been eagerly awaing Starfinder 2e, both as the playtest and in its final form. Starfinder's blend of science-fantasy from properties like Star Wars, Doom, and 40k took a while to grow on me, but it has solidly become one of my favorites. Plus, even in 1e, Starfinder had a lot of planar content baked into the setting. Made an argument on Twitter and BlueSky when I'm feeling spicy that between Pathfinder and Starfinder, it is the latter that is better set up to be a successor to Planescape. And oh boy that has not changed at all from the titbits they got dropped at PaizoCon. Both the playtest and 2e seem poised to lean even harder into the weird and strange parts of the setting where science fiction and fantasy overlap. I am 100% here for it.
Tumblr media
The point that I am getting to that Paths Beyond wasn't the only project I had sitting on the back burner. There is also Star Beyond, a science fantasy take on the same weird and wonderful genre we know from Planescape. I can never predict which games my brain is going to latch on each week, but I expect I'll be writing Starfinder content for the blog in the very near future. Not just because it's fun and because Starfinder literally calls its player organizations factions, but because I have an ambition. My aim is to have Stars Beyond ready for Starfinder Infinite by the 2e launches. I actually have an outline and I'm aiming for a companion in the 40,000 to 50,000 word range. That's a big project, if I finish it, it will be easily the most words I've written for a single book, but I figure I have time on my side. It may actually be doable, but nonetheless wish me luck.
See you in the stars.
Post-Script: We also got confirmation that while 2e was in the works when OGL-gate hit, there were supposed to be more 1e books: the Faction Guide (which was being written) and the Extraplanar Archive (which was in outlining). It's a bummer we don't have either yet given what I plan to do, but it does make me feel like Stars Beyond is on the right track.
Post-post-script: I also have a place where I reblog inspirational media for this project over at @stars-beyond-sf! Check it out.

We literally have like, a dozen cannon trans characters. They had a trans character be the focal NPC for the convention exclusive Pathfinder society game played at Paizocon when I went in 2017.
People pay to show up for that one event. They literally walked multiple people and DMs out over being dicks about it.
And this was the year they were pushing starfinder as their big new release. Like one of their biggest PR pushes before 2e.
They. Walked. People. Out.
Of a exclusive con only event that you had to register for separately with limited space.
For being dicks about a trans character, who's being trans was incorporated into her character and her culture and her class.
That Paizo? That's the one he's talking about?

I like how during PaizoCon yesterday, one of the Paizo people mentioned they use Tumblr more than Twitter, so Twitch chat asked about an official Paizo Tumblr. Their response was literally just, "Tumblr is a bit too spicy for us."
I thought, "Really? Tumblr is too spicy?" Then I was reminded of the things people post on this demented website and felt like a real smizzo.

I've been playing pf2e since 2019. I'm a Paizo subscriber and I've been to Paizocon several times. I don't interact with the online community often (I don't like interacting with people online much, honestly), but I have made some posts on Paizo's forums and have spent some time on the pf2e Foundry Discord looking for - and receiving - technical support. Based on my experiences, I would not call the community 'rancid'. It's not perfect. We definitely have our share of grognards (tho a lot of them left when pf2e came out), I don't love everything Paizo the company has ever done, and I don't have much patience with the '5e is bad play Pathfinder' crowd myself. I'm sorry you've had to deal with them. But a lot of the pf2e community is just people who like a thing and are freaking out because that thing is under direct attack from its largest competitor (you yourself said Paizo is the main target of the new OGL). Some of my happiest memories are of the stories my friends and I have told together while playing pf2e on Foundry VTT. The idea that I might lose that because some suits decided they weren't making enough money is... upsetting.
Look, I am going to delete further defenses (or to be fair, attacks on, or any editorializing at all) regarding Pathfinder in my inbox going forward but like. This is about my experiences. I'm very glad you've had positive experiences. I believe it's entirely valid for people who play Pathfinder to be worried and upset about the potential implications of the OGL. I'll admit I am not terribly concerned about Pathfinder from a personal standpoint, but I do have an eye on it in terms of legal implications, and I have a number of concerns about the OGL 1.1 which I've outlined elsewhere. They are actually not relevant to this post. I was already pretty put off by Pathfinder well before the OGL 1.1 stuff, and I do very much include pf2e, because every single mention of pf2e I've encountered has been "5e is bad, play Pathfinder 2e". The people saying that specifically in the tags of my OGL post, or worse, spamming the tags of actual play D&D shows, have moved me from "generally irritated" to "I will never play this; I would honestly rather write my own game if nothing else meets my needs," but this is otherwise not connected to the OGL for me.
There is no way to cancel out how I feel by saying that you do not feel that way, because of the fundamentally individual and unique nature of human experiences, and so, on my own blog, in a post and a follow up that still, put together, have under 30 notes, I am going to say whatever the fuck I want about how I feel about the Pathfinder community. The fact that two separate people have looked at it and instead of saying "man, that sucks but it's not about me, so anyway, going to go have a good time playing Pathfinder", have felt the need to come into my inbox and wring their hands about the relatively tame and mild phrase "rancid vibes", is not helping matters.

My six takeaways from the PaizoCon 2022 'Declassifying the Dark Archive' online panel today...
Tumblr media
1) That's not an owl bear! That's Old Man Jenkins! And now I wanna to play in a Pathfinder 2e Scooby-Doo one shot or campaign.
Tumblr media
2) The teleporting Psychic is gonna have insane mobility.
Tumblr media
3) I love the idea of the Time Mage archetype. You may not be a Time Mage now but you will be in the future and your abilities comes from your future self.
Tumblr media
4) The Chronoskimmer; "I'm not gonna smack you now but I will ten minutes in the future." Ten Minutes Later... *SMACK*
Tumblr media
5) I want that murder goose and I'll name them Fred.
Tumblr media
6) My fulu hopes has been dashed! I guess maybe in another release then!
