Karkat Vantas, John Egbert
Act 5, page 2928-2941
CG: YOU MADE AN UNBEATABLE BOSS IS WHAT YOU DID.
CG: THE IDIOT YOU CALL THE JADE HUMAN WENT AHEAD AND PROTOTYPED HER FREAK OF A LUSUS, WHILE YOU DECIDED TO TAKE A NAP FOR SOME REASON RATHER THAN DOING WHAT A LEADER IS SUPPOSED TO DO AND STOP HER FROM BEING SO FUCKING RETARDED.
CG: YOUR VERSION OF JACK, WHO YOU WERE SOMEHOW DUMB ENOUGH TO ENTRUST WITH THE QUEEN'S RING, BECAME ESSENTIALLY INDESTRUCTIBLE.
CG: HE THEN WENT ON A RAMPAGE THROUGH YOUR POINTLESS SESSION, WHICH HILARIOUSLY, WAS ALREADY A LOST CAUSE EVEN BEFORE THIS HAPPENED!
CG: I AM JUST BESIDE MYSELF WITH THE SPECTACULAR BREADTH OF YOUR FAILURE.
CG: AND IF THIS WASN'T BAD ENOUGH
CG: YOUR "SOLUTION" LATER WOULD BE TO OPEN A RIFT IN SOME GLORIOUS GESTURE OF MEANINGLESS SUICIDE.
CG: AND I HAVE NO IDEA HOW
CG: BUT THE RIFT YOU OPENED ENABLED HIM TO ENTER OUR SESSION, JUST AS WE WERE ABOUT TO CLAIM OUR PRIZE.
CG: AND NOW WE'RE THE ONES WHO TO FUCKING DEAL WITH HIM!
CG: SO THANKS A LOT, SHIT HEAD.
EB: jade prototyped a lusus?
EB: what's that?
CG: OH
CG: OK, MY BAD, I FORGOT I WAS TALKING TO A MEMBER OF A GENERICALLY BIZARRE ALIEN SPECIES.
CG: I GUESS SOME HUMANS HAVE A LUSUS, WHILE OTHERS DON'T? WHATEVER.
CG: HER LUSUS IS THE CREATURE WHICH SERVES AS HER CUSTODIAN.
EB: oh, you mean her dog!
CG: I GUESS
EB: so, she prototyped becquerel?
EB: why is that so bad?
CG: JOHN, DO YOU EVEN KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT YOUR FRIENDS?
CG: IS THIS HOW HUMAN FRIENDSHIP WORKS? YOU JUST DON'T KNOW SHIT ABOUT EACH OTHER?
CG: HER LUSUS EXHIBITS THE PROPERTIES OF A LEGENDARY ENTITY CALLED A FIRST GUARDIAN.
CG: IT IS AN ABSOLUTE MONSTROSITY.
EB: what properties?
CG: OK, FOR STARTERS, NOTICE HOW THE FURIOUS WALL OF FIRE CURRENTLY RUSHING TOWARD YOU IS TURNING GREEN?
EB: uh oh...
CG: YEAH
CG: THOSE FUCKING PROPERTIES.
CG: BUT IT'S A LOT MORE THAN THAT.
CG: AS THE DEFENDERS OF THEIR PLANETS, THEY'RE VIRTUALLY OMNIPOTENT.
CG: PROTOTYPING ONE IS ABSOLUTELY UNCONSCIONABLE.
CG: THE RESULT IS A BOSS A HELL OF A LOT WORSE THAN WHAT WE HAD TO FIGHT, AND WE PROTOTYPED TWELVE TIMES RATHER THAN A MEASLY FOUR.
CG: AND ONE OF OUR PROTOTYPINGS INCLUDED AN OUTER FUCKING GOD THE SIZE OF A CITY!
CG: I HOPE THIS PUTS IN PERSPECTIVE HOW TERRIBLE YOU ARE.
EB: huh...
EB: yeah, it kind of does.
EB: i'm sorry karkat, i didn't realize we screwed up so bad.
CG: ALRIGHT WELL
CG: I WASN'T EXPECTING YOU TO MAN UP AND APOLOGIZE FOR IT, SO OK I'LL GIVE YOU CREDIT FOR THAT.
CG: BUT IT'S NOT STOPPING ME FROM DETESTING YOU AND IT SURE AS FUCK ISN'T GOING TO DERAIL THIS RUNAWAY HATE TRAIN, JUST SO YOU KNOW.
EB: oh, yeah, i know.
EB: you're really gonna tear me apart!
EB: i just feel kind of bad i fell asleep, i don't know what came over me.
EB: maybe i ate too much lasagna.
CG: HEY, INOPPORTUNE NAPS HAPPEN IN THIS GAME.
CG: EXCEPT TO ME, BEING THE STALWART MODEL OF LEADERSHIP I AM.
CG: I MANAGED TO STAY AWAKE FOR SEVERAL WEEKS STRAIGHT, I DIDN'T WANT TO LET MY GUARD DOWN FOR A SECOND.
CG: BUT THEN
CG: AFTER IT WAS ALL OVER, AND WE RETREATED IN FAILURE
CG: I FOOLISHLY DID.
CG: AND THAT'S WHEN I SAW HIM.
EB: who?
CG: JACK.
CG: I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE HIM WHEN HE FIRST APPEARED.
CG: BUT ON PROSPIT, I SAW HIM UP CLOSE, WITHOUT ALL THAT RIDICULOUS GREEN SHIT OBSCURING HIM.
CG: I COULD HARDLY BELIEVE IT WAS REALLY HIM BY THE WAY HE LOOKED, BUT I JUST KNEW.
CG: HE WAS WEARING A RING I DIDN'T RECOGNIZE, CERTAINLY NOT ONE BELONGING TO OUR QUEENS.
CG: WE DESTROYED THOSE.
CG: HE WORE IT ON HIS ONE HAND, WHICH WAS COVERED IN OUR MUTANT BLOOD.
CG: AND THEN
CG: JUST LIKE THAT
CG: HE KILLED ME
CG: AND I GUESS
CG: EVEN THOUGH IT WAS PROBABLY JUST HIS WAY OF SAYING HI
CG: I STILL FELT KIND OF BETRAYED.
EB: betrayed?
CG: YES JOHN. BETRAYED.
EB: um, ok.
CG: WHEN I WOKE UP, EVERYONE HERE WAS BUZZING ABOUT THESE ALIENS CALLED HUMANS.
CG: SO NATURALLY I'M LIKE WHO GIVES A SHIT, RIGHT?
CG: WELL, WRONG.
CG: I PRETTY QUICKLY DETERMINED THAT HE WAS FROM YOUR SESSION, NOT OURS.
CG: SO HE WASN'T REALLY "MY JACK"
CG: AND I WAS SORT OF RELIEVED
CG: RELIEVED BUT ALSO ENRAGED
CG: I'M SURE YOU KNOW THE FEELING.
EB: er...
EB: not really.
CG: ANYWAY, THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED, AND THAT'S WHY YOU ARE SUCH A DISGRACE.
CG: THIS IS PROBABLY THE LAST TIME I WILL EVER EXPLAIN ALL THIS STUFF TO YOU, BECAUSE I CAN'T IMAGINE IT WILL HELP MY HEADACHE MUCH TO REPEAT MYSELF.
CG: I BET IT'LL BE PRETTY FRUSTRATING FOR YOU IN THE PAST!
EB: i suppose it was...
EB: but meh, it is all water under the bridge.
EB: which is where trolls and their shenanigans belong!
CG: HA HA! I'M LAUGHING MY ASS OFF AT YOUR FUNNY FUCKING JOKE.
CG: I HOPE THIS IS THE CALIBER OF HUMOR I CAN EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE-PAST, EGBERT.
CG: IT'LL BE A REAL TREAT TROLLING YOU WITH MORE OF THOSE NUB SLAPPERS TO LOOK FORWARD TO!
EB: oh, there will be lots of great material. just wait until i start handing out rabbits, you will love that.
CG: WOW, WHAT A CRYPTIC STATEMENT.
CG: CHECK THIS OUT, I DON'T GIVE A FUCK.
CG: ANYWAY, GUESS I'LL GET GOING AND LET YOU DIE IN YOUR FIRE, WHICH YOU REALLY SHOULD, BUT YOU'RE OBVIOUSLY NOT GOING TO FOR SOME REASON.
CG: I'VE GOT TO REWIND THE TAPE ON THIS CLUSTERFUCK AND FIGURE OUT WHAT WENT WRONG.
EB: yeah, i should get going too.
EB: my friend is pestering me, and i doubt she likes to be kept waiting.
EB: (she is sort of the bossy type!)
CG: WHY WOULD I CARE ABOUT YOUR DUMB HUMAN FRIEND AND HER PETULANT, MEANINGLESS DEMANDS.
CG: WHAT COULD THAT POSSIBLY HAVE TO DO WITH ME.
EB: ummm...
EB: yeah, you're right, it is probably of no significance to you whatsoever.
EB: (hehehehe)
CG: A;SLDKJFSDLKFJS;LDJFLK;J
CG: HERE, JOHN HUMAN DIPSHIT.
CG: HAVE A SECOND AND PENULTIMATE FUCK YOU:
CG: "FUCK"
CG: "YOU"
CG: MAY IT MARK THE SECOND OF MANY TO COME, AND THE MAGNIFICENT DENOUEMENT TO MANY RECEIVED.
CG: TOGETHER WE JUST TUGGED AT THE BOW TO UNRAVEL A PRESENT FULL OF GO FUCK YOURSELF.
CG: HAPPY WRIGGLING DAY YOU UGLY PILE OF TRASH.

Fooling
Fandom: Chicago Fire
Pairing: Kelly Severide x Reader
Genre: humour, fluff, crack
Word Count: 2934
Requested By Anon: people think that you and kelly severide have something going on when in reality you only hooked up once and now you’re just super close friends. setting could be at molly’s and people are teasing you two about your “relationship”
A/N: I hope this hits the spot, anon! Happy reading!
-
It's a Tuesday morning, which in itself is nothing special or consequential. However, the feeling of three pairs of curious eyes on you and Kelly is something you make note of.
You're on the couch in the common room, facing towards the dining table with your feet in Kelly's lap. He's facing towards the TV also with a puzzle book in his possession, completely oblivious to the neighborhood watch from across the room.
You try to keep your head in your sudoku but from the periphery of your vision, the childlike gossiping and whispering is a major distraction. You sigh, flick your book to a blank back page and tear a piece off. Using the book itself to lean on as you write quickly, you slip the piece of paper onto the page of Kelly's puzzle book.
It reads: "Don't react. We're being watched. They still think we're together." Complete with crude doodles of the eye-roll emoji and laughing emoji.
Kelly's eyes light up with mischief as he reads the last line, mouth up turning into a smirk. He glances at you, not giving the prying watchers any of his attention.
In a hushed tone, gentle and sweet, Kelly speaks,
"I'm just gonna get a cup of coffee, you want one?"
The question is said in a way that is supposed to feign a private conversation, but ultimately Kelly knew he'd be heard.
You can’t help yourself, the mischievous nature is infectious. Playing along, rubbing his shoulder gently.
"That would be amazing, thanks."
The eyes watch curiously, looking for any giveaway that you were, in fact, a couple. One thing to note was that Kelly hadn’t used a term of endearment, and though you had touched his shoulder you were prone to being quite tactful with everyone - thus the onlookers could only conclude a touch to the shoulder, to show thanks, was hardly a lewd public act.
You swing your feet off Kelly’s lap and go back to doing your sudoku, playing it as cool as possible. Listening intently as Kelly putters about in the kitchen area, making coffee for the both of you.
One member of your audience pipes up. “Any for us, Lieutenant?”
“If you get up and make it, yeah.” He barely even glances at the owner of the voice, Otis, remaining stoic as he brings you your coffee and settles back down with your feet in his lap once more.
The small chorus of frustrated sighs makes you want to laugh. Their curiosity and misery would be over if they just asked.
But that would ruin their betting pool.
Herrmann and Joe are the other two in Otis' three, the ringleaders that had the whole firehouse placing bets on when you and Kelly would actually explicitly confirm your ‘togetherness’, as well as when the chief would ask you both to declare it officially as a romantic interpersonal relationship.
Casey, who happens to be passing by to get to the Chief's office, shakes his head at the three men watching you like meerkats over a parapet, chuckling at you and Kelly who were clearly making the most of the fun.
-
It’s late in the afternoon when Otis, Joe, and Herrmann get their next opportunity to make the bust. They, rightfully, think they’ve hit the jackpot as a courier turns up with a bouquet of flowers and a set of heart-shaped cupcakes, addressed to you. Surely this would be the moment the little card attached would read "Love, Kel" or "Love, K" and all would be revealed.
Oh, how easy that would be.
You were well aware of their eagerness to snoop, and so it was no mistake when you got up to put the flowers next to your bunk that you left the greeting card behind.
“To my sweet, Y/N. You are so beautiful, and I’m so proud of who you are. Thank you for being my-” There’s a pause in Joe’s reading, Otis and Herrmann look on in anticipation, “-… amazing little sister. Love, your big sister.”
There's a chorus of groans, the onlookers in the common room who also had their stakes in the betting pool just as disappointed as the three huddled around the piece of paper.
The card gets tossed angrily across the table, each of them huffing as they leave the common room to get some fresh air outside the app floor.
Elsewhere, you’re sitting on Kelly’s bed in his quarters, giggling quietly with him.
“I bet they were so excited when they saw that delivery. I gotta get my sister something as thanks.” You grin, winking at Kelly.
“I love this game.” Kelly snorts.
“Me too, dude. Me too.” You sigh happily, teasing your friends was just too easy. Leaning back against Kelly’s pillow, opening to the chapter in your book, as Kelly starts on some paperwork.
-
The shift passes without further incident, a string of calls takes you and Kelly away from your leisurely activities and the three musketeers have no further hopes of collecting evidence at work that day.
So, they put their hopes into the idea that it would come down to cracking the case at Molly’s later that evening.
You and Kelly are sitting with Matt and Sylvie enjoying drinks and some snacks, laughing about the latest in the Firehouse witch hunt for your relationship with the Lieutenant.
You take a sip of your cocktail, nudging Kelly in the ribs with a grin.
“I heard Tony placed a new bet with Capp that the Chief would ask about it next shift.”
Sylvie taps her finger on the table excitedly, getting your attention as she's mid-swallow of a mouthful of chips, enjoying the thrill of this high stakes game,
“And Mouch -as got it pl-aced in a week from'now.” You laugh at Sylvie's garbled speech, the message clear enough.
Casey shakes his head, amused, shrugging, “I was in a meeting with him this morning, he did ask about you and this guy, but I said I didn’t know.”
Kelly chuckles, patting Matt on the back. “That’s my buddy. Keep it up.”
A few more rounds in, and you’re listening to a story Sylvie is telling about one of her childhood mishaps involving a pig and torrential rain at the county fair when you catch the conspirators huddled around Herrmann at the bar. Your lips curve into amusement, taking the moment to wrap your arm around Kelly and lean against his shoulder.
Matt raises an eyebrow, and Sylvie briefly pauses her talking,
“Don’t look, they’re watching. Just roll with it. Sylvie don't you dare leave me hanging, carry on and tell me about what Mrs. Kitchner did once the pig got into the jam tent.”
Sylvie makes a face that says "You are not going to believe what that woman did." and proceeds to continue her tale. Kelly glances at you, giggling as he kisses your forehead. You hum contentedly, Kelly was still a great pillow even if he wasn’t your boyfriend but a best friend.
Over at the bar, Capp is not shy about spying on your table,
“A forehead kiss… what the crap, man. How are we supposed to know?”
“She’s snuggled right up to him, that’s gotta be proof!” Mouch grumbles.
Otis sighs, swirling his beer in his bottle. He hates to be the voice of reason when winnings are at stake, but he has to play fair. “You know damn well Y/N's a cuddler, and Kelly and Shay were just as close like that. It doesn’t mean anything.”
Mouch nods disappointedly, going back to the paper he had been reading.
Herrmann takes in the forlorn sight of his friends, shaking his head in incredulity. He loved a bet as much as the next person, but it wasn't the end of the world. He taps a glass on the counter, getting their attention. “Alright, break it up. You can’t gawk at them all night. And you yahoos need to buy some beer rather than taking up my bar space!”
-
It's your next shift when Mouch falls victim to the evergrowing hubbub surrounding this particular rumour. He had been sucked into the quest for the 'truth'. He was sitting on his bunk, glasses at the tip of his nose whilst perusing through some Union Rep paperwork, when he heard a most peculiar sound. Coming from the direction of Kelly's quarters no less.
Placing the folder to the side, pushing his glasses back onto his face, he silently stands up, creeping toward Kelly's door. He strains his ears, listening.
"Kelly, ah! Stop wiggling like that, you're hurting."
"I'm not wiggling, you're squirming. How's it jammed in so tight?"
"Please just move it already, it's putting my nerves on edge."
Mouch's face falls into a deep frown, trying to figure out what he's listening to. Then, his eyes pop open with realisation on his face.
Immediately moving to find Herrmann.
“Mouch, what are you doing listening to Kelly’s door anyway?” Herrmann frets, walking alongside his best friend.
“I wasn’t! They were being loud.” Herrmann sighs, carefully approaching to look out for any more sounds.
There’s a beat of silence before your voice is heard again,
“Ah, Kelly! Twist there, that’s it… no, no! Ah, you’re pulling too much.”
Herrmann snatches his body back from the door and stares at Mouch. He shrugs in an “I told you so.” kind of gesture.
There's movement from behind the pair and they turn to find Joe and Otis approaching with curiosity.
“What’s happening?” There's an unspoken acknowledgment that they should keep talking in hushed whispers as they come to join the older men spying.
“We think they're uh… doing 'it',” Mouch says hesitantly. Joe’s and Otis’ eyes light up with excitement and somehow disgust at the same time. Herrmann grimaces, for a multitude of reasons.
“Severide can’t be as good as the reputation might suggest, she seems very uncomfortable. This is an invasion of their privacy, we should go.”
Otis snorts, "Their privacy? Herrmann, my man, they're at work, besides-"
Back in the room, you’re squirming under Kelly’s touch, Kelly sighs.
“I’m gonna try and get something to lubricate it, maybe it’ll slide right out that way.”
You nod, lips pursed in irritation and pain. Grumbling as you patiently wait for Kelly to find a solution.
Outside the room, before the stalkers can even react to the words “Get something to lubricate”, the door opening startles the hovering troupe, and they all jump back in terror.
Kelly’s face falls into a scowl, pointing at Otis. Seemingly oblivious to the others.“You!”
Wild-eyed Otis points at himself. “Me? What's wrong with me?”
“Oh I'm so glad you asked, Brian, your stupid robot freaked out on Y/N and she’s got a piece of it stuck in her hair!”
At which point Kelly stalks off to find Sylvie, some conditioner to use on your hair, and hopefully a hairbrush. Otis winces at the use of his actual name, "Brian" around here usually meant he was in trouble.
Kelly's blustering exit leaves the dumbfounded group to peek sheepishly into the room where you remained. You're glancing at the doorway, one hand holding your hair and your head, the other clenched into the blanket on Kelly's bed. You’re sat with a piece of machinery tangled in your hair, looking to be in pain and thoroughly done with this day.
“Y/N, what happened?” Herrmann asks, concerned.
You glance at Otis, and you can see he gulps, which in any other circumstance would make you laugh but your scalp was hurting. “Otis’ robot thought I was a threat, it tried to extinguish me and then a piece came flying off from the pressure of the extinguish feature and it basically catapulted into my hair. It won’t come out.”
Joe smacks Otis upside the head and Otis has the good grace to look remorseful.
“I’m so sorry, Y/N. I’ll mail it back as soon as possible.”
You wave your hand away, "It's a bitch, but I know it was an accident. Just make sure it's gone, or Chief's gonna lose his shit."
"Yes, Chief is." The authoritative voice doesn't even have to be loud to make all of you jump, the boys spin round to see the Chief with his hands on hips in his usual stance, taking in the pathetic sight of you and your hair. Having done nothing wrong you still can't help but feel like you're in trouble.
Herrmann and Mouch move aside to let Boden further into the room, "You alright, Y/N?"
You smile weakly, "Yeah, Chief. Just a freak accident. Kelly's getting Sylvie and some supplies to solve it."
At that moment Sylvie makes herself known, Kelly in tow, she's holding a conditioner, a hairbrush, and a comb. "Cavalry's here." Her voice is worried but also laced with amusement and you can't help giggling at the stupidity of this whole thing too.
As Sylvie comes to sit by your side and work through the mess of your hair and the bits of robot that are stuck, Kelly shoos everyone else out of the room. As they usher out, you can hear Chief demanding that Otis get that 'godforsaken thing' out of his Firehouse immediately.
Leaving Mouch, Herrmann, and Joe with a Lieutenant who eyes them suspiciously with folded arms outside his door.
"Why were you outside my door?"
There's silence from the worried faces in front of Kelly, they really don't want to piss him off anymore.
"We, uh..." Herrmann starts.
"I thought you were having sex!" Mouch blurts out.
Kelly blinks. Face unreadable.
The Lieutenant makes a show of clenching his jaw, appearing to be pissed off. "Excuse me?"
"I-... Y/N was making a lot of noise, then I heard "tight", "that's it" and "just move" and I just..." Mouch is flushed pink with regret at a) Ever thinking you and Kelly were doing it and b) for giving such a detailed explanation on his thought process. Joe's holding his face in secondhand embarrassment.
There's more silence, and then Kelly's face cracks as his body starts to shake with laughter. Uncontrollable burbles of belly laughter as he ducks his head into his room, to see you and Sylvie both trying to stifle your hysterics.
"You heard that?"
Sylvie nods, "Yeah, Kelly. We-...We heard! Hahahaha!"
You're holding your stomach, trying to breathe through laughter. "Oh my god, OH MY GOD. Hahaha, Mouch. Poor Mouch. This betting pool's got them so messed up."
It's Herrmann's and Joe's faces that duck around the doorway next, simultaneously questioning,
"Betting pool?!"
"You know about this?!"
You and Sylvie have the good grace to look a little sheepish, but really it served them all right for snooping into your and Kelly's business.
You snort, keeping still as Sylvie keeps brushing with an amused expression. "Yes, of course, we knew about the betting pool. We've known about it for weeks."
"You've been playing us?" Joe looks hurt, only encouraging more giggles.
"We have, bud. And really well too." Kelly claps him on the shoulder, looking victorious.
Mouch gets over his confession, querying the other thing on his mind.
"So you aren't together?"
"Nope." Kelly shrugs.
"Negative." Your face is absolutely neutral, it was clear you were telling the truth.
"Oh come on, you gotta be kidding, you two are like-" Herrmann gestures, crossing fingers together.
"Yeah, we are. But as friends."
"So you didn't sleep together?" Otis has come back from his disposal duties.
Sylvie untangles the last few strands of hair, you breathe a sigh of relief and give her a side hug. Smiling at your rediscovered freedom. You stand and jab Otis in the chest playfully.
"Not that it's any of your business, but yes we slept together, it was great, duh, but we decided friendship was better for us. That cover everything now?"
Kelly is eyeing them all, with that look that unequivocally means "No more talking about this",
Joe steers Otis out the door, dragging Herrmann and Mouch with them, calling back to you and Kelly, Sylvie still thrilled about the revelations. "Yep, all covered. Thanks for the talk. We'll leave you to it."
-
Chief did ask about your interpersonal relationship with Kelly later that day, the others dared not try and cash in on that part either. You both did indeed reassure him that it was purely platonic. Satisfied that there was nothing to be made aware of, he let you be.
It took the others another week to fully shake their conspiracy, but as time passed they started to believe that what you and Kelly had was comfortable and close in the most unassuming of ways.
It wasn't until Capp very brazenly brought up a new betting stake at Molly's one night that a new pool began.
"So, are we gonna start guessing when they'll sleep together again?"
Tony smacks him upside the head, shaking his own in disapproval.
Everyone scoffs at Capp as if to say "Come on, man."
But as shenanigans are prevalent at Firehouse 51, your friends all start sidling up to Capp, starting with Otis one by one they all approach to input their guess.
A hand grips Capp's shoulder, he turns to see your face. Making him flinch, thinking he was about to be in some big trouble.
You lean in, speaking in a hushed tone. "I'll cut you in on the bet that it'll happen this weekend when we go hiking."
Capp grins. "Sold."
You wink, slinking back to Kelly, Jay, and Will at your table. Linking arms with your not-boyfriend and resuming the conversation.
-

Review: 19 Love Songs by David Levithan Rating: 4/5
"Reading is a conversation between you and an author, held inside the pages of a book."
David Levithan has cobbled together another gorgeous anthology of his short fiction and poems exploring different facets of identity, relationships and the importance of the written word. I look forward to his books every single year and this one has lived up to my expectations beautifully. I've reviewed each piece individually below.
Quiz Bowl Antichrist - 4/5 - Funny, a bit strange, and surprisingly good character development for a short story. So, the best kind of David Levithan story.
Day 2934: An Every Day Story - 5/5 - Always love revisiting A for a while and this story was especially sweet.
The Good Girls - 5/5 - Oh, a nonfiction piece. I liked this one!
The Quarterback and the Cheerleader - 4/5 - A sweet little story. I could’ve sworn I’ve read about Infinite Darlene before but I can’t figure out where. Love the trope subversion Levithan pulled off here too.
The Mulberry Branch - 5/5 - Lesbian bookworms falling in love in a narrative poem? Please and thank you!
Your Temporary Santa - 2/5 - Read previously in My True Love Gave to Me.
Storytime - 5/5 - A beautiful essay on how sometimes stories are useful but sometimes silence is too.
A Better Writer - 3/5 - Interesting but nothing to write home about.
8-Song Memoir - 1/5 - Just talking about music. Not especially interesting.
Snow Day - 5/5 - A gorgeous wee story about my favourite characters from Two Boys Kissing!
The Woods - 4/5 - A decent exploration of the power of fanfiction and pop music from an outsider’s perspective. I needed a better signal that some parts were excerpts from Owen’s stories though.
A Brief History of First Kisses - 2/5 - A cute little comic but the font was so small I could barely read it.
As the Philadelphia Queer Youth Choir Sings Katy Perry’s “Firework”… - 5/5 - Read previously in Proud: Stories, Poetry and Art on the Theme of Pride.
The Vulnerable Hours - 3/5 - A little too didactic for my taste but a sweet story nonetheless.
Twelve Months - 2/5 - Sweet but I feel like it needed more personality.
The Hold - 5/5 - A beautiful exploration of the intersection of being gay and being Jewish. I absolutely loved it - my favourite piece so far.
How My Parents Met - 5/5 - Another beautiful nonfiction piece. Sliding into second on the favourites list.
We - 3/5 - A cool story set at one of the Women’s Marches that happened just after Tr*mp was elected.
Give Them Words - 5/5 - A gorgeous ode to librarians and the wonderful work they do. A lovely ending for the collection.

Flash Fiction Friday: Forbidden Knowledge
@flashfictionfridayofficial And here we got the turning point of “The Insane God” the sequel to “Always Prepared”. It has been five years since Nesryn ended up in the alternative world of Mitresk and created a comfortable life for herself which is now threatened by strange attacks against the dragons with no suspect or hint left behind.
Nesryn almost forgot about the strange book she got from the ambassador of Sharikolash weeks ago until it almost knocked her out when she searched something in her library at home and brought it back to her mind. Still rubbing her head she stared at the thick book. She remembered it was written in her mother tongue what was already weird enough given the fact no one in whole Mitresk knew it, and the mystery about it being the modern form she grew up with while the book was at least thousands years old was even weirder. “Ok, I will dive into you”, she threatened the book. With a thud, it landed on the couch behind her. Nesryn got herself some new coffee before she got ready. As she opened it she found some note tucked in a pocket inside the book. “Copied by hand in 876 After Kasht… in 1907 After Kasht … in 2934 After Kasht … in 3898 After Kasht … in 4992 After Kasht.” With the thought of how crazy it must have been for the people more than five thousand years ago to copy something in a language they don’t understand she opened it for real. The first impression was wrong it wasn’t more than thousands of years old, it was the last time it got copied to preserve it. It was another mystery but someone obviously hoped that someday there will be a person who can read it. It got weirder with every second. Just to be sure she let her energy magic run through the papers. It felt as old as Alashtaire which meant it was really more than thousands of years old. She got more comfortable on the couch now this has been cleared and began to read, only to stop after the first page. Her gaze went to the door with a huff and squinted eyes as she read it again. “My name is Alexander Pol, I was born on Earth May 4th 2001 and ended up in Mitresk in 2030 or in Mitreskian counting 6033 After Kasht. The world I met was war-ridden and it seemed like everyone fought everyone for dominance. I heard stories about the world before what locals called “Human Freedom War”. I managed to find friends among humans and dragons alike and the last ones were able to use the secret knowledge of how to create a gate through space and time. I was sent back with a group of five. Three dragons and two humans but our plan didn’t work out as planned. We should have ended in 6025 After Kasht before the war breaks out, but we got send back multiple thousands of years. After a few days of disorientation, we figured out we ended up in the time of Kasht long before he taught the first human. But this wasn’t the only surprise. There were stories about gods told to us. It seems like there were gods once in Mitresk similar to the Norse gods on Earth who vanished mostly with only a few left about five hundred years ago or more about 800 Before Kasht out of a sudden. With the stories, I was told and the things I knew about the future I decided to write the myths down for those from Earth who will come within the next seven thousand years for them to be warned of the things to come and be armed with the knowledge they need. These are the myths of the old Mitreskian gods. The gods that got banished from this realm by the dragons. Let their tales be your warning.” Again Nesryn squinted at the page. She sucked in her lower lip with small nods. If all of this was true, Alexander warned her of a war who was about to start within the next eight years. And he gave her the tool to understand why dragons got attacked but humans didn’t over the last months. The chances his words were true were higher than she would have liked to admit with all the secrets of the dragons Nesryn ran into during the last five years. She got up and went to hang up the red shield on her door that was the usual warning sign she was researching and disturbances would end with death. This time this could be taken literally. This book would give her all the answers she needed about the current event and maybe find an answer to how Lorkin’s reoccurring and continuing dreams were involved in all this. But most of all it could prepare her for the things to come. “Give me all your forbidden knowledge”, Nesryn picked the book up again.

19 Love Songs by David Levithan
Photo courtesy me, my phone, and my Target curtains
I am a sucker for David Levithan. His writing, his characters, and the stories he tells are just some of the many reasons I love to read and want to work in publishing. So when I heard that he had an anthology of short stories coming out, specifically love stories, I was over the moon. Needlesstosay, I jumped at the opportunity to get my hands on an ARC from my roommate who works at PRH.
I found this book to be the perfect read for my commute into the city from Brooklyn because it was small enough to fit in my bag and each story was long enough for the longest part of my journey. This also helped spread out my reading, letting me savor the stories individually rather than devouring them all in one go.
I loved that some of the stories were just on the edge of familiar because they featured characters that I vaguely recognized from some of his other books while others were entirely new. I think my favorite was The Woods because the whole thing about Taylor Swift I found amusing and endearing, but close to the top would be his parents love story which had me teary-eyed.
If you enjoy anthologies, or David Levithan, or both, I would highly recommend.
Keep reading for some of my favorite quotes from just some of the stories!
Quotes:
Quiz Bowl Antichrist:
“I’m not a very happy person, but sometimes I can trick myself into thinking I am.” “When I looked at Wes, he made me feel like I might be worth saving.”
Day 2934:
“She is looking at something that isn’t there. She is looking at nothing at all. She is seeing something without looking. She is in the room and she isn’t in the room. She is lost in her own private universe, a vast and small place that I can only see as it’s reflected in her body. It is not sadness I see. I would understand sadness. I see, instead, what an adult looks like when she is unmoored from gravity. When she forgets what gravity is like. When the pull of other universes is so faint that there is only the private universe left.”
The Quarterback and the Cheerleader:
“He watches her but not critically. He watches her, but not intrusively. There are some dates when all the other person wants to do is erase your story and write you into his. This is not one of those dates.”
When you exist as your own creation – that is, when you have worked so hard in creating yourself – it is sometimes difficult to let other people get close enough to see the seams, the flaws, the parts of you that aren’t quite done yet.
When a first date really works, it works like this: you feel the thrill of opening to the first page of a book. And you know – instinctively, you know – it’s going to be a very long book.
8 Track Memoir:
As I get older, I realize we don’t need love songs that blind us with the cliches. We need the love songs that tell the truth and convey it convincingly
Especially when we’re in love, we play hide-and-seek with ourselves.
The Woods:
I feel it behooves the situation for one of us to be telling the truth. And anyone who answers yes to a question like Do you promise not to judge? is unquestionably a liar. Judgment is not something one can control–only the expression of judgment can be tamed.
I am not, it seems, either out of the woods or in the clear. I turn off iTunes, but the tunes still play inside of I. I’m brushing my teeth to a blank space. I’ve got a James Dean look in my eye as I get out of the day’s clothes. And when I’m in bed, phone at my side, waiting for another word from him, I go back into the out-of-the-woods-out-of-the-woods-out-of-the-woods.
When you love someone, the emotional distance you travel can feel very much like time itself.
As the Philadelphia Queer Youth Choir Sings Katy Perry’s “Firework”:
This has to be what love is, to physically feel a person even though you’re not actually touching.
The Vulnerable Hours:
The truth feels different from other things. The closest you can come to describing it is that it feels like taking the perfect breath.
The Hold:
“It’s hard,” he said after he’d taken about ten minutes to tell me how okay he was. “When you’re raised one way and then try to raise yourself another ay. You’re given this absolute, then, wham, it’s no longer an absolute. All along you thought God was closed to interpretation. It’s like being told there’s no physics or chemistry, or that the dictionary isn’t real.”

'Fjord swallowed his sip of wine and smiled at Caleb, oh boy oh boy, this was it…
In that moment Jester’s mind raced with the possibilities of how Fjord would react. Would he gasp and exclaim that he had never seen Caleb in this light before? Would he try to take his hand and profess his love? Jester had been making a concerted effort to separate fantasy romance from real life in her mind, but old habits die hard, and really, what belonged in the pages of a smutty novel more than a love potion?'

Northern Lights, pt. 3 - Stiles Stilinski
Description She comes to those who are in need. It could be, that she’s already here. Y/N is near where she’s most desired. No one knows how much they will need her, but she always knew. Hidden between their friends, Y/N is here to perform an ancient ritual taught to each upcoming generation. She is here for Stiles.
Relationship Stiles Stilinski x Reader
Title It likes its riddles.
Words 2934
A/N Sadly, I wanted to do more actual research before writing this particular part, but since the Wi-Fi was so shit on holiday and I couldn’t update, I just wanted it properly finished so I could update for you guys. Therefore, it won’t be as into detail as I wanted, but it will give you a first idea/peek at Y/N’s history. Happy reading!
There are far more supernatural creatures inhabiting Beacon Hills that I could’ve ever anticipated. Not only did I already encounter a Wendigo family during my short stay, the amount of adolescent werewolves was intriguing to say the least. An alpha. At the age of seventeen. Either I had encountered one of the most feral and malicious werewolves I had yet come across, or his whole family had been slaughtered by hunters. The third option, was something I did not consider. Encountering a true Alpha was something that was in children’s fairytales, a story told so sparse that sometimes we considered it to be a hoax. But what had I not seen in Beacon Hills yet? From what I knew about this place; it was to expect the unexpected. My curiosity was sparked; every fibre of my being ready to find out just what had happened here, whom had set of this reset button and what dire consequences were to follow. It were my task to protect beings far and wide, and I felt that this wasn’t merely my regular take and go. “You are way too quiet for my liking. What’s going on in that head of yours?” Andy seems to voice his concern, but I know more is laced behind it. He had grown up with Malina, after all. I had always wondered why Malina and Andrew were by my side as my eternal companions. My destined companions, I had never met; Instead, Mal and Andy were chosen and assigned to me. Perhaps my parentals had meaning behind it, but it was uncommon to do so. My mother was never one to deviate from the destined path of our burden. I refocus my gaze from the adolescents strolling into their high school to the blonde-haired male beside me. “I need to find a way to that table.” “What table?” Are Malina’s first words that do not hold any grudge toward me for forcing her into this experience. She was opening up to having more trouble to find that one, instead of just coming to town and disappearing before sunrise. “Theirs.” My head nods to Scott and Stiles appearing from the parking lot, and I couldn’t help appreciate the ocean blue colour of Stiles’ jeep. It was a nice drive, and I wondered if I would ever get the chance to drive a vehicle. “I don’t get your fascination with this particular group.” Malina sounds incredulous, but her words were true. There was no clear indication that this particular pack held the one we were here for; Call it a hunch. I knew it at least had to do with them and their pursuits. My head snaps from Malina to her twin brother, the gaze thrown the littlest bit judging. “Didn’t Andy tell you?” What did they talk about whenever they were together in their temporary home? I knew the myth about the sun chasing the moon was at least true in the sense of Mal and Andy not seeing eye to eye, but I would think that when it came to work at least the whole party was up to date with recent discoveries. “Tell me what?” I hear the aggravation rise in Malina’s tone and sigh. I scoot closer to her, our bare arms touching one another as I whisper. “An Alpha. And a banshee. And, I think, human?” Malina’s eyes grow bigger with each supernatural in my list and I smirk as I finish it. I’m even more pleased with myself that after a night of digging through family histories, another incredulous fact arose. “Let’s not forget to mention the fact that the daughter of Chris Argent is also in said pack.” This information was new to both my companions, and I watch the initial shock dissipate as Andy blurs out question after question. “What?” “A huntress with a werewolf?” “She doesn’t know, does she?” It would be amazing if Allison Argent didn’t know that the leader of their little pack was one with incredible powers. Seeing as how the other human – Stiles – was up to date, she couldn’t be left out of the loop. Too much trouble. “If she didn’t know, she would’ve been the first gullible Argent I had ever met.” Andy taps his chin in thought, probably contemplating what I was just last night. As soon as I knew whose granddaughter Allison was, there was no doubt left. “Is she a descendant of Gerard?” And now I'm certain Andy and I are on the same page – Malina trailing behind as I see the gears still turning in her mind. My parentals had a run-in with Gerard Argent a few decades ago; he wasn’t too keen on letting anything supernatural walk this earth. The Argents had broadened their work field – where in the Middle Ages Werewolves were their main priority, they didn’t shy away from a Wendigo or two when the chances arose. Let alone when they came face to face with one of the Elderly. “Mhm. That's what my late night research told me.” Malina has caught up. “Yeah, no. She knows.” I perhaps wondered if we were here to collect any of the Argent descendants – they never felt the same. Perhaps it was Gerard’s time to go; I’d be more than happy to guide him toward his final destiny. “I find it to say the least interesting that she decides to follow another path, considering the one chosen for her is so clear.” *****
I stroll into class fairly late, seeing as how our little gathering in the morning had made me loss track of time completely. The only open seat is in front of Scott, and I slide in without a second glance to him or his best friend. “What – what are you doing?” I recognize Stiles’ voice from behind and my ears perk up, hearing the sniffing of Scott behind me. “There’s this scent, that I can't place. It’s not human.” My eyes widen and I feel myself tense up, fingernails digging into the worn out wood of the school desk I occupy. I hadn’t thought of the fact that I might carry a particular scent with me that would be detectable for the Alpha’s keen sense. “Is it supernatural?” Stiles’ question isn't all that incredulous, but his best friend snorts nonetheless. Yes, if it isn’t human it probably is something supernatural. Or dead. Absentmindedly, I lift the collar of my shirt and take a whiff. Nothing out of the ordinary. “I – I don’t know. I’ve never smelled this before. Its not a werewolf.” I'm glad when I hear the subject being dropped, Stiles focusing his friend’s attention toward a completely different topic. Another nightmare. “They’re signing something to me…” Stiles trails off, and when Scott questions what exactly, I try to sneak a peak through the reflection of the glass window to see Stiles’ movements. My shoulders tense when I watch his finish, the shiver running along my spine predicting the possibility of my worst fear appearing once more. When is a door not a door
I hadn’t realized the lecture flew by, and when the school bell rings obnoxiously loud, I jump in my seat. I sprint behind the two males and almost run into a third of their pack as they all huddle right outside the class room door. The fact that I'm new and unknown aids in me tailing them without being noticed. The conversation continues, the other werewolf and banshee filled in about current predicaments and the pack deciphering its possible meaning. I’ve stopped following them when they sat down, leaning against a wall nearby so I could still follow their conversation. I've grown to realize Lydia Martin, alongside Stiles, were the brains of their pack. Although even together, their minds couldn’t crack the code. I wait for several more moments, trying to figure out what to do. Stepping up to them and showing them I knew about the supernatural meant I had to explain why I knew what I knew without telling anyone what I am. Not only was it forbidden for my kind to show our true colours, I had heard enough tales about family who’ve ignored the rule and ended up getting annihilated themselves. Holding great secrets isn't something a mortal easily copes with. Not stepping up now and keep my investigation in the shadows meant that I had to find another way to infiltrate – and right now, I was hasty to solve the problem before it arose. And so I chose the first option. “Hey, uh - I'm sorry I didn’t mean to eavesdrop but I saw you signing and I overheard you talking –“ I start off, walking up to the supernatural filled table as all their heads snap in my direction. “It means ‘when is a door not a door’. It’s a riddle.” Scott is the first one to smile in my direction, but I do see the wary glance Lydia throws me from the corner of her eye. He scoots over, joining me to their table and I smile gracefully as I sit down in front of Stiles. Scott crosses his arms over his chest, leaning toward me as his grin never falters. “Do you maybe also know the answer to it?” I push my lips into a thin line and utter my first lie against Scott McCall and his friends. “No, sadly I don’t.” I do. But my job is not to interfere. “Maybe you should ask Deaton? I’m sure he knows.” Stiles states as he points toward his best friend, granting me with a tight lipped smile – not meant friendly in any way.
Deaton… That name rang a bell somewhere in the back of my mind. I ignore the foul look Stiles throws in my direction, but instead, wreck my mind for the answer. I see Andrew try and gather my attention from the shade near the school entrance, and I dare to glance as I watch him beckon me over.
Momentarily, my head snaps to the new girl, Kira, joining our table, offering her own insights on the matters at hand. When I hear Andy hiss, I roll my eyes and try to get him off my back until a later time. Afterward, I’d fill them in. But right now, every piece of information I could gather was something useful.
“… It’s basically that you’re being visited by peaceful deities or demons…”
As soon as I hear those words, my shoulders tense and I snap my gaze to the table I’m sat at.
“Uh – what?”
I stumble over the one-worded question, my eyes wide in fear and my fingertips digging into the worn out wooden table. I see some of the pack gaze at me expectantly, as if I were to know what we are discussing, but Andy’s demand for attention temporarily worked.
Kira smiles at me, noticing I wasn’t paying attention and simply repeating herself.
“I said that they’re experiencing Bardo. With everything they’re saying.”
Oh. Oh. Somehow, I believed that my cover were already blown before I had even infiltrated. But, as usual, my heart raced before my mind caught up and caused unnecessary evil.
Although Bardo wasn’t such a good thing to experience either.
Stiles sighs, running his large hand along his face before he drops his forehead against the table.
“I’d rather have the first option then.”
The conversation is interrupted when the school bell chimes once again, indicating the start of the next period to follow. Everyone reluctantly raises to their feet, myself following but trailing behind. I’m sure they didn’t want me to immediately infiltrate whatever they’ve got going on.
It’s when Scott turns around, waiting for me, that I’m actually surprised.
“Hey, you’re in our History class with Yukimura, right?”
A grin breaks out and I suddenly feel shy, mumbling my response all the while nodding my head.
“Mhm.”
His hand lands on my shoulder and he guides me forward, the touch rarely comforting. I could not believe that this boy would be capable of murdering another without any remorse – there had to be another way he became an Alpha.
“Well, come on then. Can’t be late. This year, I want good grades.”
Before I can follow Scott inside the building, I’m yanked off to the side by my elbow, face to face with my dearest companion.
“What did you find out?”
I see Scott just a few steps away and I pull myself out of Andy’s grasp, already walking away from him without granting him any details.
“I’ll tell you later. We have history now.”
*****
As soon as I step foot into the class room, I feel a chill run down my spine. Mr. Yukimura smiles briefly as he motions me to take my seat, Malina keeping a spare seat for me beside her. I smile once more to Scott McCall before taking my place, but I can’t help myself to glance briefly in Stiles’ direction.
“Why are you here?”
“I switched classes. Can’t let my lady do all the work herself now, can I?”
I smile gratefully at my companion, squeezing her arm before the teacher demands our attention. I didn’t know why I deserved them.
“Today I want to talk to you about the Second World War. More importantly,” Mr. Yukimura starts, turning around to scribble something on the board. The squeaking of the chalk against the board makes me groan desperately, gripping my pen until my fingertips turn white.
“… I want to talk to you about the internment camps the government forced the Asian-Americans into.”
Before I can control it, I visibly flinch. I feel the bile rise up in my throat from just the mere memory of it, my whole body tensing to the point I am unable to move. My throat feels dry, and I grow anxious as every little detail slips back into my conscious mind, reminding me of true horror.
“Why did you flinch?”
I feel Malina’s fist come into contact with my upper arm and I shy away, rubbing against the sore spot as I throw her distasted look. I swallow harshly, turning around to see if anyone was tuning in to our conversation before leaning toward her, my voice dropping to a whisper.
“It was my first year. Back when I was still alone…” I sigh, closing my eyes as the memories start to play out like a film beneath my closed eyelids.
“I worked as a nurse in said internment camp…”
I feel my hands start to shake just reminiscing how quickly it escalated.
“It was the first and last time I ran into a monster, something so vile I…”
“Mr. Stilinski, perhaps you’d like to read this fragment of the book?”
The anxiety flows off the male so densely even I can sense it. He’s shaking as he throws a look toward his best friend, shaking his head in hopes to be saved, but Mr. Yukimura still ushers him to the front.
Malina and I cross gazes, my teeth sinking into my cheek as I await the inevitable. If Stiles was truly unable to read, this would not end well.
He walks up to the front, opening the book on the right page and … Nothing happens. He starts to sweat, his tongue darting over his bottom lip excessively as he tries – but it doesn’t help. I watch the male have a panic attack, and I feel my own heartbeat rapidly pounding in my throat as Scott raises from his seat and ushers his best friend out of the room in a split second.
The class room is quiet, Mr. Yukimura staring after the disappeared males before scraping his throat.
“Okay, I have no idea what that was about so perhaps we should continue…”
He gets on with his lesson, but I couldn’t shake it. The inability to read, the fact that Scott couldn’t control his wolf powers… There was something luring around the corner. And I could only hope it wasn’t my own worst nightmare.
“There’s something going on that I don’t understand.”
I lean back in my seat, crossing my arms over my chest as I stare at Stiles’ and Scott’s lone back packs, utensils still splattered along their desks.
“More the reason to find out what the hell is going on here, as soon as possible.”
I did understand the urgency behind this task. But somehow I felt that rushing things wasn’t something that we were supposed to do. Also, whatever it was that needed our aid wasn’t here yet, or at least had not manifested. There was a lingering feeling, but it wasn’t strong enough to immediately point me toward the sole individual we were looking for.
I couldn’t shake the ominous feeling that it all gave me.
“Honestly…”
Malina merely hums, keeping her eyes trained on the board to avoid being caught. I do the same.
“I feel like we’re up against something similar as to what I have experienced back then.”
Just admitting that this was a similar feeling I had been experiencing as to what I felt back then, was something that made my skin crawl. If anything, I would fight a hundred demons if it meant never encountering this one again. In the end, I had condemned him to the Underworld. Or so I thought.
“What was it?”
I turn toward her, her curiosity faltering as she sees my anxious gaze searching hers, disbelief for my behaviour and a tiny hint of fear surfacing instead.
“A fox had created the Nogitsune. And just as what’s happening now, it liked its riddles.”

One Good Try [Coco]
This was just posted yesterday to Ao3, enjoy
Miguel is loosing sleep and gaining anxiety in the wake of his day in the land of the dead, with one question always at the edge of his thoughts:
"What if he didn't make it?"
He had to find out. He had to try
Rating: Gen \ Warnings: None \ Word Count: 2934 (Christ almighty) // Ao3 Link
Miguel had to try something
Two months of sleepless nights. Christmas had come and gone, and New Years Eve was well under way.
And the poor 12 year old was very much not enjoying himself a solid 40 percent of the time. His mind was mostly focused on one, nagging thought
Did he make it in time?
Was his Papa Héctor alive?
Did Mamá Coco - who passed just last month - get to see her Papa?
It ate away at the poor boy in tiny ways. In how peckish he’d been with food. In how he stared for hours at the re-taped photo of the Héctor with Imelda and Coco. How his dreams filled with images of his great-great grandfather fading away like sand into the darkness below the marigold bridge. In his tears that fell on the guitar, almost too afraid to strum it again since he last played for his Mamá Coco on her deathbed.
Two months had been too long. Too much. He had to find out. But how could he?
Its not Día de los Muertos. He can’t get cursed… can he?
He sat in the library at his school one day in late January, mulling over a book titled “The Dead and You: How to Contact Your Ancestors” by Esperanza Migas. He scanned and scanned until he reached a page with the ominous title: “THE DOS AND DON’TS OF THE DEAD”. Seemed as good a place as any to start reading
As he perused the page, one “don't” popped out at him: “DON’T: Deface your families tombs in any way. Might result in a curse”
… Well there was an idea, wasn’t it?
--
One small pint of water-soluble paint and a hasty plan later and here he was, in the Santa Cecilia Graveyard at one in the morning in the middle of February. His flashlight was laid on the cold earth facing the stone, and he worked on opening the paint.
The boy hadn’t slept more than an hour or so at a time in the past 4 days, and he muttered about how it was a miracle he wasn’t seeing double yet. Once opened, he took a deep breath, holding the can over her tombstone
"Lo siento, Mamá Imelda” He muttered, before pouring the thick, purple paint all along the top.
He waited a few moments, letting out a huff in frustration and going to grab the flashlight… and his hand went right through it. He jumped, realizing that it had worked, and immediately started looking around for the marigold bridge, spotting blotches of orange just out of his sight.
He ran, stumbling slightly over his own legs before getting to the bridge, which while not as bright as before, seemed pretty lovely nonetheless. Standing at the beginning of the bridge was a uniformed skeleton, who, upon spotting Miguel, stared blankly at him before speaking
“... Aren’t you the living boy from-”
Miguel just nodded, holding his own arm awkwardly
“...” The guard sighed deeply “Follow me, por favor”
---
Imelda had come to hate the ringing of her telephone. She had never liked the telephone, even when she was alive, and that obnoxious ringing was the reason why. Was it helpful? Yes. Did it make her like the device? No.
She grumbled out of bed and picked it up “Rivera Zápatos”
“Ah, is this Miss Imelda Rivera?” a light, female voice asked
“This is she. Why are you calling me at this hour?” She responded, not even a slight bit of amusement in her tone.
“Ah, well, you see Miss Rivera-” the lady on the other end of the line stumbled slightly, before another voice was heard in the background - a voice that caused Imelda’s eyes to widen in surprise.
“C-can I talk to her?”
There was a shuffling sound, and then a breath
“... Hola Mamá Imelda…” The young boys voice sounded thick with tears and hoarse from sobs, which only made her even more concerned.
“... We’ll be right there”
“W-wait, Mamá I-” She hung up
“Héctor!” She shouted to her bed, where a lump of blankets rolled about slightly “Get up, we have to go to the agency”
“Mmh… Why..?” Héctor sat up, rubbing at his eye sockets
“Jus’ get dressed” She huffed, grabbing her boots from their place bedside. She’d explain on the way.
There was no way she was going to keep Miguel waiting any longer than necessary, not with the way he sounded over the phone.
It left her chilled in a way only a mother can describe
-----
The sheer awkwardness radiating off of the assistant at the Department of Family Reunions left Miguel feeling so much worse now that he’d actually cried a little in front of her. She kept offering tissues, asking him how he was, and telling him that Imelda would be there soon.
And while it would be nice to see her, she wasn’t who he was here to see.
The crying had just come from him explaining why he was here. He’d barely gotten to talking about Héctor when he choked on his words in fear.
He was very close to straight up leaving the office before there was a sudden slamming of a door, followed by a slightly muffled but still recognized voice.
Miguel scrambled to his feet from his chair and watched as the door opened, and Imelda walked in, looking over Miguel briefly
He was dressed in a red sweater - seemed to be his favorite color- and jeans with his Rivera boots. The boy had bags under his eyes that rivaled herself during the early days of Cocos upbringing. The redness in said eyes matched his overall flushed complexion, exhausted and miserable looking.
“Miguel…” Her expression couldn’t help but soften at his appearance. You can’t stay mad at a boy who looks that miserable, even if he did pour paint all over your grave. He must have been looking to get cursed, looking for a reason to come back here, but why-
“Imelda? Imelda is it really him?” Héctor came in a few moments after her, coming from behind and looking past her, freezing up the same as her at his great-great-grandson’s miserable appearance.
Miguel's eyes went wide as saucers when Héctor entered, letting out a strangled gasp.
He looked… better. His clothing was no longer ragged, and he even had shoes. Shoes! His bones looked lighter, whiter, and even his hair didn’t look so dusty. He looked so much better than when Miguel had last seen him.
“P-papa Héctor!!” He shouted, rushing forward and clutching his arms around Héctors ribs, choking out sobs of relief. “Y-you’re okay! You didn't fade away!!” He managed in between strained crying and whimpers.
Héctor didn’t need too long to piece together that he was the reason his grandson was like this, and reacted by hugging the small boy close to his chest
“Heh, yeah, I am” He answered softly. “Still kicking in these old bones” He chuckled
Miguel took a moment to enjoy the hug before continuing.
“... I … I was worried…” he looked at the wall, almost embarrassed now “That I hadn’t made it.. That… you’d…”
“Ay, ay Miguel” Héctor turned Miguel’s head to look up at him with a gentle hand “I'm here, it’s okay”
The boy sniffled “Y-yeah…”
Imelda stepped over, a hand on Miguel's back in as comforting a manner she could “Miguel, are you telling me that you spilled paint on my tombstone-”
“He did what???” Hector looked aghast, right at Miguel “Miguel-”
“It’ll wash away with water!!” Miguel quickly assured, still sniffling a bit “and-and its supposed to rain tonight…”
Imelda sighed deeply, her fingers pinching the bridge of her long-gone nose. “Well… I supposed I cannot stay mad at such ingenuity, canI? It is a RIvera trait” She smiled slight, then turned to the Assistant “You! How long does Miguel have before the curse takes its hold?”
‘Oh! Oh uh-” The skeletal woman flipped through an old file as quickly as she could, before pointing down to a page “It says here that when in the case of defamation of a grave, you have to send him back and he has to clean the grave or he’ll be returned here before sunset the next day”
“Hm….” Imelda pondered “Miguel?”
“Hm?” the boy looked over at her directly, still clinging to Héctor like his life depended on it
“ I am sending you home”
“Ma-”
“But” She interrupted, “After we take you to the Hacienda for a quick visit”
The way Miguel’s face lit up was more than worth that brief blip of his defiance.
After assuring the assistant that they’d get Miguel home in a couple of hours, they promptly left. Imelda’s hand on Miguel’s shoulder, and Héctor holding his hand. Miguel was absolutely beaming, the tears quickly drying as he started telling them about how his baby sister was the best, and how Rosa was teaching herself to play violin, and how they had taken down the statue of De La Cruz in Mariachi Plaza since he’d exposed him as a fraud using Coco’s saved letters and poems. It was a lot for the dead Riveras to take in, but as Miguel recounted how the police had tried to take the guitar back, or how De La Cruz fans had called his assumptions absolute garbage (Miguel mentioned that they’d used harsher language and called him some pretty nasty names) Héctor couldn’t help the swell of absolute pride in his chest cavity
Nor the guilt weighing down on his shoulders.
Just seeing how relieved happy Miguel was just at the sight of him had numerous, worrying questions nag away at his brain
How long had Miguel been trying to cross over?
How many sleepless nights had Miguel spent thinking that he’d failed?
He’d admit that he’d had his own nightmares concerning Miguel. Nightmares where he didn’t make it home that night, where Ernesto's murder attempt had worked, where Miguel went home and was punished and barred from playing music ever again, somehow all because of him. When Coco had crossed over - that sad but joyous day - many of his fears had been alleviated
But Coco had never mentioned anything like this.
When they got to the Rivera Hacienda, most of the family was up, including Coco, who took one look at Miguel and wasted no time in gathering him into a bone crushing hug which he returned eagerly.
The rest of the family said their hellos and gave their hugs (Tia Rostia’s hug seemed especially snug) and She offered to name buñelos for him before he went home - as a treat. To which Miguel excitedly nodded his head. Some family members (like Victoria and Julio) went back to bed, while Oscar and Felipe caught Miguel in a talk about their various shoe ideas and tweaks. Héctor took the minutes where the boy wasn’t clinging to him to lean against the wall near the kitchen, watching him with the paternal affection he’d always had for the boy, even before knowing they were related.
“He’s such a brash niño” Imelda commented, approaching him “Doing this just to see if you were still around”
“After all that happened, I can’t really blame him, Diosa” He reached for her hand and she let him take it, squeezing it with reassurance “He looks so tired…”
“After Rosita finishes the buñelos I am sending him straight home. Talk to him now, Héctor” She asserted gently - squeezing his hand- before going to talk to Rosita.
Héctor briefly shook off his nerves before approaching the group
“Ay, Oscar, Felipe, lemme talk to Miguel, just a moment?”
“Oh, si, si, we- “
“Have to go to bed anyhow! Remember Miguel-”
“To deliver that design idea to Elena for us”
“You go it” He gave them a slightly unsure thumbs up as they left. He looked up at Héctor
“Ah.. whats up, Papa Héctor?” Miguel grinned uneasily
Héctor sat himself down where Oscar and Felipe had been, looking right at Miguel. He didn’t have a very easy expression “Miguel, did you really do all that just to see me?”
“Uh well, yeah…” The boy looked away “I just.. Had to know, y’know? It was killin’ me” he shrugged, an almost-smile hitting his face. Héctor was confused for a moment before letting out a huff
“Thats not funny, M’ijo” he said, though his own slight smile betrayed him, earning a small grin - dimple and all- from his beloved grandson
“Yes it is, you’re smiling” Miguel mused almost haughtily
Héctor couldn’t help but chuckle “Enough enough. Miguel, I need to know that you won’t try to do this again” Miguel's expression after that didn’t surprise him “I mean it, M’ijo! You can’t come back here. Who knows what might happen to you if every time you miss me, or Coco, or anyone you just deface a tombstone, or steal something. It's not safe!”
“B-but-”
“No, no buts” He affirmed, and Miguel’s shoulders slumped “I don’t want to see you here again until you are old, grey, and skeletal yourself, comprende?”
Miguel sighed deeply, looking away from him and crossing his arms. He was so much like Coco - when she was a baby, anyway.
“... Fine, but.. I still wanna find a way to talk to you. Somehow, maybe?”
Just as Héctor was about to gently let him down from that pie in the sky idea, Dante exploded into the kitchen and tackled Miguel right off of the chair he was seated in
And Héctor got an idea.
After buñelos and more chatter, Miguel looked about ready to pass out where he stood, and Imelda grabbed a marigold petal. Miguel hugged those that were still awake, lingering on Coco and outright refusing to let go of Héctor for about 2 minutes before lastly hugging Imelda
“I’m sorry Mama Imelda” He muttered
“Ay, M’ijo es okay” She assured him, gathering him in a hug “Now, let's get you home for a full night's rest, si?”
He nodded
“Miguel, I give you my blessing” The petal glowed “To go home, to clean my tomb” she raised it to him “and to rest well, M’ijo”
He smiled brightly at her, and reached forward, touching the petal and getting swept away in a cascade of sunset orange.
Imedla sighed in relief after he left, rubbing at her eyes “Ay, that boy is going to be the final death of me”
Hector reached for her upper arm gently “Lets go to bed, Diosa. We’ve had an eventful morning, and the shop can afford to open late today” He assured and she simply nodded.
Eventful morning indeed.
----
Miguel arrived in the land of the living in the rain, looking at the tombstone and noting that the paint had already come off from the drenching it was receiving.
He grabbed his still on flashlight, and used it to navigate his way home and sneak in the hacienda.
He tiptoed passed bedrooms and went right into the bathroom, where he started running the shower and bathed- washing out the coldness of the rain and also making up an excuse as to why he was showering at this hour if anyone came by. No one did, and he finished the shower, dried himself off, and went to his room where he shoved his wet clothes deep into his hamper, putting on the pajamas he’d left in his bed.
He looked at the date and time on his calendar and clock, realizing that it was saturday and that school wouldn’t be a concern today. He smiled briefly, feeling more ready for sleep than he had in months, and shut his eyes, dreams of guitars and colors and skeletons already beginning before he even began to softly snore
---
The next few days, there was a notable change in Miguel. He was sleeping better, playing the guitar again, and seemed more like himself than he’d been in months. Elena wasn’t completely sure what caused the change in her grandson, but seeing him looking so much happier, it didn’t really matter.
While getting dinner ready, that damned Xolo dog burst in, barking and yipping and jumping around the hacienda, playing - though not roughly- with the twins and then making his way into the kitchen, where he sat at the entrance as if waiting permission. She turned to shoo him off, when she noticed a piece of rolled up paper tied to his neck. She approached him and he didn’t move as she removed it, and rolled it open. It was addressed to Miguel
Miguel,
I really hope you got this! It's a complete shot in the dark whether or not this can cross over into the land of the living, but if it did i think we’ve fixed the “communication issue”. Excellent!
Let me know how you are doing as soon as you get this, okay? I wish you nothing but the best, Mi Hijo.
Much love, Your Papa Héctor
Elena nearly choked on a breath, staring incredulously at the letter, before letting out a deep sigh, rolling it up, and re-attaching it to Dante.
“Miguel is in Mariachi Plaza, you dumb dog! Now shoo!” she waved her hand, and Dante took off like a bullet- or perhaps a rubber band? That dog’s movements defied logic.
Elena shook her head, chuckling “So he really was telling the truth… I’ll have to have a chat with that little niñito when he gets home” and returned to her carne asada, the smell wafting through the room and into the courtyard. She huffed in accomplishment, glancing out into the courtyard.
Yes, all was very well in the Rivera Hacienda

Characters Jacob Frye/ Henry Greene/ Reader
“(Name), are you listening to me?”
Looking up to see Henry frowning at you again, you turned your attention back to the photos that he had strewn about on his counter.
“Yeah, I’ve got it. Pearl Starrick, Crawford Attaway, Templars, bad guys, death to them all.”
Henry dropped the picture he was holding down with an exasperated sigh, making you smirk as he put his hands on his hips the same way that you had noticed Evie did.
“It’s Pearl Attaway, and Crawford Starrick. This is really important, if you are not going to take it seriously…..”
“I am! Its, well, just alot to take in. You forget that I’m not like you lot, roaming about killing people, looking for some Eden thing.”
His face softened a touch as you turned back and scrutinized the pictures again, placing his hand on top of yours and squeezing your fingers gently.
“You are right, I do keep forgetting. But you also said you were sure you wanted to get involved. Have you changed your mind? Or is there something else that keeps your attention wandering?”
A slight heat crept up your face when he looked at you with a knowing smirk, making you clear your throat and fidget in your seat.
“You’re not in a position to say anything, I’ve seen the way you look at Evie.”
You sniggered when it was his turn to fluster slightly, made even worse when you reached into your pocket and dropped something gently onto the counter.
“Here, she asked me to give you this when she picked up her sword. Thought men were supposed to give women flowers, not the other way around.”
Jumping off your stool when Henry walked over to a cabinet and pulled out a book, you leant over his shoulder when he opened it and carefully placed the dried flower in an empty page, grabbing a pen and writing something very neatly underneath it.
“Wait, you collect flowers? What’s Migonette? Never seen that before.”
“It means, ‘Your qualities surpass your charms’. And yes, I collect flowers. Evie has been helping me fill my book.”
You grinned when he flipped through the pages enthusiastically, having never seen him quite so excited about anything before in the two years that you had known him.
“Awww how sweet. Learn something new about you every day.”
His eyes narrowed as he snapped the book shut and put it back in the cabinet, then grabbed a pile of papers and slid them in front of you.
“I see that Jacob’s brazen disposition is beginning to rub off on you (name). Now lets focus on the matter at hand shall we? There is much to do.”
Pulling up your hood when it started drizzling slightly, you followed Henry down towards the docks, smirking to yourself when you spotted a rather well to do gentleman amongst a small crowd. Veering off to the right, you snuck up behind him and quickly slipped your hand into his right coat pocket. Slyly catching your fingers around the string of his coin bag, you tugged it out and pulled it up your sleeve unnoticed, before jogging back to Henry who faced you with a disappointed look.
“What? A girls gotta eat. So what are we doing around here?”
Now that you were out of sight of the crowd, you dropped the bag from out from your sleeve, frowning as you pocketed the shilling and a few pennies that you had managed to take, before discarding the bag on the floor behind you.
“Merely eves dropping and gathering information. Anything that could help us ruin Templar plans, and the docks are full of people with loose lips.”
“That it? Sounds boring.”
You grimaced when Henry threw you yet another disgruntled look, your attention flickering to a woman who was screaming at a nearby vendor. Raising your eyebrows and gesturing for him to follow you, you paused for a moment when he didn’t move.
“Being an assassin is not all fun and games (name), it requires thought, and planning. You cannot just run off creating havoc. You’ve seen the trouble Jacob gets himself into, leaving others to clean up his mess.”
Sighing and linking your arm through his, you pulled him in the direction of the woman who was now shrieking and flapping about, admitting to yourself that he was probably right.
“I know, I know, it’s just that it is somewhat more exciting that what I’ve been doing for the past few months, so you can’t really blame me for being slightly enthusiastic can you? Now, shall we see what this womans fussing about?”
You poked him in the chest gently when he gave in and flashed you a soft smile, allowing you to drag him over to the vendor so you could hear what was going on properly. Your brow furrowed as you listened to her rant and rage at the man who was selling bottles of what you assumed was tonic, accusing him of making her husband even more sick.
“Look at him! Just look at him! Your syrup is turning him simple headed!”
Nudging Henry in the arm, you pointed towards the sign that the vendor had up on the front of his stall, noticing that it had the name ‘Starrick’ brandished all over it.
“See (name), sometimes just wandering about can prove useful. We should find Jacob or Evie, and let them investigate this matter.”
“Did someone say my name?”
You shrieked when you felt a pair of strong arms wrap around your waist from behind you, grinning when Jacob leaned over your shoulder and kissed your cheek.
“Speak of the devil…”
Feeling your face get hot when Henry stared at you, who was trying to stop the corner of his lips twitching in a smile, you flashed him a wide grin and reached behind your back to run your fingers over Jacobs stomach, making him wriggle and drop his arms from around you. Turning around and brushing your lips against his briefly, you grabbed his shoulders and turned him to face the quarrel that was still going on.
“Perfect timing. We’ve got something here that needs your attention.”
Turning back to Henry to see him sigh and shake his head at the exact same time as you when Jacob grinned wickedly and rubbed his hands together, you stepped back to stay out of the way when he walked over to the now exasperated salesman.
“So…. How long has this been going on for?”
Looking up at Henry out of the corner of your eye to see he was smirking at you, you kept your attention on the vendor to try and distract you from the flutterings that had started in your stomach.
“A bit nosey aren’t you?”
Your eyebrows raised when Jacob smacked a blade out of the mans hand, making him turn on his heel and run away.
“Why do they always run? Come on (name) time for your next adventure.”
Breaking out into a sprint alongside Jacob and following him down to the banks, leaving Henry stood there chuckling and shaking his head, you grimaced when the vendor jumped down the decks and tried to escape by going through the sewers.
“I’ll follow him down, you stay up top and try and cut him off.”
Nodding and weaving around the crates to head in the direction where the tunnels ended, you clambered quickly up the nearby wall and sped across the busy streets, making several people call out as you pushed by them. Reaching the end of the sewers just behind the two men, you snatched up an apple from a nearby cart and hurled it through the air, hitting the man straight in the head and making him stumble to the ground.
Resting your hands on your knees as you tried to catch your breath, you grinned when Jacob dragged the man up from the ground, holding tightly to his shirt collar as he asked him about the medicine.
“Now, tell me where that syrup originates.”
“Im just trying to make a livin! All i know is they make a run every day, between the gasometers and the asylum.”
Jacob pushed the man away and watched him run off for a moment before turning back to you, cupping your chin in his hand and caressing your lips with his thumb.
“Nice throw, Ready for more?”
Grinning and nodding as he dropped his hand and started running again, you trailed closely behind, just managing to keep up as he headed towards the train tracks. Crossing over the rails and climbing down to hide behind a wall, your eyebrows raised in confusion when Jacob stared out into the distance, deep in concentration.
“What are you doing?”
“Ah, that’s a secret. Next bits for you, see that bloke over there getting on the back of that carriage? He’s got some plans that we need, would you grab them for me? Without letting him know of course.”
Staring out to where he was pointing, you stood there dumbfounded for a moment as you could barely see him in the distance, let alone hear him, wondering how on earth he could know that.
“Erm yeah, sure. How….”
He grabbed your arm and pulled you into the street before you could finish your question, dragging a man off a nearby carriage and jumping in the drivers seat, extending his hand to pull you up alongside him. Grabbing hold of the side and bracing yourself as he cracked the reins, you tried to stifle a giggle as he began talking to the mare that was pulling the cart.
“Who’s a good horse. You are.”
He grinned and shrugged his shoulders as he noticed you staring at him, before whipping the reins again so you could catch up to the man who had now stopped at a nearby factory. The carriage had barely stopped when he jumped out, catching you as you lept out straight after, making your way down the side of the factory where several workers were striking.
“There he is, go and do your thing.”
Yelping when he slapped your ass and pushed you forwards towards the crowd, you threw him a cheeky wink before pushing your way into the mob of outraged workers, waiting for the ridiculously large man to make his way over to where you were stood.
You started to become irritated when he never came anywhere close to where you were, so you crept closer, keeping yourself from view as you realised that you stuck out like a sore thumb amongst the labourers.
Finally spotting your chance when everyone started to get more riled up and began shoving each other to get to their boss, you pushed one of the more heavier built men straight into the foreman, allowing you to sneak your hand into his waistcoat from behind him and pull out a sheet of paper without him knowing anything had happened.
Just after you had managed to stuff it in your coat, you froze when you felt a meaty hand grip your arm tightly. Looking up to see the giant man leering down at you, your chest began to pound when you thought you had been caught.
“Ello darlin’ whats a lovely thing like you doin’ around 'ere?”
Looking behind you quickly to see Jacob about to jump out of his hiding spot, you wafted your hand behind your back, hoping that he would take the hint that you were okay. Trying not to grimace when the man licked his lips as his eyes drifted over you, you managed to twist your arm so that he loosened his grip enough so that you could pull yourself free. Wracking your brain to remember a name out of the pictures that Henry had shown you this morning, the corner of your mouth twitched as one came to mind that would help you out of this predicament.
“Sorry love, your not my type. Mister Lynch is however, have you seen him about?”
His face twisted in panic as he took a step back and raised his hands up, fearful of going near you again.
“Victor? No darlin’. Might wanna try the Strand.”
Imitating the tipping of a hat and turning on your heel quickly, you briskly walked back over to where Jacob was hidden behind the wall, pulling out the paper and handing it to him.
“There you go, nothing to it.”
Watching him study the document for a moment then fold it up and tuck it into his coat, you became very aware of your legs that were starting to ache through all this running about, when you followed Jacob in the direction he had suddenly darted off to.
“Now where?”
“The man we want is in charge of a fighting club at the foundry.”
Grateful that he had slowed his pace slightly when he had noticed you getting slightly tired, your brow furrowed when you could only recall one person who you knew did fighting events.
“Wait, it’s not Robert is it??”
“Nope, some other bloke. Though I’m sure Robert will be happy when I take out his competition.”
Skidding to a halt when you finally reached the foundry, you perched yourself on the edge of a nearby stack of pallets as you rubbed the stitch in your side, sticking your tongue out when Jacob chuckled at you.
“You wait here, I’ll find the distribution boss. Keep an eye out for blighters for me?”
Grinning as he brushed your jaw with his knuckles before bounding off into the factory, you glanced about for any signs of red shirts as you massaged your aching calf. Slipping off the pallets and crouching down behind them when you spotted two big brutes heading towards the main gate, you looked around furiously for a way to distract them.
Not finding anything nearby, you decided that the only way to get them to stop guarding the door was to get them to chase you. Taking a deep breath, you made your way around to the side of the factory and crept up behind the blighter on the left, who was deep in conversation with the other, and not so subtlety slipped your hand in his pocket and pulled out a ring of keys. Jumping back and smirking when he turned around to face you, you waggled them in front of him and turned about quickly, running towards the street.
“Oi! Get back here ya little shit!”
Glancing back to see both the men chasing you just as Jacob emerged from the factory, pushing a man in a long black coat to the ground, you threw him a wave and jumped onto the back of a nearby carriage that was speeding by. Throwing the keys into the street when you had got far enough away from your persuers, who had stopped coming after you not long after you had gotten on the cart, you glanced around and breathed a sigh of relief when you noticed that you were travelling roughly in the direction if your shop.
Jumping off when you were only a few streets away from your destination, you lazily walked the rest of the way, panicking when you saw three well dressed people stood right outside your shop. You recognised one of them as the bank managers assistant, but the obviously very rich couple, you had no idea who they were. Keeping your distance until the couple finally left, you hesitantly walked over to the banker, who was now busy putting back on the padlock and chains around the door.
“Mister Allen? Who we’re those people?” you asked quietly, not even sure that he had heard you until he turned to you after clicking the padlock firmly shut.
“(Name)? I’m sorry to tell you dear, but they are very interested in buying your store.”
You lowered your head in dismay as you fought to hold back your tears, mentally kicking yourself for getting so distracted from trying to get enough money to prevent this from happening. Apart from making Evie’s sword, in which she had paid you generously for, you had done nothing else to aid your plight. Looking back up at him with pleading eyes, you hoped to appeal to his softer side, which you found out he had last time you went to the bank, him being the only person even slightly sympathetic to your situation.
“Please, just give me more time. I can get the money, isn’t there anything you can do to put them off?”
“Not really, they’ve been after this place for a while, they want to make it into a bakery. The only thing that was stopping them was the abundance of criminal activity around here, but that seems to have almost stopped for some reason.”
Cursing under your breath when you realised that it was your own fault that the blighters were staying away, the corner of your mouth twitched when you came up with an idea to scare off the potential buyers.
“I see. Thank you for talking to me Mister Allen, hopefully I will see you again soon.”
Standing rooted to the spot as he tipped his hat and left, you ran around to the back door as soon as he was out of sight, banging on it with your fists when you found out it was also locked tight. Making your way back round to the front, you glanced up at the clock to see it was just after four and began running as fast as you could to the pub.
