What about minimalism in graphic design? What characteristics or elements does a minimalist graphic design approach have?

Here we have set out just a few of the things you can expect from minimalist graphic design.

Purposeful

A lot of people presume that a minimalist aesthetic – whether in graphic design or elsewhere – is a simple one. And it certainly can be simple… however, it is also not an ethos that aims for simplicity for simplicity’s sake.

Instead, it is a highly utilitarian approach that is about intent. Each of the various elements of minimalist graphic design – whether used across a brand’s website, social media pages, or even printed materials such as posters and flyers – has a purpose in its appeal to the viewer.

If a graphic designer is aiming at a minimalist design and there are certain elements of the design that are not strictly necessary, those elements may be removed.

Emphasis on space and balance

The extensive use of open white space is one of the things that many of us most associate with minimalist design.

Going back to our earlier point about purpose, such white space isn’t left in the design for its own sake. Instead, the emphasis is on minimising the ‘noise’ that might otherwise distract the viewer in more crowded designs, and on achieving balance and harmony in the overall design.

The general rule is that for every ‘heavy’ element in a given piece of minimalist design, there should be something to balance it out to ensure the viewer is not left overwhelmed or disorientated.

A banner image on a website, for instance, might use bold text or striking photography, but then balance this out with plentiful white space around the borders of the image, or between lines of text.

Limited colour palette

There is a bit of a stereotypical perception of minimalism as being about muted or even monochromatic designs – think just black and white, or even shades of grey and beige.

But that’s not quite true, as minimalist graphic design can definitely embrace bright and bold colours. Again, though, it’s all about purpose. A minimalist design will use such colours in a limited way to serve the broader design, rather than for their own sake.

The most capable minimalist graphic designers will therefore be knowledgeable about colour psychology – in other words, the associations that certain colours have with certain emotions. Of course, if you are working with such a graphic designer to help achieve the right look for your brand, you should probably also swot up a little on colour psychology.

Hopefully the above will have given you a sense of what minimalism involves in graphic design, which should leave you feeling better informed in your work with a graphic designer for your business. Don’t forget, too, that a single design doesn’t necessarily have to be solely minimalist, as a decision might be made to include maximal elements, such as busier colour and photography.

Since we were already there, I thought we should check out the food at Coconut House as I knew they've had a meal deal for sometime. I'm usually quite wary of eating at Italian places as there's always so much cream, eggs, milk and cheese. But I figured we could ask them if they could veganise any of their dishes. The vegetarian dishes are all clearly marked on their menu so it's a matter of checking if they can omit the non-vegan ingredients. It took us a bit of effort as the lady serving us didn't even know about the KindMeal coupon until I opened up the app on my phone to show it to her. And she couldn't tell us whether they can omit the eggs, dairy, etc so we spoke to the cook directly instead. He very quickly told us what we could have so that was great. We tried the 2 pizzas: 1. Medicine Man - RM19.90 Thyme, Rosemary, Sage, Olive - requested to omit Mozzarella 2. Finding The Right Asphalt Mixes For Your Project

While we offer many custom blends with different thicknesses, granularity, and stress tolerances, the big choice in asphalt mixing comes down to how hot it is when it's laid down.

Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA): This is the “standard” type of asphalt. The binding material and aggregate materials are heated to between 280-325 degrees Fahrenheit and laid down while still extremely hot. HMA can generally only be laid in warmer months, as cold winter temperatures can cause the base to cool too quickly.

Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA): Warm asphalt mixes are a newer form, and a compromise between hot and cold.  They can be laid in cooler temperatures, hauled farther, and still set correctly, while still using less petroleum products than hot mix. WMA is currently used in about 30 percent of all paving projects, and is actually better for the environment and worker health because there is less dust, smoke, and fumes when this asphalt is poured. WMA is manufactured at temperatures between 200 and 250 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA): The asphalt is a blend of oils and additives that makes it possible for the asphalt mix to be stored and laid down cold. Potholes in Asphalt: What Causes Them and How are They Fixed?

The damage of Wisconsin winter is starting to show – especially on the roads. As the weather warms up, road construction starts up again in the Madison and Milwaukee areas. With road construction, comes pothole repair.

Potholes form as a result of expansion and contraction during freeze-thaw water cycles, combined with the amount of traffic on the pavement. Potholes often appear in late winter and early Spring because of changing temperatures. The constant freezing and thawing of melting snow, combined with Spring rain, weakens the pavement and leads to cracks and potholes.

Wisconsin Winters Bring Potholes

Winter is prime time for asphalt damage, especially in cases of repeated melting and freezing. These can quickly cause eggshell cracks or potholes to occur. While asphalt repair is difficult in winter, it can be done. If your driveway or roadway is presenting a public safety hazard, you may have no other choice. If pothole repair cannot wait until spring, cold mix asphalt can be used to patch potholes.

Patching Potholes With Cold Mix Asphalt

Cold mix asphalt is more workable in colder weather than hot or warm mix asphalt. Cold mix is produced by mixing bitumen emulsion or cutback with cold aggregates, sometimes also with the addition of anti-stripping agents. Cold mix asphalt has been used in the past as temporary patching material, or if hot mix asphalt is not available.

The benefits of cold mix asphalt over hot mix are:

That it can be used at low temperatures.

That it can also be put in stockpiles for six months or so after production.

That it remains more flexible than hot mix because of the extended cure time.

At Wolf Paving, we produce and stockpile this mix to sell for maintaining streets and filling potholes in the winter months when the hot mix is not available. The mix of aggregates is very similar to that of hot mix, it just has additives that keep it workable in cold conditions.

1. How do potholes form? Understand the process.

Potholes are caused by the expansion and contraction of water after it has entered into the ground under the pavement. As the weight of cars and trucks pass over the weak spot in the road, pieces of the pavement weaken, which causes the material to break down from the weight, creating the pothole.

2. What do you use to patch potholes? Understand the mix.

Potholes come in all shapes and sizes and your pothole repair mix should, too. In fact, the quality of the asphalt mix used to repair your pothole makes a big difference in the aesthetics and durability of your pothole repair. 3. How to fix potholes in roads? Understand the basic process.

Clean the pothole. Dirt and debris that can get in and under the pavement needs to be removed. Having pieces of broken pavement mixed in with the new pavement can weaken the repair.

Heat the pothole. Heating the hole removes any extra moisture that may be in the existing pavement and also softens the area so the new asphalt can be applied. The pothole hole can also be reshaped once it is softened and old asphalt can be removed or rejuvenated.

Add the new asphalt. Typically, hot mix asphalt is used for this repair. The asphalt needs to be compacted after applied to ensure the reduction of water penetration and increases its resistance. The compaction creates a bond between the old and new asphalt pavement.

Allow the new asphalt to cool. Any debris left around the repair is removed. Most pothole repairs can be driven on immediately.

4. Who fixes potholes?? Finding a pothole repair company or asphalt contractor.

Believe it or not, there are specific qualities to look for in an asphalt paving contractor. The first step is to do your research. Ask a lot of questions and understand the contractor’s level of experience, their customer satisfaction rate and the process they use to repair asphalt pavement and potholes. It is important to get multiple quotes and always ask a contractor for references and referrals from the past 12 months. The quality of your pothole repair and the length of time your repair will last depend a great deal on the experience of your contractor and how they complete the repair process.

In the Meantime, Tips to Avoid Hitting Potholes

It's possible that collision coverage on your insurance policy will cover sudden damage done to your vehicle caused by a pothole. Insurance will not, however, cover everyday wear and tear caused by driving over pothole-covered roads over a longer period of time.

What damage can potholes do to your car? Keep an eye out for the following things:

Tire puncture

Bent rims

Suspension damage

Steering knocked out of alignment

Exhaust system damage

Engine damage

Follow these five tips to avoid potholes and prevent damage to your vehicle:

1. Keep your eyes peeled. Constantly scan the road and be aware of what’s in front of you; put the phone down.

2. Keep a safe following distance. You don’t know how the driver in front of you will react if he/she sees a pothole. If you keep a safe following distance, you’ll be able to brake safely and have a better view of what lies ahead.

3. Don’t swerve. While swerving may feel like the right thing to do, it could put you in more danger. You could veer into the oncoming lane of traffic or cause your tire(s) to hit the pothole at an angle that could result in more damage. If you can’t safely avoid it, gently brake before the pothole, release the brake at the pothole and take it head-on.

4. Watch your speed. If you’re driving on a road that looks like it’s been in a war (and you know what I mean!), slow down. If the road is bad, consider finding an alternate route. Pull over and check the map on your smartphone or the good old paper map in your glove compartment.

5. Watch out for water. Large potholes can collect water from a nearby snowbank and rain, making it hard to know how deep the pothole really is.

Concrete Installation: The Complete 8 Step Process

Concrete installation looks easy enough, but when it comes to your investment, trust an experienced concrete contractor to do the job right.

Did you know there are eight critical steps your contractor should follow? Follow along as we review the complete eight step process for concrete installation.

One important thing to remember: before your concrete gets poured, be sure you’re familiar with the six steps your concrete contractor should be doing prior to paving. Once those steps are completed, it’s time to start laying your concrete! Typically, once the paving work is scheduled, you will be notified with an estimated start date then called a day before the work begins.

Every paving project is different, but typically every project will follow these eight basic steps:

An estimator will visit your property to ensure the conditions are ideal for paving and give you a detailed quote. Concrete will last longer if it’s built on solid, level, and well-drained soil. If extra work is needed to prepare your property the sub-base, your contractor will let you know at this time.

When the paving crew arrives, it takes some time to prepare the machinery for paving. During this period, the crew will go over the gravel base to double check that it’s ready for paving.

The team will then build up forms in the shape the concrete will take, now the concrete can be poured.

The paving crew will then level the concrete in a process called “screeding.” Screeding is when a flat board and other screeding tools are used to smooth concrete after its been laid to assist with flattening.

Concrete begins to set very quickly and the process of smoothing your pavement is ongoing. Crew members will use power and hand tools to smooth and even the surface.

After the concrete is installed, crew members will apply a cure agent to the surface. This slows the water loss over a 30-day period, leaving you with stronger, nicer-looking concrete.

Your new concrete surface will take 7-10 days to cure before it can be used. While concrete sets fairly quickly, it remains weak until fully cured. As a result, it’s important to keep people, pets and traffic off the surface for several hours. Any premature surface traffic can leave permanent marks.

After the initial set, workers will remove the forms and clean up.
