“I know this is kind of cheesy, but do it for me, yeah? There’s something I wanna try.” Dylan had leaned over slightly, words whispered against Holly’s ear when his friends looked particularly distracted. Despite being surrounded by people, it wasn’t hard to find those small moments of secrecy; after all, the amusement park’s colorful lights and tacky music was enough to keep anyone distracted. He didn’t take the blonde’s hand, no, that would’ve been risky, painfully obvious, but he did smile proudly as he informed his friends, “Holly and I will take a ride on the ferris wheel, she’d never done that before,” he rolled his eyes like it was a given, a bit teasing, entirely too amused, “so we’ll catch up with you guys later.” He added, not even waiting for the others’ response before his gaze was moving to the pretty girl by his side then, slight tilt of his head towards the attraction so she’d take the first step.

Recently I got roped (ha) into an Age of Sail roleplay, and decided I wanted to play the ship's cook. I then realized I don't know too much about provisioning a ship in the Age of Sail! I figured you'd be the sort of fellow to know where I could find resources on that kind of information though?
Well, for a start I recommend sending a similar Ask to @ltwilliammowett (Beat To Quarters) who knows far more about The Age of Sail / Wooden Ships & Iron Men subject than I do.
*****
In the meanwhile here are a couple of books, both of which you may well be able to get through your library, or buy pretty cheaply for your research library. They're also an entertaining read.
The first was recommended to me by Terry Pratchett - "'If you haven't read it, you should!" - when we were at a con together and he was researching "Nation".
It's "Feeding Nelson's Navy" by Janet MacDonald, available here as an ebook and from Amazon as a Kindle Unlimited free read.
The second is "Lobscouse & Spotted Dog" by Anne Chotzinoff Grossman & Lisa Grossman Thomas.
Funny how both books use the same period image - "Shipmates Carousing Below Decks" by William Pyne - as cover art.
"Lobscouse" deals with the same period as "Navy", while also being the author-approved official cookbook of Patrick O'Brian's "Aubrey / Maturin" novels.
Here's a Reddit about making dishes from it, and here's a blog page about making Spotted Dog and why Suet Makes a Difference.
I've already posted about the role correct cooking fats play in making traditional dishes "taste right", and since Atora brand makes both carnivore and vegetarian suets, it's worth tracking down.
Here's a blog page which summarises the Age of Sail diet - think of it as an exam crib to tide you over until you get the books and learn more.
*****
Here's Max Miller of "Tasting History" making lobscouse:
youtube
And here are Dylan Hollis and Max making that ubiquitous on-board delicacy and culinary ingredient, ship's biscuit (hardtack / hard-tack / hard tack).
tumblr
youtube
Something very similar was still issued as a ration item at the beginning of the 20th century and into World War One. J.R.R. Tolkien would certainly have encountered Biscuits, Ration, H&P, Army No.4...
...and may well have used them as a basis for the waybread "cram" as mentioned in "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings". This description has the ring (hah!) of familiarity about it.
"If you want to know what cram is, I can only say that I don’t know the recipe; but it is biscuitish, keeps good indefinitely, is supposed to be sustaining, and is certainly not entertaining, being in fact very uninteresting except as a chewing exercise." "The Hobbit" ch.13, "Not at Home"
No.4 biscuits were so hard that soldiers could use them as substitutes for wood...
...and Nelson's sailors probably did the same with theirs.
*****
Terry Pratchett took this wooden quality and - with the dial turned up to eleven - transformed it into the rocky quality of Dwarf bread.
Here's a health nut's real-life version of a healthy nut loaf...
...while this is an example of sedimentary conglomerate rock.
With a bit of judicious cropping, the captions could be swapped and a casual glance would never notice.
Of course this post wouldn't be complete without a certain GIF.
So...
*****
To finish, a few links to more video.
One (12 years ago).
Two - 1 year, including some of the ship's biscuit made in that first one (!)
Three - also 1 year, featuring other dishes - pease pudding ("dog's body"), lobscouse and plum duff. Oh, and ship's biscuit ...
Those are from Townsends, another great source for 18th century food and cooking.
This last example is by Dan Snow, in an extract from a longer History Hits documentary, and is a short general overview of period Navy rations - and of course, ship's biscuit... :->

Behold: the Biblically Accurate Angel Food Cake!
(Inspired by https://www.instagram.com/p/C3djEWBSA8K/ )
Today was my Second Annual Bad Idea Potluck. I make things that I know are great but can't convince other people to try, and also things that sound horrifying but I'm morbidly curious. Other creations from today:
Chicken and vegetable aspic:
Ham salad:
Tomato Soup Cake, from Dylan Hollis. Voted "most better than it sounds."
Bean Pie, also from Dylan Hollis:
A savory feta cheesecake, with a recipe from Cato:
And honeyed mushrooms from Apicius:
I also made a couple loaves of bread:
Old Fashioned and Manhattan jello shots (Old Fashioned was too strong but the Manhattan was great):
and a bizarre cocktail called the Death Flip (which was truly great, do recommend if you like that sort of thing).
Extremely fun party; will do again.

Book haul at HPB
First, here's a pic of everything.
Here, you can see each of the P. G. Wodehouse titles I got. Never bought Jeeves and Wooster books before, but this should be a great read. The BBC series was hilarious, what I recall seeing when I was a kid. Always adored Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry; in fact, I already have books written by them, too. Also got a couple Jane Austen titles and a Fyodor Dostoevsky that are part of a special edition series.
Then I got a bunch of books in this gorgeous special edition collection by Chiltern Publishing. I already had Jane Eyre and a couple other titles in this series, so I hope I don't have any extra copies of anything. I don't think so, but I'll have to unbox my books to find out for sure. I'm a bit worried that I might already have a copy of Wuthering Heights....
And then these books that are more random. I already had books 1 and 2 of Parasyte, so now I also have book 3. Then I already had Baking Yesteryear by B. Dylan Hollis, but this is a signed copy! The Philip Pullman book is a collection of his essays about the writing process. The Devil's Dictionary by Ambrose Bierce is considered by some to be one of the 100 greatest masterpieces of American literature. And then Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is the one book I actually went there for. 😅 Too bad they didn't have a pretty copy, but that's ok. Maybe Chiltern will release one later. 🤔

some of my favorite Dylan Hollis quotes include;
"*thud in the background* .. I think that was the demon I've summoned 😐"
"f l o o f p o w d e r :D"
"this is culinary terrorism >:("
" 'and bake in a hot oven'. Because otherwise I'd bake it in a cold oven."
"and eight cups of powdered sugar. ... CUPS!?"
also have a 2 hr compilation of him I've been watching slowly over the course of a few days :3

“ mhm... I think you don't like watching dylan hollis... ” he's being sarcastic.

One of my friends sent me to YouTube to watch Dylan Hollis videos and, wow, I don't often type someone immediately, but he gives off HUGE "DJ" 7w6 / 793 sp/so vibes.
I am guessing ENTP. He's Doctor Who in the Kitchen, lol.
He's so entertaining. Where can I get one for my house? :P

(from crossed-worlds) ( Longma to Wukong)
“ Bake to my liking? Sweetie none of this is to my liking. ”
☯ B. DYLAN HOLLIS HISTORICAL COOKING SENTENCE STARTERS P. 1 | @crossed-worlds ☯
“Hey, I tried to warn you about this when Mei handed you the cook book and asked you to try some of the recipes.”
How did the dragon NOT see that coming a mile away? His great-granddaughter was the Queen of being an absolute menace at times — which impressed him at times. So, the second she handed Ao Lei the cook book, he could already sense that a scheme was cooking. And they hadn’t even baked anything yet either.
His eyes turning back to the recipe in question — which seemed to have originated in the west? It certainly wasn’t any recipe he was familiar with that was from their home that much was obvious. The combination of ingredients making him question who thought this would be ‘delicious’ in the first place. It sounded like something a drunk would make after coming home and just slapping something together without caring how it tasted.
“That looks like a sewage pipe bursted — “
“ — please tell me we’re not going to be trying that after we bake it.”
No way was he going to even try that, even with his dearest brother having baked it. Anything else the dragon prince made? He’d gobble down in a heartbeat without a second thought — but not the current monstrosity. That LOOKED like it would actually kill him.
And as much as he tested his immortality at times — he wasn’t about to do that here. Nope.
#Here Comes Monkey King | IC {Sun Wukong}#crossed-worlds#crossedworlds#anon#anonymous#ask#answered#Heehee; I couldn't help myself here X'D#You can't tell me Mei wouldn't give her Great-Grandpa a cursed cook book to be a gremlin XD#And than be like 'You should make a few of the recipes 8D' all innocently XD#When Longma and Wukong try to have a wholesome baking session together and than THIS happens X'D#Wukong VC: I refuse to try to eat that; it looks like death and I am allergic#Wukong VC: WE SHOULD'VE HAD PIGSY HELP US#Pigsy being sparred this time and not having to see the horror that is being created in the kitchen right now

Wish I could describe cars better but I’m still learning the right terminology, so here’s some interesting info:
Roxie’s car is inspired by the Continental Mark V, this specific styling feels like something she’d fall in love with, despite the cost. Being a hyperactive trans girl fairy who did some very reckless things to get where she is, impulse control is not her strong suit. Hers is adventure grade, meaning it’s made of durable, high-quality material that will shake off bullets and crashes.
In story it’s referred to as a, “sports car,” and although the real vehicle doesn’t fit the bill, the one built in P&C boasts much faster acceleration, higher speed and better handling.
B. Dylan Hollis did a great quick rundown of the car, which you can find here.
And if you’d like to read Poundcake and Circumstances, it’s available here on Tumblr and over on Tapas.

A recipe which just happens to be an ad for a brand of molasses.
Or an ad for a brand of molasses which just happens to be a recipe.
Your choice.
Either way, it's also a WW2-era US rationing recipe, though in comparison to what UK rationing was like at the same time, it doesn't look rationed at all.
And definitely an ad.
One word of caution! Be sure you use Grandma's Old Fashioned Molasses...
*****
Back in the 1980s my mum had a 1950s or '60s US cookbook - I've no idea where / when she found or was given it - which was a collection of sponsored recipes, all emphasising use of the recipe-sponsor's branded ingredients.
I don't think it was intended to be funny, but after more than a few pages that was what it became, helped by the food photography being just what you'd expect from that period... :-P
A couple of her UK cookbooks did the same branded-ingredient thing, but I don't remember any with the manic intensity of the American hard sell, with its air of "use only our products or great woe will befall your culinary endeavours"...
She liked the "recipes" (AKA agglomerations of disparate foodstuffs) which used a product, often a highly improbable one like Weetabix (cork mat) or Shredded Wheat (pot-scrubber), in unlikely and rather desperate ways that put the product front and centre whether it belonged there or not.
Dylan Hollis has shown that Improbable Ingredients - tomato soup, potatoes, mayonnaise, even sauerkraut - sometimes actually work. But sometimes they don't, and those times are BAD. :->
*****
However Mum was also fond (in the humorous not cookery sense) of recipes which bolded the branding not just of ingredients but also in the method, as if - she said - an invisible advertising goblin was marching up and down the margin of the book, beating a drum and waving a placard.
Most of those were (probably) OK recipes, but were hard to take seriously when they looked something like this:
"...stir 3 tablespoons of Whizzo™ Tomato Paste and one of Whizzo™ Worcestershire Sauce into 2 cups of Whizzo™ Beef Bouillon and season with Whizzo™ Black Pepper and Whizzo™ Iodized Salt before adding 1/2 lb of Whizzo™ Macaroni..."
I can't remember seeing Whizzo™ Boiling Water, but it can't have been for lack of trying and I may just have missed it.
*****
I also can't remember ever seeing Mum make anything from that book.
This was because she couldn't get, or had never heard of, many of the US brands...
Or because using Lea & Perrin's Worcestershire Sauce or Saxa Salt instead of Whizzo™ ones really would set off a domestic disaster...
Or because, whenever she opened it, she usually forgot about cooking and just sat down for a good laugh...
:->
BTW molasses has the exact same number of calories as sugar.

Lemon, naples yellow, titans, and azure blue!
lemon; what’s your comfort food?
Oooh, that's hard. I can't choose just 1, but my top 3 would probably be chocolate cake, homemade mac-n-cheese, and eggnog pie (if you like eggnog, look up 'b dylan hollis eggnog pie' on youtube. its so so so easy to make. i made it last christmas. my mom didnt really like it bc its very rich so i ate basically the whole pie myself over the span of a few days. best thing i've ever eaten)
naples yellow; where do you feel most at home?
Oh this is a hard one too. I don't think any of the places I've lived have really felt like home to me tbh. Most of them have bad memories attached to them. I think... once I get my own place. When I live alone, when it's quiet and I can decorate it however I want, and only the people I want to invite in can enter... I think that will be home for me.
titans; do you prefer slow mornings or relaxing evenings?
Ohh man, obviously it's so nice to finally finish a long day at work, and be able to just relax. But there's nothing better than waking up on a Saturday morning, and knowing that there are no responsibilities, and you can take as much time as you need
azure blue; what’s your favorite type of tea, if any?
I really like Chamomile tea, and regular black tea is my second favourite. I usually put an obscene amount of honey in my teas though :p

A sexy, unassuming woman unlike any he has ever met. Her bossy attitude challenges him, while her green eyes melt the frost around his heart. They draw out something in him that he has never experienced. Feelings. Are they the Christmas miracles he needs – or will he walk away from the sweetest gift he has ever been offered? Love.
