Diversathon Update #4

DAY 11: Red (Taylor's Version) distracted me for a bit but I'm back with reading updates!

Dial A For Aunties was such a fun book! I laughed out loud multiple times while listening to the audiobook. The narrator did an amazing job with the accents and I'd prefer to listen to the audiobook for the next book in the series as well 👀

I just finished The Spanish Love Deception one second ago and it was swoonworthy! AARON BLACKFORD, need I say more?

I've also started listening to the audiobook for We Hunt the Flame, haven't got much into it but loving the vibes.

Viral Art - “Good” or Just Right

CB Hoyo is one of the most popular digital artists on Instagram. Instead of selecting one art piece, I have chosen to discuss his entire Instagram account, as it acts as an exhibition for his many bodies of works. The rationale behind selecting his work was the profound affect and virality behind his work. As an artist with no formal training, it is fascinating how he has leveraged Instagram as a platform to spark participatory engagement in many different facets. 

CB Hoyo has a plethora of different collections. He began his Instagram account in 2017 with his first body of work titled ‘Fakes.’ When travelling back to Cuba to visit his grandmother, he came across his childhood artwork from the age of five. This inspired him to replicate these pieces from an early age and graffiti famous modern artwork with cynical statements. He has since released repeat ‘Fakes’ collections, along with his most prolific work titled ‘Corny Quotes’ released in 2019 and 2020. 

The work mimicking his five year old self consisted of messy handwriting, bright colours, all designed to please himself through self reflective commentary. Hoyo’s work looks as if it were created by a violent toddler with an unsettling sense of reality, which has struck a chord with millennial and Gen Z. These works are in direct contest to ideas behind the gatekeepers of the traditional art community, an industry where exclusivity and intellectual materialism are highly esteemed. 

Hoyo expresses the fears and thoughts most people have and articulates them in chaotic, yet nostalgic inhibitions.  He leverages communicative capitalism as he uses the power of the Instagram platform to gain an audience Dekalov, V., Kristina, G., & Dina, U, 2017). It has become a popular part of culture to express feelings and inhibitions via quotes on the internet, particularly with the trends in stories. The artist not only expresses his views on basics behind inner thoughts for his satisfaction, but with the sharing phenomenon has managed to gather viewers to elevate his artwork to create traction and thus spark virality. 

The works expand into various participatory systems (Graham, 2010). The ability to efficiently share content is enhanced by the power of internet celebrity. Even if you don’t know Hoyo by name, most likely you’ve seen his work reposted on your feed. Some of the world’s most influential accounts, such as Emily Ratajkowski and Bella Hadid have reshared his artwork, expanding his fanbase through the influencer phenomenon. This underlines the significance placed on digital artists to have a recognisable brand when utilising such platforms. CB Hoyo has done this via the recognisable and consistent use of font throughout his works, which separates him from the many digital artists sharing similar content. Further, the simplicity of the works allow for direct response to current events to generate communicative capitalism. For example, CB Hoyo has created individual works surrounding heavily discussed and shared topics; CoronaVirus and Black Lives Matter. This has further inspired audience engagement and reposting. During the Black Lives matter campaign, the artist asked followers to direct message the translation of ‘Fuck Racism’ in their language to create a piece centred around world unity. The artist could have simply utilised Google Translate to have done so, but decided to leverage his need for knowledge to gain audience participation in the creation. 

Furthermore, the works expand beyond the digital and translate into the physical. The artwork has struck such a cord with particular individuals that it has inspired a trend of tattoos based on CB Hoyo’s quotes. The artist himself receives at least five messages per day requesting permission to use his work or for himself to tattoo them with his art. 

He built on this idea by encouraging participation through offering his tattoo services for free in select major cities. The tattoos have then been posted to individual’s accounts and reshared via the CB Hoyo page, which surprisingly has gained even more traction than the original works. In addition, the artist has released a popular Instagram filter utilising the same signature aesthetics. This directly links to the account which displays all artworks and further builds on the concept of artistic branding through diverse mediums. 

Although the transformative ideas have been widely accepted by the Instagram community, CB Hoyo has received negative responses to his work. These comments revolve around the basis that his digital productions should not be classified as art due to their lack of purpose and innovation (Hemsley, J., & Kelly, R, 2019). This begs to question what criteria is needed to reach virality in the newform of artist distribution. This notion also questions what the new era online audience esteems as purpose and classifies as “good art.” 

It is evident with over half a million followers, CB Hoyo has utilised Instagram as a resource and entry into the art world. However, it is interesting to wonder whether his simplistic childlike artwork would have flourished without digital technologies. With the ability to readily connect with audiences through the replication of intimacy social media platforms allow for, CB Hoyo has created deep connections with viewers (Hope, C., & Ryan, J, 2014). The analysis of younger generations' social media actively allows for insight into the method behind unlocking the new age gatekeepers to create both virality and participatory systems - without the tools of the digital platform, would CB Hoyo even exist.

How does Sybok fit in?

Someone asked me if i know the timeline of Sybok with regards to Michael and Spock, and I did not so I looked a bunch up and did this. I find such joy in putting these together, I have like 6 tabs open on wiki pages for the characters to figure out what happened when.

There’s not much canon info about Sybok, so where there are no hard facts I used the accepted fanon verse timeline.

In 2224 Sybok is born [ref]

In 2226 Michael is born [ref]

In 2230 Spock is born [ref]

There’s no specific date for Michael to join the family yet, but she looks about 9 or so in the Discovery flashbacks so I’m gonna say ballpark 2235

Sybok and Spock apparently have an in depth conversation about emotion a year in to Sybok living with them (Sybok was crying on the anniversary of his mums death), so Spock was at least 5 or so, cos he could speak and think. So I’m saying after 2235 is when Sybok joins the Sarek clan. So Michael was adopted first.  

There’s no clear timeline on when Sybok leaves and commits to his revolution, but he was clearly going to the whole time, he is emotional throughout it. I suspect he didn’t spend much time under Sarek’s roof, perhaps 6 or 7 years. I reckon he left well before the rush to join Starfleet occured.

Essentially, Sarek and Amanda managed to put together the most emotional house on Vulcan in the mid-late 2230s

In 2245 Michael joins the Vulcan Science Academy, finished top of her class in ‘49 and is refused entry to the Vulcan Expeditionary Group

In 2249, Michael joined Starfleet [ref]

In 2249, Spock joined Starfleet  [ref]

By 2254 Spock was assigned to the U.S.S. Enterprise under Pike [ref]

2256 Star Trek Discovery takes place  [ref]

2269–2270 Star Trek TOS takes place [ref]

In 2287 Sybok reemerges and the events of Trek V Final Frontier play out [ref]

So, basically, Spock is with his parents from 2230 - 2249

Michael is there from roughly 2235 - 2249

Sybok is around for some period of time between 2235 - 2245, if I’m reading things right.

So the three of them lived together for some time!
