Selfie! 📷
P-22 was the beloved mountain lion of Griffith Park, LA- famous for crossing multiple freeways to end up in this little spot of open land near the Hollywood sign. This unfortunately left him essentially trapped, he was in a largely urban environment cut off from other mountain lions and at the mercy of whatever the modern world could throw at him. Ultimately the fame of P22 has opened a lot of people's eyes to how wild animals thrive-or sometimes don't-thrive in a modern world. From the difficulties posed by roadways to the effects of rodenticide poisoning, a lot of P22's plight has raised awareness on how me can try to co-exist with wildlife.
Here's an article breaking down the events that lead to his passing: https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/17/us/los-angeles-mountain-lion-euthanized-trnd/index.html

Please join us, in partnership with @cd4losangeles and @nationalwildlife in celebrating the life and legacy of P-22 with our interactive tribute wall. Now until January 17, guests will be able to leave personal messages, and share what P-22 meant to you on a beautiful memorial display. Zoo staff will assist guests with their messages and provide supplies from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., including a life-sized mountain lion paw stamp. The memorial will be located *outside* of the Zoo entrance, between the Zoo Patron Exit and the Children's Discovery Center, and is open for all community members to join. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this tribute wall to pay their respects for a one-of-a-kind mountain lion whose legacy will live on with all of us.

The beautiful, famous, puma of LA, who recently passed. He was living in LA when I lived there.

What a great portrait.
Of course, I can’t help but be reminded of P-22.

Mountain lion, puma, cougar, panther—this cat is known by more names than just about any other mammal. But no matter what you call it, it’s still the same cat, Puma concolor, the largest of the small cat species. So how did it get so many names? Mostly because it has such a large range, and people from different countries have called it different things. Photo by Penny Hyde

"In marked contrast to the other domains of parental authority, my mother was loose when it came to the rules regarding food. If I didn't like something, she never forced me to eat it, and if I ate only half my portion, she never made me finish the plate. She believed food should be enjoyed and that it was more of a waste to expand your stomach than to keep eating when you were full. Her only rule was that you had to try everything once."
