Don’t tell my husband, but I think I have a girl crush.

I recently had the privilege of tasting thru a series of small batch rums. As you would expect, most of these came from the Caribbean. Yes, they were delicious, but amongst these was an oddball bottle that surprisingly was from New York City. It was a clear white rum and it was exquisite.

Well to my honor, last Thursday in thru the doors of the shop walks the owner and distiller of this particular rum and it was a woman. Please understand that in the liquor business there are very few female distillers, so upon shaking her hand, I was already impressed with the fact that this lovely blonde woman was solely responsible for creating her own spirits company.

I already had loved her rum based on its’ taste, but having had the opportunity to spend some time with the creator and hear her story first hand, I am officially in the Bridget Firtle fan club.

One of the first questions I had to ask her was how and why did she decide to distill rum of all things, especially in New York City. I am sure, as a woman, she has to explain this over and over again, and yes her back story made me love her all the more.

Both sides of Bridget’s family are Brooklyn born and raised. After receiving her MBA, she went on to work for a hedge fund, where she was tasked with covering the global alcoholic beverage market. She became intrigued with who the people are behind the craft spirits ,and having always wanted to run her own business, she explained she just “needed something more tangible” in her professional life. So she walked away from her glamorous job three years ago and founded the corporation which she aptly named The Noble Experiment (a nick-name for the failed legislation of Prohibition,) in an old Brooklyn warehouse and began distilling Owney’s Rum.

Bridget explains that the first spirit Americans drank was Rum distilled domestically from molasses (the by-product of sugar production) shipped from the British colonies in the tropics. These early Americans used rum for imbibing as well as currency.  The first distillery on record in this country (c 1664), was located on present day Staten Island – it produced rum.  Unfortunately, the domestic rum industry dried up when the British imposed the Molasses Tax.  Farmers then began moving west, growing grains and distilling whiskey.  

Prior to Prohibition, New York City was home to thousands of thriving distilleries which was then taken up by several bootleggers including the infamous Owen “Owney” Madden. Owney, was the gangster boss of the notorious West Side’s Gopher Gang.  He operated several Harlem speakeasy’s and smuggled in Caribbean-made rum. Thanks to him, rum started regaining popularity amongst Americans for the first time since the Colonial Era. Bridget’s rum pays homage to Owney as a figure in an important era in NYC’s rich history of imbibing.

Bridget is lovely person who personifies the determination it takes to pursue your passion in life. She laughs, as she says “her family jokes that if they don’t hear from her for a day or two, that she is trapped under a 700 lb drum of molasses in the warehouse.” She first began selling her product out of the trunk of her car and is proud to now have three full time employees, and yes they are all women too.
