Ecthelion x reader

Request: Hey! Can I request a dating fic between reader and Ecthelion? How does he woo/court her? What about their engagement? Wedding plans? Especially if this is set in Valinor after the FoG, and he’s just come back to life, and like, omg, now I have this lady I want to check out when I’m fresh out of soul prison. He probably relies on Glorfindel a little bit because he’s been more established since the late Second Age and comes from a “house of princes.” - Anon

Synopsis: With his return to Valinor and the desperate call to take action, Ecthelion has made it his purpose, day and night, to construct the perfect future for you happily ever after.

“How long has he been like this?”

“Since he returned.”

“…That’s over five months, Laurë!”

A weary side-eye glance at Egalmoth from Glorfindel and the former folded his lip to refocus his attention to their dear friend who was fretting over the right colours to paint the interior of your future house. Ask him if he had plucked the courage to speak to you upon his return and he’d throw swears at his friends. But he was already envisioning his life with you as though the most important action was completed. Dream on.

“Cream, bone white or ivory cream?” Came the steady voice of Ecthelion. In his hands were strips of the colours he suggested and on his face was a panicked expression as though he was running out of time.

Frowning and ready to calm his dear friend, Glorfindel stretched his palms outwards and gently waved them up and down to soothe the madman or rather, elf. “Thel, don’t you think this is all too much? You haven’t even asked—”

“Yes, I just did. What colour should I choose?” Ecthelion enunciated and widened his eyes further to emphasise his point.

At this point, it was Egalmoth to the rescue as he placed the vat of wine down and exhaled, ready to appear as the saviour to most, since all was impossible, of his stress. “What is the purpose of the colours, Thel?”

“Balusters for the balcony,” Ecthelion responded calmly as though you and he were already living together—in his head, you were—and he was tasked with the décor, both interior and exterior.

The room fell into silence as all three Lords were left at one another, or rather both Glorfindel and Ecthelion were left gawking at Ecthelion’s seriousness. Not a stutter or flatter in the batting of his lashes did Ecthelion show any signs of uncertainty when it came to answering their questions. He was indeed picking out the colour of the balusters for the balcony, so when you wished to hang your baskets of flowers or sit in the evening and gaze at the setting sun, whatever you wore would be highlighted by the colour the balusters were.

Tongue in cheek, Glorfindel closed his mouth and flashed an awkward grimace before cutting the silence with an answer. “Bone white, especially if you’re choosing to paint your house in blue, it would mesh well with each other.”

Grateful for the say, Ecthelion wasted no time in returning to his colour scheming and designing of your future home with a small ‘thank you’. However, Egalmoth was beginning to find confusion in this entire dynamic since they were both against feeding into their dear friend’s delusions. The look of disgust plastered across the silver-haired male’s face as he scrutinised Glorfindel grew intensely as the second ticked by.

“Are you serious? No, no, no, don’t cut me off. I’m being serious here,” he protested at Glorfindel’s attempt to sway his mind. Dropping his voice and octave and inching his head closer to bridge the gap between him and the latter, he whisper-yelled, “Are you serious?! We were asked to help him finish his confession letter so he could serenade Y/N, not indulge in his delusionary fantasies that cannot exist until he confesses! Why are you helping him?!”

Amused at the sudden outburst from his comrade, he released small chuckles at his concern for their ‘puppy love’ friend. “But weren’t you—”

“No, no, no, no, no. Do not categorise me as an accomplice when I am not!” Pinching his brow, Egalmoth flung his back against the cushioned chair a little too hard, defeating the cushioning purpose. A quiet yelp slipped out before a series of exasperated sighs followed and a single eye roll. “I’m here to help lover boy get his lover, not keep him looking like a sick puppy.”

Unable to respond, Glorfindel watched with laughter as Egalmoth rose from his seat and trudged over to Ecthelion to pry the sheet of paper out of the ebony-haired elf’s hands which almost sparked an outburst.

“Alright, I’ve had enough. You summoned us to aid you with wooing Y/N and here we are aiding you with picking house colours. Well no more! Get me your best rendition of your confession Laurë helped you write. Get up!” With a wave of his hand, Egalmoth ushered Ecthelion to his feet to recite his poem. Unfortunately, Thel was able to cast a sheepish expression which spoke volumes and made both Lords groan.

Holding his palms upwards to surrender, he defended himself as best as he could. “In my adversity, I was overcome with excitement for our future each time I sat down to finish the poem, so I have an excuse.”

This time, it was Glorfindel who turned on the heat and cast his dear friend a look of disappointment. With his arms and legs crossed, he bore holes in Ecthelion’s head, creating possible solutions to help his helpless friend without launching his harp at his head. Needless to say, Glorfindel sighed heavily with the pressures of another person’s burden on his shoulders. “Where’s the parchment with the poem? Let’s see how well we can impersonate the great Elemmírë and create a masterpiece for you to profess your undying love for Y/N. Only this time you’re alive and not dead.”

Ending his joke with laughter, accompanied by Egalmoth, he rose from his chair to grip the parchment from Ecthelion’s hands as he produced it from inside his robes. With another disappointed shake of his head, he requested a charcoal and soon, all three were—rather two since Ecthelion kept interrupting to discuss your future—slaving away to create a poem worthy of your name. Nonetheless, after the first hour and a half passed, he managed to get into the flow of creating words from his mind and very soon the poem was halfway completed.

“Okay, so we have the first two stanzas down—thankfully!” sassed Egalmoth as he threw an unbiased glare at the ebony hair Lord who did not hesitate to return one with common courtesy. “I think one more stanza could be added; try fitting in a line that confesses his love?”

Sharply reading through what was already written, Ecthelion had found everything to be perfect, yet still missing something. Prying the parchment from Glorfindel’s fingers, Thel paced up and down the drawing room muttering to himself about the things he could include about you.

Your eyes? Your voice? Your beauty—no, that was already included. Perhaps…

And so, he began to recite the poem in hopes of conjuring the rest.

“In gardens fair, where roses bloom,

A beauty found, defying gloom.

Like you, fair one, a bloom so rare,

With an elegance that fills the air.

“Yet in this garden, one may find,

A soul as lovely, gentle, and kind.

Each delicate curve, each gentle hue,

Reflects the sweetness found in you.

“Oh, delicate rose of whispered sighs,

In your presence, the world complies,

For your grace outshines the floral art,

A masterpiece of tender heart.

“So let me liken you, my dear,

To roses blooming, ever near.

For in your grace, in every part,

You hold the essence of my heart.

“I lo—”

He froze as though the words were stuck in his throat. At the tip of his very tongue, he knew the next syllable to whisper to you whenever he got the chance. Yet, it refused to fall off his tongue as though something held it back. The trembling of his hands gave it away, though his slight stubbornness pushed his fear away and replaced it with confidence.

False confidence. He scoffed and stared at the ivory cream carpet.

What was he to be afraid of? He was the Great lord Ecthelion of the Fountain who slayed four Balrogs and great tales were sung of him. He stared death in its eye, confessing to you would be as easy as walking through the silvery streets of Gondolin once again. Yet something held him back.

The day he left you in the city of Tirion that day he departed, gnawed at his memory. It was easier to picture being with you than working up the courage to share his heart knowing that you might reject him. You had every right to since he floundered the opportunity ages ago. It didn’t matter how many forms of encouragement came his way; anxiety lurked overheard. His only wish was that he had confessed to you before departing to reduce this turmoil.

“Thel?” The soft whisper of Glorfindel’s voice woke him up and returned him to reality. “Is everything alright?”

There was a deafening silence before the crumpling of paper followed by a sigh. “Who am I fooling? I can’t bring myself to do this anymore.”

“Oi, mate! What are—What are you doing? We’ve come so far,” Egalmoth reasoned as he shot from his seat with his hands outwards. “You can’t back out now!”

“Well, I am!” Ecthelion responded curtly, whipping his head around to shoot a tired look at his friends. “All this…All of this I’m doing, and what if Y/N rejects me? I had the opportunity aeons ago and I didn’t—”

“And yet Y/N stayed without loving someone else. Isn’t that enough to let you know that they’re waiting for you to still try? Imagine if you didn’t have this chance, and they found someone else, you would blame yourself, right? Then don’t! Come on, Thel,” Egalmoth encouraged as he took steps closer to his friend, bending down to retrieve the balled-up parchment off the floor. “Don’t let all those months of designing your future home be for nothing! Picture me as Y/N; what would you say if you had the chance?”

The glare he threw at Egalmoth was enough to make anyone else scurry away. The temper and fury behind his eyes; water brimmed his lower lashes as a barbed wire found its way around his neck. The first inhale he took burned his lungs. It was better to be left in the fantasy world.

Parting his lips, his silver-grey eyes burnt with passion as his heart cried a symphony of love. “I would say that I’m sorry, and I love you.” he began with a feathered whisper, “I have loved you morning, noon and night, even in death. My soul yearns for the very essence of yours for I cannot exist without you; I do not think that I can. I wish to be at your side in this life, hereafter and the next; I never wish to be parted from you from this moment onwards. I only wish to cherish you…if you would forgive me and accept me as I am.”

The silence in the air was thick. A pin could fall to the carpet and a sound would ricochet. Both Lords were caught by the throat from the rawness of the confession, a stark contrast to what was originally discussed. Flowery words.

Heaving as though a burden was lifted from his chest, Ecthelion felt tears pooling his low lashes from the anxiety he suffered from his mistakes. He just wanted to be with you. Not go through this turmoil of overcoming his f—

Clap! Clap! Clap! “Oh, that was beautiful!”

The sound of three necks snapping simultaneously reverberated clearly in your eardrums as your sudden voice and clapping startled all three Lords. However, once all three pairs of eyes were locked on your figure standing gracefully as ever in the doorway, you froze mid-clapping and stood at attention, eye darting from left to right. You felt like you were unintentionally being scolded by your old buddies.

Shuffling on your feet, you offered a wolfy grin with an awkward chuckle. “Sorry, the worker informed me that Lord Ecthelion was in the drawing room relaxing with familiar company and I was permitted to enter. If I’m obstructing, I’ll come back another time.”

“Oh no, no, no, no!” exclaimed Glorfindel with a beam brighter than the sun as the opportunity of a lifetime presented itself on a diamond platter. He wasted no time in flying out of his chair and grabbing Egalmoth by his scruff to head towards the exit, leaving Ecthelion standing confused in the centre of the room. “You can stay and chat with Ecthelion, we were just heading to the kitchen for condiments since he enjoys starving us. Farewell Y/N, we’ll catch up another time!”

You stood aside as both Lords brushed past your figure to rush down the hallway in the opposite direction of the kitchen as far as you could remember from your childhood. Pinching your brows with a whimsical expression, you remained standing in the doorway, not wanting to appear any more intruding than you had already proven to be. There was a curt nod from you in the ebony-haired elf’s direction, an awkward action which made no sense, yet proved to ease your nerves.

Tongue in cheek, you eyed the interior of the room before returning your focus to the statue of an elf at the centre. “I liked your words, the declaration of love, I meant. Is it for a play, not that I knew you to be the type of person to engage in those activities, or a song or poem?”

“Yes,” he curtly responded. The most unmanageable response to escape his silvery tongue slipped out. In Ecthelion’s head, he was screaming and attempting to drown himself for his foolish display. In his mind, his day was going from great to good to terrible to I-don’t-know-if-this-should-be-counted. Where and when did you spawn from?

Awkwardly nodding your head at his reply, you raised your brow. “Nice, um, I wanted to personally come here to give this to you,” you murmured and crossed the floor to stand a foot from the centre to hand him an envelope with his name written. “It’s a banquet and my family told me to invite a plus one, so—”

“You thought of me?”

“Yes!”

“Why?”

Your face fell at the suddenness of his low confidence. The Ecthelion you knew from yesteryears would not have doubted anyone’s decision to have him as a first choice; this was not your Thel.

“You don’t wish to attend? My apologies, I’ll just take back the invite then.” Your hands made a grab to pry the envelope from his fingers, but he was quicker to move it out of your grasp. Deflating at his actions, you huffed. “Do you want to attend the banquet or not?”

“Yes! But why?”

“W-…Why?! Thel, I haven’t seen you in ages,” you angrily laughed and felt a wave of emotion welling in your throat making it difficult to meet his eyes. “I missed you and I did miss your return because I was busy preparing for the banquet hoping that I could spend the night with you. Chatting, drinking, dancing, or finding a secluded spot away from everyone. I miss you, and I know you miss me too. So come, please.”

You missed him. You missed him. You wanted to spend time with him alone. No better words were spoken from your lips to convince him to stay away. A moment the doors of opportunity opened; this time he was not ignoring it.

Clutching the envelope firmly between his fingers, he smiled. Gingerly nodding his head before breaking into it vigorously, he gave you a look of affection he could not resist. “I’ll be there in my finest wear.”

“Lovely!” you beamed and stared into his eyes. The tears were still brimming your lashes, only in smaller quantities which was less of an issue now that the problem was resolved. “And perhaps you can recite the confession you gave to Egalmoth earlier at the banquet, I’d love to hear it once more, in private.”

Understanding the meaning behind your words, he gave a gentle, yet stiff nod. “Of course,” he breathed with a look of anxiety. “Of course, a confession for you.”

Created by Mercedes‑Benz most specialised customization and craftmanship team in the manufaktur in Sindelfingen, the vehicle exterior features the unique two-tone colour combination created for Project MAYBACH. While the upper part of the vehicle is lacquered in a glossy obsidian black, the lower part, side flanks and special forged rims are painted in a sand hue.

The highest levels of craftsmanship continue into the vehicle's interior with an identical two-tone colour scheme. The four-seat configuration, steering wheel, doors, lower dashboard and ceiling are lined in black and sand coloured nappa leather, complete with sand coloured décor trims and strips. The highpile floormats are black with a sand coloured leather border and embroidered Mercedes‑Maybach logo. One-off Lambo alert!

Huracan Sterrato ‘Opera Unica'

Lamborghini has created a one-off version of the Huracan Sterrato, dubbed the Opera Unica in line with the supercar maker’s 60 the anniversary this year, wearing a special paint scheme “inspired by the vibrant blues of Sardinia’s seas and skies.”

The Opera Unica interpretation of the Huracán Sterrato boasts of a hand-painted exterior that employs three colours – Blu Amnis as the first solid colour, which is etched into by hand with Blu Grifo paint as the second colour, finished by a third, Blue Fedra, in a paint process that takes 370 hours in total.

The one-off car’s exterior gets matte black paint for its roof, sills, front lamp casings, front and rear splitters as well as fenders. the wheel arch protection shrouds are also painted matte black, and house a set of matte black ‘Morus’ 19-inch alloy wheels.

This blue theme is carried into the car’s interior with exposed carbon-fibre, where the seats, door panels and console are upholstered in Blu Delphinus leather. Its dashboard is trimmed in Alcantara of the same colour, while the steering wheel gets a combination of the two materials.

A lighter shade, Celeste Pheobe is used in complementary panels, trim piping and embroidery including the Lamobrghini logo. A seat panel graphic is applied in silver by laser, while the starter button cover on the centre console is finished in the exterior’s crystal effect paint.

Project: Movement. Week 4. Thursday, 1/02/24.

Painting: Studio Time.

I did a bit of thumbnailing for what I had in mind and even shot some reference pics in my bathrooms doing different actions/ different positions to help decided with what direction I wanted to take this painting. My initial idea was to create a portrait of my past self looking into the mirror at my current self, reflecting my theme of the movement of time and how much I've changed since cutting my hair for the first time.

I decided to further emphasise the change between my past and future self with colours, duller colours for the past and highly saturated eye catching colours for the future. I had to do some thumbnails for how to balance out the colours, and look at some older works of mine to see how I did it in the past. I settled on using primarily red, yellow, blue, green, and orange as my colour pallet. However, I've never used them in the way I intended to here, so it was certainly a new experience.

I started off by choosing a reference picture and doing a rough under drawing to figure out proportions. When doing my rough sketch I actually taped my phone to the wall and tried to draw from a distance so I could calculate the shapes and proportions as accurately as possible.

I decided that since the interior and exterior of the mirror are very different in colour schemes, I would work on one at a time, I chose to focus on inside the mirror to start off with. Once that was done I began blocking out my main base colours and went about adding shadows. the light shadows helped start the process of shaping the face. It was a very "trust the process" sort of situation.

I knew with the approach I took I wouldn't be able to get away with solid blocks of colour for the hair and shirt, so I experimented with layering different colours to gain different textures. For the hair I tried building shapes with different layers of blues and greens before going in with a dark blue for the darker areas and shadows, I then went in with some red and light green highlights. It was certainly an improvement.

As for the shirt, It was very trial and error, I actually had to repaint over certain areas. I settled with using my light blue for the main shadows on the shirt to add a sense of dept, the translucence of the blue paint on top of the orange worked in my favour. Since blue and orange are on opposite ends of the colour wheel they tend to cancel each other out a bit, resulting in a duller hue of blue which was perfect for the shadows. I went in with greens to blend out the blue at the edges and yellow for highlights, I used bits of red and dark green for creases and wrinkles in the shirt. When I was doing the blue areas, I actually covered large areas at a time and then would drag the back of my hand through it removing a lot of the paint and leaving an interesting texture, similar to a wedge tool shown to us during the tool workshop.

Film #911: 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', dir. Wes Anderson, 2014.

Wes Anderson is a director that, if you listen to the general tone of pop culture criticism, has rapidly descended into a parody of his own style. The hallmarks are instantly recognisable: symmetrical shot compositions; pastel colours; Bill Murray; endless lists of items; unusual heroes; Owen Wilson. It's even reached the point that a travel site, Accidentally Wes Anderson, collates lists of locations by colour, retroactively applying the director's name to them as though this idiosyncratic style somehow predates the architecture itself. His is a style that is easily parroted and frequently sneered at as being too artificial. How do you make a film that speaks to real life, if reality isn't allowed anywhere near your films?

Until I really paid attention to The Grand Budapest Hotel, I felt similarly. This film has a seventeen-person ensemble cast, with characters completely disappearing from the narrative after a few scenes, and this approach always runs the risk of feeling gimmicky. Wes Anderson's works are often reduced to silliness, and can feel like they have replaced narrative purpose with zany setpieces that don't contribute to anything. And then something caught my eye: 'Inspired by the works of Stefan Zweig'.

The Grand Budapest Hotel starts with a framing device inside a framing device: a girl goes to a cemetery (labelled in block letters on the exterior wall - a motif that will get used a lot in this film) to pay her respects to a writer. The writer (Tom Wilkinson and Jude Law) has written a book called 'The Grand Budapest Hotel', in which he recounts going to the hotel of the same name and having dinner with the hotel's owner, now faded into obscurity. The owner, Zero (F. Murray Abraham and Tony Revolori) started work as a bellhop, and he tells the author of the hotel's former concierge and their escapades together in the time immediately before a 1930s fascist regime took hold. The concierge, Gustave (Ralph Fiennes), is notorious for starting affairs with rich dowagers, including the secret owner of the hotel. When the dowager dies abruptly, Gutave and Zero, his new hire, go to pay their respects and are quickly embroiled in the arguments surrounding the deceased's estate. Gustave is surprised to learn that he has been bequeathed a famous Renaissance painting, 'Boy with Apple', but the dowager's heir, Dmitri (Adrien Brody), refuses to let this happen. Undeterred, Gustave and Zero steal the painting. Shortly afterward, Gustave is arrested on suspicion of murdering his benefactor, following the testimony of the woman's butler.

Zero takes over many of Gustave's duties, while scheming with his girlfriend Agatha (Saoirse Ronan) to break the concierge out of prison. They do this by hiding tools in the pastries that Agatha makes during her work at a bakery. Despite the pastries being suspiciously tool-shaped, their decoration makes them too valuable to inspect for contraband. The scheme works and Zero and Gustave are reunited. Gustave calls upon the assistance of a secret society of hotel concierges to facilitate a meeting with Serge, the dowager's butler and the person whose testimony was responsible for Gustave's arrest. Serge confesses that he was pressured to implicate Gustave by Dmitri, the real killer, and that the dowager has a second will which is to come into effect if she happened to be murdered. Serge is killed by Dmitri's hitman, Jopling (Willem Dafoe). Zero and Gustave flee back to the hotel, only to find it converted into a headquarters for the fascist regime. Nonetheless, they are able to retrieve the painting, which has the second will hidden behind the canvas where Serge placed it for safe keeping. The second will grants the hotel to Gustave, and Dmitri flees the country.

Overall, the story is quite complex and swift-moving, and some of the connections between events seem arbitrary. For instance, the audience is shown that the will is concealed in the painting right after the painting is introduced, when Serge packages it for Gustave and Zero to take. However, neither Zero nor Gustave know this, and it is Agatha who discovers the will. This means that Zero and Gustave take several actions which directly lead to the discovery of the will without having that as their specific intention. After the murder of Serge, the protagonists pursue Jopling on a sled, resulting in a surreal chase scene - mostly conducted through stop-motion - at the end of which the characters launch from a ski jump. Throughout this film, it often feels like the characters are just doing things that just happen to be the things required to move the plot forward. This tendency is what makes Anderson's films feel artificial and immature: they're not closely-knitted narrative structures but rather the net results of a random assemblage of characters and events. And yet, this film was purportedly inspired by one of Austria's most famous novelists, famed for his simple storytelling. What gives?

Stefan Zweig's novels - especially Beware of Pity (1939) and The Post Office Girl (1982), which Anderson has explicitly said he borrowed from for this film - are deeply fatalistic, which does seem to mirror Anderson's perspective on the setting of The Grand Budapest Hotel. Zweig was writing during the advent of the Second World War, a period mimicked by the film's establishment of an unnamed fascist regime. In The Post Office Girl, his protagonist feels an intense nostalgia for her stay at a hotel, and the theme of nostalgia is common to many of Zwieg's novels, and Anderson's films as well (Moonrise Kingdom (2102) is perhaps the most evocative of his musings on nostalgia). Perhaps the most relevant stylistic similarity between the two is their fixation on surface details, and how these act as indicators of character. Writing in the Paris Review, for example, Kevin Nguyen observes that we understand Anderson's characters through the details of their appearance and locations. He cites a passage from one of Zweig's novellas that similarly catalogues every item of clothing a character is wearing, and points out that each of these descriptions is "larded with an assessment of his character." The description of the hotel in The Post Office Girl is similarly detailed, and we learn most of what we do about the title character from how she thinks about these items.

The nostalgia, too, is the sort of thing that Anderson could have borrowed directly from Zweig's novels if he had discovered the author earlier in his career - again, it's a situation where we have to be careful about implying a direct inspiration, as the nostalgia in Anderson's works definitely predates his stated interest in Zweig's work. In this film, Anderson refers explicitly to the idea that the nostalgia that Gustave felt for the hotel, and that Zero has felt ever since, might have been a longing for a time that neither of them actually experienced - that the idyllic past never existed, and the hotel itself is an attempt to artificially invent such a time. Zweig felt this dislocation sharply: Richard Brody in The New Yorker discusses a passage from Zweig's memoir where Zweig is confronted with the differences in mood between the front lines of the Second World War and the civilian life of, coincidentally, Budapest. Perhaps, Zweig considers, the happy life of Budapest is not the way things usually are, with the war being an aberration in the normal state of affairs. Perhaps the keen edge of the happiness was a result of the war, a last grab at pleasure. This resonates with the Hotel Budapest: while the memories of the place are perfectly coloured, by the 1970s the decor has been replaced with drab orange walls and mildewy grout. Was it ever really this way?

Zweig also used framing narratives, and this structure is what helped me meet Wes Anderson's films on their own terms. The story-within-a-story structure has clearly helped Anderson make sense of his own films - after this, he used it again in his two most recent films, The French Dispatch (2021) and Asteroid City (2023). I think this might be the film in which he first fully embraced it. The artificiality of his earlier films is easier to comprehend and to stomach when we think of it as a representation of something in a book, rather than a depiction of real lived experience. In The Grand Budapest Hotel, the characters are unusual in the sense that they are fully-known by the audience. With a story as complicated and disparate as this one, the only way in which we can follow what's going on is by the characters repeatedly directly expressing how they feel and what they think. This is internal monologue, made external through lists of objects and through weirdly open dialogue. And if artificiality is required to make this world comprehensible, why not lean into it? Thus, the characters don't speak the way normal human beings do; they speak in a sort of polished third draft of human speech. They constantly sound as though they're quoting from another work. Likewise, why not reduce the sets and cinematography only to those details that help us understand the world - only just obtrusive enough for us to register that this is not meant to be a depiction of the real world?

I keep thinking of the chase scene on the sled, and thinking of how Anderson does something even more bewildering with a similar chase scene in The French Dispatch. The scenes are heightened and artificial; they beggar belief at the types of chaos that unfolds. But then I wonder what is happening in the 'book' that we are reading. Early on in the film, the camera movement and acting feels directed by a narration that, for once, we're not explicitly hearing - something like 'Gustave heard a knock at the door, and moved smartly towards it'. But what would this chase scene be written as, in the retelling of it by Zero, in the novel by the Author? Probably something as simple as 'A chase happens'. So why not have fun with it?
