any idea if the clip of rebecca caine singing the jewel song from faust is still circulating anywhere? i saw it was on youtube at one point, but then the video got set to private. i would give anything to hear it! thank you for the amazing care, time, and dedication put into this blog… you’re a wonderful resource and your blog is thoroughly appreciated!

Oh man, thank you for your lovely words, but... yeah, this is unfortunately not something I can really help you with. I love Rebecca Caine's Christine and based off her social media, I think she's also wonderfully funny, but I've never listened to her singing opera, so I don't have any copies of that. But I can toss this out to my followers - anybody there have videos of her singing from Faust, or any other opera in general?

Ja en la recta final de la titularitat de Simon Rattle al capdavant de la Berliner Philharmoniker, he pogut veure l’streaming del concert que va tenir lloc el 14 d’octubre a la seu de l’orquestra berlinesa, la famosa sala Philharmonie, gràcies a la fantàstica iniciativa del Digital Concert Hall.

L’òpera representada en una producció minimalista de Peter Sellars, col·laborador  habitual de la Berliner en l’etapa Rattle, amb qui ha deixat colpidores versions de les passions de Bach, però que en aquest cas crec que la proposta no ha estat del reeixida.

Sellars només diferència els humans dels animals amb la subtil gestualitat i per tant dependrà de la destresa dels cantants per poder identificar qui és qui dels diversos personatges que pugen sobre l’entarimat on també es situarà Rattle per dirigir. Unes pantalles d’alta definició projecten imatges d’animalons diversos, plantes de tota mena i de natura, que són innegablement belles però que no sé si acaben d’ajudar o distreure de la narració de l’obra original, la faula que aprofita la història de la guineueta per parlar-nos de la vida, la tendresa, el pas del temps o la llibertat. Sellars no m’ha ajudat gens.

La fabulosa Berliner i l’explosiva direcció de Simon Rattle són de llarg el millor. L’extraordinària òpera de Leoš Janáček necessita d’una opulència orquestral brillant i transparent que en mans de l’orquestra berlinesa i el director anglès semblen insuperables.

El baix-baríton canadenc Gerald Finley i la soprano anglesa Lucy Crowe són els intensos protagonistes d’un extens repartiment entre adults i nens (no sempre al mateix nivell d’exigència) que forma un conjunt homogeni, si bé la fidelitat de Rattle amb el ja més que caduc Willard White no s’acaba d’entendre.

Angela Denoke fa, sorprenentment després d’unes darreres actuacions més que problemàtiques que la situaven en un declivi irremissible, una bona prestació com a guineu mascle. Com també destaca vocalment el tenor Burkhard Ulrich com a mestre d’escola, mosquit o pollastre, que per altra banda no sap distingir amb prou distinció amb el llenguatge corporal.

Cal gaudir del que Rattle i l’orquestra ens ofereixen en una bellíssima partitura que és com un gran fresc simfònic amb intervencions vocals. L’anècdota escènica no molesta però no aporta res especialment notable, costa entendre el que passa sobre l’entarimat amb una taula i quadre cadires com a tot atrezzo escenogràfic i un vestuari que homogeneïtza humans i animals.

I cal reivindicar sempre a Janáček
