Reading TGCF: Chapter Seventeen

For those who don't know, I am reading TGCF for the first time and sharing my thoughts!

If you have not read it, there will be spoilers! Consider this a warning.

Tonight we have some chamomile tea to hopefully, chill me tf out. We have had intermittent water issues all week in my apartment complex and today we have been without water today since 9 am because of pipes bursting.

Cranford (1851-1853) by Elizabeth Gaskell (1810-1865)

This delightful book is a collection of loosely associated stories set in Cranford, the fictional name for Knutsford, located 14 miles SW of Manchester (Manchester is called Drumble in the book). They depict a preoccupation with class and etiquette among a close group of older genteel women in reduced circumstances. A comedy of manners is the general motif. The humor is innocent and dry, and there are scenes that are so hilarious that I still laugh every time I think about them. On the other hand, their strict adherence to the social code, though seemingly righteous, is shown to sometimes have tragical consequences. While maintaining their genteel standards remains central to their sense of identity and tradition, the women adapt to circumstances and discreetly relax their standards for reasons both practical and enlightened. I will give you the pleasure of discovering them for yourselves. While approaching the end of the book I experienced a few peculiar symptoms: a tingling of the nose and dampness about the eyes, early Spring allergies no doubt. Cranford is funny, bittersweet, and wise. What a lovely book!

Anilao Beaches in Mabini, Batangas

I am back! I know it's been a few days, but this week has been the absolute pits at work. Semester start up, new students, ramp up in projects, and alarm testing; it has been A Lot.
