John Egbert, Jade Harley
Act 6, page 4302-4304
JOHN: wait, what just happened?
JADE: i dont know!
JOHN: it got darker, and greener...
JADE: :?
JOHN: this place is weird. when are we gonna bust through the other window, anyway?
JOHN: i'm kind of antsy to get on with our adventure and meet up with everybody!
JADE: yes me too
JADE: hmmmmmm
JOHN: what is it?
JADE: im just trying to estimate our arrival time
JADE: based on our current velocity, which is about as close to light speed as i can make it go
JOHN: i see.
JOHN: since we are going so fast, it should be pretty soon, right?
JOHN: like a few more minutes?
JADE: hmmmmmmmmmmm...
JADE: no
JADE: itll take quite a bit longer than that
JOHN: ugh.
JOHN: how long?
JADE: i would say
JADE: if i keep our speed constant...
JADE: we should arrive in about three years
JOHN: what!!!
JOHN: that is an absolutely preposterous amount of time.
JADE: i know!
JOHN: are you sure you can't make it go any faster?
JOHN: i mean, not to sound too demanding, but...
JOHN: didn't you say you can teleport stuff?
JOHN: why not teleport us there?
JADE: i cant!
JADE: not here, at least
JOHN: oh. well that sucks.
JOHN: why not?
JADE: the way i understand it is...
JADE: becs powers draw from the green sun
JADE: and the green sun presides over our universe
JADE: many universes actually! and the sessions that created them, as well as the sessions created within them
JADE: including the trolls universe and their session
JADE: think of it like a giant solar system, but instead of planets revolving around the sun, there are many universes
JOHN: uh, ok.
JOHN: that sounds...
JOHN: big.
JADE: it is!
JADE: so, bec was able to teleport anywhere in the universe he wanted in an instant, much faster than light
JADE: jack was able to do this too, within our session, and then when i inherited those powers from jadesprite, so could i
JADE: but we could only teleport locally
JADE: which means, bec could jump to anywhere in our universe, but not to another universe, or into a session
JADE: and jack could jump to anywhere in our session, but not outside it
JADE: we cant even jump to the green sun itself, even though we sort of serve as a gateway to it, and all its energy
JADE: and once we leave the suns domain, our travel is limited by the speed of light, like everyone else!
JADE: for example, the furthest ring is not in the suns domain
JADE: it is more like the suns medium, allowing it to exist
JADE: so if i wanted to fly out of our session and travel to the green sun, i would have to make my way there through the furthest ring at the speed of light or less
JADE: and wherever we are now is not in the suns domain either
JADE: so the same rules apply
JOHN: i see.
JOHN: it didn't really occur to me this was all so elaborate.
JOHN: like, if the green sun is at the center of a bunch of universes, like a huge solar system...
JOHN: doesn't that mean it was sort of important?
JOHN: maybe trying to blow it up wasn't such a great idea.
JADE: yes i think youre right
JADE: but to be fair, we were all the victims of a big prank!
JOHN: oh man, a prank??
JOHN: who pranked us?
JADE: some really creepy omniscient guy
JADE: it doesnt matter much, hes supposedly dead now
JOHN: oh. well that was quite a ruse then. that son of a bitch!
JADE: yes, but its not all as bad as it seems
JADE: theres a silver lining in all of this
JADE: like you said, a sun presiding over many universes has to be pretty cosmically important
JADE: who knows what terrible consequences there would be if it was destroyed
JADE: or maybe worse, if it never existed at all
JADE: which is what made rose and daves true mission an unintended success!
JOHN: their true mission?
JOHN: what was that?
JADE: to deliver the bomb to the empty location the green sun was meant to exist for most of eternity
JADE: and then create the sun in the first place
JADE: that is what the tumor was for all along
JOHN: ...
JADE: like i said
JADE: we got played like a bunch of suckers!!!

across the great divide (there is a glorious sunrise)
chapter one: autumn leaves falling down
or: i had an idea for an au and just. ran with it. yeah um this is based on another piece of media, a book series i really enjoyed that is very popular. perhaps you can guess? anyway. things will be revealed soon enough. hope you enjoy!! (also: it's about time i write an owen-centric fic, huh)
(4304 words)
Ever since Owen Giutivi was very young (two years, three months, and five days old, to be specific), he’s always known almost instinctively that there was something different about him, something a little weird, a little off. Maybe it’s something in the way he tends to always be mentally leagues ahead of the rest of his class, maybe it’s something in the way he’s always been able to understand subjects most adults would have no idea how to begin to go about comprehending. Throughout his formative years, Owen was always pushed to go further, work his incredible mind as hard as he could, whether by his well-meaning but demanding parents, or the teachers and child specialists who were there to witness it when he was reading 500-page novels in first grade.
Yeah, there’s really no doubt about it: Owen has always been extremely, if not astoundingly or even scarily smart- he’s been labeled a genius, a prodigy, a million words that honestly couldn’t mean less to him. The most important part, the only part that really matters, is that he almost never meets someone who gets it, who doesn’t act as if he’s some freak because of his intelligence. And he supposes that’s why he gravitated towards Charlie: a part of him can tell, even from a first glance, that there is something strange, something more unusual than what you see in a typical middle-schooler, about Charlie too.
Owen first met Charlie Sickle when they were both twelve, almost thirteen, at the start of Seventh Grade. Charlie was the new kid in school, and Owen sat next to him in Social Studies (the best class, no one could ever convince him otherwise). Obviously, they hit it off right away- he was a refreshing blast of fresh air in the face for Owen, with his strange habits, ridiculous energy, and always over-excessive swearing. Charlie is, hands-down, the funniest guy he’s ever met. Within minutes, he’ll have Owen laughing so hard he feels like his stomach is going to split in two, aching with howling snickers that carry over the whole room when they’re supposed to be reading quietly, earning glaring looks from other students and loud shushes from their teacher.
But Owen doesn’t care, because he’s around Charlie. And Charlie never cares about anything anyway.
And it’s incredible, because for the first time, Owen has someone who understands him, who’s willing to be his unwavering partner in crime, through thick and thin. Charlie brings out a part of him Owen thought he had lost, he lets Owen be a normal kid again- when he’s with Charlie, he isn’t the genius, the freak, the quiet kid who all the teachers adore, when he’s with Charlie, his intelligence isn’t his defining trait, his only trait.
When he’s with Charlie, he’s just Owen- and he’s happy. Charlie and Owen, Owen and Charlie- they became a conglomeration, never one referenced, by children and adults alike, without mentioning the other. Within a month of meeting each other, they became inseparable. Owen’s parents don’t approve of their friendship- of course they don’t. Charlie is extroverted, and an undeniable loudmouth; basically, everything Owen isn’t. Charlie breaks him more out of his shell every day, he lets Owen be something more than the perfect prodigy everyone adores.
Owen supposes the old saying, opposites attract, really is true- because where Charlie’s outgoing and boisterous, Owen is studious and quiet. Where Charlie has no qualms going up and asking whichever person he currently has a crush on out on a date, Owen can never even bring himself to say more than two words to the people he’s attracted to. Charlie skips classes and blows off quizzes and has the worst grades in the class, if not the entire school- and yet, Owen never gets anything less than perfect marks and straight As in all his subjects.
But somehow, through all this, Owen’s grades have never slipped, and Charlie has learnt when it’s best to be loud and when to hold in his jokes- because the thing about Owen and Charlie is that they only ever rub off on each other in the best ways possible. Owen means it when he says that, quite literally, there are almost no downsides in their friendship. They’re thick as thieves (and twice as crafty), and though they are shunned and generally unpopular, it doesn’t even matter.
Neither of them really have any other friends, but they don’t care because it’s enough to just have the two of them, brothers in all but name, a bond between them that no one could break. Charlie is quite literally the only reason Owen managed to get through middle school without completely pulling into himself, and for that, he is forever thankful.
It is because of Charlie, of course, that Owen regards Seventh Grade as the best year of his life.
Then, Eighth Grade came.
——
It’s the first day of Eighth Grade, and Owen is a jumbling ball of nerves. His worries mostly stem from a wondering if things will be the same between him and his best friend, who he hasn’t seen all summer- Charlie was at an all-summer camp that he’s always spoken of vaguely throughout their friendship, and hasn’t been able to properly contact Owen the whole summer. They had sent a few half-hearted letters, but they both felt it wasn’t the same, and broke off correspondence.
Luckily, Charlie was back in town in time to receive his schedule, and through texts he and Owen have managed to figure out that they share most, if not all, of their classes. Owen is elated, of course- and from what he can tell, Charlie is too (Charlie always gets so excited at the stupidest things, Owen loves him for it). But that doesn’t change the underlying anxiety that bubbles under the surface as he gets ready to see his best friend for the first time in nearly four months.
(Honestly, Owen doesn’t know why summer breaks have to be so long. All that one can do during that time is have way too much time to think- and Owen wishes vehemently he had less time to do so. He would rather be in school, reviewing stupid math equations he learnt years ago.)
Stepping out to the bus stop, backpack weighing him down anew, binder slung over his shoulder by its strap, Owen notices a chill in the air uncharacteristic for early September in Philadelphia. The sky is overcast, the color of the clouds similar in hue to Owen’s favorite blue-gray sweater, of which he has donned at the moment.
The other kids at his bus stop consist of some eighth graders like him, some seventh, and a couple giddy sixth graders excited beyond belief for their first day of middle school, and Owen takes stock of them all, plastering his face with a familiar dulled-out expression. He doesn’t have the heart to tell the sixth graders that there really isn’t anything super exciting about this, doesn’t have the heart to tell them they’ll be burnt out by the time the month is even up. He stands lazily by the bus stop sign, leaning against the familiar metal pole as he has so many times before, eyes grazing across the scenery, a stagnant scene he knows like the back of my hand- a street corner washed in swathes of gray, the only color the specks of green and yellow drifting across the tops of trees.
A wind gusts past, and Owen shivers. If the bus doesn’t come soon, by god, he’s gonna- like- swear, or something. He stifles a snicker at his imagination, currently painting a picture of Charlie, shaking a fist down the empty street, cursing at the sky and blowing puffs of condensation out of his pouting mouth with every breath.
(The fact that no one speaks to him at the bus stop is so stupid. He genuinely does not need more time to think about anything, especially how lonely- how lonely he isn’t. He’s fine. Owen’s fine. Why would anyone ever think anything else?)
The bus does come eventually, ten long minutes, punctuated only by the music blaring through Owen’s headphones, later. He huffs out a sigh and yawns, stretching up to the clouds, before resigning himself to his fate and clambering up the steps onto the already-crowded bus.
Immediately, a familiar face pops up from behind a seat in the back, his green eyes bright and smile contagious. Owen feels a similar expression begin to worm its way across his face at the sight of his best friend, and he quickens his pace, sliding into the schoolbus seat beside Charlie as if no time has passed.
“Owen! Owen fuckin’ Giutivi! It’s been a while, hasn’t it!” Charlie ruffles Owen’s hair, giving him a quick hug, and Owen sticks his tongue out at him, relief washing over his body like a summer rainstorm.
“Hey, Charlie,” Owen grins back, affection blooming within him as he flicks his best friend across the forehead. “Hope your summer was well good, mate!”
“Oh my god, I forgot you were so… British,” Charlie mutters lightheartedly to himself upon hearing Owen’s accent, slamming his head back into the fake leather of the seat with a half-laugh. “My summer was great, you?”
“Meh,” Owen answers truthfully, shoulders still permanently slumped as he leans back to join Charlie. “I stayed at home a lot, there wasn’t much to do. Maybe someday I can come to that fancy camp of yours.”
It was just an offhand comment, but Charlie’s face brightens immediately, his smile somehow growing even more. “Holy shit, dude, that would actually be amazing. Hopefully you fit the camp requirements, I think you’d really fit in there.”
Owen stares at him incredulously, the corner of his mouth turned up in a half-smirk. “Charlie Sickle. In all the long long months you’ve known me, have I ever been the type to fit in anywhere?” When he doesn’t respond, Owen sighs and speaks again. “The answer to that, by the way, is no.”
“No, but I’m serious! I actually think you would love it there.”
(Owen mentally recoils at this, unconsciously folding into himself. He’s not- he’s not that kind of person, he’s not like Charlie- he can’t just make friends wherever and whenever he feels like it. Owen is so drawn into himself, it’s honestly a miracle he hasn’t disappeared entirely at this point. Doesn’t Charlie understand he’s his only tether to the rest of the world? Doesn’t he realize that without him, Owen might as well be a robot for the amount of living he’s actually doing? Can’t he see that the majority of Owen’s summer has been spent staring at the same spot on his bedroom wall in silence?
And the fact that Charlie seems so sincere only serves to make his statements even more ridiculous. Honestly, he should know by now that Owen is about the most antisocial guy out there. It’s one of the constants of his life that he doesn’t fit in anywhere.)
Owen hums noncommittally, pulling out his earbuds and sticking one into Charlie’s ear as well as his own, as is their tradition. “You choose first?” he asks, deftly changing the subject, and Charlie nods vigorously (completely oblivious to Owen’s discomfort, but that’s fine, he’s fine), grabbing Owen’s phone and opening Spotify. Within seconds, a song is screaming through Owen’s headphones, and he reaches for his phone to turn down the volume, cringing as the noise only increases. Of course he had pressed the wrong button. Charlie rolls his eyes and helps Owen out, lowering the volume significantly until he can relax again.
“What’s the song?” Owen asks. Charlie is bobbing his head to a ridiculous degree, exclaiming loudly whenever the beat drops.
“Sex Sells by Lovejoy,” he answers, stretching. “Fucking banger, right? It’s by my friend Wil’s band- he also goes to my summer camp. I think you’d like him.”
(Maybe Owen would like him, but no one ever likes Owen. Except Charlie. There’s a reason why Owen has never made any friends in his life other than the boy sitting obliviously next to him right now, humming along to a tune only the two of them can hear. Charlie is his fucking lifeline.)
“His music is good, anyway,” Owen half-agrees, trying to mask his surprise at the rememberance that he is not, in fact, Charlie’s only friend in the world.
“Yeah, he’s usually the main leader of this, like, campfire singalong shit we do nightly, along with the other members of his cabin, cuz they’re all kind of music dudes. They like to flaunt it too. Fuckers,” he mutters, clear-cut affection in his voice that causes Owen to squirm with a kind of unprompted jealousy. Charlie clears his throat, continuing quickly. “Anyway- yeah, Wil has a really nice guitar- it was his dad’s and its sound is, like, really fucking good. Feels like it carries for miles, and that’s even without a mic.” Charlie’s head is still bopping to the music, and Owen belatedly realizes that he’s doing the same, albeit less ferociously.
“I’ll give you an eight out of ten for that,” he admits, and Charlie’s eyebrows shoot up in satisfied surprise.
“You hear that, boys?!” he yells, those in the general vicinity shooting annoyed glances his direction, and Owen snickers under his breath at his friend’s ridiculousness. “Charlie Sickle wins again!”
Their conversation continues lazily on the way to school, taking turns choosing new songs to play for the other.
(The rules of their game, one Charlie invented some time in the first few months of their friendship, are as follows: the two of them take turns choosing a song- it has to be a new song they haven’t ever played for the other yet, as well as one the other has never heard. Then, the person who isn’t choosing takes a listen and rates the song on a scale of one to ten, which corresponds to the number of points the chooser gets. At the end of the bus ride, the person with the most points wins for the day and gets the other’s cookie at lunch.)
Unsurprisingly given his strong start, Charlie’s won for this day- as he and Owen step off the bus, the wind carrying on it the scent of something foreboding, Owen tacks up their final scores at thirty one for Charlie versus twenty three for Owen, and he resigns himself to a cookie-less lunch.
“Hey, Owen, do you remember who our homeroom is?”
Owen sighs, exasperated, and rolls his eyes- because honestly, it is just like Charlie to not know. “Did you, like, leave our schedule at home or something?”
“Pff- fuck, are you, like, accusing me? You think I could do something like that? Jeez, dude, I’m hurt- gonna have to find a new best friend, I guess…” Charlie trails off, and though there is no fire behind his words, Owen can’t help it as his heart picks up speed at the thought of having to do all this alone, he knows Charlie’s making a joke, but Owen doesn’t want to be alone-
“We have a Mrs Pemberton,” Owen notes for Charlie, trying to get himself under control, and the shorter of the two nods before the two boys lapse into comfortable silence, just two best friends against the world. Or at least, Owen hopes that’s what they are, hopes that’s what Charlie sees him as. He doesn’t know what he’d do if it’s not.
(Later, Owen will look back and berate himself, because he should have noticed the way Charlie stood shakily, the way his eyes darted back and forth, as if on the lookout for something. He should have noticed the way Charlie’s jokes weren’t as well-thought-out as usual, the way his usual ridiculousness felt forced and fake.
Owen should have noticed that, as they made their way to Mrs Pemberton’s room, Charlie just got worse, sniffing the air and hovering protectively over Owen’s shoulder. But hindsight’s twenty out of twenty, Owen supposes, because in that moment, nothing had seemed amiss to him.)
They step into their classroom and, almost immediately, Charlie freezes in place, his limbs becoming rigid and an expression of barely masked horror spilling across his face, the change as drastic as if someone had poured paint over his head. It’s only then that Owen glances back, concern etched across his features. Charlie’s always been shorter than Owen, but at that moment, he looks like he wants nothing more than to grow to a humongous size and swallow something whole (Charlie doesn’t seem angry, though. He just seems scared). Honestly, Owen is quite put off.
“…Mate, you good?” He asks, brow furrowed in a mix of confusion and worry. Charlie nods a little too quickly, Adam’s apple bobbing in his throat as he swallows, his complexion having turned pale and sickly-looking. Owen follows the gaze of his eyes as they trace across the room, to a big bulldog that, for whatever odd reason, is sitting underneath the teacher’s desk.
It has jowls that rival Winston Churchill, and a glare to match. Its ears stick straight up from its head, triangle-shaped and alert, teeth sticking up from its underbite onto its upper lip. Its fur is matted, a dusty brown color, and Owen can’t help but wonder if it’s well cared for, whoever it belongs to. Also, last he checked, it’s a rule that dogs of any kind are strictly not allowed on school property, so he’s slightly apprehensive as to what one is doing here right now.
If he didn’t know better, Owen would swear it’s staring straight at him.
“Are you sure you’re alright?”
“Oh, uh, shit- I’m fine, just- just a little scared of dogs,” Charlie mutters, the obvious lie grating and rough in Owen’s mind, flurries of worry and possibilities floating across Owen’s mind in a familiar and foggy blizzard. He’s brought back to himself by Charlie gesturing towards the animal under the desk with a jut of his chin. “Let’s just find our seats and stay far, far away from it.”
Owen nods, though to be honest, he doesn’t really understand what the big deal was. As far as he can tell, it is just a neglected, grumpy-looking bulldog that has no reason to be there- and sad and unsettling as that is, he honestly doesn’t understand why Charlie is acting so skittish. That is Owen’s first mistake.
Three minutes later, after he and Charlie have found their seats (right next to each other, by some stroke of luck, and Owen is immediately so relieved that he feels like he could cry) the bell rings and their teacher still hasn’t arrived. The bulldog is still sitting menacingly under the desk, and Owen’s starting to get a little unnerved, as the beast is definitely staring at him- its gaze hasn’t slid from his face the entire time he’s been in the room. Charlie is still acting really jumpy, like, oddly so, and the rest of the class are impatiently waiting, annoyed whispers passing between friends and desk neighbors.
Finally, after several minutes have passed, the door swings open, and a young woman walks in. Her woven and plaited hair is the color of spun silk, a blonde so yellow Owen thinks there’s no way it can be her natural hair color, with skin as pale and freckled as a smoothed river stone. Her lips are warm and pink-tinged, curled up in a seductive smile, with piercing blue-gray eyes that seem to hold secrets deep within. She wears a bright pink dress that looks almost like a ballroom gown, with white and lighter pink accents at the waist, neck, and cuffs, and she seems to slither as she walks.
The teacher has arrived, but she is like no teacher Owen had ever seen. Not in a good way, either- just looking at her causes the skin on the back of his neck to prick up and crawl uncomfortably, and with a glance over at Charlie, Owen can tell he feels the same.
“Greetings, class!” She spreads her arms around her, motioning like she’s hugging all the class, voice like frozen honey against a backdrop of fluorescent lights.
(Owen notices with a slight spike of apprehension the way her smile seems to be just a bit too wide, her eyes are far too blank, staring ahead with a kind of manufactured happiness that Owen sees far too often on his own face. The difference is, however, that on her face, it looks almost sinister.)
“My name is Miss Pemberton,” the woman continues, either oblivious to or ignoring Owen and Charlie’s discomfort, “but you all can call me Madeleine. I’m so excited to get to know every single one of you this year!” She goes off on the classic teacher spiel, the one that never gets more true regardless of how many years it’s repeated, and Owen and Charlie exchange a knowing glance and a snicker- at least this part of the strange woman’s appearance is something they can both agree is somewhat normal.
The rest of the day passes in a dull, stretching swathe of rules and policies, how to read schedules, et cetera, et cetera, as first days back at school often do. When the bell rings for recess, it’s a welcome sound, and Owen can’t wait to get out onto the field, to lay in the grass and banter back and forth with Charlie.
But just as he’s pulling back on his sweater, the sharp and honeyed voice sounds from across the room. “Owen, dear?”
(Her voice sounds wrong when she says his name, there’s something underlying it- a quiet, almost imperceptible sound of static, and Owen can feel his arms erupt in bumping bouts of gooseflesh.)
“Yeah?” He answers, turning back to face Miss Pemberton.
“Why don’t you stay in for a little bit, honey.” It’s not a question, and again, there’s something off about her voice, it’s too flat and lilting- it sounds like a snake’s approximation of what a human sounds like, a good attempt tainted by venom and fangs. Owen begins to feel uneasy, the feeling catching up with him even more than before. The bulldog is still staring at him, beady and unblinking eyes trained on his own.
Charlie speaks before he can respond, his eyes wide and a glaring clarity that Owen doesn’t understand spreading across his face. “Um, no, actually, I don’t think he will be staying in- come on, dude, let’s go-”
Charlie’s hand tightens around Owen’s wrist, and he begins to pull him out of the room. Owen goes willingly, his heart rabbiting illogically, and oh god, he is scared and he doesn’t know why-
“Oh… but I insist,” Madeleine says, her teeth too white, eyes too blank, pupils so small all Owen can see are her blue-gray irises, pulling him in, closer, closer-
Until Charlie’s grip on his wrist jolts him back to reality.
“Uh, just give us a second- I’ll be right with you.” Owen shoots her his best ‘I’m a star student, how could I lie to you’ smile and lets Charlie pull him out into the hallway, where the shorter boy grabs his shoulders and looks him dead in the eyes, more serious than Owen’s ever seen him.
“Owen, listen to me. I am going to give you something, and you are going to go back into that room and deal with… that. I will be right here. I promise.”
“Char- why-” Owen is so confused, he has no clue what’s going on.
“I can’t help you with this,” Charlie mutters, face downcast. “I literally can’t fucking help you with this- shit, Owen, I’m so sorry. But this was going to happen at some point or another- your scent is just getting too strong, there was nothing I could do anymore-”
“My scent? Charlie, what the heck are you talking about?” It has to be another one of Charlie’s jokes, a bit that’ll have them both in tears with laughter when it reaches its end. But for once, Owen can’t see a trace of mirth in Charlie’s eyes; as he searches desperately, he cannot find a single hint that he is joking. Charlie doesn’t say anything, only stares at him with a kind of deeply sincere anger- it’s not directed at him, though, that much he can tell.
And so Owen takes a deep, shaky breath, and nods. He doesn’t know what he’s agreeing to, has no idea what Charlie’s asking him to do. All he knows is that, standing right in front of him, is the only person in the world who he trusts, he would do anything for him.
“Okay. Take this.” Charlie reaches into his backpack and pulls out a moldy, bruised orange, and before Owen can protest, he presses it into the other’s palm.
“Charlie, what the heck?” Owen’s laughing now, the utter ridiculousness of this situation crashing down on him. He assumes that he was wrong, that it is a bit, but when he looks down, Charlie’s eyes are still devoid of any silliness.
“Look, I know it’s really fucking weird,” Charlie mutters. “Definitely wouldn’t be my choice, but that’s what X said to give you, and even if it’s a shitty orange, who the fuck am I to argue…”
Owen blinks, completely lost.
“Right, fuck, sorry. Just… take the orange. You’re a fucking smart kid, dude. You’ll know what to do.” Charlie states the words with a fabricated confidence, and Owen can’t help but think it feels like he’s trying to convince himself as well as Owen.
And then, with a salute, Owen’s best friend pushes him forward, back into the room, with nothing but a moldy orange clutched in his sweating hands.

matt murdock x original female character
chapter four
Summary: Fleeing from an abusive relationship, Grace St. James goes to the only place she still has a friend: Hell’s Kitchen. She’s forced to live in her car and beg for a job from the law firm Nelson, Murdock, and Page all the while making sure her past doesn’t catch up to her. Enter Matt Murdock: cocky, handsome, and willing to let her live with him for free until she can afford to get a place of her own. Grace is drawn to Matt in a way she’s never been drawn to anyone, causing sparks to fly as they inevitably grow closer and closer.
a/n: God, I love this fic. I’ve already written almost 60k words for it. The bad news is that those words are all in the middle, and technically there’s a huge gap between this chapter and most of what I’ve written...oops? But don’t worry, the hyperfixation is still going strong!

But Matt had no idea that, a handful of hours later, Grace would come face to face with Daredevil.
Grace was having a good day despite the phone call with her mother, so of course it was only a matter of time before things came crashing down.
It was her fault, she supposed in a brief moment of clarity, for not taking the taxi all the way back to Ryan and Jess’s. She hadn’t wanted anything to lead back to Hell’s Kitchen. She knew that Dean’s influence reached far, and she wouldn’t put it past him to have someone monitoring taxi companies. So even though she had paid in cash, she’d had the cab driver stop just outside of the neighborhood so she could walk the rest of the way.
But she’d also stayed too late in the bookstore, her bag now weighed down with five battered paperbacks, and night had thoroughly fallen in the city by the time she had decided to head back.
That was her fault too–she already was trying to spend as little bit of time as possible in her car at night. So she’d stayed out later than she should have and, well…
Well, now she was being cornered by three men.
The first man had catcalled her from the stoop of a building. She’d casually crossed to the other side of the street, just in case. Then the second man appeared from the shadows. One followed her on each side of the road, hemming her in, cutting off escape.
She cursed quietly to herself and took the next turn. She’d go around if she had to, take the long way home.
That was when the third man had stepped out, right in front of her, pretending to bump into her while the other two caught up.
As soon as she realized what was happening, she darted into an alley. And of course her luck had continued to worsen–it was a dead end. Her heart kicked into high gear as she realized she was thoroughly trapped. She still had the knife, but it was buried at the bottom of her bag along with her keys and anything else that could be used as a weapon. She didn’t have time to dig it out, though she shoved her hand inside her bag anyways and started to feel around.
Grace was accustomed to fear, but only when it came to Dean. She’d never known when the violence was coming with him. It had always come unexpectedly.
Knowing it was coming was so much worse, she decided.
Especially because she had a feeling that they weren’t just going to hit her.
“Think you can just ignore me?” the first man, the one who had catcalled her, said as he prowled closer. He was shorter than the others but much more muscular. She saw a thick scar on one side of his neck.
“I don’t have any cash,” she said softly, proud of how steady her voice was.
“She thinks we want her money,” the man said over his shoulder to the two others. They all laughed.
Grace thought she was about to be sick. Maybe that’d be a good distraction, she thought distantly. Throwing up on their feet. Maybe it’d even put them off enough to stop them from getting what they wanted.
She refused to think the word.
She gripped her bag more tightly and watched as they slowly got closer and closer. Her heart was in her throat.
“Come on, baby, let’s have a little fun,” said a second man, taller and thinner than the one closest to her. His eyes were half-closed. He licked his lips. Grace shuddered at the sight.
“I don’t really feel like having fun,” she said but the words came out strangled.
The first man lunged. Her head cracked back against the bricks. Pain exploded behind her eyes.
Fight, she told herself, making herself remember all of the classes she’d taken for a situation like this. Fight back!
Because she was used to pain. Used to maneuvering with fuzzy vision. Used to working around what hurt.
The man popped a couple of buttons on her work shirt. Finally, her mind caught up and she swung her fist. It connected with the man’s jaw with a sharp, satisfying crack. She hit him again before he could recover. Her knuckles split and pain lanced up her arm, but it was worth it.
It felt good to be the one throwing punches for once. It felt good to fight back.
The man cursed and swung clumsily. Grace ducked under his arm and tried to run, but the other two men grabbed her and hauled her back.
She screamed, long and loud. It tore out of her throat and burned on the way out but there was no way anyone passing by couldn’t have heard it.
“Shut up,” one of the men snapped. He slapped her across the face so hard she tasted blood. Two of them held her by her upper arms. She struggled with all of her might, vision darkening at the edges, her feet lifting off the ground as she fought against them.
There was a muffled thump, so quiet she barely heard it, but it was enough to change the entire atmosphere in the alley. Everything went still and quiet.
“Oh fuck,” one of the men breathed. They released her so suddenly that she fell right on her ass on the concrete.
Grace scrambled to her feet.
There, at the end of the alley and wreathed in yellow light from the streetlights beyond, was a man.
Not a man.
A devil.
The three men who had seconds before been trying to hurt her were now backing away. All three of them had their hands raised as if in surrender.
They were scared shitless of whoever or whatever was at the end of the alley.
He was dressed in dark red. As he tilted his head, Grace saw the two small horns adoring the mask that covered most of his face.
“We don’t want any trouble,” one of the men said. They were still backing up, putting Grace between them and the devil. But there was no way out–not for them, and not for her, either.
“That’s not what it sounded like to me,” the devil said. His voice was a low growl, all gravel and smoke and rough edges that screamed danger. Grace shuffled back a step, twice as afraid as she had been minutes before. At least she had known what to expect with the three men. They had wanted violence and she had understood that perfectly. This man or creature or whatever he was was utterly unknown, foreign and all the more fearsome because of it.
“We’re just–having some fun,” said another of her attackers. His voice was pitched high with pure fear.
The devil started stalking slowly towards them, a predator toying with its prey.
Run! Grace’s instincts screamed. But there was nowhere to run. The alley was a dead end. The only way out was past this dangerous man with the devil’s countenance. Every line of him was dangerous.
They were all trapped.
The devil struck.
Grace couldn’t help the scream of terror that erupted. She threw herself down, arms over her head, cowering away from this man who looked like he could and would kill her.
But the blow never came. Instead she heard muffled grunts, cracks of bone, the sounds of a fight happening right behind her.
Grace used the distraction to make a run for it. One of her attackers went sailing past her. He thumped against the side of a dumpster and slid down, unconscious, maybe even dead. She couldn’t tell the difference.
Another of the men–the short, muscular one who’d ripped her shirt–went running past. He shoved her out of the way as he went, knocking her to her knees. They barked with pain as she scraped them on the asphalt.
There was a blur of red, Grace rolling out of the way at the last second, and then the devil was hauling the man backwards by his collar.
Grace heaved herself up from the ground. She darted back the other way but tripped over something on the ground. She managed to catch herself in time before she went sprawling to the ground again. It was the tall, skinny one who had licked his lips. He was unconscious, splayed out on the ground, a trail of blood trickling across his face.
Was he dead, too?
The devil was holding the first man by the scruff of his neck when Grace turned around.
“Did they hurt you?” he said in that low, rough voice. The sound of it was like sandpaper on her skin. She shivered at the sensation. Her breaths came in short, panicked gasps.
Her attacker was shaking his head but the devil’s grip was unrelenting.
“Please don’t hurt me,” Grace whispered. Her whole body trembled with fear. She was starting to think that maybe she shouldn’t have ever come to Hell’s Kitchen. It seemed like there were much, much worse things on the streets than Dean Bennett.
“I only hurt bad people,” the devil said. He sounded almost…offended. “Did these men hurt you?”
Grace took a breath to steady herself but didn’t answer. She couldn’t.
The devil tilted his head down to the man he was holding. “Did you hurt her?” He shook the man roughly.
The man’s hands scrabbled for purchase, legs scratching against the asphalt as he tried to get free. “No, no I swear, we were just having some fun! That’s all!”
“Lie,” the devil growled. “Try again and tell me the truth this time. Trust that I’ll know if you lie. Did you hurt her?”
The man choked on a sob. Even from several feet away, Grace could see the devil’s gloved hand tighten on the back of the man’s neck. The man cried out, then relented. “Yes! Alright, yes, we were going to hurt her! She hit her head and Joel slapped her around but that’s it, I swear!”
“What were you going to do to her?” the devil asked. That low growl sent another shiver down her spine.
“We were just going to rob her, that’s all!”
“Stop lying.” The devil’s free hand struck the man’s head.
He cried out. “We were gonna share her!”
Another animalistic growl from the devil that had Grace’s heart hitching. She couldn’t look away, couldn’t move, could barely breathe.
“You were going to rape her,” the devil said. He spat out the words like a curse.
The man’s next words were choked off as the devil wrapped his other hand around his throat, hauled him up, and smashed him against the bricks. The man’s feet barely touched the ground as the devil snarled something into the man’s face, too low for Grace to hear. He was holding the man up with one hand fisted in his shirt and his other forearm braced against the man’s neck. Grace could see, even with the suit, that the devil was all powerful muscle. A predator, through and through.
The man whimpered and then the devil was hitting him, over and over and over, even after the man’s body went limp.
Finally, the devil let the man drop to the ground. He was breathing heavily, his shoulders shaking. He turned his head to look over his shoulder at her.
“You’re safe now,” he said, the rough edges of his voice a little softer now. “It’s alright. I won’t hurt you.”
Grace was still trembling. “Who–who the fuck are you?” she finally managed to choke out.
She thought maybe he frowned. He turned more fully towards her. “You don’t know who I am?”
She couldn’t help her snort, though it was edged in hysteria. “Obviously not. I’m not–I’m not from Hell’s Kitchen. I just moved here.”
The devil made a thoughtful noise in his throat. The sound humanized him, made her realize he was a guy in a suit, not an actual devil. “They call me Daredevil. I look out for people around here.”
The name rang distant bells in her head. But the impact against the bricks, or maybe the adrenaline in her system, made it hard to pin down exactly why the name rang those bells, why it seemed familiar.
“I–” She wasn’t yet convinced that he wasn’t going to hurt her. But he stayed still, several feet away from her. He’d taken out three grown men with ease. Men who’d been scared shitless of him. The men who had almost–she still didn’t think the word–they had known who this devil was, had been scared of him. He could have hurt her several times over already, but he hadn’t. “Thank you,” she said after a moment’s hesitation. The words were stilted on her tongue from her unease.
Daredevil tilted his head to the side. “You’re bleeding,” he said softly. He stepped forward. It was pure instinct for her to stumble back a step in answer. “I won’t hurt you,” he said. “I swear.” The sound of ripping velcro. He slid one of his gloves off. “I’m just a guy,” he said as he stepped closer. Grace held herself utterly still even as her heart thrummed with fear and something else she couldn’t name. “Let me check. Please.”
Slowly, so slowly she could have run if she’d wanted to, Daredevil eased forward until his bare fingers gently took her chin. He inspected her head, lightly probing where it had hit the wall and where her split lip was bleeding. Grace barely breathed.
Up close, she could see the deep maroon color of the armor he was wearing. It looked almost like kevlar or leather or some combination of the two. His mask was, indeed, devilish, the eyes made of glinting red glass that seemed familiar, somehow.
“How hard did you hit your head?” he murmured. Grace shivered again and was finally able to name that other emotion, tangled up tightly within the fear.
Fascination.
“I didn’t black out, if that’s what you’re asking,” she said. His bare hand was gentle if a bit calloused. The longer he stood there, quietly inspecting her injuries, the more convinced her body became that he wasn’t actually going to hurt her. She could see, too, that he was holding himself very carefully away from her. Even though he was close, he had made sure to put space between their bodies, made sure not to crowd her.
“Good,” he said. “You should probably ice it, to be sure. If you feel any nausea or–”
Grace interrupted with a small smile. “I’ve been concussed before, don’t worry. And I have–have roommates.” It was a half-truth. She didn’t live with Ryan and Jess and Max, but they were close enough that it counted. “They can check on me.”
“You should get home,” Daredevil said with a dip of his chin. “I’ll make sure no one bothers you.”
A spike of fear at the words. “You’re–you’re going to follow me home?” She wasn’t sure if she was more nervous that a man dressed as the devil would know where she lived or that he would see that she lived in a car.
This seemed to take him aback. “I…realize how that sounds now.” A soft laugh escaped him that eased her nerves even further. “No, I won’t follow you home. I promise. I’ll just…keep an ear out.”
“I’m not sure I can trust you,” she said but her tone was light. The more the fear drained away, the stronger her fascination grew. Was that normal, she wondered, to immediately trust someone dressed as he was? Or was it some sort of trauma response, something broken within her brain? “How do I know you won’t follow me?”
“You don’t,” he said. “But I swear I won’t.” He moved back a step and tugged his glove back on. “Ice that,” he said.
“I will.” Grace stared at him a minute longer, then started down the alley. She paused just before she stepped out into the light of the street. “Thank you,” she said and turned to face the devil once more.
But he was gone.
–
The next morning Grace woke with a splitting headache. The lack of decent sleep had only made it worse, she was sure. She’d first had to explain her injuries to a very concerned Jess, then had taken a long shower, then spent three hours laying in her car searching for everything there was to be found about the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen.
All of that, her late night on top of the lingering imprint of the bricks in that alleyway, made her feel like she was having the worst hangover in existence.
Somehow, she made it to work. She was slightly early again, mostly because her headache had woken her up before her alarm.
Matt Murdock had beat her there again.
“I thought I might see you in here early again,” he said after she announced herself. He held out the same black mug she’d used the day before, his own chipped mug in his other hand. He was already out of his suit jacket, tie already loosened. She tiredly thought that she liked when Matt Murrdock was a little rumpled.
“You’re my favorite,” she said with a sigh as she took the warm mug between her hands.
“Me or the coffee?” Matt said, eyebrows raising above his red-tinted glasses.
“Oh, the coffee, definitely,” she said with a laugh. “Thanks, by the way.” She quickly fixed it with cream and sugar and took a sip.
“Long night?” Matt said as he took a sip of his own coffee. He seemed content to lean against the wall while she unpacked her bag for the day.
“Yeah. When were you guys going to tell me about Hell’s Kitchen’s vigilante?” she said. Did she imagine it, or did Matt choke a little? He went almost unnaturally still.
The door to the office burst open and Foggy came striding in. “Good morning, Grace St. James!” he said cheerfully. “Oh, and Matt.”
Grace laughed even as she winced at how loud his voice was. “Am I in trouble?” she asked.
Foggy was rooting around in the cabinets in the kitchenette. “Huh? Trouble?”
“You said my full name. Made me think I was in trouble or something.” She shrugged and sipped more of her coffee.
“Oh!” Foggy laughed. “No, I just like how it sounds, I guess.”
Matt was shaking his head and smiling into his mug.
“So, what’d I miss?” Foggy asked as he dumped coffee grounds into the coffee maker. “Why is everyone showing up early all of a sudden? What is this, a professional workplace?”
“I was just asking Matt when you all were going to warn me about the vigilante running around,” Grace said as she set her laptop on her desk. She pressed the power button. The display was still dim from her late night searches. She turned the brightness back up to daytime levels.
There was no mistaking it–Foggy did choke. He coughed to try and cover up the sound.
“Uh–Well, I honestly thought you knew,” he finally said as the coffee maker started percolating.
“I didn’t have any idea,” Grace said. She raised an eyebrow. “I’m not from Hell’s Kitchen, remember? The vigilante definitely wasn’t in the welcome packet.”
“Yeah, but–He’s kind of famous. Helped take down Fisk and all that. Twice. Saves people, helps the little guys, etcetera.” Foggy shrugged. He shot a look towards Matt, who still hadn’t moved from his position leaning against the wall.
“Wasn’t that you guys? Fisk?” Grace had searched the law firm before applying and that was their most famous case–putting Fisk behind bars. His second arrest, the FBI had been involved, but they’d still helped from what the internet said.
“Well,” Foggy said, his cheeks reddening. “The first time for sure. But Daredevil, you know, he helped us figure some stuff out and helped catch Fisk when he escaped…all that stuff.” He looked distinctly uncomfortable.
“Foggy hates to brag,” Matt said. “He doesn’t like showing off all the hard work he did with all of that.” Foggy shot Matt a grateful look.
Grace studied the two of them. Foggy poured a cup of coffee before the machine finished then chugged it like his life depended on it.
They were interrupted by Karen’s arrival. She seemed relatively cheerful, too, though much less loud than Foggy.
“What’s going on?” Karen asked as she hung her jacket and purse up. She swept her tousled blonde hair over one shoulder. “Looks like I’m missing a meeting or something.” She smiled. It was so full of warmth that Grace returned it unconsciously.
“Grace was asking us about Daredevil,” Matt said. His eyebrows went up, peeking over the lenses of his tinted glasses.
Karen paused. “Daredevil? What about him?”
Grace felt herself flush. The attention of all three of them was focused on her. “I didn’t know about him,” she said again. “Figured someone maybe could have warned me there was a vigilante running around.”
“Why?” Karen said as her attention sharpened. “Did you…see him?” She and Foggy shared a glance. She wondered if they were all friends with the vigilante or something, since he’d apparently helped them get rid of Fisk. They seemed…protective, almost.
“Yeah. I was…almost mugged last night. He saved me.” Grace chewed the inside corner of her lip. She didn’t want to say what had actually almost happened. She was still pushing that down and away to be examined at another time.
“He saved my life, too,” Karen said. “Years ago. More than once.”
“Really?” Grace perked up. She hadn’t encountered any of that in her digging the night before. There was a ton of information about him out there, though. Think pieces, police reports, headlines of lots of newspapers, some written by Karen. But none of them had mentioned him saving Karen. There had been a whole section on a fake Daredevil, a man named Ben Poindexter who had apparently dressed like him and killed a bunch of people. There was even a forum for people to report sightings of him where they also posted stories of being saved.
“Yeah, he’s alright.” Karen lifted one shoulder in a shrug. But she was smiling. “We’re fans, to say the least. Are you okay, by the way?”
“Did you get a good look at who attacked you?” Foggy added. Matt remained silent.
“I’m fine, really. Like I said, Daredevil saved me. Got there just in time.” Grace snorted as she remembered her scream as the vigilante had charged. “He scared the shit out of me, though. Like I said–I had no idea someone like that was running around. Some guy dressed in red leather with devil horns showed up out of nowhere then ran at me. I thought I was going to die for a second.”
Karen smothered a small laugh into her hands while Foggy sighed.
“Yeah, he has that effect,” Foggy said. “I think the horns are meant to intimidate, or something.”
“He was nice though,” Grace said. She thought of his gentle touch on her face. How he’d reassured her over and over, talked carefully to her so she wouldn’t be afraid. “Once I realized he wasn’t, you know, about to send me to Hell.”
“I’m glad you’re okay,” Matt said softly.
They were saved from further conversation by two cell phones ringing in tandem. Karen and Foggy both stepped into their offices to answer the calls while Matt remained where he was.
“You should get some pepper spray or something,” he said softly.
“I took self defense classes. I actually punched one of the guys last night in the face a couple of times.” She didn’t know why she felt defensive.
The line of Matt’s jaw went taught. His knuckles were white around his coffee mug. “You have to be careful,” he said after a minute. “Self defense classes are great and all, but what if Daredevil hadn’t shown up?”
Grace swallowed and looked down, grateful he couldn’t see the blush on her cheeks. He was right, she knew, but it still stung. She didn’t want to be seen as weak and incapable anymore. She’d spent years of her life filling that role with Dean. It was one of the reasons she’d liked the self defense classes so much. And it had felt good to hit those men who were trying to hurt her, even though they had overpowered her easily. At least she’d fought back.
Several defensive retorts passed over her tongue but she bit them all back. Matt meant well. And he probably knew, better than anyone, what it felt like to be defenseless, to have to be extra careful. “I’ll order something online,” she finally said.
Matt nodded slowly. “I’m glad you’re okay,” he said again, more firmly.
Thankfully, the firm had a busy day and there was no more talk of Grace’s adventures the night before. She wanted to pester Karen with questions about the vigilante, but never had a chance.
By the time the work day was over, Grace’s head felt like it was splitting in two, and even four cups of coffee was doing nothing to help keep her awake.
She half-stumbled back to Ryan and Jess’s, waving off the offers for someone to walk with her. It wasn’t that far from the firm, after all, and it wasn’t even dark yet.
Ryan and Jess were both busy, Max with his grandparents, so Grace was able to languish in the shower for a little longer than normal. By the time she was done and ready for bed, it was dark out. She crawled into her car, bone-tired, and fell asleep much more quickly than usual, not even bothering with dinner.
That night, she dreamt of red glass eyes and bruised knuckles and calloused fingertips.

Day 33: Delightful Character Interactions
https://homestuck.com/story/4294
The characters’ first steps into Godhood see them immediately capable of meddling with the narrative layer of their own universe - they are now one rank more powerful in the hierarchy of meta-narrative wackiness.
Curiously, rather than alienating them, their first godly powers actually allow them to remove a level of abstraction from the way that their interactions can be conveyed.
I must admit, I’m pretty accustomed to, and endeared to, the theory that Power is Inhuman, and tends to be alienating, but it’s nice to see Homestuck’s take on godhood be that it is what you make of it.
https://homestuck.com/story/4304
I think it’s really ironic how truly little any individual victim of Lord English knows about the guy. Like, even though he is arguably the most relevant person in Paradox Space, it doesn’t entail any glory for him at all.
He’s extremely coy about the fact that he’s the man behind everyone’s suffering. It’s like a little joke for his own private enjoyment, which would be slightly less funny if anyone other than him were in on it any more than they strictly need to be.
His influence is felt by absolutely everyone, but he doesn’t take credit for it most of the time.
https://homestuck.com/story/4358
The main takeaways from this absurd, delightful conversation are that Sollux is done with this shit, and Kanaya is consumed by vengeance.
Of the two, Sollux is definitely going to get the “nicer” deal if you can call it that, since by all accounts, he spends the remainder of eternity macking on Feferi and Nepeta.
Also, Karkat is just having the most enjoyable meltdown, I really do enjoy these sections where the characters are all together and interacting with each other accomplishing nothing of relevance. I don’t comment on it often, because I guess the thing that I’m most interested in is examining the themes of the story and mostly attracted to negativity. I’ve hardly had anything to say this post because it’s all fluff, and hardly any substance - worldbuilding and (admittedly excellent) irrelevant character interactions.
But it’s moments like these that really shine and help to turn a comic that could easily be relentlessly grim into a gutbustingly funny comedy full of endearing characters.
https://homestuck.com/story/4390
We’ll conclude here for tonight. I think we’re going to be cutting down to only 100 pages at a time for the forseeable future. Work is hells of busy, and I like distracting myself with stuff that’s not quite as cerebral when I can.
At that pace, it should take us a little over a month to finish.
For now, it’s Cam signing off, Alive, and not Alone.

The Last Lonely Song
published in The First Line (2018)
The window was open just enough to let in the cool night air. She pulled the light shawl more closely around her as she absentmindedly checked the clock and watched the tense muscles of her student’s back as he laboured away at the keys, his shoulders rising higher and head swivelling sideways as he tried to get his left and right hands to work together at a pace that was far beyond his ability. The last hour always crept by the slowest, and on a Thursday, it was especially unbearable. She could see frustration in the way her student kept subtly glancing at the clock as if afraid she would notice, and in the careless banging of chords, not even bothering to correct his wrong notes.
She checked the clock again. 9.48. Not too early to end the class, and it would give her plenty of time to prepare for the performance.
“Alright, that’s enough for today,” she said, stopping him in the middle of a particularly laborious section of scales. “Just work on the sections I pointed out, and remember to practice your scales before the next lesson.”
Instantly, life seemed to return to him, and before he was even out the door, she could see him frantically texting friends to ask them to meet up so they could all make the most of the rest of the night.
The door firmly locked, she turned to begin a familiar ritual: tidy the living room as if to make it presentable for guests, and take out the bottle of wine chilling in the fridge— she was about to finish the last dregs of a particularly good red, and was rather sad to see it go. Once that was done, she fished a slip of paper, carefully folded and refolded, out of her pocket. The handwriting on it had become more familiar to her than her own, the cursive bold and black against heavy cream paper, a slight perfume of freesia and orange-blossom lingering like a suggestion.
To 3304—
Your playing last night was as ever, sublime. I sat on my balcony watching the flowers sway
in the wind, and for a moment, I believed that they were truly dancing along, brought alive by
your music. For tonight, I would love to hear one of Chopin’s pieces, the Ocean etude.  I first
heard this piece when I was a young girl at a concert, at the performance of a friend who has
long since passed. Some days, only memories and your music makes these hours pass easily.
Hoping you are well.
4304
She ran a searching finger over her shelves, a lifetime of collecting scores arranged onto an entire wall of shelves, spines worn and peeling, some from her childhood days. If anyone were to enter her home, they would find themselves inexplicably drawn to the grand piano and the shelves surrounding it, stuffed into the corner like an afterthought but spilling out so that they seemed to dominate the entire room without trying. They were arranged by year rather than composer—the year that she had started learning the piece, each year separated by a neat divider with her age at the time written on it. Standing back slightly, one could see the bulk of scores concentrated in the 15 to 18 sections, and they trailed off significantly after the age of 25. She found the etude squeezed between an exercise by Czerny and Tchaikovsky’s first piano concerto, so far from sight that another might have thought she was hiding it.
The inside of the cover stuck slightly to the first page as she peeled it open, awash in memory. She remembered performing this piece at the first competition she joined, a piece that she’d poured every waking moment of six months into internalising and perfecting, stripping it down until she was sure she had almost forgotten what it truly sounded like. She’d won second-place in that competition, and then stuffed the etude at the bottom of the pile until she moved out of her parents’ house, never played again. If she closed her eyes, she could probably conjure up the exact moment of waiting in the wings, trembling with fear and bile rising in her throat, but today, it no longer felt the same way.
Now, there was only left a sense of curiosity as to how this would turn out, and what would be left. She tried to remember how the piece went, but only snatches of the main melody came to her. The clock ticked slowly down to 10.30, and she flexed her fingers while tapping out sections that her younger self had marked with huge, loopy ’practice!!’ signs. When she felt ready, she drained the last of her wine and stood up to cast the windows wide open, sitting down at her piano to begin.
Pieces like this that were requested by the upstairs neighbour often required her full attention, especially since she hadn’t played it in a while. The rippling chords, the careful exchange of melody from one hand to the other created a whirlwind of frenetic energy in the room, and she felt herself sink fully into the piece, like a warm bath at the end of the day.
She’d forgotten how much she loved the piece at first, before it was torn apart. There were old favourites in the turn of her left hand, a new sense of ease in the runs of the right hand after years of playing, the whole thing coming together in a cataclysmic performance for herself, as well as person that she had never seen in all these years of night-time performances. The piece wound to a close, with her slowing down and savouring the last few moments she spent with it. She could never be sure if the person beyond the window had heard the playing, but as usual, she closed her eyes and imagined that she could hear applause echoing around the room.

I Am Not The Devil (Trixya) Part two- 4amdiirtykisses
In this part we see Trixie go to her first classes and meet some new people. She hears some “rumours” about a certain few people and the school itself. If you like it, feel free to leave any feedback! Word count: 4304.
Trixie woke up the next day alone, Katya’s bed unmade and messy, having been empty for a while. Trixie was slightly disappointed and concerned- she came to bed late and got up early, surely she must be exhausted and that wouldn’t be nice when going through a full school day.
Still, there wasn’t Trixie could do about it just yet, so she took a quick shower in the shared bathroom, got changed, and headed back to her room to find her stationary kit she brought with her.
As she did so, she glanced back to Katya’s bed. She did have a while until breakfast, she thought to herself, and once she found her stationary, she put it on top of her dresser and made her way to Katya’s bed.
She made her bed neatly for her, setting up her pillows at the top and retucking the fitted sheet that had come off a bit. She took a step back, admiring her handiwork, and turned to go back to her own half of the room, when something caught her eye. It was a dusty purple-grey journal on Katya’s dresser, a pen and pencil next to it.
Curiosity shot through her, as well as guilt at even thinking about peeking at it. Biting her lip, she hovered nervously, balancing her weight between her feet, before she gave a quick look to the door and quickly hurried over to it.
Without opening she already doubted she’d be able to read it or that it’d be in English, and her thoughts were confirmed when she opened it to see elegant handwriting in a language she didn’t understand, but already admired the way it looked in Katya’s handwriting.
She flipped through pages, noticing a few little sketches in the corner of some pages, the way the hand writing varied from neat and elegant to messy and lots scribbled out and some sentences seemingly stopped randomly.
Throughout would be a few pages written in English, some just a few sentences, but all fluent and in the same elegant or messy scrawl Trixie admired. Not wanting to intrude further, she didn’t let herself read what the ones in English actually said, and she quickly closed it and took a moment to put it back on her dresser in the same position it was before, and quickly hurried to grab her stationary kit and get out of the room as if she was afraid someone would find her.
While Trixie did feel guilty for looking through Katya’s journal, something which she obviously cared for with the amount of pages filled in with dedication, but she tried to reassure herself with the fact she couldn’t read most of it, and what she could, she didn’t, and only admired the handwriting, which wasn’t a bad thing, right?
She shook her head to herself and let out a sigh, forcing her thoughts aside as she made her way down towards the dining hall. Just before she could reach the doors, a hand fell onto her shoulder and she jumped slightly, whipping around to look at who it was, and sighed in relief when she saw it was just Adore, smiling at her with wide eyes.
“You scared me, Adore!” She exclaimed, letting out a long breath but softened it with a small chuckle.
“Sorry! I’m just happy to see you!” Adore said defensively, grinning at her and slinging her arm around Trixie’s shoulders as they continued walking into the hall and up to the serving tables.
“You won’t be able to see me again if you kill me with a heart attack!” Trixie exclaimed dramatically, nudging Adore in the ribs. She liked Adore- she was easy and comfortable to be around, funny, and kind.
They walked to what Trixie assumed was ‘their’ table now when they got their food, Adore rambling on about what happened in her English class yesterday and how they were studying Shakespeare and she just didn’t understand it.
Trixie tried her best to help explain it to Adore through bursts of laughter, but eventually gave up and resigned herself to at least trying to eat the two slices of toast and apple she got for breakfast, listening as a conversation between everyone picked up between everyone and more people arrived, pulling chairs around the table and crowding together.
Bianca was complaining half-heartedly when Adore playfully nudged her or leaned on her or got too close to her, her insults falling soft by the small smile on her lips. Willam and Courtney were muttering amongst themselves, occasionally broken by Courtney’s loud, high-pitched laughter or Willam’s deep, rumbling, occasional-snort laughter. Sharon was talking to Alaska, their seats pushed right against each other and her foot brushing along Alaska’s ankle, while Alaska played with her hair or interrupted Sharon to feed her a bite of her mostly-forgotten breakfast. Violet was half asleep but picking at her breakfast and fixing her posture whenever she began to slump.
Trixie was focused on her breakfast, moving on to her apple and taking the knife from her tray and cutting the apple into small slices and picking them up with dainty fingers to drop them in her mouth.
Breakfast moved quickly, people too tired to try and act energetic but taking comfort in one another’s presence, occasionally turning their attention from their food to someone to talk to briefly. Trixie didn’t mind it- her mind was still in bed, it felt like, and she wasn’t sure she’d be able to contribute to any attempts at conversation if any came.
Trixie was excited when breakfast finally ended and she could hurry along to her first class- English. She was excited to see if she knew anyone in her class, and what they’d be learning.
She tried her best to remember the way Courtney had taken her yesterday, and she managed to scurry into her classroom. Inside, she hesitated, deliberately taking slow steps so she could take in the classroom.
Tables were in twos and there were five columns of them, falling to the back of the class. There was a large, old style chalkboard at the front, and just to the side of that was the teachers large desk and a few filing cabinets and a wooden bookshelf.
People were filling up the seats that Trixie assumed they probably had had for a while, and she decided to wait at the front to avoid snatching someone’s seat and causing any problems.
Only a minute passed and she was getting a few odd and curious looks when a hand heavily clapped down on her shoulder. Choking down a yelp of surprise, Trixie whipped around to see who it was- she was half-expecting it to be Adore again, and she had a half-joking complaint on her lips, but that died when she saw it was, in fact, not Adore, but a smirking Sharon.
“Hey, doll, looks like we’re in the same class together,” she said, “hope I didn’t scare you- you looked scared enough just standing up here,” she stated, and Trixie jokingly rolled her eyes.
“I just didn’t want to take anyone’s seat!” She defended, and Sharon slid her hand down from her shoulder to her wrist, and began leading her down the aisle of tables and to one in the back corner by a window overlooking the forest, which she loved, if she could say.
Sharon gestured for Trixie to take the seat by the window, while she took the one next to her and slumped into it, stretching her long legs out under the table.
“It’s a dog eat dog world in here, doll, if a girl’s gotta take another girls seat, it’s what she’s gotta do,” Sharon stated dramatically, loosely folding her arms over her chest.
“I think that’s a bit dramatic,” Trixie snickered lightly, pulling her notepad and pen out and placing it on the table in front of her, “so, ah, what are we doing in this class?” She asked, casting a quick glance to the teacher at the front of the class, waiting patiently for the rest of the class to come in. She was a short, plump woman, with short, curly ginger hair that rested on her shoulders, thin and overlined lips and round eyes with poorly done bright blue eyeshadow.
“Oh, well, last lesson we were reading some poetry or something- I don’t know, I got sent out of class last time- I didn’t do anything! –so I’m about as clueless as you,” Sharon said, shrugging and raising her hands defensively. “Probably just analysing a poem or something, nothing too much, you’ll catch on,” she assured her, groaning quietly as the last pupil came in and the teacher got up.
The lesson was… Interesting. Well, not the lesson itself, but Sharon’s commentary that Trixie had no doubt she did whether someone sat by her or if she was on her own, and Sharon’s argument with the teacher half way through. At least Sharon made the lesson more entertaining when they fell into analysing the poem (it was Aunt Julia  by Norman Maccaig, and Sharon had been right about them analysing.)
“All I’m saying,” Sharon exclaimed, hands in the air defensively, “is that Aunt Julia was being a bit of a-“
“Sharon! If you don’t stop, it’ll be straight to the principals office,” the teacher, who Trixie had come to learn was called Miss Gordon, snapped back at Sharon, and Trixie could almost see her having to hold herself back before she said something that would get herself fired.
“For what?” Sharon cried, and fell back in her chair, throwing her hands up before sighing and waving them dismissively. “Fine, fine! You won’t hear a peep!” She said, making a zipping motion over her mouth and crossing her arms across her chest.
Trixie looked at her with a contained smile of humour, forcing herself not to burst into giggles, her hand covering her mouth just in case. “Sharon,” she said in a hushed tone, nudging her leg slightly, “caaaalm, it’s just a poem,” she said teasingly, giggling at the playful glare the blonde sent her.
“Just a poem! Poem my ass! This poem is serious and it must be looked at in depth and we have to acknowledge the fact the Aunt-freakin’-Julia was just an-“
“We get it!” Trixie hurried, shaking her hands near Sharon to cut her off quickly, “Aunt Julia’s a bully, you’re passionate about poetry, we get it!” She said, a wide grin on her features.
“Girls!” Miss Gordon’s voice cut through the air and straight to them, making Trixie stiffen and her laughter die immediately. She opened her mouth again to lecture her and Sharon, but was cut off by the school bell going, and Trixie let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding.
“Leave,” Miss Gordon said, sounding completely defeated now, and slumped in her seat. Trixie risked a glance at Sharon, who looked at her at the same time, and Sharon burst into laughter, triggering Trixie into the same laughing fit while she shakily gathered her things.
“I hope you’re enjoying school, doll,” Sharon said through wheezing breaths, pushing her chair under the table with her foot and clapping a hand on Trixie’s back.
“I am,” Trixie replied, nodding and running her fingertips under her eyes and letting out a long breath, following Sharon out of the class. “Also,” she said, raising her eyebrows, “why do you keep calling me that? Doll?” She asked curiously, pursing her lips.
Sharon stared at Trixie for a long moment, lips parted, before they turned up into her signature smirk and she minutely shook her head. “You remind me of one,” she stated, waving her hand up and down Trixie. “Big blonde hair, doe eyes, so much pink,” she said, and Trixie cocked her head to the side.
“Well, um, thanks? I think?” Trixie said with a soft snicker, shrugging. At least she thought it was a compliment.
“Well, it wasn’t an insult, at least,” she said, moving closer to her and wrapping her thin arm around Trixie’s shoulder. “What have you got now?” She asked, tapping her chin and grinning.
“Uh,” Trixie hesitated, stumbling into Sharon’s side when she pulled her closer, her eyes rolling around the hallway, “religious-moral studies, I think,” she said, nodding afterwards to confirm it, and watched as Sharon’s eyes lit up.
“Epic,” she said, grin seeming to widen, “everyone else has it now, too, so you probably have the same timetable as all of us, at least,” she said, and Trixie just nodded.
“The teacher’s a bit, uh, obsessive? But, I mean, if you’re all about religions and morals and stuff, this is the class for you, but pretty much all of us, everyone you’re hanging about with, the cool kids, we’re not… Crazy about it,” Sharon shrugged, and Trixie looked at her curiously.
“I mean, my parents are, and my last school and town was, so I’m kind of used to the long religious speeches and stuff,” she said, shrugging half-heartedly.
“Oh,” Sharon said, raising her eyebrows, “well that’s fun,” she said, narrowing her eyes in thought before deciding to face forwards and continue to guide the way to their next class.
When they walked in, Sharon was quick to holler a greeting to the back, where Trixie noticed the majority of their group already sitting there. Bianca, Adore, Courtney, Joslyn, and Dela were sitting at one of the large tables, and they waved happily to the two of them, quickly gesturing them over, and Sharon was happy to scurry over and drag Trixie over too.
They fell into a brief conversation as they waited for the teacher to start the class, which he did so quickly. He was a tall, well-built man but becoming slightly pudgy and weary with age, but he carried himself like a marine. His voice boomed out across the classroom, and Trixie jumped the first time he spoke because she hadn’t expected that. His eyes were dark and cold and had a tendency to look even more hateful any time he glanced in the direction of their table, for some reason, and Trixie’s playful energy from last class disappeared almost immediately.
He droned on about the rules of the school, about their standards and what the school was ‘founded’ on and the schools own ‘comandments’. It was something Trixie found interesting, but completely forced by an underlying hatred for something, and it made her uncomfortable, especially when it was accompanied by glares directed to her friends sitting around her with solemn expressions.
The class went by all too slowly, and everyone seemed completely drained as they silently trudged out of it, the burning glare from Mr Fraser following them as they left to go to the courtyard for break.
“What’s his deal then?” Trixie asked shortly after, when everyone was sitting down on the grass outside, picking at any snacks they had.
People exchanged glances, and Dela sighed. “He doesn’t like one of the courses this school offers,” she said, “and since some of us do it,” there was a pointed look to Sharon and Adore, and a brief glance to Violet, “he hates all of us. Probably you too, now, since he saw you with us,” she said, grimacing apologetically.
Trixie felt the familiar frustration and curiosity bubbling up in her- again with these ‘courses’ that people refused to tell her about. She opened her mouth, fully ready to re-ask her questions about it, when she snapped her mouth shut. They’d already proven they weren’t going to say anything, or at least not yet, and she didn’t want to seem annoying asking about them again and again.
“I’m not too keen on him either,” she decided to say, shrugging and turning her attention to the orange she was absentmindedly fiddling with, and began to pick off the peel.
The rest of the day was fairly uneventful- everyone was tired and drained at break and focused more on their food than conversation, and her classes before lunch found herself with people she didn’t know (but she did make some new friends with a girl called Shea, Sasha, Naomi, and Kim,) and lunch was quieter as everyone who did the ‘other classes’ weren’t there this time, but everyone else seemed in much better moods since break.
After lunch she had art with Sasha and a girl called Nina, and she was in complete awe at both of the girls artistic skills- both of them were amazing at art, and had different, unique art styles, too, and Trixie wished she was half as good as they were, though she prided herself in her music skills more than her art skills.
They were nice to work with and Trixie left the class in a good mood, happily entering history after it.
Trixie found Alaska in history and she invited her to sit next to her, and she was happy for the opportunity to get spend more time with Alaska- she had been intrigued by her when she first heard her name, and she seemed like a nice person, and that class confirmed it.
That was her last class for the day, and she followed Alaska back to the courtyard where they met with other people, killing time until dinner by messing around or doing homework.
Trixie had begun working on her art homework with Sasha, sitting cross-legged on the ground, when someone approaching made her look up. A smile grew on her face to find Sharon coming towards them, but it immediately was replaced by a concerned frown when she saw her state. She was pale- paler than she usually was, anyway- and her entire body was trembling and she looked like she was furiously holding back a flood of emotion and on the verge of vomiting.
Sharon immediately went straight to Alaska, grabbing the girls hand and dragging her away and out of sight around the corner of the building. Just after that, she looked around to see Bianca and Dela whispering together, and Bianca murmur something about Adore and then getting up and leaving to go inside.
Trixie hadn’t even realised she was getting up to her feet when Sasha placed a hand on her leg, and then reached up for her hand, urging her to sit back down and shaking her head.
“It’s okay, they’ve got this handled. It’s nothing to worry about, unlike this homework we’ve got,” she said, and like that, she was back to focusing on her homework, the concern for her friends still there but tucked aside, wrestling with the guilt for not going to check on them.
Dinner was unusually quiet, Bianca and Alaska sitting next to each other and poking at their food or whispering to each other. Dela tried her hardest to make a conversation last, but even Joslyn was too unnerved to keep it going, and Trixie couldn’t help but feel anxious and put off her dinner by everything going on.
After dinner, she decided to just go to her room rather than follow the others to the break room or the courtyard again, and she immediately collapsed onto her bed, letting out a long sigh.
Today had been a rollercoaster of emotions, and she was feeling exhausted and frustrated from it all. She stayed in her bed for several  long moments, before her eyes travelled around the room, eventually landing on the journal and pen that had been given to her when she came to the school- a journal that every student apparently got for them to keep a diary in it.
Deciding it couldn’t hurt, she stretched out for it and opened it to the first page, clicking the pen on, and began to write. She wrote about how her classes went, wrote about all the people she met, and wrote about how she had never felt so confused in her life before, like there was a huge secret that wasn’t really a secret that everyone knew but her, and it was almost painful now to not be let in on it.
She finished it by signing her name with a heart above the ‘I’, and then put it back on her dresser. She did feel a slight pressure relieve from her when she finished writing out her emotions, and was happy that she had done it and she didn’t feel as silly about the idea of writing a diary at her age anymore.
Feeling less tense and not like she was about to explode with overflowing emotions, Trixie could finally relax into her bed- close her eyes, and think without working herself up. She let her mind wander for whoever knows how long, until the sound of the bedroom door opening jolted her out of her thoughts.
She cracked her eyes open, watching as Katya threw a cautious glance in her direction, but when she noticed Trixie was, in fact, awake, she opened the door more and stepped in, closing it behind her and then walking to her colourless side of the room. Katya, Trixie noticed, didn’t look too well either- slightly pale and shaky and like she was forcing herself to distract herself with the way she sat on her bed and pulled out homework to do.
Minutes passed, Katya busy with reading her homework and Trixie content in her tired, relaxed state, until Katya was the one to break it.
“Do you have a pen?” She asked, and Trixie was so shocked by the simple words that it took her a moment to realise she was supposed to reply.
“Oh, ah, yeah-yeah, one sec,” Trixie stammered, basically scrambling off her bed and reaching for a pen sitting on her dresser. She quickly hurried over to where Katya sat, almost looking confused at Trixie’s odd reaction, but accepted the pen with a quiet thank you, taking the lid off and putting it on the back.
Trixie say back on her bed, eyes trained on Katya as if she was the most interesting thing ever, hoping against hope that she’d speak again. When she realised it was extremely awkward that she was staring, she turned quickly busying herself in pulling her books out and going over her notes from class.
“So, what’s your story then? Why are you here?” Katya asked several minutes later, breaking the silence once more. Trixie looked up, raising her eyebrows. “What do you mean?” She asked, cocking her head to the side.
Katya glanced briefly at Trixie. “Why did you come here? Most people don’t volunteer to come here,” she stated, and Trixie nodded.
“My school has a lot of offers for experience and working in different schools and states, and this was one of them,” Trixie said, shrugging, “my parents liked this one the best and it was also one of the closest, so here I am,” she explained, spreading her arms out and offering a smile to Trixie.
“Probably the most simple and best story I’ve heard so far,” Katya commented.
“Well, what about yourself? Why did you come here?” Trixie asked curiously, but immediately regretted it when she saw the way Katya’s face fell. “Or,” she said quickly, “how long have you been here?” She asked instead, letting out a sigh of relief when she saw Katya relax.
“Just under two years,” Katya said, glancing around the room, before adding something to her writing.
“Wow,” Trixie said, “I guess you’re pretty familiar with everyone then. There’s way more people here than I expected and I’m just waiting for the moment that someone comes to speak to me and I can’t remember their name- coincidentally the day I leave out of embarrassment, too,” Trixie rambled, a light pink dusting her cheeks as she thought about that situation happening, but she grinned slowly when it tore a breathy laugh from Katya.
“I only remember, like, three people’s names now. The trick is to give them a new nickname every time you see them and stay one step ahead of them and they’ll never know,” Trixie said when she recovered, eyes lighting up.
“Speaking of which- we never really got introduced,” Katya said, setting her pen and paper to the side of the bed and making her way over to Trixie (even her just coming closer to her had Trixie’s heart stuttering in irrational ways) “I’m Yekaterina Petrovna Zamolodchikova, but you can call me Katya,” she said, extending a hand after a moment of hesitation.
Trixie blinked a few times, trying to process her name, before she looked up at her with a smile, shifting on the bed to reach out and take her hand. “Trixie Mattel,” she said in response.
Katya returned to sitting on her own bed after that, eyes flicking from her work to Trixie every so often.
“Y’know, everyone at this school just seems so mysterious. And they make everyone else at this school out to be more mysterious than they are, too,” Trixie commented, receiving a quizzical look from Katya.
“Yeah, well, some people have secrets, some people want to protect overs from certain things at this school,” she said, eyes darkening and she quickly looked back to her work. “I wouldn’t worry too much about that, now. I’m sure they’ve made me out to be a complete lone wolf, but we’re roommates. I thought I might as well make an effort to get to know you and see if I like you,” she said, shrugging as she scribbled something down across her paper.
“And?” Trixie asked.
“And what?”
“Do you? Like me?”
“Yes, I like you, doll.”
