ABC launches investigation into its own journalism amid bombshell Spotlight report
The national broadcaster has removed a video after a 7NEWS Spotlight investigation into the misreporting of veteran Heston Russell.
This wasn't just sloppy reporting by the ABC -- It was deliberate journalistic corruption by a failed public broadcaster with no standards or ethics that costs tax payers 1.4 billion dollars a year.
Sell the ABC NOW

Barnaby Gives a Sh*t Now
Barnaby Gives A Shit Now
Deputy Dawg Barnaby Joyce said he “couldn’t really give a shit” about Covid. Now gives one. For the Barnaby the coal price is more important than health. He’s tested positive and, given he is an overweight sedentary 54-year-old, there are real concerns about his chances. Barnaby has repeatedly dismissed the COVID threat, saying that as long as coal prices are high, he doesn’t care “It’s like…

Blatantly Partisan Party Review XI (federal 2022): Drew Pavlou Democratic Alliance
Running where: QLD and SA in the Senate; Divisions of Bennelong (NSW) and Sturt (SA) in the House of Representatives
Prior reviews: None, this is a new party
Drew Pavlou came to prominence as an undergraduate at the University of Queensland, where he was an elected student representative. This was for two reasons. First, he has attained a high profile as an activist against the Chinese Communist Party (CCP); second, the university suspended him for two years (later reduced to one semester) for bullying and harassment, partly on account of his tangles with CCP supporters. Now, he has decided to try to make the leap from the small pond of student politics to the much larger waterbody of federal politics, and although many have successfully moved from stupol to ozpole, I suspect he will find he doesn’t have half the name recognition he hopes he does.
Besides the predictable “counter the influence of China” policies, Pavlou has three other main policy platforms. One is to tackle poverty and homelessness, largely through reversing privatisation, raising welfare payments, and better healthcare funding (e.g. dental in Medicare). Another is to make Australia a “renewables superpower” by pursuing major nation-building projects in the energy sector—which ties back to the party’s hostility to the CCP, as it believes this investment will “insulat[e] us from Chinese pressure”.
The third is to “strengthen Aussie democracy” and create a federal ICAC. It’s really just a bullet-point list preceded by one of the funniest paragraphs I’ve read so far on a party website. In reciting examples of Australians’ “healthy larrikin suspicion of authoritarian state power” from Banjo Paterson to The Castle, it has such a vibe of Dennis Denuto’s famous speech from the aforementioned film that I began reading it in the tone of “it’s the constitution, it’s Mabo, it’s justice, it’s the vibe… that’s it, it’s the vibe”.
The bullet-point policies are in some cases excessively broad and unrealistic. “Ban The Politician To Corporate Lobbyist Merry-Go-Round”? What actual relationships or activities does this mean? How will they be banned? How will this accord with libertarian bullet points like “Protect Free Speech in the Constitution” or “Safeguard Australian Freedoms”? Either people are free to become corporate lobbyists after being an MP or there are limits on their freedom of association and speech—pick one! Some of the policies are already out of date, too: the bullet points against China include a boycott of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, and it’s very hard to boycott an event that has already happened.
My conclusion is that this is a student politician using stupol rhetoric at the federal level. Some of the aspirations are to varying extents in accordance with general left-wing issues, some of it will dog-whistle to Sinophobes, and in general I think he’s out of his depth. This isn’t the worst party out there by any means but the shortcomings are substantial.
My recommendation: Give Drew Pavlou Democratic Alliance a weak to middling preference.

Which Labor Dual-Citizen Matches Your Star Sign? Buzzfeed Takes On Politics With OzPol Live
Tumblr media
Buzzfeed Australia’s Interactive Twitter Show, OzPol Live
Buzzfeed Australia is attempting to engage young voters in the national political debate with their interactive Twitter show ‘OzPol Live’, broadcast from Parliament House.
The show’s youth-based approach isn’t unique to Buzzfeed content, but the hard-politics angle may be a hard pill to swallow for its Millennial audience.

Young people demanding action on climate change in a Melbourne march organised by the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AAP)
Katie Atcheson, Chairperson for the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC), said young people are often deterred from engaging with politics when government policy consistently misses an understanding of the “reality of what life is like” for them.
“There’s been about a million jobs created in the last five years in Australia, yet somehow youth unemployment is going up,” she says.
AYAC sees young people instead turn to their digital networks and local communities when trying to enact change in the area they’re passionate about.
“We’ve seen the rise of issue-based political engagement and community action,” said Ms Atcheson.
“Young people are the largest group of volunteers in Australia.”
PODCAST: The University of Sydney’s Professor Ariadne Vromen explains how young Australians approach politics differently to other generations
Flunking Out?
But limited engagement with formal politics and confusion around political systems can prevent young Australians’ from harnessing the power of their voices during elections.
In January, Monash University published a study of the motivation behind young Australians’ voting choices at the 2016 Federal election.
A considerable portion of participants in the study were passionate about issues like climate change and marriage equality, but were guided by parents or ‘gut feeling’ in their voting choices.
“When my parents first migrated to Australia, they were allowed to come under the Labor migration laws … So ever since then … it’s been Labor,” said one voter.
“I know that’s such a shallow thing to do, but I just don’t like Tony Abbott,” said another.
Monash researcher Dr Zareh Ghazarian said young people fail to “make the most of their rights and responsibilities” as voters engaged with the issues of the day when they aren’t proficient in their understanding of democratic process.

Year 10 students proficient in the Civics and Citizenship module on the National Assessment Program (The Conversation)
He said Year 11 and 12 students should be offered refresher classes that consolidate their knowledge of civics and citizenship before they vote for for the first time.
“It’s essentially treating [voting] like a life skill, like safe driving and safe drinking, which schools are already doing.”
Always On
Social media and online platforms are perceived as giving young people access to more information than any other generation, but Dr Zareh says they may overwhelm users in practice.
“There’s a lot of white noise in the media and on social media that essentially adds nothing to peoples’ understanding of the issues, the debates, or indeed, institutional responses that government can or cannot make,” he said.
“There’s a lot of stuff that’s opinion dressed up as analysis, and that I think, is concerning.”
Jonathan Harley, Twitter’s APAC director of news partnerships, said collaborating with Buzzfeed for OzPol Live was exciting for the social media network.
“For years now, #auspol has been the most mentioned hashtag on Twitter in Australia, so we know that nothing gets Aussies talking like politics.”
But 7 News Brisbane Political Correspondent Patrick Condren, said the #auspol Twitter conversation is “not worth a pinch of poo”.
“It’s basically inhabited by journalists, for journalists, and for trolls,” he said. “I don’t see it as having a significant impact on the political landscape.”
Speaking Up
Mr Condren said robust analysis of youth issues in political media is often excluded from mainstream media, but that commercial news outlets can’t afford to write outside their primary readership’s demographic.
“It can be a case of what came first, the chicken or the egg?” he said.
“Older Australians are interested in politics, so to appeal to the audience that is interested, politics needs to be written in a certain way, therefore appealing to those Australians.”
Mr Condren said more young journalists should be covering political beats so their voice is included in the discourse, and their peers are represented.
“If politics was more easily digestible, younger people would naturally gravitate to trying to understand it,” he said.
Katie Atcheson said Alice Workman, who hosts 'OzPol Live’ and is one of the youngest members of Canberra’s press gallery, might be that voice.
“She gets on board with issues that are affecting young people that nobody else is covering, and she owns it,” she said.
On the premiere episode of ‘OzPol Live’, a Federal Budget special, Ms Workman interviewed Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison about Centrelink’s Newstart Allowance, the cost of university, and the ABC funding freeze.

“You’re sure you don’t want to cut any shows, not even ‘Tonightly’, with Tom Ballard?” she said.
“As long as they don’t touch ‘Mad as Hell’, I’m happy,” said the Treasurer.

A little backg: An old, UNUSED, run-down, falling apart aged care complex in the suburb of Eltham, Victoria, Australia, was bought by charity St. Vincent De Paul to be renovated into semi-assisted living for refugees to aid in re-settling them. Most of the residents will be young families and most are fleeing Syria.
Of course, being the racists that we Aussies are, many residents are protesting against this action, claiming that ‘Aussie’ aged citizens are being stripped of their homes and rights in favour of foreigners. Once again, no-one has lived in or used the complex in years, so this literally is a lie to cover their racism.  Please sign this petition to let St. Vinnie’s continue to do their work for these people that deserve to live safely just as much as any other human being.

Solving the Australia Day dilemma Australia Day is the official national day of Australia. Observed annually on 26 January, it marks the 1788 landing of the First Fleet at Sydney Cove and raising of the Union Flag by Arthur Phillip following days of exploration of Port Jackson in New South Wales. . It will always be invasion day for Australia’s first nations people -- a day of hurt and pain. The solution is to move Australia day to January 1st. That date marks the day in 1901 when Australia became a Federation -- a single unified nation -- for the first time. Before January first 1901, Australia was a series of British colonies. And for some 60 thousand years before that, it was a collection of hundreds (between 350 and 500) separate Indigenous Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander nations, each with their own cultures and languages. So, January first marks the origin of a single Australian nation. Stuart Gary (P.S. You can always move the New Year’s Day public holiday to December 31st and call it the New Year’s Eve public holiday instead.)

'Pain with Purpose' #budget2014 #threewordbudget like painful day in 2008 when @myspacetom deleted all my notes and blogs and photos I had been posting on @myspace while in China. Or does the #ozpol mean pain like that time you get fired and banned from China and people steal all your ideas and the Chinese government copy all your emails phone calls and photos and videos on your computer?
