Hey, guys! Welcome back to the next installment of Yandere!Jeremiah. I was just going to let you know it does get a bit spicy at the end so if that’s not your thing you won’t miss much. As a side note I’d also like to say that I don’t condone things that Jeremiah does in this chapter and if any of you find the ending uncomfortable I can change it. I felt my fists tighten around the fabric of my skirt, my heart pumping wildly. Jeremiah was going to marry me?! At the sound of the door opening behind me I quickly swiveled to see Ecco, her body now in a long, skintight red and black dress. Her eyes instantly lit up as soon as she saw me, her lips spread in a smile. “Oh, Y/n. Don’t. You. Look. Gorgeous! Boss was right, you are the most exquisite woman in all of Gotham!”

She giggled as she walked to me, her heeled boots clicking the wooden floorboards beneath us. “Ecco, where’s Bruce?”

“He’s been taken care of don’t you worry.”

Taken care of? Don’t tell me he’s-

“He’s not dead, sweetheart. Boss made sure he came to your special day!”

Ecco began smoothing the fabric of my dress down and fluffing my veil to give it volume. As she did her pretty work the door opened once more to reveal Jeremiah, his attire being that of a suit in dark red, black, orange and dark blue. His black dress shoes scuffed the floor as he came towards us, my gaze lowering to the ground. “Don’t you look beautiful, darling!~ If I knew blue was your color I would have had you wear it all the time!”

“Isn’t it considered unlucky if you see the bride before she walks down the aisle?”

Jeremiah chuckled and lifted my chin which caused my gaze to be fixed on him. “Not in my mind its not.”

He side glanced at his proxy and waved his hand, her taking the hint and leaving. As much as I didn’t like the both of them I wish Ecco would have stayed. It would have been better than being with the beast alone. As soon as her heels radiated down the hall Jeremiah leaned in and gave a kiss to my neck, I flinching upon contact. “We’re going to be so happy together, dearest. It’ll just be us ruling this city together and no one will stop us, not even your dear Brucie.”

“What did you do to him? I swear if you hurt a single hair on his-”

“I would never! Bruce is just as special to you as he is me,” I turned away in disgust. “But you’re my top priority~”

“Why can’t you understand that I don’t want to be yours? Jeremiah, I don’t-”

Before I could finish he put a pale finger to my lips. “Shh, don’t say that. I know this whole thing will take some getting used to but we have our whole life ahead of us! If you don’t love me now surely it will come later.”

I sighed and closed my eyes. There was no point in trying anymore. Jeremiah was just too far gone that no matter what I said he wouldn’t change his mind. “It’s almost time for the ceremony, my love. But before I go I have something for you.”

Reaching into his blue jacket pocket, Jeremiah held up a silver chain necklace with a pendant on the end. Sadness reflected onto my soul as I instantly recognized what it was.

{Flashback}

“Miah, come on! Let me open my eyes!”

“Just wait a second.”

I playfully sighed. Jeremiah had called me down to the bunker for some unknown reason and I was hoping it wasn’t because he was in danger. My bad thoughts were removed when I walked into his study, the area decorated with birthday decorations. According to my ginger friend he was upset that he had missed my special day so he and Ecco arranged to have a small party with just the two of them. I will admit it was sweet of them to think of me but they didn’t have to go through with all of the trouble. Currently I sat on a couch with my hands over my eyes, footsteps rustling in the background. “Okay, you can open them.”

I did so and saw he held a small box with a green bow wrapped around it. “Miah, you didn’t have to get me anything!”

“I know but I wanted to stick to customs.”

I sighed and took the box from him, pulling off the bow and opening it. I gasped. Inside lay a simple silver necklace, a blueish green pendant on it. “M-Miah, it’s-it’s beautiful! Oh thank you!”

I got up and hugged him. “No problem, Y/n. I’m just glad you like it.”

“Could you help me put it on?”

“Of course.”

I spun around and moved my hair out of the way so he could clip it. It took him a second or two but as soon as he got it I turned towards him. “So, what do you think?”

I gave him a big smile as I posed with it, my friend not saying anything. After a few moments he shook his head and smiled. “I think it looks perfect.”

{End Flashback}

“This should complete your look.”

He came behind me and pushed my hair and veil out of the way so he could clasp it together. I felt my heart lock up as the cool metal dropped to my neck, it seemingly sealing my fate. “It looks just as perfect as it did all those months ago.”

I wanted to cry, scream, do anything. Everything was tumbling down for me. “See you out there, dearest.”

Quickly he pecked my cheek and left me to my own devices. Quietly I turned back towards the mirror and looked at myself. My reflection looked back at me with sadness in her eyes and in that moment I could see the cage that surrounded me, the one that no matter how lovely I sang or flew about the owner wasn’t going to be unlocking any time soon. Taking a deep breath I turned away and walked through the door, Ecco waiting for me outside. She handed me a bouquet of red roses before gently taking my arm and leading me down the hall to a pair of closed doors. My stomach twisted as I bit my trembling lip, nerves fluttering throughout my system. Suddenly the doors flew open and an organ began playing the infamous bridal processional tune as the dirty blonde woman led me down the aisle, her swaying us back and forth. My eyes scanned the room and I couldn’t stop the gasp that escaped my mouth. Sitting in the pews tied up and gagged was Alfred, Jim, Barbara, Harvey and Bruce, all of them dressed nice and fancy. Before I could go to them Ecco tightened her grip on my arm and pushed me forwards, Jeremiah catching me. Pulling me up to his level the madman gave me a huge grin before nodding to the pastor who looked like he was about to faint. The poor man flipped through his Bible in a nervous manner while mumbling to himself as Jeremiah gave him a glare. “Could we hurry this up a little?”

“U-um..of course, M-Mr. Valeska-a.W-We are gathered h-here today to join these t-two in h-holy matrimony-y. If there are any objections p-please say n-n-now.”

I looked back at my captive friends, all of them trying to say something. I looked over at the organist only to find a person holding a gun to their head. Suddenly my head was brought roughly back to look at Jeremiah, his pale fingers digging into my cheeks and chin. “Eyes up here, darling.” he hissed.

I gulped and he let go, his hands wrapping around mine in a tight grip. “Continue, Father.”

“D-do you pledge your lives t-to one a-another, to w-watch over the o-other in bad t-times? Do y-you promise to l-love each other-r tenderly-y and p-passionately, care for one another and c-cherish each moment?”

I wasn’t about to reply but I felt a gun pointed at the back of my skull so I changed my answer. “We do.”

“Do we have the rings?”

Jeremiah nodded and a random minion scurried off, returning with Selina’s corpse on a dolly holding the rings. I took in a shaky breath and watched as the minion made it seem like Selina was giving us the pieces of jewelry, her hand cold against mine. “R-repeat after me, Mr. V-Valeska. I Jeremiah p-promise to h-have and to h-hold this w-woman I take on as my w-wife. I p-promise to l-love and cherish her e-each day, for better or for worse, for richer, poorer, in sickness and in health till death do we part.”

My groom did as he was told, his blue eyes staring down into my soul and a big grin stretched across his lips. “W-with this ring I-I thee w-wed.”

Jeremiah slipped the gold band onto my ring finger, the blue jewel glinting in the candlelight. A perfect fit.

“Now repeat after me, Miss L-L/n. I Y/n p-promise to h-have and to h-hold this m-man I take on as my h-husband. I p-promise to l-love and cherish him e-each day, for better or for worse, for richer, poorer, in sickness and in health till death do we part.”

“Jeremiah, you don’t have to do this. Let all these poor people go!”

“I can’t do that, sweetheart. We need witnesses. Now, say your vows.”

My eyes searched for any remaining humanity in my former ginger friend’s but his grip on my hands tightened and a shadow passed over his blue orbs. “Say. Them.”

I looked over at my friends but I heard the gun cock behind me so I returned back to home base, repeating every word in a trembling voice. “With t-this ring I thee w-wed.”

Silently I slid my gold band onto his ring finger, his having an e/c stone in the center. “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may now kiss the bride.”

Quickly Jeremiah leaned and captured my lips, Ecco the only one clapping. Everything faded into white noise as I stood there enveloped in the madman’s grip.

This is it.

Beep.

You’re trapped forever.

Beep.

No longer will you be able to be with Bruce.

Beep.

You’ll just be a caged bird for the rest of your life.

Beep.

Living your days as a cooped up housewife.

Beep.

There’s no escape...Y/n Valeska.

My newly appointed husband pulled away by a few inches, his breath hot against my lips. We stared at each other in the heat of the moment as Ecco pranced about us throwing flower petals. I was numb as Jeremiah leaned down again and kissed me, his excitement and bliss not reaching my body. “Hurray, Boss! You did it! Congratulations you two!”

As Ecco continued her excited chant Jeremiah pulled away and held me close. I felt a few tears fall as my friend’s disappointment clouded my mind, them struggling in the background. “Come now, Ecco! Let’s take the celebrations elsewhere.”

Jeremiah gently took my hand and led me back down the aisle, him turning back to his minions. “The rest of you kill and destroy.”

“NO!”

I screamed as gunfire rang out and smoke piled into the church, the greenette casually walking us down the aisle as if nothing was wrong. In an attempt to get away I hit my husband several times but he just continued dragging me along. I looked back desperately at my friends who tried to get away, my eyes landing on Bruce. Time seemed to slow as I stared into those dark eyes and memories of my happiness came back to me in waves.

Bedside chats.

Embraces.

Laughter.

Dinners together.

Our kiss.

“BRUCE!” I shrieked at the top of my lungs. Don’t let me go.

I heard Jeremiah growl and turn towards the dark haired male, a smirk on his face. “I did it, Bruce! I won! Y/n’s mine!”

He chuckled and raced us out the door, I screaming my true love's name. Suddenly I was thrust into the backseat of a car, it speeding off with Ecco as the driver. My heart beeped in my chest as the two clown’s laughter filled my ears, my body getting hot in my dress. The night sky seemed to twirl as I felt my back collide with seat, my eyes closing. Bruce…

I don’t know how long I was out for but when I woke up I was lying on a couch with Ecco standing over me. She smiled upon realizing I was awake and helped me sit up, my surroundings new and unrecognizable. “W-where are we?”

“Your new home, Y/n! Boss has been looking forever for the perfect place and now here we are!”

I blinked a few times and looked around. The room I was in seemed to be a living room as there were several chairs strewn about and a few picture frames up. The fireplace was currently burning some wood making the room nice and toasty. “Well we better get you upstairs. Mr. J has been waiting for you to wake up.”

Gently, Ecco eased me up off the couch and up the stairs across the hall, stopping us at a door at the end of the right hallway. She opened the door and led me inside, a fire dancing in the center of the far wall mantle. “Boss told me to get you ready for when he comes back and that he’s sorry for leaving you in such a hurry. I guess some business came up that he needed to take care of.”

Delicately she removed the veil from my head and placed it on an armchair in the corner before going to a dresser and pulling out a green nightgown. She returned to my side and helped me out of my dress before slipping the pajamas over my head, onto my body. Humming she picked up my wedding dress and set it over by the veil, returning to me with a hairbrush in hand. She had me sit on a footstool as she sat behind me, tenderly brushing my locks. “We’re all going to be one big happy family after tonight. If something should happen in that body of yours Mr. J will be pleased.”

I froze. I forgot about that part of weddings. My fingers dug into my legs creating marks. As if on cue Jeremiah strode through the door with a smile upon his face. Ecco stood and curtsied, making her way out and shutting the door behind her. I gulped and turned away, flinching when I felt his arms wrap around me. His nose tickled my neck as he gave a content purr, my body shaking at the thought of what was next. “You’re finally all mine, Y/n. No longer will I have to worry about someone stealing you away.”

His hand reached up and slid one of the straps down on my shoulder, I clutching his wrist tightly. “Please don’t.”

“Dearest, you don’t know how long I’ve been waiting for this moment. Imagine how much more happier we could be if you gave birth.”

“I don’t want to! Please, Jeremiah!”

“Shh. You’ll be alright. Everything will be alright.”

I cringed as the other strap fell and I knew instantly that tonight was going to be a long one.

“Now...let’s have our date with destiny.”

!!!!! an interested person???? hi anon i love you know that i would die for you without hesitation. bless you for letting me gush over my aus. this might be a lil messy (and long holy shit) considering im answering from my phone but from memory here are my aus (which i aint gonna lie are mostly either angst, hurt/comfort or canon divergent, or a mix of the three) in no particular order:

heads up in literally none of my aus is midoriya hisashi a good parent. i mean in canon we know exactly three details about him being his name, his quirk and that he works abroad. that’s it. so, i don’t really like “good parent hisashi”. this au is basically ‘hey what if izuku got a fire quirk from his dad’ combined with my own personal views on fire, and then also deciding ‘wait what if hisashi and endevor did the same shit’. so it’s basically an au where izuku is in the same situation as todoroki.

it’s….kind of complicated now that it’s written down. in my head its p straight forwards?? anyways, basically my view on fire is that it absolutely shouldn’t be demonized as much as it is. because without fire, life couldn’t exist. it’s warmth and life and beauty. i just…think that view of it is perfect for izuku, and i always wanted to try my hand at fire quirk izuku.

also one of my few aus that’s actually gonna have a ship focus?? in that it’s tododeku but honestly knowing me i might end up accidentally dropping that aspect of it like i tend to do a LOT bc of my inability to write crushes (im an aro who’s never had a crush so me writing romance is…awkward at best lol)

the one where hisashi is a villain

i have……admittedly a lot of versions of this au. it’s by far one of my favourites to think about, for several reasons actually, mostly bc of angst but also because the hurt/comfort potential there is incredible.

my most current version of this au though plays with the idea that in the mha society those with ‘villainous’ quirks get discrimated against and pushed so the only chance they do have to survive is to turn to villainy. in this au i play with hisashi and inko’s quirks a little to make them more villainous and easier to discriminate against, for example hisashi can cremate anything he touches into ashes at will, and inko can minorly manipulate the limbs of other people although she’s mainly limited to pulling them towards her or pushing them back.

in this version, izuku is quirkless and still goes through ua determined to change the way that society works and right the wrongs in how it’s set up while also proving that quirkless people aren’t useless. a lot of dadzawa in this one because it is my w e a k n e s s. there’s a few other elements thrown in there, but overall that’s the basic jist of it.

underground gladiator arena kidnap fic

one of my darker aus where a group of villains kidnap kids who took the ua exam to create an “everything goes” fight club that customers can watch and occasionally participate in.

my general idea for this was “the sports festival is pretty brutal when you think about it. it’s almost like everything but killing goes” and then i thought that in a superpowered society there is no way there isn’t any kind of underground fight club where people can go full out w their quirks.

hence this au was born! the kids who’re kidnapped w izuku have been constantly changing over the ladt year or so that i’ve had this idea but rn i decided on having shinsou, kaminari, mina, tokoyami and yaoyorozu w him. the rest would be filled w ocs bc the villains weren’t dumb enough to kidnap all of the heroics students, just a handful.

bearing in mind the kids are all taken a couple days after the entrance exam so they’re not familiar with each other and izuku is the only one familiar w a pro hero and that’s a secret. not to mention he’s only used his quirk once at this point, and he has no access to recovery girl’s quirk so he has to figure smth out IMMEDIATELY or he’s completely fucked.

the one where aizawa is inko’s brother

look if you inspect my aus carefully you’ll see a theme and that theme is i fucking love aizawa. anyways, in this one izuku has a pretty powerful nullification quirk and is trained by aizawa. aizawa and inko have like an eight or ten year age difference, so they weren’t all that close until inko reached out when izuku was eight.

i’ll admit this is one of my lesser developed aus but it’s canon divergent with a focus on izuku hoping to be an underground hero. and due to his quirk and that aspect of his personality, it kind of changes a lot of things??? potentially a short(ish) au if i ever got round to writing it out. maybs about 20k-30k words idk.

(this is mostly born bc i feel like people forget that there’s only a fifteen year age difference between aizawa and izuku for a number of reasons. also bc inko/aizawa….is kind of weird in my mind. definitely not a fan :///)

MUTE TODOROKI

look i fucking love mute aus okay, but when i was trying to apply it to the mha universe i started thinking “holy shit todoroki could definitely be mute” or smth and ever since this au is close to my heart.

basically when poor rei burned lil shouto, she mentally scarred him into mutism. ever since the kettle incident, shouto can’t speak a word. endeavor is told by the doctor that although nothing physically is wrong, shouto is mute. endeavor is a DICK and p much decides he’ll just wait it out for shouto to finally talk bc he’s just being childish (basically he’s ablist and doesn’t let todoroki learn sign. which is bullshit but doesn’t majorly effect him bc he’s homeschooled until high school anyway).

it’s sort of canon divergent but also maybe a complete au??? in that there’s no league of villains. when all might fought afo the first time he succeeded in putting a stop to the villain and killing him. izuku still gets ofa, but he’s not the protag of the story, this time it’s todoroki.

anyways, ua sees that todoroki is mute (which isn’t registered and completely unknown to the general public) and doesn’t know sign language (resorting to notes and/or charades if he needs to communicate something), and decides to investigate that shit.

endeavor eventually gets what he deserves bc the trash bag can go rot in hell, and that’s p much all i got aside from the class realising FAST they need to adopt and love todoroki so there’s a lot of wholesome bonding there.

izuku is related to all for one

admittedly this one is one of my most underdeveloped aus but i still love it all the same. basically my take on it bc the whole ‘afo is hisashi’ thing kinda weirds me out considering afo is at least 200 years old. in this au he’s izuku’s grandfather and inko is his daugther who escaped him and lives in hiding.

i haven’t decided whether i want this au to be my take on izuku having afo or if it’s another quirkless izuku au. i haven’t gotten very far into it, all i know is that afo has no emotions and he’s a heartless bastard (me hating the dad for one trope w a passion) so there’s sort of MAJOR angst potential if i decide to go down that route.

gamer au

izuku’s quirk is that his life is a game. that’s….that’s it. if you’re familiar with sword art online, it has a lot of influence from that w/o the characters or plot or pervertedness or incest because what the fuck sao was so bad with all those. still pissed bc outside that it had potential and i think abt that a lot.

anyways, so y’know how in a lot of rpgs there’s the hud w stats and an inventory system and abilities?? well apply that to izuku and he’s p much that. the world “autosaves” whenever he sleeps, but he can’t manually load a save. if he dies he starts over from his last autosave.

bc of his access to abilities and stuff, he has the potential to be powerful bc hey he can basically do magic, but at the same time he just healed his body completely by drinking this drink he made w herbs and shit last night. also he can carry a ludicrous amount of shit that couldn’t possible fit in his backpack but apparently he’s got seventeen cheese wheels in there and room for half the classroom furniture too.

izuku sees the world w a hud which would be annoying but it’s normal for izuku. in fact, he sort of hates watching tv because the hud doesn’t appear on the screen and it’s so weird and bizarre he doesn’t really like it.

i haven’t planned anything but details of the quirk bc it can get waaaay too overpowered too quickly and hhhh i sort of burnt out of different ways this would effect canon, so i didn’t think abt it. but i did figure out that izuku would have so many gaming analogies for his friends and be into like a thousand different games.

the one where uraraka is the protag instead

born when i was complaining about how shitty horikoshi is at writing his female characters i brainstormed this au in a discord server where i overhauled canon w a more badass uraraka. (and she doesn’t even get ofa!!! she’s just badass on her own!!!)

basically bc she’s a lot more confident and determined in this au she influences a lot of her classmates. the other girls are a lot more active in their actions and are more than just the background characters. uraraka’s full strength is explored and i think i planned for her to win the sports festival bc she deserved it.

also inspired by the idea i had of pro hero uraraka kicking a lamp post down on her own strength and using it to put a comet home run on a villain like she did in the battle trial. bc holy shit that’s a fantastic mental image.

basically my “mha girls fucking rule and fuck horikoshi’s shitty writing” au

hp au

ah yes, finally we get to my take on the most generic of aus. basically i just wanted todoroki in hufflepuff to piss off endeavor and basically loving it bc he befriends izuku in it. i definitely haven’t developed this au outside of worldbuilding in how i’d combine the two universes whilst fixing both jkr and horikoshi’s bad writing.

i actually wrote a snippet that’s somewhere on my blog that i can’t link to now but you could probs for search it. but this was basically born from me getting angry at people putting the kids in the wrong houses. im a firm believer that izuku fits in nearly every house but hufflepuff and slytherin suits him the most while todoroki is ABSOLUTELY a hufflepuff. i wanted some platonic tododeku bonding so i put izuku in hufflepuff. uraraka is slytherin, iida is gryffindor, and it’d be too messy to list all the kids so i won’t.

but!! what im most happy w in this au is how i incoporate mha stuff into it. like how hagakure isn’t actually invisible she just got permanently hexed by her brother to always be unnoticed so you can never know what she looks like or where she is. tokoyami has a bird head due to a failed attempt at becoming an animagi. its permanent and although he could get it fixed, theres actually a number of wizards w the same thing do there’s a lot of animal like wizards. shinhou comes from a pureblood family thats been known for their dark magic, even though the last four generations haven’t been dark wizards the wizardinv world is convinced he’ll be a dark wizard too but shinsou wants to prove them wrong. amajiki being a metamorphmagus who shifts his limbs into animals when he’s nervous. etc etc. i have too much worldbuilding and no plot lmao.

disney aus galore

one day i thought up abt three different disney aus for the mha universe but my first idea was a little mermaid au for momojirou w momo being the princess and jirou being the mermaid.

except besides the basic premise i p much scrapped the whole movie in that jirou learns sign language to talk to momo and the two play music together. jirou plays piano or w/e whilst momo sings. it’s v gay. theres a ball and they dance and then kiss. i never wrote it out bc i didn’t wanna add conflict in it but never got round to actually writing it lmao.

but i thought up a tododeku tangled au, kiribaku cinderella au, tsuocha princess and the frog au, and a couple others that i didn’t plan out fully. still close to my heart if i ever manage to get round to writing them out. each would probs either be a long shot at 7k-15k words or a short multichapter fic at 25k-30k words.

the Spite™️ fic

the fic where i get pissed at every shitty thing about horikoshi’s writing. izuku gets mad at all might for his views on quirkless people and gets into ua on his first try. izuku rightfully does not take bakugou’s shit and calls him out at every opportunity. bakugou’s actions have repercussions. all might gets punished for almost letting bakugou kill izuku in an exercise.

The introduction of Social.Me shifted the balance, not just of the internet, but the ideal of globalization. All of a sudden, people around the world were connected at the touch of a button. A doctor in Tehran could diagnose a patient in Dublin, a teacher at the Parthenon could lecture to her students in Hartford. A person's entire life: dating history, relationship goals, affiliations, videos, pictures, rumors and more, all contained on one wall, summarized by one hashtag. On the homepage of Social.Me, you can find a list that proudly boasts the number of marriages facilitated by the social media platform, the families that have been reconnected, the lost people that have been found by the helpful hand of the world wide web. A button uses a random algorithm to take users to a new heartwarming story with every click of the refresh button.

But there is danger in that much power.

Countless new studies are produced daily on the detrimental effects of Social.Me on a person's self-worth, largely due to the reputation system: a rating scale voted on by anyone in the world that analyzes an individual's online social capital. The alarming new trend of employers requesting candidates' reputation certainly hasn't helped.

And then there are the whispers. Anything can be posted about anyone, with no limitation or moderation. Any hopes of litigation on account of libel are bleak. The rise of Social.Me pages dedicated to community gossip has succeeded in making large cities feel quite small, and turning unknown individuals into reluctant celebrities overnight.

Thanks to Social.Me, the world seems much smaller now, bringing people together in ways more intimate than could ever be imagined. However, there are two sides to every coin. While the world is made smaller by the connectivity fostered by Social.Me, there is so much more room for danger. You never know who is lurking on your profile.

You never know who is watching through the screen.

Who do masks protect: the wearer or other people?

Masks principally protect other people, not the wearer. Coronavirus is spread by respiratory droplets from an infected person. If you wear a mask, you are less likely to spread the virus when you cough, sneeze or talk, and less likely to leave germs on surfaces. As the saying goes: “Your mask protects me, my mask protects you.”

How do I make a face mask at home? Has the Canadian government provided instructions?

Do-it-yourself cloth face masks can be made fairly simply. You don’t need to be a couturier. The Public Health Agency provides instructions for making three variety of masks: One that requires fabric and sewing; using an old T-shirt and no sewing; and a bandana-style mask.

Are masks with valves better?

While valves make a mask look more sophisticated, they are actually worse than a cloth mask. The filter – which often isn’t medical grade – filters air coming in but usually allows you to exhale unfiltered air. In other words, it doesn’t protect those around you. If you’re doing renovations and don’t want to breathe in sawdust, wear a filtered mask; if you’re going shopping, wear a cloth mask.

Because there are so many variations of homemade fabric masks, do face shields offer better protection?

There are advantages and disadvantages to face shields. They tend to be more comfortable, and are more easily cleaned, but are more expensive than masks. Shields also allow us to see a person’s facial expressions and lip movements, which is particularly important for people who are hearing-impaired. Cloth masks do not filter 100 per cent of the virus so, theoretically, a hard shield would be more effective. However, there is no definitive research demonstrating superiority. Like masks, face shields must be worn properly to be effective. A mask needs to cover the mouth and nose completely, and be snug. A shield needs to extend from the forehead to below the chin. And whatever face covering you use, it must be cleaned regularly.

Where do I buy a mask?

It is virtually impossible to go on social media and not be bombarded by advertisements for companies selling masks, everything from designer brands on down. Because you can’t try them on, you risk purchasing something that’s uncomfortable or ill-fitting. Masks can also be expensive - $25 or more for piece of cloth with an elastic. The DIY ones work just as well and, with some fiddling you can custom fit your mask(s).

What do experts think about mandatory universal masking in public places?

There is a growing scientific and political consensus that wearing a mask is desirable in health care settings, on public transit, grocery stores, restaurants, shopping centres and other crowded places with poor ventilation. Doing so is recommended by public health officials and, as the economy opens up, many stores are making face-covering a condition of entering. Masks are mandatory in 31 U.S. states and a number of European and Asian countries. So far, there is no indication the federal or provincial governments intend to make masks mandatory. It is seen more an act of civic engagement than a legal obligation.

How can masks be required when they just aren’t available and why does the government not provide masks for everyone?

Well, businesses can require you to wear shoes and a shirt, and they don’t have to provide those. Increasingly, masks are becoming a standard part of our wardrobe. We can expect workplaces to supply them to employees if they are mandatory. Governments are also getting in on the act. Alberta, for example, is going to make 20 million masks available free in a partnership with fast-food stores that have drive-thrus.

The second wave and reopening

When do nail salons open back up? When do churches reopen? (What guidelines are needed, what criteria must be met?)

Nail salons, hairdressers, barbers and other esthetic services are beginning to re-open in some provinces, but the exact timing varies widely across the country. The experience is likely going to be very different than pre-pandemic.

Obviously, maintaining a two-metre distance is impossible if you are getting your nails done or hair styled. So masks will be de rigeur, for employees and customers. Appointment times will be more precise to avoid congregation in waiting areas. Larger gatherings like church are a whole other matter. Most provinces still have rules and regulations that limit gathers to anywhere between five and 50 people, and they have to maintain physical distancing of two metres. So, in theory, a small religious service with congregants may be possible in the coming weeks but probably won’t be allowed until after summer. And remember, public health officials are looking to the fall with trepidation; if there is a second wave of Covid-19 infections, even smaller gathering will likely be off-limits again.

Now that housekeepers are allowed in our homes in Ontario, is it safe for a cleaner to come if she takes public transportation?

The over-arching philosophy of physical distancing is that you want to minimize your contact with other people – especially those who interact with many others. Ideally, with your cleaner, whether they take the bus or not, you should try and get out of the house or isolate in one room.

What is the expected source of the second wave of the virus as we open things up?

The public health measures taken to date are designed to slow the spread of coronavirus and they are working. However, there are still an unknown number of people in the community who are infected. The more we open up the economy, the greater the risk of those people infecting others. The analogy that is often used is that there are embers in the forest and, with the right conditions, they could grow into a fire.

The fear is that, in the fall, when we start spending more time indoors, and the regular soup of respiratory viruses like colds and flu take hold, it will create ideal conditions for the coronavirus to spread widely again. Historians warn that, during the 1918-19 influenza pandemic, the second wave was much more deadly than the first, in large part because people were more complacent.

Testing and coronavirus antibodies

Who can get tested? And where?

Most provinces have assessment and testing centres and some even have mobile clinics. (The locations are on public health websites, or you can call 811.) The rules about who can be tested differ a bit depending on which province you live in but, essentially, anyone who has symptoms of COVID-19 can and should be tested. In the hardest hit provinces, Quebec and Ontario, there are also “targeted campaigns” in community hot spots, and among high-risk groups like frontline health care workers, residents of long-term care homes, shelter residents, jail guards and inmates, farm workers and some retail workers. While there are calls for “everyone” to be tested it’s worth remembering that current tests do a poor job of detecting asymptomatic cases (people who are infected but have few symptoms.)

Once you’ve had coronavirus, are you immune?

In theory, once a person is infected and recovers, they should develop antibodies that make them immune to reinfection. However, with coronavirus, there are many unanswered questions about how immunity develops, how strong it is and how long it lasts.

When can Canada expect to have a comprehensive antibody testing strategy?

Canada has created a COVID-19 Immunity Task Force to develop a testing strategy. One of the priorities will be trying to figure out how many people in the general population have actually been infected because, in theory, everyone without immunity is at risk of infection.

When can we expect to see routine testing of people for COVID-19 antibodies or the virus itself?

In some jurisdictions – for example in German schools – testing for coronavirus is are already being done broadly to try and ensure the infected are caught quickly. At this point, antibodies testing done largely to get a sense of how widely the virus has circulated in the community. But the technology is not good enough yet to, for example, grant ‘immunity passports’ to some knowing they will not be reinfected. (There are also legal/ethical issue with the passport approach.)

What is coronavirus?

The new illness that emerged last December in China – officially called COVID-19 – is caused by a coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2. Coronaviruses are a family of viruses that cause respiratory infections ranging from the common cold to more severe diseases. The coronavirus that is making global headlines, SARS-CoV-2, is “novel” because it has never been seen in humans, meaning everyone is susceptible to infection.

COVID-19 has a higher mortality rate than the flu: About 3.4 per cent by recent estimates, which is lower than SARS (10 per cent) but much higher than seasonal influenza (0.1 per cent).

On average, it takes about five days for people infected with COVID-19 to show symptoms, according to a U.S.-based team’s estimates published in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The incubation period for SARS was much longer, about 10 days.

In recent years, we have seen two other novel coronaviruses emerge – Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) in 2003 and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2012. There are four other coronaviruses that circulate routinely – OC43, 229E, HKU1, NL63 – which generally cause colds.

How is it different from other viruses?

What are the symptoms?

The coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 can cause an illness known as COVID-19. The symptoms include fever and dry cough.

Unlike a common cold, people with COVID-19 generally do not have a runny nose or a sore throat.

According to a large study in China, the vast majority of those infected with the novel coronavirus:

81 per cent of patients have mild symptoms

14 per cent of patients had severe symptoms, including trouble breathing

Just under 5 per cent of patients suffered critical illness, meaning they needed to be on a respirator

It is not yet clear how deadly COVID-19 is because many mild cases have likely gone undetected. The treatment is the same – you treat the symptoms with fever-reducing medication such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) and bed rest. You should not treat fever with ASA-based painkillers such as Aspirin, especially in children. Antibiotics do not help; they only work for bacterial illnesses.

How long can an asymptomatic carrier spread the virus?

An asymptomatic carrier is someone who is infected with coronavirus but has no obvious symptoms. It’s not clear how long they are infectious, but likely 2-14 days, which is the incubation period for the virus. Remember though is that the sicker someone is, the more likely they are to spread the illness to others. An asymptomatic carrier can infect others, but there is far less virus in their body to shed. So, most important, is to avoid those who are sick and for sick people to stay home and out of the public.

What is the coronavirus recovery rate?

There are a couple of ways of answering that question. In Canada, a little under one per cent of people known to have been infected with coronavirus have died of COVID-19, so you can say that 99 per cent have survived. Of the roughly 90,000 confirmed cases, almost 50,000 have officially been declared “recovered” – meaning they have undergone treatment and/or isolation and no longer test positive for the virus. That’s a 55 per cent recovery rate. Beyond the statistics, it is important to remember that recovery varies tremendously. Some people have a mild illness and are fine afterwards, as if they had a cold. But a significant minority of those infected with coronavirus – even young, healthy people - have severe and long-lasting symptoms. Some may suffer permanent damage to their lungs, hearts and kidneys. Furthermore, it’s not clear why some patients get so much sicker than others.

When will we be able to say coronavirus is “over”?

The World Health Organization declared coronavirus to be a pandemic on March 15. At some point – and that could be a couple of years from now – it will be declared “over.” This happens essentially when a disease has run its course and there are only sporadic cases or no cases, or when the disease becomes endemic.

How does it spread?

You’re quite right, getting detailed data from some provinces (like Ontario) is like pulling teeth but, increasingly, researchers and the media are collecting and analyzing data independently. A recent Globe and Mail analysis found that 32 per cent of cases are currently occurring in congregate settings and the balance, 68 per cent, are happening in the community. Where exactly, we’re not sure, but it looks like they are mostly happening in low-income neighborhoods (where people tend to live in crowded conditions in high-rises that make physical distancing near-impossible) and in workplaces like warehouses and manufacturing plants where employees toil in close proximity. There is no set number of times you should wash your hands. Rather, it depends on your activities.

Contrary to popular belief, flying itself is not that risky. There are few documented cases of passenger-to-passenger coronavirus infections. The air on planes is filtered, passengers sit facing forward with barriers (seat backs) between them, and don’t circulate that much. Most airlines have sharply increased cleaning and made masks mandatory. Some have stopped selling middle seats, and suspended food service, though those measures are unlikely to last.

Navigating the airport is the challenging part of the journey because you encounter a lot of people and, unlike your fellow passengers, they can’t easily be tracked down. Airports are re-jigging to try and minimize contacts between people but that won’t make travelling any more pleasant. For example, some airports have already removed seats at gates.

As for international travel, it’s still happening, but most airlines have dramatically cut back flights. For the most part, travel is not banned but it is strongly advised that you don’t travel unless it’s “essential” – which means different things to different people. Individuals have to make personal choices based on their own risk tolerance. Aggressive physical distancing is wise and total isolation probably a good idea, if you can tolerate it.

Some people will not heed the public health pleas to practice physical distancing. If that is the case, like your mom, try and preach harm reduction. If she’s going to shop do it when the risk is lesser, when stores are less crowded – morning rather than just before dinner. Some stores, like Shopper’s Drug Mart, have set aside special hours for high-risk people, such as seniors. Finally, there are a lot of Good Samaritans offering to shop for their cooped-up neighbors, and maybe your mom would accept one of those offers.

How is coronavirus treated?

There is no specific treatment for COVID-19. Only the symptoms can be treated. If you have mild symptoms such as a cough and fever, then you need rest, plenty of fluids and maybe Bubbe’s chicken soup. Fever can be treated with medications such as acetaminophen (Tylenol) or NSAIDs like ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), but you should not treat fever with ASA-based painkillers such as Aspirin, especially in children. The French health minister (who is also doctor) has said that NSAIDs can worsen symptoms but, according to pharmacologist Dr. David Juurlink that claim “is not based on very much.”

Antibiotics do not help; they only work for bacterial illnesses. There are no licensed antivirals for COVID-19 but one drug, Remdesivir, is being studied and used experimentally. In more serious cases, COVID-19 patients may develop pneumonia (inflammation or fluid build-up in the lungs) and a physician may prescribe steroids. In the most severe cases, people can develop acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and require breathing support, a ventilator or ECMO (extracorporeal machine oxygenation). ARDS is what kills.

That numbers is based on the incubation period of the virus – the time between catching the virus and beginning to have symptoms of the disease. Most estimates of the incubation period for COVID-19 range from one to 14 days, most commonly around five. In other words, while multiple companies have vaccine candidates under study, a vaccine is not going to stop the pandemic spread of the disease – a least not in 2020. The best approach in the short-term is tried and true public health measures to try and limit spread and developing better treatments for those who are sick. One drug, remdesivir, has shown promise against other coronaviruses and, anecdotally, has worked well for some COVID-19 patients. Drug-maker Gilead is ramping up testing.

Will the coronavirus vaccine be mandatory?

A vaccine is a long way off – probably a year or two if scientists are able to develop one so there is a lot of time to have this discussion/debate. “Earth to _____?”

The vibrating chatter of Sunrise patrons hummed against your skin, lulling you into some state of hypnosis as you pressed a cup of coffee down into the machine. Your eyes were stuck open, staring blankly across at the posters on the brick-styled wall. Fatigue weighed heavily down on your shoulders, a stark reminder that for the past weeks you’d spent your time during the night doing the opposite of sleeping- a bad choice on your part, and you knew it. With heavy eyelids, you forced a long, drawn out blink, tethering yourself back down to the present.

“Sorry,” you pushed out a laugh and foamed the top of the drink, sheepishly gazing sideways at a coworker. Taehyung stared at you curiously and took the drink from your shaking fingers, which he too eyed suspiciously, then called out the customer’s name.

“You sure you’re alright?” Taehyung muttered as he walked around your back, letting his sights travel over your rolled jeans and loose-fitting t-shirt. There were no signs of you being hurt anywhere, and he pursed his lips in part worry, part confusion.

You moved to look at the next given order, forcing yourself to look him in the eye. “Yeah, Tae,” you reassured him, “I think I did too much coke last night, though.”

Taehyung snorted. You grinned sneakily at him, and began to press another cup of coffee down once again.

“You can tell me,” Taehyung announced sideways at you as he handed a customer back her cash. The woman smiled softly at him and dropped change into one of the two jars: one reading ‘Mario’ and the other reading ‘Luigi’. The cups changed tip names once a day, depending on whoever was working. Sometimes it was Hamlet vs. Caesar, Jackson vs. Jefferson, etcetera.

You slid the next mug onto the counter and called out the name. The first syllable rolled off your tongue before it hit you- who the name belonged to. Raising your eyebrows, you felt your stomach clench with nervousness, eyes wide and surprised as you looked across the room.

Seated by the decorative board with lists of ads probably decades old was none other than Jungkook. He was still wearing that God forsaken boyfriend-esque outfit, but now there was a beanie pulling his hair back from his face, allowing those curious brown eyes to roam over the posters. The midday sunlight was streaming in through the glass wall, illuminating his tan skin with an angelic haze that made you want to choke the life out of him. And although your fingers twitched to punch his stupidly handsome face, his profile struck a chord within you, reminding you of a time much simpler than this one.

The living room was cold and smelt of pizza and wings, both of which had occupied ample space on the coffee table by your chest. Cross-legged and dressed in only a lengthy, long t-shirt, you chewed at your third slice of pizza ravenously. Beside you, Jungkook watched you out of the corner of his eye, smiling softly to himself when he spotted the smear of barbeque sauce on your cheek.

“That’sh sho dumb,” you huffed, angrily staring at the television. Jungkook felt his smile turn into an amused grin. You swallowed, and for a moment he thought you would (for once) speak with your mouth empty- at least, until, you tore another piece of chicken off and continued. “Why can’t Leshlie mm Ben jusht dade?”

Jungkook glanced at the show, where two characters sadly stared at each other across a table, then back to you. He couldn’t help but admire you like this- no makeup, hair a mess and tied back so you could eat easily, his shirt and underwear on. You were a vision with or without looking like this, but he always had a thing for unknown beauty. And while you were confident, you couldn’t have possibly known the things your smile did to him.

You felt his stare burning a hole into your cheek. Glancing at him oddly out of the corner of your eye, you turned to look at him, finally swallowing. “What?” You demanded, confused. “Something on my face?”

Jungkook tilted his head to the side, smiling. You furrowed your eyebrows and reached up to wipe your face clean, but his hand shot outwards and caught your wrist before you could. “Yeah,” he lowered your hand, though his other one came around to wipe the sauce off. Your cheek pushed against his fingers, soft and warm and brightening at his touch.

He stared at your wide, surprised eyes. Although the two of you had been messing around for a month now (he was counting), you still were always delightfully shocked at his actions. Your blush and that bashful look you got was his favorite of your expressions- well, that and your happy one… and your mad one… actually, all of them were his favorite.

You blinked, gulping. Jungkook leaned forwards on natural instinct, unable to stop himself from feathering his lips against your cheek. Your chest expanded with something indescribable at the gentle gesture, a stark difference from how he’d been only just an hour ago. You remembered the way he looked at you from above you, how he held onto your waist tightly and roughly and panted your name into your shoulder.

Something warm and soft found your lips. You melted into Jungkook’s touch as you always had, hands moving up to cup his jaw, feeling the structure beneath your palm. Your mouth felt as if it had lit up, eyes closed and everything dark, but your lips were neon red, pulsing in the absence of light like a beacon. Wherever he touched you was vibrant yellow, glowing against the color of your skin, a mental map outlining the dance of his fingers.

And oh, his fingers….

You blinked, jerking yourself back to the then and now.

Jungkook jumped to his feet. For a moment, you felt excited- here he was, the boy you tended to obsess over, walking towards you, about to speak to you- but that feeling shattered at the now visible sight of a blonde sitting across from him. Disappointment felt onto your chest, weighing you down against the tile floors. She looked too perfect seated there, with her hair immaculately straight and her eyes a dazzling hue of emerald. If you were Jungkook, you’d probably be with her instead of you, too.

“Hey,” Jungkook’s pink lips curved into that annoying smile of his. His eyes scrunched up as he reached for the drink, fingers curling around the handle of the mug. He glanced down at the foam design you made out of boredom- a generic, tiny little emblem of a flower. His heart grew warm at the sight of it.

You reminded yourself to breathe and forced your gaze away, “Hi.”

He wasn’t an idiot, and you knew that he knew you were avoiding him. The disappointed look on his face said it all, but you had to remind yourself that to him, you were a quick lay and the person he could text when he didn’t do the study packets. “Um, _____, do you think we could maybe-”

“I can’t tonight,” you looked back over at him with cold eyes. You couldn’t do that- not anymore, not knowing that he’d been with other girls- in other girls. And you knew it was ridiculous of you to feel this way, to even act this way. Jungkook wasn’t yours, he never said he was yours, and vice versa. Yet, your heart had already given itself away, knocking on the closed door of Jungkook’s chest.

Jungkook blinked. “I wasn’t… I wasn’t going to say-”

You laughed lightly, bitterly, to yourself, knowing very well that people were watching and Taehyung was nearby to sweep you away whenever he pleased. “You don’t have to talk to me,” you shot back bitingly, “you don’t owe me that.”

Jungkook wasn’t sure where this was all coming from, but he knew that it hurt. He knew that he didn’t like when you smiled at him like that- not the smile he kept as his hidden wallpaper, but a smile that was all business, that wasn’t his smile, not the one reserved just for him. It wasn’t the sleepy morning smile you gave him.

Frowning, he glanced backwards to see that Minjoo was watching him now, her head cocked to the side and confusion written all over her face.

“Hey,” Taehyung’s suddenly comforting voice interjected. Your head swiveled around in his direction, eyes silently thanking him for pulling you from that delightful conversation. “Can you cover the register?”

Without so much as a goodbye, or even a glance, you wiped your gloved hands down on your apron and nodded. As you passed by him, you muttered Taehyung a soft “God bless your grandparents” and hurried to punch in your sign-in code.

Jungkook’s mouth felt dry. The mug in his hand, that tiny little flower, no longer felt warm, but cold. He swallowed, trudging back to his seat, and plopped down in defeat, staring longingly at the dissipating flower as if your face might pop up, all smiles and kind, loving words. He wasn’t sure what he meant to you, now. Maybe he was just a fuck to you. Maybe all that you cared about was his dick and now that you’d gotten what you wanted on more than one occasion, you were done.

But your smile used to be so warm.

Now it was so cold.

“Long day?” Somi wandered into your bedroom. You were unashamed, laid out in nothing but a robe scrolling through Twitter posts. You flashed her a grin and flipped over.

“Do we have any bleach in the dorm?” You wondered, staring up at the ceiling. “I’m thinking of adding it to the menu.”

“Bleach frap?” Somi toed over to your bed and fell onto her chest, sighing long and dramatically against the comforter. “I’ll gladly take buy it.”

There was silence as you counted scuff marks of the popcorn ceiling. You could feel the question on Somi’s tongue, though she never asked it. The tension in the room was tight and high strung, so much so that you were tempted to get up and perform an impromptu rendition of PPAP.

“What?” You finally rolled over, glaring at your roommate suspiciously.

Somi blinked. “What?”

“Ask your question,” you huffed, shaking your head in disbelief. Somi glanced away and pursed her lips comically, muttering to herself before she finally sat up.

“I don’t have a question,” Somi announced with a shoulder shrug.

You stared at her, “Seriously?”

Somi casually looked out the window and nodded, “Seriously.”

“Well,” you scooted closer to her, chewing on the inside of your cheek with squinted eyes, “then what do you wanna tell me?”

She shook her head, “Nothing, you weirdo.”

“Somi,” you tilted your chin and folded your arms, as if you were scolding a child.

“____,” Somi returned.

“Somi,” you looked at her through the tops of her eyes, hoping that you looked somewhat threatening.

“I-”

“Just tell me you fuckhead,” you pushed yourself up to your feet, glaring at her. Somi rolled onto her back and sighed, squeezing her eyes shut and rubbing her face dramatically. You watched as she mumbled to herself, debating over something of which you had no idea about, before she finally came to what seemed like a decision. She dug through her back pocket for her phone and curled her lips into a thin, unamused line.

Without warning she was tossing her phone in your direction. You quickly caught it, fumbled for a moment, then turned it over to take a look at whatever had been bothering her.

The picture was of Jungkook- of course, it had to be. You couldn’t have one day where he wasn’t intruding in some way or another, though if you were being honest with yourself you weren’t too torn in seeing his face on your timeline.

The twitter handle was @minjoowinchmajor, a name you weren’t familiar with, but you were with the picture. It was taken at your job, in your cafe, in the same chair you remembered seeing him sitting at. You assumed the person who had taken the picture was the girl he was with, the immaculate blonde one, judging by the angle. Jungkook wasn’t even looking at the camera, he was staring down into his coffee cup, and you had to wonder if he knew she posted this of him.

The caption read “everyone look at how handsome my man is”, paired perfectly with a cute little pink heart emoji. The fond term coiled your stomach into knots, suddenly turning it into a pro-gymnast on crack. On top of your fatigue now was anxiety, bubbling in the very core of your chest, making it feel tight, like you couldn’t breathe.

That was his girlfriend? Jungkook had a girlfriend? Since when? Had he been cheating on her with you? You, of all people he could cheat on her with?

“I know,” Somi sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. “They’re such little snakes-”

“It’s fine.” You locked her phone and handed it to her calmly.

Somi closed her eyes tight and shook her head, “____, it’s not. He’s an asshole, okay? He doesn’t deserve you.”

While your insides sparked with an intensity you hadn’t felt in years, with such an anger that your head spun, you moved slowly towards your phone. Somi watched in confusion as you typed out a message, fingers moving carefully and precisely. “What’re you doing?”

Your thumb hovered over the ‘send’ button. It was such a petty, simple move to send the message. You knew everything you could’ve wanted, could’ve had, would be gone with a simple press of a button. You knew you’d ruin it, whatever you had with Jungkook. But an image formed in your mind- an image that spoke volumes, an image of him and a beautiful blonde girl curled up in bed together, watching movies and listening to music and doing everything you’d ever wanted with him.

Jungkook made his choice.

And now you were making yours.

A mile away, locked inside the boy’s dorm with a brown-haired boy seated on the couch in the living room, Jungkook returned with a bucket of popcorn and a pretend smile. He plopped down besides his roommate, Park Jimin, and was about to press play on the Vine compilation meant to lift his spirits when his phone buzzed in his pocket.

Jungkook’s heart skipped when he saw the name- one of the only names in his phone, since he never took the time of day to put other people’s names in.

Jimin watched as Jungkook’s raised, spritely eyebrows fell, how his eager smile faltered and twitched into a straight, blank line. He couldn’t tell what expression Jungkook was wearing, but the boy’s eyes were… were they shining? In the dark, they looked like they were sparkling, and after a beat of confusion he realized they were watering.

Jimin looked up, concerned. “Dude,” he began, rising to his feet as Jungkook pushed the bowl off his lap and onto the floor. The popcorn spilled like a splatter across the rug. His first instinct was to scold his younger friend, but the curse died on his tongue when the twenty year-old rushed out the front door.

Eyebrows furrowed, Jimin reached down to grab the phone out of the mess he’d made.
