Today (30 Jan) is the 50th Anniversary of the Bloody Sunday massacre in Derry, Northern Ireland; when British soldiers shot 26 unarmed civilians in a protest against the internment without trial of Irish Republican prisoners. Victims were shot while fleeing from soldiers and assisting the wounded. Other protestors sustained injuries from shrapnel, rubber bullets, and police batons; two were run down by Army vehicles. No British soldier has ever been charged for their involvement in the massacre. In 2019, the prosecution of the only soldier to face legal action over the massacre was halted.

The 14 victims who lost their lives were Patrick 'Paddy' Doherty (31), Gerald Donaghey (17), John 'Jackie' Duddy (17), Hugh Gilmour (17), Michael Kelly (17), Michael McDaid (20), Kevin McElhinney (17), Bernard 'Barney' McGuigan (41), Gerald McKinney (35), William 'Willie' McKinney (26), William Nash (19), James 'Jim' Wray (22), John Young (17), and John Johnston (59).

today marks the 50th anniversary of bloody sunday which took place in derry on 30th january 1972. british soliders in the parachute regiment massacred marchers from the northern ireland civil rights association. 14 people were killed, and at least a further 15 injured. many were shot while fleeing from the soliders, and others while tending to injured civilians.

the massacre was pivotal in increasing tensions in the region during the troubles. the whole incident has been heavily whitewashed for the last half a century. an 'apology' to the victims was only given in 2010, and only one soldier has been charged with murder.

all marchers were found to be unarmed and posed no threat to the soldiers, nor civilians. though the 1998 inquiry into bloody sunday found the killings "unjustified", all investigation into the soldiers responsible have been dropped due to "insufficient evidence". these people have never truly received justice.

So I saw in one of your post about Fitzgerald about “the Saint Patrick’s day in valley forge” o was wondering what you were referring to?

The story may potentially be apocryphal, but basically what happened is that on March 17th, 1778 AKA St. Patrick’s Day, a unit of (some sources say) Germans decided they would make fun of the Irish and St. Patrick by constructing a very offensive, stuffed “Paddy” and mounting it on a pole. It was basically like a scarecrow. This, understandably, pissed off the Irish. They mistook the perpetrators as being a New England regiment and confronted them. A riot subsequently broke out. The officers in charge of every party involved were unable to distill the chaos and the Irish and the New England troops fought each other with fists and clubs and whatever else they had to beat each other with. One source states that the Officer of the Day, which would have been either Colonel Thomas Clark or Major Jonathan Johnston since they were both appointed Field officer of the Day for that day [x], made haste to headquarters to inform Washington of what was going on. He promptly set out to deal with it himself. 

Washington rode into the chaos and tried to reason with the troops. He was able to piece together that the New Englanders were not the ones at fault, but his first attempt to restore order in a calm fashion failed. So, instead of trying to reason with them, he yelled at them to calm t.f. down and promised to punish whoever was responsible for the insult if anyone could tell him who actually did it. No one was able to come up with an answer. Washington is then said to have stated “I, too, am a lover of St. Patrick’s Day” and resolved to have the army observe the holiday. He ordered an extra ration of alcohol to be provided to all the troops. If the story is true, then it would have been the beginning of the, I’m pretty sure, annual celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day by the Continental Army, the most notable of which happened at Morristown in 1779. Earth Afire

Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston’s Earth Afire picks up right where Earth Unaware left off—Victor Delgado has arrived on Luna and delivered the message of an impending alien invasion, but no one is taking him seriously. Earth is not preparing for an invasion as he had hoped. Instead, Earth’s major powers are wasting time. Frustrated, Victor tries to find a way to get humanity to listen to him. Meanwhile, both Lieutenant Mazer Rackham, (a member of New Zealand’s army), and Captain Wit O’Toole, the leader of the Mobile Operations Police, (or MOPS), begin to prepare for their next big operation. When the Formics land in China and begin to lay waste to both the country and its people, both Rackham and O’Toole and their teams travel through China and begin to fight back. Eventually, Victor Delgado devises his own plan to destroy the Formic’s “Mothership” and springs into action with the help of an unlikely backer—Lem Jukes.

I really enjoyed Earth Afire. I appreciated the novel for several different reasons. First, it was incredibly fast-paced—there was always something going on. Second, the novel was extremely well-written and detailed—I knew precisely what was going on at all times and maintained a deep understanding of the tactics that the humans employed in their attempts to rid their world of the Formics. Third, the novel includes several relatable characters. A prime example would be Victor Delgado who consistently fights for what he believes in and refuses to back down even in the face of opposition. He can also be a bit rash and hot-tempered.

With that being said, there were a few things, which I did not appreciate about Card and Johnston’s novel Earth Afire. First, since the novel was told from several different perspectives, I did not feel as though I had a good grasp on each character and their personality, their hopes, interests, and motivations. A prime example would be Captain Wit O’Toole. As far as I’m concerned, he is a soldier driven by duty. He is also a gifted tactician, but that’s all I know about him; he still lacks depth. I also didn’t like some of the new characters that Card and Johnston introduced in this novel. Bingwen is probably my least favorite character because he is unrealistic. This characterization stems from the fact that Bingwen is an eight-year old child who is good at everything. He’s a highly intelligent, fast-learner who seems to know everything. I don’t mind intelligent characters, but Bingwen’s intelligence comes out of left field. This is due to the fact that he grew up in rural China where the educational system leaves a lot to be desired. He grew up surrounded by rice paddies and a plethora of individuals who know little more than what they need to survive, (e.g. information pertaining to the maintenance of rice paddies). His access to literature, computers, the internet, and other forms of technology is extremely limited—Bingwen and his friends often complain about it at the beginning of the novel. Despite all of these factors counting against him, Bingwen is extremely intelligent. His level of intelligence doesn’t make any sense—how could someone without access to a good education and limited access to computers and other forms of technology know as much as he does about the world? It’s… unnatural for a lack of a better word. Third, I felt as though Earth Afire incorporated major plot points from other novels, reducing its originality. An example would be the mist that the Formics sprayed on China’s landscape, killing its vegetation, choking its people, and murdering its livestock. The mist the Formics employed in their invasion reminded me of the “black smoke” the aliens in H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds used when they invaded England. Finally, the novel was both dark and depressing—thousands of people die in extremely gruesome ways, (e.g. they are incinerated by lasers).

“The First Annual Television Academy Hall of Fame Awards”

This award's mission is to recognize "persons who have made outstanding contributions in the arts, sciences or management of television, based upon either cumulative contributions and achievements or a singular contribution or achievement."

The honorees received glass statuettes in the form of two ballet dancers created by sculptor and painter Pascal called “Discipline of Creation.” The trophies were tall and difficult to handle so they were not presented during the course of the ceremony itself. 

With that in mind, since 1988, inductees have received a crystal television screen atop a cast-bronze base designed by art director Romain Johnston.

Being the first such telecast, the rating were poor. The special lost not only its time slot but the entire evening with just a 16 share and a 10 rating. ABC's TV remake of A Streetcar Named Desire won the night with a 39 share and a 23.1 rating.  

Just as Carol Burnett introduces Lucille Ball in this first ceremony, in 1985 the roles were reversed when Lucy introduced Burnett for the honor. 

Of the other participants in this initial outing, Steve Allen was honored in 1986, Eric Sevareid in 1987, Barbara Walters in 1989, Jean Stapleton in 2002, Bea Arthur in 2008, and Sherman Hemsley in 2012.

Although Lucie Arnaz is announced in the opening credits, she did not appear in the telecast due to a prior obligation.

Although the ceremony was broadcast on ABC TV, there was no attempt to lessen mentions of CBS and its programming.

The segment begins with a clip of “Lucy Goes To the Hospital” (ILL S2;E16) which starts with Lucy announcing: “Ricky. This is it!” 

After the clip, Desi Arnaz Jr. enters and explains how his birth coincided with the birth of Little Ricky. Desi says that his sister Lucie couldn't attend because she is appearing on stage back East in The Guardsman. The show was produced at New Jersey's Paper Mill Playhouse also starring Lucie's husband Laurence Luckinbill. It was hoped that the show would transfer to Broadway, but this did not happen. 

Desi Jr. introduces Carol Burnett. 

A cut-away to Lucille Ball in the audience reveals that she is holding back tears at her son's tribute. Gary Morton sits beside her. Carol tells of how Lucy came to the second night of Once Upon A Mattress on Broadway.  

A video tribute tracks Lucy's childhood in Jamestown to her unlikely breakthrough television series “I Love Lucy.” Clips are from “The Audition” (Lucy as The Professor), “Lucy Does a Television Commercial” (“It's so tasty, too!”), “Hollywood at Last!” (at the Brown Derby), and “Job Switching” (“Speed it up!”). 

Lucy: “We all know we never do anything alone.”

Lucille Ball gets a standing ovation both walking to the podium and then again back to her seat. Cuts to the audience, show stars like Ann Jillian dabbing their eyes at Lucy's tearful acceptance speech.

Lucy Connection: Lucy and Carol Burnett were each others biggest fans. They alternately appeared on each others television shows, as well as numerous specials and awards shows.

Paddy Chayevsky (posthumous), hosted by Bob Fosse

A video interview with Chayevsky talks about his producing television dramas like “Marty”.

Eddie Albert and Peter Falk pay tribute to Chayevsky by acting out moments from his most notable work including Marty, The Tenth Man, and Network.

Susie Chayevsky could not be there to accept the award for her husband, so Fosse reads a message from her.

Chairman of the Academy John H. Mitchell takes the stage to talk about the Hall of Fame.

Lucy Connection: The following year Fosse and Ball were both part of “Night of 100 Stars II.”

In a pre-taped segment, Jean Stapleton talks about the craft of acting which leads to a montage of scenes from “All in the Family” starring Carroll O'Connor, Rob Reiner, Sally Struthers, and Stapleton.

Bea Arthur talks about Norman Lear and quotes Paddy Chayevsky talking about Lear. Arthur starred in “Maude” a spin-off of “All in the Family.”  

A video segment traces Lear's personal and career history. It includes clips from “Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman,” “All in the Family,” “Fernwood Tonight,” “One Day at a Time,” “Maude,” “Good Times,” and “The Jeffersons.”

Lucy Connection: Bea Arthur played Vera opposite Lucille Ball in the feature film Mame (1974). The two went on to appear together on “CBS On The Air” in 1978.

Lucie Arnaz and Desi Arnaz Jr. were misty-eyed as they accepted the honor for their father. The brother and sister recounted how their own childhoods were reflected on their parent's show when the "Little Ricky" character was introduced.

Vintage footage of "I Love Lucy", including snippets from the pilot, and other moments from the careers of the honorees were shown at the ceremony held at the Regent Beverly Wilshire Hotel.

"I Love Lucy" producer Jess Oppenheimer's widow Estelle and original writers Madelyn Pugh-Davis and Bob Carroll Jr. accepted the award for the CBS show. It was the first show ever inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In 1994, Disney's Hollywood Studios in Orlando, featured an outdoor exhibition of statues and plaques dedicated to Hall of Fame winners. The exhibit was removed in 2016 and the statues and busts returned to the Academy.
