Okie I get that the existence of a movie such as Gangubai Kathiawadi is v v significant+ important and what not but. It's such a bad movie. The characters are two dimensional and most of the times their motives are not properly explored and a lot of the time it treats them like they've been properly introduced and settled in the ecosystem when they've only been superficially gone over. And why. The fuck. Do people refer to themselves in third person so often. Idk how this happened because I know for a fact that the actors are really really good but I was honestly so disappointed. I'm sorry but that movie is a disaster.

Watched baahubali and rrr because of u [saying the director works like zack snyder a little ] and loved them ! Do you have anymore recs?

Out of the handful of Indian movies I've seen, I don't think any of them are really in the same genre as those two. But I asked my husband and he said you might enjoy Padmaavat (2018), which he liked and is on our list of Indian movies I have to see at some point. (We just don't have quite as much time for watching movies as we used to with the baby now lol.)

I’ve been on an Indian history kick this week (started with me finding out about and then reading Karan Ghelo, which I would recommend if you’re a Victor Hugo fan, not a dissimilar writing style) and I’ve circled back around to Padmaavat which I watched when it initially came out amidst all the controversy, which turned out to be pointless because the movie absolutely did glorify jauhar. I’ve also been reading Lindsay Harlan’s book Religion and Rajput Women, and I think that everyone who says that jauhar has nothing to do with sati and is solely about women taking the only option to escape rape and slavery is being a little bit dishonest. Like, women killing themselves to escape rape and sexual slavery is absolutely in play here, do not get me wrong, but when jauhar is talked about, the concept of honour is always brought up. They did it to protect their honour, to make sure that not even their bodies can be defiled in death. A woman’s chastity being violated in literally in the case of jauhar, worse than death. And the fact that it is committed alongside the rajput men committing to dying in battle…. Like…. They are connected. Idk. It’s been interesting reading about how sati is interpreted by modern Rajput women, as the ultimate commitment to wifely duties. For these women, the ultimate duty of a wife is to protect her husband, and if her husband dies before her, she has failed and the best way to make up for that failure is to die with him. It also ensures that her chastity will forever be inviolate, with remarriage not ever risk. I just think that…. Idk… denying the connection between ideals of women’s honour being connected to sexual purity and jauhar is kinda facetious.
