The Soloist: A Harmonious Encounter with Mental Health and OT
Tumblr media
Introduction:
Hello, dear readers! Today, I have a unique movie experience to share—one that left me profoundly touched and enlightened. As an Occupational Therapy (OT) student, I've embarked on a cinematic journey with "The Soloist" (2009), a film that beautifully intertwines the themes of mental health, music, and the profound impact of occupational therapy. Join me as we delve into this powerful cinematic narrative while maintaining utmost respect for originality.
The Symphony of "The Soloist"
The Soloist" is based on the true story of Nathaniel Ayers, a homeless musician living with schizophrenia, and his chance encounter with Steve Lopez, a Los Angeles Times journalist. This remarkable film not only explores the complex world of mental health but also celebrates the transformative role that occupational therapy can play in an individual's life.
Nathaniel's Struggle with Schizophrenia:
Nathaniel, portrayed brilliantly by Jamie Foxx, grapples with the daily challenges of schizophrenia, a condition that affects his perception of reality. His life unfolds on the streets of Los Angeles, where he's surrounded by the constant noise of the city and the cacophony of his own mind.
Tumblr media
The Healing Power of Music:
Enter Steve Lopez, played by Robert Downey Jr., who stumbles upon Nathaniel playing a two-stringed violin on the streets. What begins as a journalistic pursuit soon transforms into a deep friendship. Through the power of music, Nathaniel finds solace, and Steve finds a story that transcends headlines
OT's Role in Nathaniel's Journey:
Here's where occupational therapy makes its resonant entry. Elizabeth, an occupational therapist portrayed by Catherine Keener, recognizes Nathaniel's potential and offers him a chance to reconnect with his love for music. Through therapeutic engagement and meaningful occupation, Nathaniel begins his journey of healing and self-discovery.
Lessons Learned:As an OT student,
"The Soloist" has taught me invaluable lessons:The importance of holistic care: Nathaniel's journey reminds us that therapy goes beyond symptom management; it encompasses the restoration of dignity, identity, and purpose.
Tumblr media
The power of meaningful occupation:
Music becomes Nathaniel's anchor, highlighting how engaging in activities that hold personal significance can be therapeutic. The role of advocacy: Steve Lopez's relentless support for Nathaniel mirrors the advocacy we, as future OTs, must provide to empower our clients
Tumblr media
This movie has left a profound impact on my journey as an OT student. Witnessing Nathaniel's transformation from a man lost in the labyrinth of his mind to a musician finding his voice through occupational therapy has deepened my understanding of the significance of our profession. It's a reminder that we have the privilege of being part of our clients' journeys to recovery, guiding them toward the rediscovery of their own beautiful melodies.
Conclusion: A Resonant Ode to OT
"The Soloist" is more than just a movie; it's a symphony of hope, resilience, and the transformative potential of occupational therapy. It reminds us that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, has a unique song to share with the world.

Original Guido Crepax art. A pagefor "Hello, Anita!", published by the Edizioni l'Isola Found in 1980.
I'm very conscious of how much reading Crepax has influenced me. I LOVE doing those little "stolen" moments panels of his, like here in panels 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7. They work everywhere, changing even superhero fight scenes into intimate moments.

CV Page
For my CV page, I just put the information directly in the page without adding any unnecessary decoration.
For the typeface, I chose the typeface from the awareness campaign, which makes the whole portfolio more consistent.
I added a small decoration on the right side of each page to link the whole system.

Landing Page Of A Google Adwords Ad
A fundamental point when we are going to create Google Adwords ads is to have an optimal landing page for the visits that we are going to send from the PPC ads. Many advertisers start creating ads by sending users to pages that are not relevant to what they want to sell or directly to the home page. I am going to indicate some of the characteristics that the landing pages of Adwords ads must have.
 Relevant and original content
The landing page must show the characteristics of the product or service offered and we must try to make it relevant and original, this item can also be applied to SEO. This Adwords landing page must include the keywords that we are using in our ads (and vice versa) to provide a solution to the search that the user is considering. A few days ago I read a study of ecommerces in Spain and more than half of them sent users of Adwords ads to landing pages that were not correct, for example, to the home page.
Transparency
This landing page should be as transparent to the user as possible, including some of these features:
You must highlight objective information about the product.
Reflect how that product can be paid if it is an ecommerce, include clear and valid payment methods in that country.
Information about the cookies collected on that page, whether for advertising, site navigation, etc.
Highlight contact information of the company, telephone, email, address and any contact information that is relevant to the user.
If you are in an online store, you must accurately include the shipping methods and the return policy, all this information must be very accessible to the person who is browsing your website.
Easy navigability
The Adwords landing page must be easy to navigate for the user, remember that for Google usability is essential. To do this, you must have your landing page with the following characteristics:
Easy access to all links.
Access to products and services quickly and easily, either through menus, search engine, etc.
The website must be optimized for mobile devices.
Objective of the page clear and direct.
Visible call to action without having to scroll. This is very important and not all advertisers have the “landing call to action” visible to the user as soon as they enter the web.
Loading time of the page
For Google, one of the most important points in practically all of its products, especially in its search engine, is the user experience . For this, having a landing page that loads quickly is essential so that the user does not get tired of waiting and closes the browser. If you advertise in Adwords, make sure that your page loads in 2-3 seconds maximum, otherwise, Google will consider it as a waiting time that is not optimal for the user and you will be penalized in the quality level, so you will have to pay more for your ads, as I have commented in other articles, the ad ranking depends on the CPC * Quality level * Expected impact, so if you invest a considerable amount of money per month in Adwords, you should allocate part of it to optimizing the speed of your website, mainly the landings that collect visits from Adwords ads.
