As it's halloween, I want to talk about the first thing I ever published!

I've been designing tabletop stuff for years, primarily for D&D 5e, though not exclusively. I just never published any of it. It wasn't good enough, you know? I suspect a lot of aspiring designers can get behind that sentiment.

Anyway, at this point I was playing in a semi-regular game of, you guessed it, D&D 5e. However, our halloween session had a problem - we wouldn't have everyone, so we couldn't play the campaign. Talk of a oneshot sprang up. Dread was suggested - it was easy, designed for oneshot play, and required minimal prep.

I'd seen Dread played on Oxventure a few times and loved the idea, so I volunteered to run it. I wrote that oneshot on the most scrappy piece of lined paper you ever did see. I might still have it somewhere - if I find it I'll reblog this with a picture. I did not expect it to be good. I did not expect the amount of tension as the tower grew taller and taller. I definitely did not expect the amount of praise I got for my scrappy oneshot. It got me thinking.

The sketch in question

Over the next few days I drew up a sketch of the areas the group had explored and sent it to the group. Over the next few months, scrappy piece of lined paper in front of me, I began to type it up, format it. I was in no hurry, this was just for fun.

That was 2022. I published The Depths in April 2023. Since then I've published 17 more games and supplements. If you're looking for a sign to take the leap and publish something, consider this your sign. It's great fun, and the barrier to entry is much, much lower than you think.

Okay, Corazon de Ballena headcannon time.

We all know that Corazon has a...fraught relationship with his father, but what about his mother? I wouldn't be surprised if it was just as bad or in a similar vein, but I can't but think it would be more interesting if she was a supportive mom who collects all his penny dreadfuls and pamphlets. She just has a nice little shelf where she displays them.

She even collects Beeples merch when she realizes that's another thing he does.

I just think it would be funny if the first time the Oxventurers meet Corazon's mom they're all expecting something akin to when he has to interact with his father and it's just "oh! Look at my boy! He's so accomplished and handsome!" (or something along those lines) and Coeazon is just one part embarrassed, one part happy to see his mom again.

Thinking about what all the Oxventurer's rooms would look like on the Joyful Damnation.

Corazon: The Captain's quarters is definetly massive. There is a large king size bed with the highest end pillow and blanket in the middle. To the side there's a sturdy oak desk (nailed into the floor like most of the furniture on the ship). He's got a shelf above that which holds all his penny dreadful sagas and other adventure books he likes. On the other side of the room there's a few chests and shelves filled with the more expensive treasures that he likes keeping around.

Dob: His room is pretty simple, this guy is very unmaterialistic. Most importantly he has a little hammock hanging from the ceiling. Theres a spare lute and a few other instruments he's picked up scattered on the floor. There's a bucket of songs he's written out and worked on. Finaly he has a little painting of him and Suzette he had commissioned that he has hung up next to his bed.

Egbert: His room is pretty similar to what the paladin quarters where like at Mistmire. There's a simple bed, blanket, and pillow. Next to it, a small desk with all his pamphlets spread about it. Then on the wall there's a few maces mounted. Unlike Mistmire though, there's a cushion by the foot of the bed for a certain seal to sleep.

Merilwen: Since she doesn't have to sleep she has a little mat spread out on the ground to enter her trances on when she wants alone time. If she really wants to lie down though there's a small cat tower set up in front of a window to lounge in and soak up the sun so she just wildshapes for that. Theres a rack of herbs and seeds in the corner for her to practice magic and snack on. She also had a large (probably stolen) landscape of a forest painting installed to help with the homesickness.

Prudence: Theres for sure a thematically appropriate coffin in her room for her to sleep in. The windows of her room are covered by curtains. A mural of Cthulu is painted on the wall to help instill a sense of fear and dread to visitors. There's also a good size desk and shelves crammed in to fit as many spellbooks, arcane artifacts, and stored up human blood she'd need.

Finaly the Crew's quarters. Corazon actualy does run a tight ship so whenever the Oxventurer's aren't out adventuring on land the crew knows to keep everything ship shape. All of them have a hammock and modest chest for personal items in the large crew's quartes. There's also a table set up for card games to help pass the time and a few books Corazon read and didn't like.

hi, this year I am spoiled for choice! What a great year for small fandoms!

Generally I like emotional conflict, drama and happy endings. I love first kisses and angst and smut, but ultimately I want my blorbos to go on a journey, to have some conflict, and resolve it.

DNW: kink for kinks sake, by this I mean negotiated bdsm, safewords, dungeons, formalised kinky culture stuff. No rape/dubcon.

Hitman: Diana/47 are my OTP and I love them SO much. You can do what you will with them, but I'd love it if you did something weird.

The Newsreader: I have only seen season 1 so far at the time of writing. I ship Helen and Dale AND Dale and Tim. I am not interested in a polyamorous solution, I like angst and conflict and mess, I've no real preference which pairing 'wins', or if Dale loses them both. Helen is my favourite so be nice to her <3

Star Trek: Lower Decks: Mariner/Boimler are my pairing of choice, I love their dynamic. If you were to do anything with what happened during the SNW crossover I would be over the moon, what if they didn't get home? What if Tendi and Rutherford had come through? What if they'd stayed around for Pike's birthday party? But honestly, I love them and their shenanigans, so whatever makes you inspired!

Raffles: Raffles and Bunny are my OTP of OTPs, there will never be any one else I love as much as them. Whatever you write, I will be happy. (but if you can put some cricket in there, I'll love you forever!)

DADHAT: Edgin/Xenk for preference, happy with gen if its funny. I'm not a D&D reference-getter generally, as I haven't played much, but I loved this movie and would love to see more fic for it.

The episode “Ballot Time” was so good. Egbert’s beautifully crafted story arch was *chef’s kiss* perfection! Bravo to Mike and Johnny for that! (Also, shoutout to editing for the inclusion of Egbert’s theme during a very important moment.)

I am late to the party but I’m finally watching Parley Hard. It surprises me that no one mentioned Prudence’s expression when Dob said “I don’t know what you did, but I know who you are”. She looks really suspicious at that, which kind of implies she doesn’t think they really know Egbert that well. I don’t think that is a stretch for Prudence to think that either. Most of the Guild members have kept secrets from each other to varying degrees of importance. Dob regarding Liliana’s hair/how deep his feelings are (although that was eventually revealed), Prudence has never said how she became a warlock other than she just didn’t want to serve the same patron as her adopted father figure, and we don’t know what really happened to Corazon’s crew at the Island with the Cursed Hole. Egbert isn’t the only one keeping secrets but he has been the most private about his past - others have broached their topics but mostly spoke in half-truths. Egbert has never said anything more than he’s been disgraced and requires a penance. Anyways all of this is very delicious and I do enjoy Mike’s roleplaying as always.

My #1 post of 2022

Not to be a fandom discourse blog, but I can’t help but be frustrated by recent comments regarding the Oxventure brand. On the Oxventure’s DREAD one-shot video, there is a pointed essay responding to an official channel’s reply on another comment that has some choice words for the group. It’s a very emotionally driven essay for an unemotional topic. Calling them out for not playing a one shot of a “mainstream” ttrpg on a channel dedicated to a mainstream ttrpg and getting bizarrely upset about the “lack of substance” in their actual plays. A similar train of thought can be found on a recent Reddit post, but like I can’t help but feel like it’s trivial complaining. If you want something serious, watch another actual play or go play dnd yourself, the point of actual plays is to be entertaining, and for the Oxventure crew this means comedy over form. I can’t imagine watching a five year actual play series and not figuring that out. There’s a simple solution; don’t like? Don’t watch.

I like many things! I am a particular fan of kink, but I also dig a good friendship fic. Generally speaking, I prefer lighter or more romantic stories to darker/angstier ones, though horror elements are welcome in most of these sources.

In terms of general prompts, I love a good weird AU, the more weirdly specific the better. I love take your fandom to work in particular. I also live for Want of a Nail stories, where one thing changes and then everything changes.

The main things I don't want, just in general, are needles, infidelity, soulmates/bonds/marks, and character bashing. Body horror is okay, but nothing past what would be in a rated R movie, basically. If you want a reference, I didn't have any problems with the body horror in Uh Oh, apart from the one with the coffee. The one with the coffee was too much.

Oxventure: Blades in the Dark Requested: Kasimir, Zillah, and Edvard or Kellie-centric

I love Kellie so much?? I want to know everything. After the end of The Final Season we probably know what happened to her? But go nuts with speculation. Or when she's younger and with Eleanor! Give me lesbian drama, I beg.

The OT3 is the OT3 and I love them so much. Friendship fic is fine if you swing that way, but shippy fic is also A++. I particularly like stories about what they did after the Barricade. Please no love triangles, unless they resolve into a threesome.

Oxventure: D&D Requested: Prudence, Corazon, Egbert, Shattershield

Prudence/Corazon is my favorite. Would just adore seeing something with Corazon de Tortuga and his new, more turtley life. Egbert/Shattershield is not my thing, but I'm fascinated by their relationship and how it changes over time.

Don't want: any mention of Liliana or Katie

Oxventure: Dread Requested: Any

These idiots. <3 Prequel, everybody lives AU, whatever, it's good. I'm not hugely interested in stories set after the canonical ending? Unless there's necromancy or alternate timelines or whatever, or if one or more of them Came Back Wrong. Then I'm VERY interested in it.

Oxventure: Deadlands Requested: Victoria, Bison Billie, Nate, Garnet

I'm fascinated by what must have happened Victoria beforehand. Was she even the first avatar of Conquest? Did she really have a human family (or a family of fallen angels???), or was that a dodge? For Bison Billie, I love Billie/Edie, but Billie/Silas goes down smooth, and Billie & Delacy friendship fic would be excellent. I have a lot of love in my heart for Nate? I have this headcanon that he fought in the Civil War and then settled down with Junie. Also just give me anything with Garnet. I want her to steal hearts and play cards, but mostly play cards.

Oxventure: Wyrdwood Requested: Morven, Robin, Lug, Happen

Do Robin and Morven date the same person? Do they not date the same person? Do they date each other? What happens when Morven gets her body back? What happens when Morven gets Robin's body permanently and Robin is thrust into another body? Are Lug and Happen boning down, and at what frequency? Or hell, hit me with a casefic if you're feeling frisky.
