Perinteet - eng; traditions
I present you my contribution to the F1 x national costume collaboartion, the Finnish national costume, modeled by Valtteri Bottas.
Finnish national costumes have generally similar fit all around the country, but the fabric design and colours change regionally. Valtteri is from Päijät-Häme region, so the style and fabric are the Häme style.

In early September, the daily Iltalehti opened an election compass on the US presidential election – a series of 12 policy position statements that readers could agree or disagree with to see which of the two candidates most closely align with their own views.
The question presented on the war in Ukraine asked whether the US should focus its policy on continuing armed support for Ukraine or on pursuing a quick peace.
Tallying up the results to date, the paper reported on Thursday that the difference between answers from tens of thousands of respondents was very slight, but a tiny majority (50.83%) of respondents were in favour of pursuing a quick path to peace, a policy espoused by the Republican candidate Donald Trump.
Iltalehti points out that pressuring Ukraine to come to the negotiating table has been seen, at least among Ukrainians, as supporting Russia's aims.
Although opinion polls in the US are extremely even at the moment, a substantial majority of respondents to Iltalehti's poll, just under 85 percent, favoured the election of Democrat (current Vice President) Kamala Harris.
Three-quarters of respondents to a poll published earlier this week by business lobby Eva said that if it was possible, they'd vote for the Democrat candidate in next week's US presidential election, while just one in ten said they would opt for her Republican rival.
Continuing guaranteed care
More than half of Finland's welfare regions plan to continue offering the current primary care guarantee, even though the law will no longer require it from the beginning of next year.
In a survey carried out by the Uutissuomalainen news group, 14 of the wellbeing services counties that provide healthcare and social services in Finland, said they aim to continue to guarantee residents access to non-urgent primary healthcare within a maximum time period of two weeks.
The regions pledging to continue providing the guarantee were those in West-Uusimaa, East-Uusimaa, Vantaa and Kerava, Pirkanmaa, Päijät-Häme, Kainuu, Kymenlaakso, South Karelia, South Savo, North Savo, Central Finland, Ostrobothnia, Lapland and Southwest Finland.
In contrast, in Satakunta and Kanta-Häme, it is estimated that general access to primary care will take longer. Similarly, the City of Helsinki reported that its target is to guarantee access to non-emergency care within 30 days.
Officials in Central Uusimaa, North Ostrobothnia and North Karelia, responded that service levels cannot be determined until next year's budgets are drawn up. The welfare region covering South Ostrobothnia did not take a clear position on whether or not it will continue to provide a care guarantee.
The wellbeing services county of Central Ostrobothnia did not respond to the survey.
Two notes, not one
Ilta-Sanomat carries an STT report that the Russian Embassy in Finland has sent two diplomatic notes to the Finnish Foreign Ministry regarding the confiscation of Russian state property in Finland, rather than the one first reported on Tuesday.
Mikko Kivikoski, Deputy Head of the Foreign Ministry's Department for Asia and Oceania, says that the notes were delivered on Monday and Tuesday. In addition, the Russian Embassy has been in contact with the Foreign Ministry by phone.
On Wednesday, Russia summoned the Finnish Ambassador to Russia, Marja Liivala, for talks in Moscow concerning the seizure of Russian state property in Finland.
According to Kivikoski, Russia raised the same issues in those talks as the Russian Embassy in Finland had previously raised with the Finnish Foreign Ministry and Finland's National Enforcement Authority.
"They have asked for more information about the National Enforcement Authority's actions and presented the protest, which they have also raised publicly in their press releases," Kivikoski told STT.
Hedgehogs under threat
Maaseudun Tulevaisuus tells readers that the global population of hedgehogs, those cute prickly little garden visitors, has declined dramatically and may soon become an endangered species.
The decline in their numbers is due to the deterioration of the their habitats, according to new a report by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The paper quotes University researcher Mervi Kunnasranta of the University of Eastern Finland as saying that no precise information available on the number of hedgehogs in Finland. However, reported road fatalities of hedgehogs and observations of hedgehog numbers by hobbyists suggest that their numbers have also sharply declined in Finland.
According to the IUCN report, hedgehog populations have declined in half of the countries where the animals live. Numbers are estimated to have fallen by between 16 and 33 percent over the last ten years.
The fall is the result of habitats being degraded in particular by intensive farming and increased construction.
The hedgehog is a protected species in Finland. The deliberate disturbance, capture or killing of protected animals and interference with nests, dens and eggs of affected species is a criminal offence.
"Miserable driving"
Snow and sleet, sleet and even "a decent snowstorm" are in the forecast for the rest of the week in Finland, points out Iltalehti.
Snowfall is expected especially in the north and central parts of the country, but may also occur in some areas in the south.
The paper describes potential driving conditions are "miserable" for the rest of the week. The traffic management agency Fintraffic has issued a reminder to those setting out on the roads to be aware of the slippery conditions.
"It is a good idea to change to winter tyres at as soon as possible, and to allow more time than normal for travel. Remember to maintain sufficient safety distances on the road to avoid rear-end collisions," says Sanna Piilinen, Head of Fintraffic's Road Traffic Centre.

Saw your comment on Nordickies' post that you have regional OCs, are they regional OCs of Finland and would you mind sharing about them? I'm on the lookout for Nordic regional OCs to discuss and draw fanart for. (You would also be my 3rd mutual with regional OCs that I promise to draw... eventually, when I'm less slow and lazy)
Yessss! I've wanted to draw them myself as well but I guess I just haven't got into it yet (always feeling kinda insecure about drawing).
I guess larger areas like Ostrobothnia and Savonia etc would like to be split like they are split in the current regional division as they can have quite some cultural differences nowadays so basically you'd have a lot of twins like:
North Savo and South Savo twins
North Karelia and South Karelia twins
Kanta-Häme and Päijät-Häme twins
And of course the Ostrobothnia quadruplets, one of whom is Swedish-speaking
So maybe the bigger units like big Ostrobothnia would be like old countries so they're gone but there are the little ones now instead...
I'm kinda struggling with Lapland because the Finnish part is totally a little brother to the Ostrobothnia quadruplets but a small part of it is within Sápmi. I'm not really sure how to navigate that in an inoffensive way...
Ok big ramble happening now so let's put a cut here. Warning the next part is L O N G!
Kainuu
So we have Kainuu, she used to live in the Ostrobothnian house... room... whatever they are in the region-verse ^^'' She always thought North Ostrobothnia was cooler than her, like a big sister, thinking her dialect is better etc. And of course, North Ostrobothnia was also wealthier. Kainuu would conduct her trade of tar through North Ostrobothnia. But at the same time, she desperately wanted to build her independence from the "big sister", she was Eastern Finnish culturally after all, unlike the Western Finnish North Ostrobothnia. Even tried to become her own province (move out of the house?), but failed. However, now she has successfully become her own region.
She used to be very agricultural with no big cities or "high culture" to show off, although she is quite the skilled poet. Everyone still sees her as a starving, poor farmer, which she indeed might have been at one point (not unique in this aspect though), but others seem to have failed to notice that she's become quite tech focused! She develops video games and does programming, and even set up Europe's fastest supercomputer in her house with the help from some other European countries.
Though of course, she has never abandoned her hobby of hiking and, controversially to some, hunting.
Ostrobothnia
In Finnish, Pohjanmaa. In Swedish, Österbotten.
Like I said, there's four of them, and one of them is Swedish-speaking (primarily). Though some other Swedish-speaking regions out there might argue that his dialect is barely understandable... And oh boy does he like sailing, it and fishing are incredibly important to him. To avoid confusion, he might introduce himself to you as "Pampas".
He also has close ties with South Ostrobothnia. This guy though? Walks around in a Jussipaita and a knife on his belt. He is very proud of his identity, probably more than anyone else of the regions. In history, he had the unfortunate reputation of starting a fight, no matter with fists or knives, and no matter if it was at someone's wedding. While he doesn't do this anymore, he is not ashamed of that history. He thinks it's badass. He is also an expert musician, known for his vast collection of folk music.
(Now I'll just add: I go to singing classes, and yesterday I was literally singing a folk song from there and what was it about you ask? It was about throwing hands at a wedding :D)
(These guys also have some controversial hobbies related to furs...)
I guess I should also add that he's quite religious, and so are Central and North Ostrobothnia.
Central Ostrobothnia is also musical, she is a true fiddle-playing master. North Ostrobothnia I already talked about a bit. Her speciality is the kantele. She is the most successful out of the four, although that does not mean the others would be miserable either.
Savonia
Welcome to the relaxed company of the Savo twins! They will invite you for a cup of coffee and some kalakukko on the market square. North Savo will insist that her capital is the center of the world. They have close ties to the Karelias and share a lot in common. And you can never be quite sure if you can get a straight answer out of them. They are also "the funny ones".
Karelia
Karelia twins are also quite relaxed and hospitable like the other easteners, and they also have quite some song and kantele skills. They will bake you a trillion different kinds of pies, and South Karelia says he'll get you some "atom" and "hydrogen" and comes back with meat pies. I guess North Karelia would also be mending her ties to Russia's region "Republic of Karelia"? They used to live in the same house after all. (I'm referring to pre-Swedish rule). Although since then, North Karelia has got a fair share of Savonian influence in her as well, including starting to primarily speak in a Savonian dialect. (Like I said, close ties.) South Karelia used to be so wealthy and "cultured", but Russia put a little wrench in that...
Both have been on the front lines of countless of wars, as well as being tossed around between Sweden and Russia.
Pirkanmaa
Holy shit this guy is suddenly speeding to the top. At this rate, he is going to be challenging Uusimaa himself! I bet Varsinais-Suomi is grinding her teeth together in jealousy (they have a playful rivalry). At one point in history, he had quite the communist opinions. Now, he'll make you eat blood sausages.
Uusimaa
The wealthiest, the most attractive, the most international, owner of Helsinki. Other regions will call him "arrogant" and accuse him of "thinking he's better than the rest of us". He will probably complain about having to pay stuff for the other regions though. Maybe he will throw in slang words originating from Somali and the other regions can only be confused. Whether the others like it or not though, he is very culturally influential. He's not a bad guy and is quite accepting.
Varsinais-Suomi
The original Finland! The location of the original capital! Reduced to what?? As said, she has a playful rivalry with Pirkanmaa and they compete with each other in a lot of things, especially ice hockey.
Keski-Suomi
A rapper. He's a rapper.
-------------------
Well that's not quite all of them but it's all of the ideas I have in my head now. I kinda really wish to avoid all the stuff about like, areas taken by the Soviet Union etc because that's like really politically controversial I'd just rather not touch it tbh. Like the nature of Karelia being split to multiple parts etc so I want to make sure this is only about the regions of Finland and not like a historical cultural area or an ethnicity.
I didn't include appearances right now but I do have some ideas about those as well.

Finland City Flag Wars: Round 1
This tournament is being held in honor of Finnish flags winning two recent tournaments in a row: South Ostrobothnia in the Regional Flag Wars and Helsinki in the Olympic Flag Wars! I will eventually be holding a tournament focusing on Finnish municipal heraldry, as there are many cities in Finland with unique coats of arms. I held a poll recently to see which tournament my followers were more interested in, and the city flag tournament won, but the poll was close enough that I’ve decided to do the heraldry tournament as well sometime. Let me know in the comments which city in Finland has the best flag!
Round 1:
1. Pori, Satakunta vs. Vantaa, Uusimaa vs. Vårdö, Åland
2. Hamina, Kymenlaakso vs. Kokkola, Central Ostrobothnia vs. Mariehamn, Åland
3. Joensuu, North Karelia vs. Pyhäranta, Southwest Finland vs. Hyvinkää, Uusimaa
4. Raseborg, Uusimaa vs. Föglö, Åland vs. Raisio, Southwest Finland
5. Rauma, Satakunta vs. Oulu, North Ostrobothnia vs. Vaasa, Ostrobothnia

Helsingin Sanomat reports that bullying has increased in Helsinki schools.
That's according to the School Health Promotion study, a biannual survey of the state of the nation's schoolchildren performed by the National Institute for Health and Welfare (Finnish acronym THL).
The survey found that an average of 9.6 percent of pupils in Helsinki schools experienced bullying once a week. That represents an increase of two percentage points on the last survey, which was carried out two years ago.
HS looks deeper into the results to see what the situation is like in individual schools in the capital.
The paper has a handy tool allowing parents to check individual schools. The data shows that some 29.6 percent of children at Tahvonlahden Primary school in Laajasalo reported being bullied once a week, the highest school-specific number in the study.
The school's rector told HS that things have improved dramatically since the survey was done, with some 68 percent of pupils saying in the autumn that they were not bullied at all. That is up from around 30 percent in the survey.
There was wide variation in the results, with Swedish-language schools in Helsinki reporting much lower prevalence of bullying.
The survey is based on questionnaires sent to 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th graders.
MPs' shareholdings
Kauppalehti takes a look at legislators' declarations of financial interests, which have been required since 2015.
The paper found some fairly lax rules on MPs' investments. Firstly, any shareholding worth less than 50,000 euros does not need to be declared.
KL looked at the shareholding registry for Fortum, the majority-state-owned energy firm. They found plenty of MPs complying with the rules, but still holding thousands of euros worth of Fortum shares without declaring that in the parliamentary register of interests.
In mid-October National Coalition MP Pauli Kiuru had some 44,800 euros worth of Fortum shares. Other Fortum shareholders included Timo Harakka (14,800 euros, SDP), Atte Kaleva (8,600 euros, NCP), Markku Eestilä (8,500 euros, NCP), and Antti Lindtman (6,300 euros, SDP).
Of those, only Eestilä had declared his holding in the register of interests.
Companies where MPs exercise significant control are another issue. They only need to declare those shareholdings if they own more than 30 percent of the voting shares.
A parliamentary working group has suggested that the threshold be reduced to 20 percent of the voting shares.
Vaccine fury
Ilta-Sanomat follows up on an Etelä-Suomen Sanomat story about angry Lahti residents causing ructions as they demand Covid booster shots.
The autumn Covid wave is in full swing in Finland, with plenty of people falling ill. That has prompted a belated rush for booster doses of vaccine, but capacity to deliver them is being tested in the Päijät-Häme region.
People have been abusive towards bookers on the phone lines, and even turned up at vaccination centres and tried to demand inoculation without an appointment.
The current vaccination programme is limited to those in risk groups, who are mostly over 65 years of age. Their behaviour has surprised health professionals.
"We're always hearing about young people this and young people that," said vaccination coordinator Henry Raita. "But there has been more disruptive behaviour from the over-65s than from the youth, which is a little strange. We are talking about grown up people who have plenty of life experience, and then they don't know how to behave."

Entä Päijät-Häme mommy?
I don't know if different muncipalities having their own coat of arms is a thing outside of Finland, but I rather like many of them. Like, the only way to go wrong in a coat of arms is to make it boring, the best ones are the most memorable ones. Have a collection of the few that I consider the least aesthetic, most boring coats of arms of all finnish muncipalities. If you see your own hometown coat on this list, do not come at me - fix your own problems first and move somewhere else.
Bland, generic, tells no story. Unfuckable. The kind of shit you'd see on the shield of an enemy that's getting their ass kicked by the Cool Sexy Woman Knight in the first round of a jousting event in a corny but riveting fantasy movie. Now, let's look at some of the cool ones:
Striking. Distinct. Tells you a story, gives you some clue about what this place is and what is the story of the people who live here. Can occasionally afford more than two colours per coat. Now that's sexy. These, these are good. I had a hard time choosing only nine that I liked best, so I decided to divide the examples of Sexy Coats of Arms into non-animal and animal cathegories. These are examples of the cool ones with animals on them:
And as a final special mention we have Kouvola. The city of Kouvola largely doesn't deserve the bad rep it has - the crime rate isn't that high, the title of "the ugliest city in Finland" is a bit harsh since it does have some vaguely soviet/dystopian grunge brutalist aesthetic if you're into that sort of thing, and in my experience the friendliest crackheads in Finland. But all those things said, their coat of arms does kinda feature this thing eerily similar to the symbol of Chaos
