ALSO, FUNNY SIDESTORY: when i finally told myself I would draw him, as i sat down to look up references pleasant classical music started playing loudly from downstairs, the sun was in the middle of setting and just reaching golden hour, and ON TOP OF THAT A WHOLE ASS RAINBOW APPEARED ALL WITHIN THE SPAN OF SECONDS AFTER I STARTED, ALL OUTSIDE MY WINDOW. The universe deadass saw me about to draw Edgar and went "awesome, here take this:" and gave me the most beautiful moment to work in. Access Denied: The Inaccessible Island Rail

The Inaccessible Island rail (Laterallus rogersi) is a rarely seen member of the rail family, Rallidae. Part of the reason for its obscurity is the place in which it resides: Inaccessible Island, part of the Tristan da Cunha archipelago in the southern Atlantic Ocean. These islands are extremely remote, and until 2019 it was unclear how L. rogersi even came to be there. We now know that the species colonized the island some 1.5 million years ago, originally coming in from South America and subsequently losing its ability to fly.

In addition to its unique evolutionary history, the Inaccessible Island rail's greatest claim is that it is the smallest flightless bird in the world. Individuals weigh between 35 to 49 g (1.2–1.7 oz) and can be 13 to 15.5 cm (5.1–6.1 in) long from beak to tail. Members of both sexes are dark brown with red eyes; some may have white striping along the underbelly or wings. Females tend to be slightly smaller and lighter in color than males.

The Inaccesible Island rail can be found on all habitats on the island in which it inhabits; these include low mountains and fern brush though the species is most abundant in the grasslands that grow close to the rocky shore. Within these habitats, L. rogersi is largely diurnal. They freely forage for invertebrates, including earthworms, beetles, and moths, as well as seeds and berries; as they have no natural predators they have few defenses against potential threats, although they can run extremely fast when alarmed.

Adults are highly territorial, and when two rivals of either sex encounter each other they will display by lowering their heads, circling each other, and calling loudly until one of them concedes. Males and females mate for life, and build nests in the tall grass. The breeding season is between October and January, in late summer, and females lay a clutch of 2 eggs. Both parents take turns incubating the eggs until they hatch. Chicks can be vulnerable to predation by the migratory brown skua, so parents guard the nest fiercely. The time it takes for chicks to fully mature is unknown, as is the average lifespan in the wild.

Conservation status: The Inaccessible Island rail is considered Vulnerable by the IUCN. The island's population is believed to stand at about 5,600 adult birds. While the island's ecology is currently stable, researchers believe the species would be seriously imperaled if invasive species such as house mice, feral cats and brown rats were introduced. Access to the island is currently restricted, and the island has been declared a nature reserve by the Tristan da Cunha Island Council.

easy non-alcoholic mixed drinks

not something that we usually post, but thought it might be nice for the times when you want something slightly fancier than a pre-packaged drink, but don’t want to put in too much effort or drink alcohol. the instructions for all of the following “recipes” are to simply mix the ingredients together in a tall glass.

passion fruit + grapefruit twist:

12 oz. grapefruit sparkling water

1/3 cup passion fruit juice cocktail

pomegranate berry “sangria”:

12 oz. cranberry, mixed-berry, or cherry sparkling water

1/3 cup pomegranate juice

optional: 2 tbs. cranberry juice

optional: 1 tbs. grenadine syrup

optional, but recommended if using unsweetened juice(s): sugar to taste

cranberry lime:

12 oz. lime sparkling water

1/3 cup cranberry juice

optional, but recommended if using unsweetened juice(s): sugar to taste

optional: half a small lime’s worth of fresh juice

optional: a slice of fresh lime as garnish for the rim

summer sunrise:

Had this idea last week. I hope to write it soon as it's little idea, but it's me and it's uni time so. Anyway fic that for now is called Tommy doesn't want kids(or does he?):

“You know pout and look at your coffee cup won't help make your coffee taste better,” Josh smirks at him when he enters the restroom but then changes his expression to a more serious one. “Relationship problems?”

Buck just shrugs. It's not a problem, they are not fighting, but his heart and brain work too much.

“Wanna share? I'm a great listener. Helping people with their problems is my job.”

“Tommy and I had a talk about the future. He mentioned his deal breaker and…,” Buck sighs tugging his curls. “If it be anyone else I know I would say his deal breaker is opposite to mine and we're not going to last, but…”

“But you didn't,” Josh ends for him and Buck just nods.

“Why?”

"Because… because I want to be with him and now I'm not sure what I want more: Tommy or having kids. I don't want to lose Tommy. But I'm so sad because I want kids, especially after I was a donor and I-I don't know how to choose. I love Tommy so much, but I'm not sure if I love him more than giving up this dream."

"You need to think about it a lot, Buck. Make sure you won't change your mind in 2 years”

“I know. That's why I came to see Maddie.”

“Can I say one thing?”

“Yeah.”

“Imagine yourself in ten years. In two situations. One you have kids but no Tommy,” Buck's heart cries in pain and he can't even really picture this. Only two little kids with blue eyes but they have Tommy's electric blue, not his baby blue iris. “Now imagine yourself in ten years married to Tommy,” and Buck does.

He pictures dinners with wine, laughs and dances to their playlist of songs that they love. He pictures the backyard full of flowers, berries and trees that they put there. He pictures the dog they would get. Maybe even two. He pictures smiles when they wake up together with Tommy kissing him till he can't breathe but ready to give up air. He pictures himself happy, even though he doesn't have everything he dreamt about, he has Tommy and…

Oh. I guess it is. My secret to happiness.

“I think your face told me anything I need to know about your choice.”

“Yeah, I'm sure it did,” Buck smiles. “I'm still a little sad. I had a whole list of names that go good with Kinard and Buckley-Kinard.”

Josh chuckles. “Oh, I'm sure you did. And I think it would hurt. Some days more than others, but if Tommy is more important for you, you can do it.”

“Yeah. Not every dream comes true. But I don't want to let Tommy go away.”

Josh smiles at him, “Can I give you another piece of advice?”

“Please, you're really good,” Buck smiles at his friend.

“Tell Tommy about how it was a deal breaker for you. He needs to know. Don't hide it from him.”

Buck nods.

*(Makes 3 pieces)*

Ingredients:

- 3 pieces of 40-calorie white bread

- 4 tablespoons of egg whites (60 calories)

- 0-calorie sweetener (to taste)

- 1 teaspoon cinnamon (6 calories)

- 3-4 tablespoons unsweetened almond milk (15-20 calories) or 3-4 tablespoons oat milk (10-20 calories)

- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (3 calories)

- 0-calorie cooking spray

Instructions:

1. In a bowl, whisk together the egg whites, almond milk/oat milk, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well combined.

2. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat and lightly coat it with cooking spray.

3. Dip each slice of bread into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated but not soaked.

4. Place the coated bread in the skillet and cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown.

5. Serve with your choice of toppings. A personal favorite is to mix the 0-calorie sweetener with some cinnamon and serve with berries.

- 1 cup bell peppers, sliced (about 25 calories)

- 1 cup broccoli florets (about 31 calories)

- 1 cup snap peas (about 26 calories)

- 1 medium carrot, sliced (about 25 calories)

- 6-8 large shrimp, peeled and deveined (about 60 calories)

- 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce (about 20 calories)

- 1 teaspoon minced garlic

- 1 teaspoon minced ginger

- Cooking spray or a small amount of olive oil for stir-frying (optional)

- Salt and pepper to taste

- Optional: sesame seeds or green onions for garnish

Instructions:

1. Rinse the shirataki noodles under cold water and drain them well. Pat them dry with a paper towel.

I HC that, when he has fuck all else to do, he goes around Gotham's karaoke bars. That's if the coin comes up good, of course.

Sometimes he even graces the Iceberg Lounge when Oz is hosting a retro night, or something of the like. He enjoys 60s hits in particular. Think Elvis Presley, Dion, Sam Cooke, Frank Sinatra, Chuck Berry, Lesley Gore etc. They match his oldy-goldy vibe (one must keep up appearances), and since his voice is suave, articulate and deep, he can perform them with ease.

His henchmen and thugs always accompany him. They cheer him on in all their drunken stupor, especially when he gives that gyrating hip action. "Tha's OUR boss!" - Oz's men watch too, jaws slacked and eyes wide. Didn't Oz say this guy had no sense of humour?

Somewhere, amidst the crowd, Matches Malone sits, stone-faced and thankful that the Lounge's dim lights conceal his blushing.

Perhaps, on another night, Jason sits instead; his face twisted in second-hand embarrassment as his 6'5", supposedly-terrifying uncle figure rotates his hips in rhythm to Elvis Presley's Bossa Nova, Baby (it must be the Viva Elvis version, no exceptions). No one cares about the hints of blood spattered on his suit, thankfully. They were supposed to finish the job and celebrate with a quiet drink. How did this happen?

Vegan Blueberry & Lemon Muffins!

I used a great recipe on the BBC Foods website!

INGREDIENTS

200ml/7fl oz oat milk

1 tsp apple cider vinegar

300g/10½oz plain flour

½ tsp salt

150g/5½oz caster sugar

1¼ tsp bicarbonate of soda

2 tsp baking powder

3 tbsp poppy seeds

2 lemons, juice and zest

2½ tbsp olive oil, plus extra for greasing

175g/6oz frozen blueberries

For the lemon drizzle icing

120g/4¼oz icing sugar

2 tbsp oat milk

4 tbsp fresh lemon juice

lemon zest, to garnish

METHOD

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/180C Fan/Gas 6 and grease a 10–12-hole muffin tin.

2. Mix the oat milk and vinegar together and leave for about 5 minutes to create a buttermilk-like consistency.

3. Sift all the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. Pour the remaining wet ingredients into the milk and vinegar and whisk together. Fold the wet ingredients into the dry, making sure no pockets of flour have been left.

4. Add half the frozen blueberries, if using, to the mixed batter and turn gently (you just want to fold them in to prevent the colours mixing). Divide the mixture evenly between the muffin tin holes and top each one with a few of the remaining frozen berries and push into the surface. Bake for 25–30 minutes until a skewer inserted into the centres comes out clean. Remove from the tin and allow to cool completely if you want to add the icing.

5. To make the icing, mix the icing sugar with the oat milk and lemon juice in a bowl until runny enough to drizzle over the top of each muffin (simply add 1 teaspoon more of icing sugar at a time if it’s too runny). Sprinkle fresh lemon zest over the top of each muffin to decorate.
