Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugas fight: Five biggest storylines to watch ahead of the PPV showdown
At the age of 42 and following a two-year layoff, eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao returns to the ring on Saturday in a PBC on FOX pay-per-view bout against WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas.
Pacquiao vs Ugas Live Boxing Stream
Pacquiao will be once again fighting for the 147-pound title he won in his last outing, an impressive decision win over then-unbeaten Keith Thurman. But this weekend's showcase from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas won't be against the original opponent, unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr., who withdrew last week due to a torn retina.
Manny Pacquiao vs Yordenis Ugas fight
Let's take a closer look at the biggest storylines entering the Filipino icon's much-anticipated return.
1. How is it possible Pacquiao is still doing it at this level?
Pacquiao certainly won't be the first legendary fighter past the age of 40 to come back for yet another big fight. But when you consider Pacquiao is the betting favorite against an active champion despite his long layoff, and you consider how much the "PacMan" still relies upon speed and explosion as a boxer, what he is doing at 42 is simply remarkable. To put things into perspective, rising welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr., who won his biggest step-up fight to date last Saturday by knocking out Egidjius "Mean Machine" Kavaliauskas before calling out Pacquiao afterwards, was still three years away from being born when Pacquiao made his pro debut in 1995. Yet here we are, 26 years and many in-ring miles later after Pacquiao has consistently matched himself against the most dangerous foes available, he's still at it. Even Pacquiao's contemporaries like Floyd Mayweather, if they are still active at all, are largely returning for circus fights against MMA fighters and social media influencers. History offers very little for comparison sake to what Pacquiao continues to do, which is what made his initial intention of fighting the pound-for-pound ranked Spence all the more impressive.
2. Ugas is a downgrade from Spence, but not by much
Certainly, everything from the betting odds to the commercial expectations for Saturday's PPV fight shifted dramatically once Spence's name was removed from the marquee. Ugas (26-4, 12 KOs), who is more technician than destroyer compared to Spence (who is both), is also less likely a threat to send Pacquiao disastrously into retirement via knockout. Yet Pacquiao-Ugas is still an incredibly intriguing fight, particularly for hard-core fans of the game who have watched Ugas, a 35-year-old former Cuban amateur star, quietly transition from journeyman to contender, and now champion. Large for the weight class, Ugas will hold height and reach advantages against Pacquiao and is an incredibly disciplined counterpuncher with good defense and the ability to walk forward when he senses an advantage. While Ugas' experience against elite fighters isn't anywhere near that of Pacquiao (or even Spence, for that matter), he holds a handful of strong wins against Jamal James, Thomas Dulorme, Omar Figueroa Jr. and Abel Ramos. His best performance, however, likely came in a disputed loss when he was robbed of what should've been scored a 12th-round knockdown against Shawn Porter in 2019, which played a key role in his split-decision defeat. Although adapting to Pacquiao's speed and awkward angles is never easy, Ugas has the technical savvy to make key adjustments that could give Pacquiao fits. The Porter fight alone showed why Ugas should be considered just outside of the elite 147-pound core of Spence, Terence Crawford, Porter and Pacquiao.

3. Will the two-year layoff be a negative or a positive for this version of Pacquiao?
Yes, it's hard to look on the surface at Pacquiao taking off as much time off as he has during the pandemic as anything that can be called a positive, particularly at his age. Timing is everything inside the ring and one of the only ways a fighter can properly maintain that is by staying active. Looking back, activity has to be considered a key part of Pacquiao's most recent comeback when, in 2018, he emerged from a one-year layoff following a disputed loss to Jeff Horn by fighting three times over the next 12 months and riling off age-defying victories against Lucas Matthysse, Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman. Regardless of if he were facing Spence or Ugas, taking this much time off has the potential for Pacquiao to come out flat. But if there's a silver lining to the hiatus, it's that Pacquiao wasn't taking any damage and was able to heal up any nagging injuries. One thing that has allowed Pacquiao to maintain such incredible longevity has been his passion for training and the intensity in which he works out, even between fights. While this is by no means a preferred scenario to come back to the PPV level without a tuneup, there doesn't appear to be a lack of motivation in terms of the preparation, even with the late opponent change. Not only was the danger that Spence brought to the table reason enough for Pacquiao to leave no stones unturned in training, the fact that he's threatening a run for president of the Philippines in 2021 means doing so fresh off of a resounding win is a much more strategic scenario. Simply put: don't expect Pacquiao to be anything less than the best he can still be at this age.
4. Win or lose, this could be the final time we see Pacquiao in a big fight
Given his age, Pacquiao appears one bad loss away from retiring for good at any point, which he more or less agreed with during a recent interview with "Morning Kombat," where he remained focused on a wait-and-see philosophy regarding his future. Given his political aspirations, it's just as easy to imagine Pacquiao not having the time to train and compete should he fulfill his goal of becoming president of his native country. Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach shared a different opinion, recently stating he believes one of Pacquiao's remaining goals to be accepting and winning a fight as a sitting president. But Pacquiao stayed noncommittal. Either way, we are a whole heck of a lot closer to the end than the beginning of Pacquiao's incredible boxing journey, which makes this week that much more worth celebrating that he's still at it making big fights on the sport's grandest of stages, even though he and Mayweather have long handed off the baton to Canelo Alvarez as the biggest face of boxing's current era.
5. There's no shortage of huge fights remaining if Pacquiao still wants them
Spence's eye injury, just two years removed from miraculously surviving a dangerous car accident, certainly creates some questions regarding his future. Given Pacquiao's equal level of uncertainty due to age, the biggest lament of seeing Pacquiao-Spence fall apart this weekend is the fear that the window for this action-packed fight may have closed right before our eyes. But boxing fans have learned time and again to never say never and if Pacquiao can prove against Ugas that he's still got it and desires to keep making the biggest fights available, his options will be overflowing. Being the rare network and promotional free agent helps Pacquiao huge in this case. Not only would welterweight fights against Spence, Crawford, Porter, Ortiz, Danny Garcia, Mikey Garcia or a rematch with Thurman be huge, there's a new crop in waiting of young fighters in and around 135 pounds who appear poised to take over the sport in the coming years. Imagining Pacquiao welcoming the likes of Gervonta Davis, Teofimo Lopez Jr., Ryan Garcia or Devin Haney for a dramatic move up two divisions to challenge him is a mouth-watering proposition for fans.

Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner: Filipino Boxer Enters Next Phase Of Training
The Manny Pacquiao and Adrien Broner are both preparing for their fight. The Filipino boxing symbol has now moved to the following period of his preparation as he gets ready for his up and coming session with Broner in January. Pacquiao has begun the competing period of his preparation, working with George Kambosos of Australia.
Pacquiao began preparing a few days prior with the Australian who was the Filipino's previous fight mate. The 39-year-old boxer is planned to leave by the third seven day stretch of December before going to the United States for the last phases of his development.
Pacquiao has augmented his corner with a great deal of remarkable figures, especially Hall of Fame mentor Freddie Roach. The 58-year-old is certain of Pacquiao's odds, in spite of the fact that he clarified that it won't be him yet Buboy Fernandez making major decisions once the Filipino pug enters the ring, Philboxing announced.
To review, Pacquiao and Roach had a dropping out a year ago when the previous lost to Jeff Horn of Australia. Fernandez has since assumed control and has been credited with the Pac-Man's resurgence. This incorporates Pacquiao's last win over Lucas Matthysse that additionally gave the Filipino the WBA welterweight belt – a similar one he will protect against Broner.
And keeping in mind that Manny Pacquiao vs Adrien Broner live stream has been riddling himself with Broner-clone sparmates, most stay inspired by how things will stream over at his camp. Its a dependable fact that Roach's entrance to the group was met with analysis – especially by Fernandez and molding mentor Justin Fortune. The boxing symbol made it open that he would address the circumstance and said that there is no reason to worry, Manila Bulletin Sports said.
Up until now, everything appears to be calm over at the Pacquiao camp – indicating that the distinctions may have at last been fixed up. Fernandez, Fortune, and Roach have their individual assignments, something that was likely resolved by Pacquiao when the errors of the last's entrance came into the image.
Bug prefers Pacquiao's odds, trusting that the Filipino will turn out successful in a meeting with ABS-CBN. "Manny will slaughter Broner," he said. "You can wager your home on it. Broner endeavors to fight like (Floyd) Mayweather however he's not even close to the ability level. He even uses the shoulder-roll."
The Pacquiao vs Broner fight is set for Jan. 19, 2019 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with Pacquiao a chances on-pick top pick. Per their November positioning, Paddy Power and Betfair both picked Pacquiao to win 4/9 with Broner a 7/4 longshot. Chances of a draw is 20/1, as indicated by Philboxing.

Live results and round-by-round coverage of Pacquiao vs. Thurman
We have a live blog for Saturday’s pay-per-view, featuring Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman
Luis Nery def. Juan Carlos Payano via KO (body shot) in Round 9
Round 9: Left over the top from Nery pushes Payano back. It looks like Payano is slowing down a bit. Nery with the short uppercut, Payano with two short uppercuts of his own, and DOWN goes Payano! A huge, heavy body shot from Nery sends Payano to his knees, and he can’t respond to the count from the ref. It was a liver punch, too. Wow!
Round 8: Payano comes forward and shoves Nery to the ropes, landing a hard shot to the body on the way, but Nery slips the short flurry that followed. Payano avoids the over-the-top hook from Nery, but a massive straight left from Nery stuns Payano, right on the button. Payano recovers, but eats a right uppercut from Nery. Payano sets and throws several big hooks out there, but Nery avoids big danger. Payano landed more shots, but Nery landed the much, much harder ones.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Nery, 76-76.
Round 7: Nery connects with a good left as Payano came in to start the round. Payano comes forward again, but Nery finally finds his accuracy. He slams a right hook right into the chin of Payano, who staggers and backs himself up, clearly rocked. Nery lands another shot, a big right hook, and Payano shoves Nery into the ropes out of frustration. Nery seems to have found his range. Big left jab from Nery, and a right uppercut. He gets Payano against the ropes and rips a huge hook to the body when Payano circles away.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Nery, 67-66 Payano.
Round 6: Payano is again controlling the action, coming in with big pressure, big left hooks that Nery is mostly avoiding, but he’s unable to set anything up himself. Nery is looking for the big power shot, but Payano is staying out of danger. Big right hand over the top from Payano lands, and it was probably the best shot of the fight.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Payano, 58-56 Payano.
Round 5: They get into a wild slugfest early in the fifth, both swinging big hooks, but neither really landing anything hard. Both almost have their heads knocked off, but miraculously, both are unscathed from the exchange. Counter right from Payano lands. Nery is still having some trouble tracking Payano, who is moving well, but whenever the gap is closed, Nery lands some good shots. Right straight from Payano lands, and a hard hook to the head from Nery after the clinch. Messy, messy exchanges in this round, so much so that it’s really hard to pick a winner.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Payano, 48-47 Payano.
Round 4: Nery throws a big flurry to start, connecting on three straight hooks to the body that did some damage. Now he’s got Payano backing up, chasing him around the ring. Payano changes levels and tries to throw in a massive hook, but Nery slips it. Short jab from Payano lands. Counter overhand right from Payano also lands. Payano takes a spill, but it’s not a knockdown. They resume and Nery flies forward with a winging left power punch, but Payano ducks it.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Nery, 38-38.
Round 3: Nery switches up his stance, and paws his right hand out there. He lands left hook near the back of the head of Payano, who was turning away from him. Thurman gets Payano into his range, and he throws several short hooks low, all good shots as Payano ha to briefly turtle up. Nery gets Payano in the corner and tees off, jut missing with a major overhand. Counter left from Payano lands, and the round comes to an end. This is a hard one to score, as Payano still effectively controlled the action and had some good shots, but Nery definitely landed some of the harder blows of the bout.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Nery, 29-28 Payano.
Round 2: Nery comes out a bit more active, winging a right hook, but they tie up and are separated. Hard straight right form Payano lands, but he eats a counter left from Nery. They clinch up, and Payano throws a flurry of punches, but Nery circles away. Body shot from Payano misses. Payano is staying very active and Nery isn’t doing much but follow him around the ring. Payano is keeping Nery off balance. They tie up, and Nery chooses his moment to explode, landing a hook to the body and just missing with two hooks at range. Better round from Nery, but he needs to pick it up.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Payano, 20-18.
Round 1: Payano takes the center first, ad he’s pawing his lead hand out there, gauging the range. Payano takes some wild swings, a big left hand landing at the end, but Nery walks through it. Payano gets Nery up against the ropes, and there may have been a clash of heads. Outside right hook slips through Nery’s guard and lands on the chin. Nery avoids the follow-up one-two from Payano. The round comes to an end without much action, especially from Nery.
SB Nation scores the round 10-9 for Payano.
We’re here for our live coverage of the pay-per-view boxing card on Saturday, featuring a main event between Manny Pacquiao and Keith Thurman for the WBA (super) welterweight title. We’ll have round-by-round coverage of the three main card bouts, including scoring. The current round and bout will live at the top of this article, while previous rounds and bouts will be listed below.
Pacquiao vs. Thurman results
Manny Pacquiao vs. Keith Thurman Yordenis Ugás vs Omar Figueroa Jr. Sergey Lipinets vs. John Molina Jr. Luis Nery def. Juan Carlos Payano via KO (body shot) in Round 9 Caleb Plant def Mike Lee via TKO in Round 3 Efe Ajagba def. Ali Eren Demirezen via unanimous decision Abel Ramos def. immy Williams via TKO in ROund 4 Genisis Libranza def. Carlos Maldonado via TKO in Round 4 John Leo Dato def. Juan Antonio Lopez via KO in Round 5
In his last bout, Manny Pacquiao showed the boxing world that, while maybe not at his peak, he can still absolutely destroy opponents. His hand speed hasn’t dropped nearly as much as many assumed, but his next bout, against Keith Thurman, will be one of the greatest challenges of his illustrious career.
There’s a difference between this and his previous few bouts. He impressed us when he knocked out Lucas Matthysse, and he handled Adrian Broner without issue. Many believed he won against Jeff Horn. But none of those guys were absolute top contenders with ridiculous knockout potential. This is possibly the most dangerous bout Pacquiao could have taken in 2019.
Pacquiao, 40, has a 61-7-2 record as a professional, with wins in his last two bouts. He has 39 wins via knockout and 22 by decision. He’s an eight-division world champion who currently holds the WBA (Regular) welterweight strap. He’s trying to take Thurman’s WBA (Super) welterweight title, but if he beats him, he’ll be the first.
Thurman, 30, is 29-0 with 22 victories via knockout. His résumé includes wins over Josessito López, Danny Garcia, Shawn Porter, Robert Guerrero and plenty of others. He’s beaten nobody of Pacquiao’s caliber, but then again, Pacquiao isn’t exactly in his prime.
He’ll still be tough to beat, especially if Thurman continues to show signs of rust after an extended layoff between his previous two bouts. He won a majority decision over López his last time out, and was rocked once in the seventh round. If he gets sloppy against Pacquiao, he’ll find himself rocked, and then some.
And that’s why this fight is such a good one — it’s hard to predict. It should be easy to see any number of victories for both fighters, and you could say that both are taking a risk by accepting the fight to begin with.
The three-fight pay-per-view card will be introduced by a three-fight preliminary card on FOX, beginning at 7 p.m. ET. The highlight of that card is an IBF Super-middleweight title bout between Caleb Plant and Mike Lee. The pay-per-view main card begins at 9 p.m. and also features two other welterweight contests.
The opener will pit Sergey Lipinets against John Molina Jr. Lipinets is 15-1 with 11 knockouts. His lone loss came to Mikey Garcia, though he wasn’t that far out of that bout. His most recent win was over Lamont Peterson, where he looked much better than he did against Garcia and Erick Bone. Molina is 30-8 with 24 knockouts, perfectly capable of beating somebody like Lipinets, but who Lipinets needs to beat to stay in contention.
The co-feature will pit Yordenis Ugás against Omar Figueroa Jr. Ugás is 23-4 with 11 knockouts, while Figueroa remains unbeaten at 28-0-1 with 19 knockouts. Ugás is one of the more interesting journeyman boxers out there, as he was initially a hyped prospect who suffered a big loss to Johnny Garcia in 2012, but then went on to be an effective gatekeeper who actually kept the gates — ending the unbeaten streaks of Jamal James and Bryant Perrella.
Now Figueroa is in his sightlines. Figueroa is another fighter who tends to exceed expectations, all the while being someone who has struggled with his conditioning and weight over the years. Either way, it’s an interesting stylistic matchup and is more interesting than even the main event on paper.
Below is all you need to know to watch on Saturday. We’ll have live coverage.
