Calum Hood x Famous!Reader Summary: Requested! After 4 years of agreed no contact, one phone call and song takes back all that you've worked for. Warnings: Mild Cursing, Slight of Explicit Content. Word Count: 1k (not rlly proofread lol) Copyright © 2023 Valentiyne. All rights reserved. This original work is not allowed to be reposted on any platform in any format.

"So, Y/n tell us more about Calum Hood"
A name I hadn't heard in exactly 4 years to the very date.
48 months, 1461 days, and 35040 excruciating long fucking hours.
My face immediately lights up at the name nevertheless, brushing my hair behind my ear nervously,
"Hood? I'm not quite sure what this has to do with my upcoming EP coming out at midnight", I breathlessly laugh out, my eyes locking with the interviewer in front of me. My new work titled, "Bittersweet" was launching at midnight, only containing 4 songs to go along with the 4 bittersweet years I've spent away from him. It was hopeless of me to write about him, but he was the only source of inspiration I could find.
"Well you two had a bit of chemistry as far as we know, is that right?"
Sure we did. We spent over 6 years together on and off, but always came back to each other. He was my rock, my everything, but ultimately we knew it wasn't going to work out.
"Sure we did, I mean it was nothing but a mere innocent crush", I cross my legs now, my shaky hands clasped on top of my knees. The crowd was silent as excited fans packed into the small room to hear the soft launch before midnight.
"Well it was surely more than innocent", she motions to the screen next to us. "This picture was taken four years ago in Bali during the second leg of their tour", I mentally roll my eyes but smile anyway. A few people from the crowd squealed as the iconic picture of us in cuddled up on the beach was displayed, the same one he posted himself as an excuse to have me on his page.
"Like I said- It was a small crush" I was trying to convince myself more than everyone else.
I watch as the slideshow continues on, the screen filled with every single moment in time that Calum and I were spotted together across the world. A few innocent ones of us walking next to each other, to one taken on the balcony of a hotel. We were just kids who didn't know what they were doing- lost in the moment together. He will always have a place in my heart. When things ultimately ended, we both agreed to never speak again- it was only weighing each other down.
"Well I thank you for your time, I hope everyone enjoys the album and finds some comfort in the chaos", I stand up abruptly, extending my hand to shake the interviewer's hand. The crowd cheered quietly as I walked off the stage with a slight wave. I needed to get out of here, I felt like a complete idiot working myself up over someone that I no longer talked to.
I slipped past the stage crew as I shuffled out past the backdoors and towards the parking lot, my fingers fumbling with my keys as I tore my driver's door open and plopped down dramatically. The door shut behind me and I sighed to myself loudly,
That was fucking ridiculous, they didn't even ask anything about me. Just about someone I never wanted to mention. Of course, I could talk about him until the end of time, but it wasn't my place to do so anymore. He was playing sold-out shows every other day and had no worry about a girl back home who happened to have matching tattoos with him, right? The tattoo we shared was of a small flower underneath our ribs, the same flower he gave me on our one-year "situationshipversary" as he called it. It was a silly gesture that I treasured, the California wildflower that he pulled over on the side of the Pacific Coast Highway to pick during peak traffic on the way to my house. It now lay inside a small glass bottle hung around my neck, all wilted like our history.
I pull my phone from my purse, scrolling down to the bottom of my contact list, and clicking on the "DO NOT CALL!!!!" number. I hesitantly dial his number and bring it up to my ear,
"Hey! You reached Calum, I'm away from my phone right now but leave a message!", He declined it immediately, either that or his phone was dead. Not quite sure which one makes me feel better. I roll my eyes at the stupid prepubescent voice and turn my phone off.
I tossed my phone down onto my lap and leaned my head against the wheel. I subconsciously wanted to log back into my Instagram and scroll down an update page to find out anything about him. I had no idea what he was up to or who he was with, it's been years since I've last heard his voice.
"You know this isn't good for either of us, Y/n", he rang through my head as I remember standing on his porch in late July.
"Calum, we've been through this so many times- why can't we just try?"
He runs his hand through his freshly cut hair and shakes his head, "It never ends well, I feel like a fucking lost dog who always limps its way back to you.. I just- Fuck- I can't do thi-"
The last thing I remember was the door closing in my face, leaving me all alone with no closure. I could hear him on the other side, a thump on the door indicating he was leaning against it. I tried for the handle, jiggling it a few times before banging on it, begging for him to talk to me. I couldn't stay mad at him forever, as much as I wanted to. I wanted to scream at him, slap him in his beautiful face, and kiss him all at once.
My phone vibrating snapped me out of my thoughts and I looked down,
DO NOT CALL!!!!
My heart skips a beat, staring at my phone on my lap buzzing away. I bit my lip softly, pulling it closer to my face as I accepted the FaceTime call.
The camera was pointing to the ceiling when I answered, his voice booming loudly as he spoke.
"Hello?"
I let let a breath I didn't know I was holding, trying to gather the right words to say. What was I supposed to say after all this time?
"Cal?", my voice is softer than I had hoped for, the word slipping past my lip like it's begging to finally be let out.
"Holy shit", the camera shifts and he props it up against the wall, waving at me with one hand. Calum sits in his studio chair with his old bass in his lap, headphones pushed back against his long curly hair. His eyes are wide as he raises an eyebrow, "Shit, long time no see."
I adjust the camera against my steering wheel and scoot my seat back, allowing for a better view of myself as I smile innocently with an awkward wave. "Hi Cal, how ya been?" I see his eyes travel down to the necklace around my neck, my fingers dancing around the bottle as I speak.
"Shit, Y/n if I'd known it was you calling I would've answered way faster, I just had deleted your number-", he stops himself, looking up with a sympathetic crooked smile before sighing. I raise a hand up to reassure him instead, "Calum", god saying his name tugs at my heartstrings, "It's okay, I get it... we don't have to dance around it.. now what are you up to?"
He was lying, Calum hood was bluffing to my face and I had no idea. After all this time, he still had my contact listed as "My wildflower", but he couldn't dare admit to me that he didn't answer sooner because he was scared.
Scared of what I was going to say
Scared id tell him I found someone new
Scared of seeing or hearing me again
"I'm actually working on a song right now", he laughs and holds the iconic bass up, a small spot right under the strings that once had a star sticker I placed on it- now scraped off.
I make a face, reminding myself that that was the past and I shouldn't dwell on it too much, but seeing him happier without me didn't make me feel like I thought it would. A part of me wished he was as miserable as I was, cooped up in my room writing stupid songs that were confessing my raw feelings.
"What's it about?", I chirp up as he bends down to play a few notes on the keyboard next to him, assuming it's the intro.
"It's about someone that was in my life, uh someone you don't know- she came around afterward", he says slowly, not meeting my eyes through the screen. I just nod in agreement, opening my mouth to speak.
"Would you like to come over for dinner sometime this week?", The words flow out before I had time to think about it. As I wait for his response, I pick at my nails- a habit he absolutely hated. He would smack my hand out of my mouth every chance we were together, telling me "I'd get worms in my belly" I did stop for a while, but my bitten nails were the only reminder he was actually gone.
"Yeah, I would love to!- Look I'll let you go but we'll keep in touch alright?", He speaks quickly, his hand flying down in one swift movement. With that, he ends the FaceTime call and I'm left looking at my reflection. I looked dumbfounded, smiling to myself as wide as I could.
I couldn't let myself fall for this again, for him- we both knew it wasn't going to end well for either of us. But hell it's been 4 years and I've changed as a person, and by the looks of it, he has too.
My phone buzzed once, twice, and then three before I looked back up at it to see three new messages from none other than Hood.
DO NOT CALL!!!!: I kinda lied, you do know the person I wrote it about
DO NOT CALL!!!!: mp3.wildflower.calumdemo.rec
DO NOT CALL!!!!: my wildflower ;)

Dear Tinseldick
For the @stcreators event 03: comfort
Dear Tinseldick
Rockstar!Eddie Munson x Actor!Fem!Reader (description vague apart from use of she/her pronouns)
Summary: Reader had a rough day at work and Eddie helps to cheer her up
Warnings/Tropes: Established relationship, pure comfort and fluff but content warning for body talk, body image issues and fatphobia, language, people being awful shits. Blink-and-you'll-miss-it naughty talk.
Note: One day I was daydreaming about what couples "in the industry" must vent about and I imagined this is something most actors would have to deal with at least at some point, if not all the time. I tried to treat the issue with the sensitivity and nuance that it deserves.
Word Count: 1500
Eddie stepped into your rented condo in LA, tossing his keys on the table by the door. "Babe, are you home?“ he called.
“Out here,” you responded. Eddie followed your voice and found you out on the balcony deck. The house stood with its back deck facing the Pacific Ocean, on the edge of a small cliff. There was a large porch suspended over the precipice, with a set of wooden stairs leading the 20 feet or so down to the beach. You stood leaning against the balcony railing with your back to him as he stepped onto the porch; you held a glass of wine in one hand and a wadded-up ball of tissues in the other.
“There you are,” he smiled, and walked over to you, putting his arms around your waist. You sniffled. Eddie leaned back a bit to try to get a better look at you. "Hey– is everything alright? Did your audition not go well?"
“No,” you murmured. “No it did not.” You turned to face him, and only then could he see your red-rimmed eyes and the tracks of tears upon your cheeks.
“Oh babe,” he soothed, hugging you to his chest. "I’m sorry. What happened?“
You sniffled against his shirt for a moment before pulling away, wiping your eyes hastily with the tissue in your hand.
"It was going wonderfully. And I’m not just saying that– I know I fucking nailed it. And then the casting director had the gall to look me in the face and tell me…” you broke off as you fought tears.
Eddie ran his hands along your arms, making soothing noises. "Oh honey, don’t cry.” The idea of you being upset was just too devastating for your man. “What did he say to you?“
You took an angry swig of your wine before you continued. "He told me I’d be perfect– if I lost weight.” You took yet another gulp of wine as Eddie’s mouth fell open with shock.
“But–” he stammered. "But that’s insane! There’s nothing wrong with the way you look!“
You laughed bitterly. "I mean, I’ve always been comfortable with my body, but apparently there’s a casting director who feels differently.“
Eddie seemed, for once, to be at a total loss for words. He sputtered in indignation for a moment before he shook his head and gathered himself. "I want to beat his ass right now. Where’s this guy’s office?”
You laughed, somewhat touched. “As much as I’d love to have you throttle the bastard, he’s not worth it.”
Eddie scowled. “Fine, fine, but that loser is going to get a nice Christmas card in the mail from me, with a lovely little ‘go fuck yourself’ message. Nobody upsets my girl and gets away with it.” He sighed, allowing his frustration to show. “You know you can’t listen to that idiot. You’re perfect, honey.”
“Please, Eddie. Nobody’s perfect,” you shook your head.
“Don’t argue!” he grinned. “You are perfect to me! Everyone else can shove it; what they think doesn’t matter.”
"But it does matter," you cried, your voice breaking. "Things have been going so well with my career. I know that there can be real assholes in the industry, but I just thought I had established myself enough that I didn’t have to jump through these ridiculous hoops!" You finished the last bit of wine in your glass and had to fight the urge to throw it off the balcony. "Pardon the cliche, but I feel so…objectified!”
Eddie shook his head sadly. “It’s not a cliche if it’s true. I know, love. Believe me, I do. I had a terrible time in the beginning– I’ve told you some of the stories… the shit that people expected me to do; the things that people said about me. But I kept going, and you will too.” He grasped your arms and bent to look directly into your eyes. "That casting director is a fool. Don’t let tinseldicks like him get you down.“
You managed a small smile. "Tinseldick?”
He nodded. “Yes babe. The shiny skinny things you put all over the Christmas tree. It’s skinny like his dick.”
You burst out laughing. “I know what tinsel is! I just don’t think I’ve heard that particular turn of phrase before.”
“He deserves a special one,” he said with a mischievous gleam in his eye. It faded quickly as his expression turned serious, however. "I love you, you know. With all of my heart, body and soul. I’d be lost without you. Do you believe that?"
You chuckled softly, without humor. "Sometimes I actually do have trouble believing it; that you’re all mine, especially when total strangers force me to second-guess everything."
"You think I don’t feel that way too sometimes? My career might be booming, but I still feel scared. I doubt myself, get self-conscious. Sometimes right before I walk out on stage I have to talk myself out of a full-blown panic attack because I’m like, 'what am I doing here? Who do you think you are'?"
Eddie placed a soft kiss on your forehead and smoothed your hair away from your face. "You must not let this industry change you. You are beautiful and amazing, and you should always remember that."
You felt that you could melt away into a puddle at his words. "You are amazing, and you deserve all the success in the world. Your anxiety is lying to you." You pressed a firm kiss to his soft lips to show him you meant every word. “I love you, Eddie,” you added. “What did I ever do to deserve you?”
“Darling, you bewitched me just by being you.”
He pulled you tightly to him again, and held you for a moment. You sighed against his chest, drinking in the scent of him, and realized that the majority of your anguish had been dispelled. It was nearly impossible to remain upset in Eddie’s presence; the man was quite literally a walking ray of sunshine.
You looked up into his chocolate eyes and smiled.
Eddie smiled back. "Feel better?"
"Yes, actually. You always know how to cheer me up; thank you. I just wish dealing with jerks wasn’t part of my job."
He sighed in acknowledgement. "I know babe. This whole industry is so pretentious and fake, and everyone is either a kiss-ass or a megalomaniac. But we soldier on. By the way, thank you for not throwing your wine glass off the balcony."
That surprised you. "How did you know I was thinking of doing that?”
“I know you better than you realize, babe. Also, you looked at the sand and raised your arm ever so slightly–”
“Shut your mouth,” you said with an impish grin, and tickled his waist. He darted away, laughing. "I ought to throw YOU off the balcony!"
He grinned. "Would you settle for throwing me into bed instead? I’ve had a long day, and I haven’t seen you naked in…oh, nine hours."
"It’s a deal," you said, and he put his arm over your shoulder. You walked to the house together, but you had to separate to walk through the doorway in single-file. As you stepped in front of him, he gave your butt a light smack.
"Hey, nice ass," he said. "Don’t ever change it."
"You’re going to get it," you taunted, and tickled him again.
"Promise?" he replied, laughing, and you gave chase through the house.
A couple taking a nighttime stroll below on the beach looked up, startled, at the sounds of giggling and bellowing laughter that drifted down upon them from above. "Someone up there is having a good night," one said to the other.
It turned out to be true.

Day 266: Saturday September 23, 2023 - "Petco Park Party"
Crashed an overnight into San Diego tonight, William's 7th. And after we all got a much needed rest and reset at the hotel, we set out together for a fun night out in the city. One of the reasons Audrie picked this trip up was because the Cardinals happened to be in town for a late season meaningless series with the Padres. Though the Cards are hardly worth a free flight this year ( 68-87 as of tonights win in extras), we were excited to go revisit the first baseball park Audrie and I visited together almost a decade ago and take William to his 7th MLB park.
It was a firsty for me, seeing the Cardinals in their road throwback Victory Blues that they wear on Saturday nights, and while we took in the early innings from the center field (beach/sandbox), I cheered for them obnoxiously. We moved up to our seats behind home plate where I made friends with the surrounding Friar fans as I sipped the local beers and led the local cheers, and was happy when the bottom of the 9th came and went and we were still playing baseball in the cool ocean air of San Diego. William got baseball cards from the ushers, got a hot dog from his mama, and enjoyed seeing the red team in blue win the game - several breaks for mama milk definitely helped as the night got late.
And the Overnight Crash First Game is what kept us solidly in our perfect seats with a straight view of the outfield where after the game, there'd be fireworks; William's first firework show. And these were great fireworks, a really awesome show. William sat in awe pretending each flash was a rocket ship over the baseball game. Given that he remember the Dodgers game from July earlier this week by the fact that we went with Chad and got a bobble guy - -he'll definitely remember Petco Park, his 7th MLB stadium for that awesome fireworks show.
Every time I come to San Diego, I love it more. I love this stadium, and the people here. This is a great baseball city. Ive been to them all - this one is special. I hope that the get some success soon! So much talent here, and fun atmosphere, and great beer. As we walked around lost on the streets of San Diego, looking for the rental car, hopelessly - I told William, he had permission to grow up a Padres fan. We could make a habit of coming here - as we finally found the car i joked "obviously we need to work on getting to know this city better."
Updated Overnight List / Firsty Game:
1 Milwaukee, WI -> First Brewers Game (May 27, 2023) 2 St Louis, MO -> First Visit to the Arch (May 28, 2023) 3 Long Beach, CA -> First Time Riding A Boat (July 3, 2023) 4 Honolulu, HI -> First Time Flying with Grandma/Papa; First time Swimming in Pacific Ocean (August 5, 2023) 5 Honolulu, HI -> First Hawaiian Shaved Ice (August 8, 2023) 6 San Francisco, CA -> First time flying on Mama’s Plane (she was A), September 2, 2023 7 San Diego, CA -> First time flying no diaper (and no accident), first Fire Works Show after Padres game, September 23, 2023

Day 7 - July 5th
Waking up before the sun.
We all woke up before the sun peeked over the mountains. The morning was chilly and still wet from the previous nights rain. We had left our food in a food storage box at the next campsite. Overnight a second gent had settled into that site which was already occupied by Brian (who was looking to escape people for a week) and his dog Ozzy. The second camper, to Brian’s chagrin, was a real talker.
Not quite yet sunrise.
Across the road from camp.
Chilly morning.
Dan, a rocket scientist with Blue Origin, stopped by our site to bend someone else’s ear. He was hiking the Pacific Northwest Trail and had started a couple days earlier in Glacier NP. He was up on a high ridge the evening before when the weather chased him down to our campground. Regardless, he was quite entertaining. He talked about rockets, Bezos, Elon Musk, nuclear fusion, hiking, biking, kids, and more. We did get a word in here and there.
Later, as we were taking down our tents, two guys from Chicago popped over the top of the 12 mile climb we had done the day before. They were pushing hard to reach Kalispell. Nonetheless, they had time to swap the usual info ( where’d you start, where are you finishing, where are you staying tonight, where are you from, etc.) and to let us know that they were being trailed by 3 friends. By the time we broke camp 45 minutes later we had not yet seen their friends.
We didn’t filter water before we broke camp with the expectation that the next campground had potable water. Since it was 6 fast downhill miles to the camp we learned quickly that we were wrong and that our navigation app was playing a cruel trick on us. We stopped at a campsite and a couple from Colorado offered us water and watermelon. Among other things, we learned that their daughter is a pro beach volleyball player who is trying to go to the Olympics.
The nice folks from Colorado.
After visiting with those folks, we continued our bombing descent into Whitefish. Hungry for something other than Mountain House (freeze dried meals) we stopped at Piggyback BBQ just before rolling into downtown. Having their smoker near the street in-front of the restaurant was the best advertising they could do and their BBQ was exceptionally! While there, we met the Chicago boys’ three friends: John R, John , and Nick.
Exceptional BBQ!
They were serious riders about our age who knew each other from Chicago but now lived in MI, MT, and NM. They were riding lighter than us, as were most of the riders that we saw. They also started in Banff but a day after us. One was riding a more gravel-ish bike while another was on a cross bike, and the third an old steel road bike with wide tires. They were headed to Kalispell for their Zero Day. We were staying in Whitefish.
After lunch we checked into the Best Western on the south side of town to take advantage of their free shuttle, free laundry, and other amenities. After showers and laundry we shuttled to town for pizza, beer, and our biggest treat, ice cream!
Pizza at Blackstar Brewing.
Huckleberry ice cream.
All in all, a pretty good day.
Cheers!
Ride stats:
Miles ridden: 29.2
Elevation gain: 675 ft
Max elevation: 5,637 ft
Total descent: 3,222 ft
Start time: 10:05am
Moving time: 2:25:32
Elapsed time: 3:18:38
Ave speed: 12 mph

It was a beautiful day on Krakoa, the living island parked in the pacific ocean far away from any other land mass to protect its inhabitants from the constant risk that had come with living in other civilizations. Although, despite being the perfect oasis for Mutants to gather and live in prospected harmony and peace, there was always something detracting from that ideal. Whether it was the questioning of how to divide space when so many had grudges with another from the worse choices that always had to be made by someone, the amount of space dedicated to housing when clearing more meant harming the very mutant that gave them the protection they needed, and a few… Important to some dilemmas that were always going down. That’s why Gabby called a meeting with one of her siblings, a sister to be precise! Her sister named Laura. But, the version of her sister named Laura that wasn’t scarred from being assumed dead and left… Alone… Being tortured- You know, that was a very emotional situation that Gabby was in the middle of that she hadn’t really let herself have the time to think about? Cause, like, what could she even say? She's sorry? That she didn't know that she might've been alive and that her "resurrection" was just another cloning process?
“Laura!” Gabby called in a cheer from the small picnic blanket she set up next to one of the many beautiful spots, and luckily free despite the day being so warm, on the beach! So warm, in fact, that you could call it humid. And, if it wasn’t for the fact that the air clung to everyone’s skin like a sticky hug that you would rather die than be apart of easily relayed that information to almost every inhabitant of this great nation; the fact Gabby’s curly hair was in a massive, frizzed mess that was easy to spot out from the treeline a few hundred feet away! “Get over here already, we’ve got to start the girltalk before Jonathan gets back with the watermelon!”

Across the Wide Pacific
Stepping outside the arrivals doors at Sydney airport feels a lot like exiting the Naples (FL) airport — very slightly damp. In many contexts that would not exactly be a compliment, but I do appreciate that the moisture content in the air makes it very clear that I am Somewhere Else than home. The palm trees also help clear that up a bit. It is necessary, to a certain extent, because parts of Sydney feel very like Boston. Our walk down Pitt Street, a main shopping drag, was indistinguishable from the shopping areas just outside Faneuil Hall, except for the unfamiliar flora. Sydney also has a European-but-grew-up vibe that echoes Boston, with a variety of colonial-era buildings alongside modern offices and skyscrapers. I know I said the same thing about London, but their old stuff is older. Sydney and Boston are the same age.
Sydney is notable in my opinion for having a lot of public green spaces. I took a stroll along the Hermitage Foreshore Walk, a sort of cliff walk with views of Sydney harbor on one side and close-ish-to-authentic bush land on the other side, and was struck by the foresight of the government in preserving the land so that everyone could access the waterside. I was also impressed that they allowed people to go to the small beaches that dotted the water’s edge, even though there were slippery rocks and certainly no way of monitoring safety. But they also had signs up saying they would close a lot of the areas from 3pm onwards given that it is NYE and people would probably swarm irresponsibly around these dangerous areas hoping for a view of the fireworks, so the government isn’t inappropriately laissez-faire, they just trust people in normal situations and look out for abnormal ones. I like that. From what we saw this morning — people streaming into the area around the opera house at 9 in the morning to get good viewing spots — NYE is abnormal indeed.
Anyway, the walk was beautiful and I enjoyed the views of the harbor and the new trees.
Our hotel is amazing. The aesthetic is like if Anthropologie got a real job — kind of bohemian chic, but functional. Lots of (real) plants, earth-toned linen sheets, iron. Voluminous and warm shower. It’s in a quiet but not inactive neighborhood. There is an onsite bakery which appears to be amazing — we haven’t tried it yet but we had brunch at the associated cafe and found it delightful. (For me: sourdough toast with avocado, heirloom cherry tomatoes, pickled onions, and some kind of vinaigrette. For Bart: idk, toast with meat? It wasn’t important.) I am eager to try their croissants.
The New Year’s Eve fireworks are tonight, as I alluded to earlier, but given our energy levels and the expected crowds there is no way we are doing that in person. I have aspirations of watching them on TV but given that it’s 6:30pm local time (2:30am home time, my non-reset-watch tells me) and I could easily go to sleep right now, I don’t know how we can make it til midnight. I guess if we don’t make it, we can cheer at [sound of mental gears creaking and grinding] 4pm tomorrow afternoon with the rest of the east coast. Slowpokes.

You Belong Among the Wildflowers
Rees and I along with some good friends just finished walking the Costa Brava in Spain. Rees and I have walked along coasts before. Over the years we have been challenged by British Columbia's West Coast Trail, filled with wonder along California, Oregon, and Washington beaches, and smitten with the rugged beauty of the Cornish coast. The Costa Brava offered something different and familiar in the same breath.
One familiarity were the abundant wild flowers strewn all along our route. Given that it was late April and early May spring flowers are no great surprise. In fact, one of the things that is so enjoyable about walking in the spring are the flowers. Bright, cheery augmenting the landscape as we made our way along.
Flower stream on the Costa Brava
Some were familiar such as what we call 'ice plant' or officially Carpobrotus. Prolific in places and likely every bit the invasive species it is in California. Another invasive in the American West and apparently on the Spanish coast were the Scotch Broom and Gorse. Both share bright yellow flowers but Gorse is not nearly as friendly with its thorny spines. There were also asters and alyssum and most natural but also somewhat surprising to the foreign observer were the legions of Lavender nearly everywhere. The Lavender was the most welcoming with its familiar welcoming scent cheering us as we made our way up the trail. Its often nearby companion, Rosemary, also greeted us here and there.
As we walked I couldn't help but think about the flower encounters one has on the Pacific Crest Trail. Of course timing is everything. In 2017 there was an extraordinary 'super bloom'. If you were walking in the spring of that year in southern California you got to be witness to a myriad of colors and textures that was really super. Spring in the west comes at different times at different elevations. All along the PCT there are floral explosions that welcome the hiker throughout the hiking season. We have featured many of these here over the years. We also give flowers and trees attention in our collection of stories from the PCT, in our book, 'Crossing Paths'.
One of my favorite places to meet up with bursts of color in the form of flowers is where water courses cross the trail. Here you find Monkey Flower, Indian Paintbrush, Penstemon, and so many more. In Spain along the trail spring flowers appeared to be drinking up every last drop of moisture out of the rocky hillsides. Along the coastlines where it was a bit damper the flowers didn't seem to have to work so hard.
Walking in nature affords us the benefits that come from glorious sunrises and sunsets, massive views, starry nights (if you can stay up that long), wildlife, and flora in the form of trees, plants and flowers. Along the Costa Brava all of the above features were noted with delight. The flowers offered me a gentle reminder of how much I get from not just seeing flowers but also getting acquainted and more familiar with them. Of course it helps when the people you walk with really can identify and name all the flower players without hesitation.
PCT Flowers
Being in another part of the world helps me expand on the little corner that I move around in most of the time. Seeing and touching flowers and plants on the Costa Brava was up lifting and expanded my floral appreciation. Even though the context was different from what I am familiar with the feelings are much the same.
Tom Petty says it well:
You belong among the wildflowers
You belong somewhere close to me
Far away from your trouble and worry
You belong somewhere you feel free
You belong somewhere you feel free
